In other action, sixth seed Emil Ruusuvouri maintained his strong start to the season, defeating defending champion Jiri Vesely 6-3, 6-4 to reach his second semi-final of the year.

The Finn, who enjoyed a run to the last four at the Melbourne Summer Set in January, won 84 per cent (27/32) of his first-serve points against Vesely to advance in 78 minutes. The 22-year-old now leads the Czech 2-0 in their ATP Head2Head series.

Ruusuvuori is aiming to win his maiden tour-level trophy this week and will next play Pole Kamil Majchrzak.

Sixth seed Emil Ruusuvuori broke new ground Saturday at the Tata Open Maharashtra, soaring into his first tour-level final in Pune.

The Finn fired 10 aces and rallied back from a break down in the second set to overcome Kamil Majchrzak 6-4, 7-6(0) in one hour and 47 minutes, improving his ATP Head2Head record to 2-0 against the Pole.

“I really like this place,” Ruusuvuori said in his on-court interview. “I still haven’t lost a set. The whole match was very good today and I am very happy to be in the final. Every point in the tie-break is very important. I started well and 7/0 is good.”

Ruusuvuori, who is making his debut at the ATP 250 event, was competing in his second semi-final of the season, having advanced to the last four at the Melbourne Summer Set in January, where he lost to Rafael Nadal. The World No. 87 is now 7-2 on the year.


Prior to his win against Majchrzak, the 22-year-old had lost all four of his previous semi-finals at this level. The World No. 87 held his nerve in Pune in the second-set tie-break to ensure he would not fall at the same stage again, setting up a championship match clash against either Swedish qualifier Elias Ymer or three-time tour-level titlist Joao Sousa.

Emil Ruusuvuori’s excellent progress in 2022 continued as he brought Finland level against Belgium. The World No. 71, who reached a first tour-level final in Pune in January, beat Zizou Bergs 6-3, 7-5 to get his team on the board in the Finnish city of Espoo.

2015 and 2017 runners-up Belgium had already surged into the lead thanks to former World No. 7 David Goffin, who battled past Otto Virtanen 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 in just over two hours.

The winning team from each of this weekend’s 12 qualification ties will qualify for the Davis Cup Finals, to be held in September and November across four different cities.

World No. 163 Zizou Bergs was the hero for Belgium, overcoming Finland’s Otto Virtanen, 6-4, 6-0, to complete the turnaround for his nation.

Harri Heliovaara and Emil Ruusuvuori had given Finland a 2-1 lead in the tie with their 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(5) victory over Sander Gille and David Goffin. However, Belgium would not be denied, with Goffin cruising past Ruusuvuori, 6-4, 6-2, before Bergs won the tie.
