1) Can Ruud Bounce Back? Ruud is back in action in Gstaad this week following a disappointing second-round exit against eventual champion Francisco Cerundolo in Bastad. Thankfully for the top seed, he has positive memories in Gstaad, having lifted the trophy at the clay-court event on tournament debut in 2021. The Norwegian will begin his title defence against Jiri Lehecka or Tomas Martin Etcheverry as he aims to win his third tour-level title of the season.

Earlier, Casper Ruud started his title defence with victory, overcoming #NextGenATP Czech Jiri Lehecka 6-3, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals.

The top seed dropped just one set en route to the title at the ATP 250 event last season and once again looked at home on the clay in Switzerland. The Norwegian saved all five break points he faced to advance after one hour and 39 minutes in their first ATP Head2Head meeting.

“I think it was a great match,” Ruud said in his on-court interview. “The conditions are quite challenging here with the altitude and the ball can fly. You need to serve and return well and I think I did that well all day. I started a little bit shakey, had some break points against me, but I was able to win that game and get going. It is nice to get a win again.”


Ruud, who suffered a disappointing opening-round exit in Bastad last week, will next meet Spaniard Jaume Munar.

“I have had great success here and in Geneva, so it feels very good to be back,” Ruud said. “It was a wish to play in Gstaad because we had great memories. This city is beautiful.

”It is nice to come back to a place where you have won before and hopefully I can do well at this tournament. It is a great atmosphere and I love playing in Switzerland.”

The World No. 5 is trying to win his third tour-level trophy of the season this week, having triumphed on clay in Buenos Aires and Geneva. Earlier this year, the 23-year-old also reached his first ATP Masters 1000 final in Miami and maiden Grand Slam championship match at Roland Garros.

Lehecka was aiming to reach his second tour-level quarter-final of the season in Gstaad after reaching the semi-finals in Rotterdam. The 20-year-old is sixth in the Pepperstone ATP Race To Milan.

Ruud’s Quickfire SF Win Sets Berrettini Clash In Gstaad

Defending champion improves record at ATP 250 event to 7-0
Top seed Casper Ruud produced a clinical performance to see off the challenge of Albert Ramos-Vinolas with a comfortable 6-2, 6-0 semi-final victory at the EFG Swiss Open Gstaad on Saturday afternoon.

In a battle between the past two champions at the clay-court ATP 250 event in Switzerland, Ruud was dominant throughout. The Norwegian broke 2019 champion Ramos-Vinolas’ serve five times and did not face a single break point on his own delivery as he charged to a 62-minute victory.

Ruud will take on second seed Matteo Berrettini in Sunday’s championship match as both players seek their third title of 2022 and their second crown in Gstaad. Both finalists are unbeaten in the Swiss mountains, with Berrettini having triumphed on tournament debut in 2018 and Ruud defeating Hugo Gaston to lift the trophy on his first appearance at the event a year ago.

A lightning-fast start from Ruud on Saturday saw his heavy baseline hitting earn a breakthrough on the Ramos-Vinolas serve in the second game. That set the tone for the match, as the Norwegian consistently pounced on any short balls offered by the Spaniard with his huge forehand.

A further break of the Ramos-Vinolas serve clinched the opening set for the top seed, and he was just as clinical in the second set as the Spaniard continued to struggle behind his delivery. Ruud wrapped up his win having won 22/38 points on return in a commanding all-around performance.
