He will continue this week’s title quest in the semi-finals on Saturday against third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime, who ousted French wild card Harold Mayot 7-5, 6-1.

Shevchenko was aiming to reach his second tour-level semi-final after advancing to the final in Metz last year. It was just the second time two Kazakhstani players reached the quarter-finals at an ATP Tour event. The last time came in 2013 in Moscow, where Mikhail Kukushkin advanced to the final and Andrey Golubev the quarter-finals.


Auger-Aliassime, 23, was dominant behind his serve to march past Mayot in one hour, 19 minutes. The Canadian struck 10 aces and fought off the only two break points he faced to reach his first semi-final of the season. He will next look to extend his 2-1 Lexus ATP Head2Head record against Bublik.

"To get three breaks in the first set means I was returning really well and then it was just adding the serve to that," Auger-Aliassime said. "Then being a bit more consistent, a bit more patient and disciplined. I felt like I was playing really good."

In the top half of the draw, Holger Rune overcame a tight battle against Michael Mmoh, defeating the American 7-6(6), 6-4 after two hours and two minutes. A pivotal moment came for Rune when he fought off a set point at 5/6 in the first-set tie-break, erasing Mmoh's chance with a 123 mph serve which the World No. 133 failed to return.

Felix Auger-Aliassime rode a near-unstoppable serving performance to a second-round spot Wednesday at the Open 13 Provence in Marseille.

The seventh-seeded Canadian overcame another man with an imposing delivery, home favourite Quentin Halys, in a confident start to his campaign at the indoor ATP 250. Auger-Aliassime prevailed 6-2, 7-5 in the pair’s maiden Lexus ATP Head2Head clash to build on his semi-final run in Montpellier last week.

“It’s never easy,” said Auger-Aliassime when asked about facing an opponent for the first time. “We’ve practised together before and he’s been on Tour for a few years, so of course I know him, and I know his qualities.

“I think I started the perfect way, hitting my targets and being aggressive, keeping him on defence and without much time. So it was the perfect start and then he was serving too good in the second set until I got lucky with a double fault. I was trying to put pressure on him whenever I had a second serve [to return]. I think I played a very complete match.”


The No. 28 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings, Auger-Aliassime won 93 per cent (27/29) of points behind his first delivery against Halys, according to Infosys ATP Stats. The 23-year-old is now 8-3 in Marseille, where he reached the championship match in 2020 and 2022.

“I love playing well here. I have great memories,” said Auger-Aliassime, who plays Zhang Zhizhen in the second round. “Twice a finalist, so obviously I’ve won some matches here but didn’t go all the way to the end. Let’s see if I can be part of another final here, but the week is so young and there is still a lot of tennis to play.”

Felix rides his luck in Rotterdam

Felix Auger-Aliassime survived three set points in a dramatic second-set tie-break to see off net-rushing American Maxime Cressy 7-6(3), 7-6(8).

The 2022 champion fired 18 aces and rode his luck deep in the tie-break when Cressy looked like he would claim a mini-break at 8/8 when he followed a strong cross-court forehand to net, only to see the Canadian frame a forehand lob winner.

"The margins were very small and I had luck on my side in the end. To hit a shank lob to set up match point was quite crazy," Felix said. "But I gave myself opportunities and you create your own luck in a way."

The former World No. 6, who enters this year's tournament unbeaten, next faces the winner of fellow former Rotterdam champion and second seed Andrey Rublev and Belgium's Zizou Bergs.
