Also on Saturday evening, Stefanos Tsitsipas dug deep to avoid a second consecutive early Masters 1000 exit. The sixth seed rallied past Jan-Lennard Struff 6-7(1), 6-4, 6-4 to book his second-round spot.

Tsitsipas became a Masters 1000 champion for the third time last month in Monte-Carlo and he also reached the final in Barcelona. The Greek then fell to Thiago Monteiro in his Madrid opener, however, and he looked in danger of being upset again on the Rome clay, where Struff’s huge forehand dictated play in the early stages.

Despite dropping the opening set in a tie-break, Tsitsipas held firm to engineer a two-hour, 32-minute comeback win. He broke Struff’s serve twice in both the second and third sets, ultimately improving to 11-2 for the year on clay after converting five of the 16 break points he earned.

The Greek’s next opponent in Rome will be Cameron Norrie, who earlier held off Jaume Munar 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Tsitsipas has reached the semi-finals on three of his six main-draw appearances in the Italian capital, where he went on to contest the championship match in 2022.

Stefanos Tsitsipas continued his impressive clay-court season on Monday at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, where he dispatched British lefty Cameron Norrie 6-2, 7-6(1) to reach the fourth round in Rome.

"My shots were landing deep in the court and creating a lot of angles. It is difficult for my opponent to control those shots and I think I did that in the first set," Tsitsipas said. "Precise, one might call it. The first set I did a great job in making him feel uncomfortable, at least that is what I felt from the other side of the court."


The Greek dictated in the first set, taking large cuts off the forehand wing to overpower Norrie. Tsitsipas was made to battle in the second set and recovered from squandering a break advantage to advance after one hour and 33 minutes.

"The second set was not going to be easy," Tsitsipas said. "He is a top player and knows how to adapt to situations and fix things, so I knew that the second set might present a different type of challenge. It did and I had to find solutions. He was holding serve a little more comfortably and my shots were perhaps not doing as much damage.

"My patience and determination in the tie-break, trying to hang in there and make as many balls as I could and make as many balls as deep as possible so I didn't have to defend much was something that gave me the 7/1 in the tie-break. That was a relief. It was getting really close and the match was played in a few small details."

With his 23rd win of the year, Tsitsipas improved to 2-1 in his Lexus ATP Head2Head series against Norrie. Tsitsipas also beat the 28-year-old in the Lyon final in 2021.

The No. 8 player in the PIF ATP Rankings, who hit 27 winners and committed nine unforced errors, according to Infosys ATP Stats, is 12-2 on clay in 2024, having won his third ATP Masters 1000 crown in Monte-Carlo. The 25-year-old will play Alex de Minaur in the fourth round.

The former Nitto ATP Finals champion Tsitsipas has performed strongly in Rome throughout his career, reaching the final in 2022 and the last four in 2019 and 2023.

Norrie was aiming to reach the fourth round at an ATP Masters 1000 event for the fourth time.

Stefanos Tsitsipas continued his domination of Alex de Minaur with a 6-1, 6-2 win on Tuesday at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia. The Greek raced through a 23-minute opening set and never looked back in a supreme display of clay-court tennis that mixed patience with power at all the right moments.

"I tried to do the best that I could out there on the court by bringing the best quality on my strokes, and I delivered," Tsitsipas said post-match. "Throughout the entire match I was pretty consistent with my serves and the ball placement. I was able to construct those points patiently and then wait for those shorter balls to come up.

"I really felt that my opponent felt the heaviness and the depth of my ball. It gave me courage, it gave me great belief in myself that I can continue pushing in that sense. I knew that I had something good working for me today."


Tsitsipas saw his perfect 10-0 Lexus ATP Head2Head record against De Minaur spoiled when the Aussie won their last meeting in Acapulco, but the sixth seed reasserted himself in Rome with one of his best performances of the year. Now 13-2 on clay this season, the Monte-Carlo champion and Barcelona finalist is into his 23rd ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final and his fourth straight in Rome. The Greek continues his impressive turnaround after an 11-6 start to the 2024 season on hard courts, a relative slump that saw him briefly drop out of the Top 10 of the PIF ATP Rankings.

Hitting with supreme confidence off both baseline wings, the Greek surrendered serve for the only time at 4-1 in the second set, but broke back immediately to extinguish any hope of a De Minaur comeback. Tsitsipas won 56 per cent of his return points (23/41) and converted on five of eight break points, according to Infosys ATP Stats.

Tsitsipas' 12 clay-court quarter-finals at the ATP Masters 1000 level are tied for sixth-most all-time, level with Andy Murray, Carlos Moya and Albert Costa. Five of those quarter-finals have come in Rome, where Tsitsipas reached the 2022 final and 2023 semis. He also reached the semis at the event in 2019, one year after qualifying for his tournament debut.

De Minaur was bidding for his second clay win against a Top 10 player in the PIF ATP Rankings, with his lone previous win coming against Cameron Norrie in Barcelona in 2022. The Aussie has had more success against the Top 10 on other surfaces, with his four victories against those elite players this season second only to Jannik Sinner (5).

Tsitsipas will next meet 21st seed Nicolas Jarry on Thursday after the Chilean's 7-5, 6-3 win against Alexandre Muller earlier on Tuesday.
