#NextGen ATP Frenchman Arthur Fils also advanced with a 7-6(5), 6-2 win against Nuno Borges. Fils improved to 2-0 in his Lexus ATP Head2Head against the Portuguese by backing up a straight-sets win in Auckland earlier this season.

The 19-year-old progressed to the semi-finals at the Auckland ATP 250 for his best result of the young season. He will next meet 23rd seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in his bid to extend is Indian Wells run.

#NextGenATP teen Arthur Fils downed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 6-4 after winning 24 of his 27 first-serve points and not facing a break point during the one-hour, 17-minute encounter.

Fils was also aggressive on return, winning 59 per cent of his second-serve return points. The one-time tour-level titlist is up to No. 37 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, just three shy of tying his career high.

Frenchman Fils, 19, won his first tour-level trophy on clay last season in Lyon. Brazilian Fonseca, 17, starred on clay in Rio de Janeiro in February, reaching the quarter-finals.

Fils wins Estoril opener, ends Sousa’s singles career

Arthur Fils held firm in an emotional atmosphere Wednesday at the Millennium Estoril Open. The #NextGenATP Frenchman triumphed 7-5, 6-4 against Joao Sousa to bring the home favourite’s pro singles career to a close at the ATP 250.

The 19-year-old Fils converted three of six break points he earned, according to Infosys ATP Stats, for his 10th tour-level win of the season. He wrapped his victory in one hour and 50 minutes to send the 35-year-old Sousa into singles retirement — the Portuguese will also compete in the doubles at his final tour-level event, alongside Joao Fonseca.


“First of all I want to congratulate Joao for his amazing career, it’s unbelievable,” said Fils of Sousa in his on-court interview. “Thanks to the crowd, obviously today they weren’t cheering for me, but that’s normal… He played amazing for his last match. Of course it is tough, he is a tough opponent on clay, so I’m really happy with the win.

“I was trying to stay focused on the match and nothing else. The crowd and everything, just stay focused. Today I’m really happy, and let’s see about tomorrow.”

The No. 37 in the PIF ATP Rankings, Fils will now prepare for a maiden Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting with Cristian Garin. The Chilean wrapped up a rain-interrupted 7-6(3), 7-5 victory against Jurij Rodionov in a match that began on Monday evening in Portugal.

Another two #NextGenATP talent, Brazil’s Fonseca and home favourite Henrique Rocha, were unable to join Fils in the second round. Jan Choinski overcame the 17-year-old Fonseca 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-4 for his first ATP Tour victory. The Briton, whose only previous tour-level win came at Wimbledon in 2023, next faces second seed Hubert Hurkacz.

#NextGenATP star Arthur Fils became the youngest Frenchman to record a match win at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters since Richard Gasquet in 2005 on Monday when he cruised past German lucky loser Yannick Hanfmann 6-0, 6-2.

The 19-year-old produced one of his best performances of the season in front of a vocal local crowd to record victory on his debut in the Principality. He hit 11 winners and struck just seven unforced errors according to Infosys ATP Stats to advance 63 minutes in the pair’s first Lexus ATP Head2Head series.

"I watched a lot this tournament on TV. I saw many champions. I'm happy to play here for the first time," Fils said. "Well, it's good to play the tournament, but it's also good to win matches, and I hope I'll keep coming here in the following years, and I'm sure it's going to become a milestone in my season."

Fils, who is currently No. 36 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, performed well on clay last season, winning his maiden tour-level title on the surface in Lyon. After failing to advance beyond the second round at tour-level clay-court events in Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Santiago and Estoril earlier this year, Fils will hope his victory against Hanfmann can kick start a run.

Fils, 19, is the youngest Frenchman to win a match in the Principality since then-18-year-old Gasquet upset Roger Federer in 2005. Fils will next play Italian Lorenzo Musetti after the Italian beat Taylor Fritz in straight sets on Sunday.
