Nakashima returns to winners' circle, Krueger wins Indian Wells Challenger

Americans Brandon Nakashima and Mitchell Krueger were among a group of four who returned to the ATP Challenger Tour winners’ circle on Sunday.

The 22-year-old Nakashima dropped just one set all week at the Tenerife Challenger 1 to earn his first title at any level since the 2022 Next Gen ATP Finals. His countryman Krueger triumphed at the Southern California Open 1, marking his first trophy since September 2021.

Nakashima, who was seeded fourth on the Canary island, downed second seed Pedro Martinez 6-3, 6-4 in the final to lift his fourth ATP Challenger crown.

“I knew I had to play some aggressive tennis and I was happy to be able to play at my best during the right moments,” Nakashima said. “I’m super happy to win the tournament here. It gives me a lot of confidence going forward.

“Last year was a tough year for me. Off court as well, I had a lot going on and had some tough moments but I’m happy with where I’m at now and slowly rebuilding the ranking and winning matches.”

#NextGenATP star Jakub Mensik will look to continue his breakthrough season at this month's BNP Paribas Open. The tournament announced on Friday that the Czech is one of five players to receive a wild card into the season’s first ATP Masters 1000 event.

The 18-year-old, who last week became the youngest finalist in Doha tournament history, holds the top spot in the PIF ATP Live Race to Jeddah. Mensik will make his ATP Masters 1000 debut in Indian Wells, where he joins Brandon Nakashima, Aleksandar Kovacevic, Patrick Kypson and Fabio Fognini as wild cards.

Nakashima has enjoyed a red-hot two months on the ATP Challenger Tour, boasting a 19-5 record at that level in 2024, including a title run in Tenerife. The California native will be joined by countrymen Kovacevic, who broke into the Top 100 in January, and Kypson, the 24-year-old who claimed his first tour-level victory in Delray Beach en route to the quarter-finals.

Former World No. 8 Fognini will make his 14th main-draw appearance in Indian Wells.

Qualifying wild cards were awarded to tour-veterans Lucas Pouille and Steve Johnson as well as Stefan Dostanic, Cooper Woestendick and 2023 NCAA singles champion Ethan Quinn.

On the WTA side, the BNP Paribas Open awarded main draw wild cards to Venus Williams, Caroline Wozniacki, Emma Raducanu, Paula Badosa, Karolina Pliskova, Amanda Anisimova, Ashlyn Krueger and McCartney Kessler.

That includes Top 20 stars Ben Shelton, Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe, while Sebastian Korda, Christopher Eubanks and Marcos Giron all sit inside the Top 50 of the PIF ATP Rankings. Brandon Nakashima has been racking up plenty of ATP Challenger Tour wins this season, including one title run. On Wednesday, the American translated that success to the ATP Tour with an opening victory in Indian Wells.

In his first tour-level match since last October at the Rolex Shanghai Masters, Nakashima scored a a 6-3, 7-6(3) result against countryman Christopher Eubanks without facing a break point.

"First of all, walking onto this court is super special for me," he said after earning the win on centre court. "Playing a guy like Chris, who has a big game, big serve, I knew I just had to do my best to hold my serve and knew I was going to get opportunities on his serve.

"I think this surface favors me a little bit more. With the slower surface, the ball's not coming at me as fast. But I'm happy with the way I played."

Nakashima converted on his lone break chance of the match, according to Infosys ATP Stats, and closed out the match in one hour, 21 minutes by seeing home a 3/0 lead in the second-set tie-break. Now 4-3 in Indian Wells, he has advanced to the second round in each of his four appearances, beginning in 2021.

The 22-year-old, who sits at No. 93 in the PIF ATP Rankings after falling out of the Top 100 last season, improved to 1-1 in his Lexus ATP Head2Head with Eubanks. The two are among a tournament-high 15 Americans in the 96-player men's singles main draw, a contingent led by 2022 champion Taylor Fritz.

Next up for Nakashima is a second-round meeting with 32nd seed Jiri Lehecka.
