Rune Rise Continues

After picking up just two tour-level wins in the first quarter of the season, #NextGenATP star Holger Rune found his rhythm on the European clay.

Just like Alcaraz in Madrid, the Dane celebrated his 19th birthday week by lifting a trophy. Rune stunned top seed Zverev in the second round at the BMW Open by American Express in Munich and didn’t drop a set on his way to a maiden ATP Tour title after Botic van de Zandschulp retired in the championship match.

“I’m super happy, of course,” said Rune. “Not the way I wanted it to end, but if I look through the week, what a week. I played some unbelievable tennis, really fighting my way through it. To be playing here in Munich and winning my first ATP title in front of such a brilliant crowd, I couldn’t really ask for more.”

Rune carried that form to Roland Garros, reaching a first Grand Slam quarter-final by upsetting Tsitsipas in four sets for a statement win on Court Philippe Chatrier. Despite defeat to Ruud in the last eight in Paris, the Dane’s exploits mean he starts his grass season at a career-high No. 28 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings, while he sits third in the Pepperstone ATP Race To Milan.

HOLGER RUNE ON THE WAY HE MANAGES HIS MINDSET - “I would say my mentality is good on the court. How I call it is to be the Holger 1, not to be so many other Holger types. There are two Holger types, one who is focussed everywhere and one who is focussed in the court and I want to be the one focussed on the court. I feel like all the great tournaments I’ve played this year I have been the Holger 1 and that’s really what I’m aiming for, and it is difficult, but it should be difficult because if it wasn’t, everybody would be able to be Top 10.”

“Roger Federer was maybe 40 times worse than I was” Holger Rune makes a shocking statement to justify his erratic behavior on court

Holger Rune, the 19-year-old Danish sensation had announced himself at the French Open 2022, where the youngster took down one of the pre-tournament favorites Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fourth round. Rune reached the quarterfinal in his debut at the Roland Garros. His great tennis stuck with the fans, but what got even more attention was his unruly behavior on the court in his quarterfinal encounter with Casper Ruud.

Rune lost to Ruud 1-6, 6-4, 6-7, 3-6 and the last two sets saw a lot of outbursts from him. He shouted at his box and also screamed at his mother to leave, which she did during the match. After his loss, the handshake with Ruud was equally cold. This little incident caught bigger fire after Rune said that Ruud screamed in his face in the locker room. Though with Ruud’s great attitude and likable persona, most people supported Ruud’s statement that this was a lie from the young Dane.

Holger Rune has become quite popular due to his performance in recent months, but his erratic on-court behavior has led the fans to term him as an ‘entitled brat’ and such. Talking to Ekstra Bladet about his behavior on-court, he justified it by saying: “If you saw Roger Federer as a youngster, he was maybe 40 times worse than I was – and he’s one of the most beloved tennis players on the tour, so I think I have plenty of time to get an even better image.”

Rune believes that his attitude towards the game is positive and so he doesn’t consider his behavior a problem in his growth as a player. He also believes that there should be some differences between the players. There should be some emotional players in the mix to make the sport more exciting and he said that he can improve his image just like Roger did, terming his behavior ’40 times worse than his’.
