Michelsen stuns De Minaur, Tsitsipas starts title defence in Los Cabos

#NextGenATP American Alex Michelsen earned the biggest win of his career in style Wednesday in Los Cabos.

The 19-year-old surged past third seed Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-1 for the first Top 10 victory of his career. Michelsen stunned the No. 9 player in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings in one hour and 23 minutes to reach the quarter-finals of the ATP 500 and climb to first place in the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Jeddah.

"I think I played about as well as I could," Michelsen said. "That's something to remember for sure."


De Minaur arrived in Mexico in top form after reaching the Rotterdam final behind wins against Top 15 players Andrey Rublev and Grigor Dimitrov. But his momentum came to a halt against the rising American.

Michelsen converted four of his six break points and won 51 per cent of his return points according to Infosys ATP Stats to trouble the Australian. He will next face eighth seed Jordan Thompson or American qualifier Emilio Nava.

The 2023 Next Gen ATP Finals qualifier Michelsen is in great position to make a return to Jeddah this year, sitting in first place ahead of Shang Juncheng. Michelsen had lost his only previous Lexus ATP Head2Head clash against a Top 10 opponent earlier this year in the third round of the Australian Open when he fell to Alexander Zverev, who will also be in action Wednesday evening in Los Cabos.

In a dominant debut at the ATP Masters 1000 level, #NextGenATP American Alex Michelsen quickly proved he belonged on Thursday at the BNP Paribas Open.

With a 6-2, 6-3 win against Jaume Munar, the 19-year-old became the youngest player from the United States to win a Masters 1000 match since Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe both won at the same age in Miami in 2017.


The World No. 80 owned the highest PIF ATP Ranking of the seven Americans on the Day 2 schedule, and he has now moved eight places higher to No. 72 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings — a mark that would represent a career high.

The win also improved him to 6-1 in opening-round, tour-level matches on home soil, including wins against Tennys Sandgren in Delray Beach and Thanasi Kokkinakis in Dallas this season. His record now stands at 7-6 on the year, with a Los Cabos quarter-final run his best result.

Michelsen saved the only two break points he faced against Spain's Munar, who was seeking his 10th ATP Masters 1000 victory. The American hit four aces and converted on three of his six break chances, according to Infosys ATP Stats. He will next meet countryman and 17th seed Tommy Paul in the second roud.

Fils, 19, produced some of his best tennis to reach the third round in Indian Wells, while 19-year-old American Michelsen won his maiden Masters 1000 match in California. Both will aim to carry that form into Miami, where they make their debuts. Van Assche, 19, arrives in Miami off the back of a run to the semi-finals at the ATP Challenger Tour 175 event in Phoenix.
