Monfils One Win Away From Second London Berth

Frenchman to face Shapovalov for trip to Nitto ATP Finals
France's Gael Monfils is one win away from returning to the Nitto ATP Finals. The Frenchman rallied to beat Radu Albot of Moldova 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 and reach the Rolex Paris Masters quarter-finals on Thursday evening.
Monfils hit 12 aces and soaked up the Paris crowd support during the memorable comeback that saw him save seven of nine (78%) break points. Now the Frenchman needs to beat #NextGenATP Canadian Denis Shapovalov to secure a second trip to the season finale, to be held 10-17 November at The O2 in London. Monfils made his debut at the season-ending event in 2016.
Only one spot for the eight-man field remains as defending champion Alexander Zverev of Germany became the seventh player to qualify on Wednesday.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the 2008 Paris champion, is also through to the quarter-finals, marking the first time at least two Frenchmen have reached the Paris quarter-finals since 2012, when three Frenchmen – Tsonga, Michael Llodra and Gilles Simon – did. Llodra and Simon went on to reach the semi-finals.

Shapovalov is playing his best tennis just in time for next week's Next Gen ATP Finals, which starts Tuesday at the Allianz Cloud in Milan. The 20-year-old Canadian earned his third Top 10 win and second of 2019, fighting past Zverev 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.

The match featured 30 break points, but Shapovalov came through the most, converting five of his 17 chances against Zverev. On 20 October, Shapovalov won his first ATP Tour title at the Intrum Stockholm Open and now he's into his fourth Masters 1000 quarter-final and second of the season (Miami).

Choć Gael Monfils jest jednym z najbardziej lubianych przez kibiców tenisistów w rozgrywkach, nie przekłada się to na jego sukcesy. W karierze wygrał osiem turniejów głównego cyklu, ale żadnego rangi wyższej niż ATP 500. Na drodze do największych triumfów bardzo często stawali mu gracze z tzw. "Wielkiej Trójki" - Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal i Novak Djoković. On sam czuje jednak dumę, że może występować w tych samych czasach, co Szwajcar, Hiszpan oraz Serb.

- Mam szczęście, że z nimi gram - mówił w rozmowie z portalem sport360.com. - To najlepsza generacja, jaką mieliśmy w tenisie, a bycie jej częścią jest zaszczytem i honorem. Rywalizacja z takimi legendami to po prostu coś niesamowitego.

Dla Francuza grudzień jest bardzo intensywny. Nie tylko przygotowuje się do startu nowego sezonu, ale i bierze udział w turniejach pokazowych. W zeszłym tygodniu wystąpił w Rijadzie, gdzie pokonał Stana Wawrinkę i przegrał z Fabio Fogninim, a w tym zagra w Abu Zabi. - Jestem podekscytowany, mogąc trenować. Już zacząłem pracę nad wprowadzaniem pewnych zmian, więc czuje się mocniejszy w perspektywie nowego roku - stwierdził.

W I rundzie imprezy Mubadala World Tennis Championships, w czwartek, paryżanin zmierzy się ze Stefanosem Tsitsipasem. Jeśli wygra, w półfinale, w piątek, zagra z Djokoviciem. - Nie mogę się doczekać. Grałem tu raz i było to wspaniałe doświadczenie. To znakomity turniej, bo w warunkach meczowych grasz z najlepszymi na świecie, i idealna okazja, by wprowadzić pewne poprawki. To też świetny moment, aby się przekonać, gdzie jesteś - powiedział.

Monfils zakończył sezon 2019 na 10. miejscu w rankingu ATP. Zapytany o cele na nowe rozgrywki, odparł: - Chcę odkryć pewne miejsca, w których nigdy nie byłem. Gdybym awansował do najlepszej "piątki", byłoby to coś niesamowitego.

Playing the Brasil Open in Sao Paulo, Gael Monfils spoke about the legal trouble that has waylaid former world no. 1 Victoria Azarenka. The Belarusian is involved in a legal battle with her former boyfriend for their son's custody. 'It's very difficult to speak about it,' the 31-year-old admitted. 'I don't even know how I can speak about it.
It's a very sad situation that sees one of my best friends [being] involved. I feel very nervous [about] this. She is a great, incredible mother. She was always at the top in her career. Now what I can tell Victoria's fans is that she is fighting, is a happy person, a strong, fighting girl who never gives up and whom I hope to see soon again. She will be stronger.' After withdrawing from Auckland, Australian Open and Doha this year, Azarenka has committed to play the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells that starts on March 7th.

Monfils, Paire Power France To Opening ATP Cup Win

Experience overcame youth on Saturday in Brisbane as French veterans Gael Monfils and Benoit Paire led the European country to a convincing 2-1 win against Chile in both teams' opening ATP Cup tie.
Monfils, 33, clinched the victory on day two of the inaugural 24-team event being held across Brisbane, Perth and Sydney with a 6-3, 7-5 win against Chile's No. 1, 23-year-old Cristian Garin. The Frenchman ended 2019 with his second Top 10 year-end finish and was in mid-season form at Pat Rafter Arena, chasing down everything and routinely making Garin hit one more shot.
Monfils broke once in the opening set and rallied from a break down in the second set to get off the court in 80 minutes.

“It was great today. I think he had a good period in the second set, actually a strong period. It shook me a little bit,” Monfils said. “But I think slowly I get back in shape. I had a good pre-season and then I had to stop because I hurt a bit myself during the pre-season. And then I come back a little bit stronger. And here I was hitting it quite a lot actually and it felt great.”
Benoit Paire gave France a 1-0 lead by remaining perfect against Nicolas Jarry. The 30-year-old Paire saved nine of 11 break points to win 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-3 and move to 3-0 against the 24-year-old Chilean.
Jarry led by a set and a break, but Paire broke twice in the second set to force a decider. He also navigated himself out of trouble late in the third set when, serving at 4-3, 40/40, he didn't let Jarry face a break point and held. Paire broke in the next game for the win.

“I was able to play well a couple moments throughout the whole match, but when I had a little bit of more advantage, a set and a break, I lost a little of my head. I missed many things. I hesitated and doubted myself a little bit,” Jarry said. “I think that's just the key of where the match went.”
Paire earned a career-high 34 wins in 2019, a season that was highlighted by two of his three ATP Tour titles (Marrakech, Lyon).
“I feel good, I feel confident and really happy to play. So it was important for me, and I think it's important for the French team because we enjoy to play together. We are very happy to be here and, honestly, with the team it's not like a normal team, it's a more fun team,” Paire said.
In doubles, Garin/Jarry beat Nicolas Mahut/Edouard Roger-Vasselin 7-5, 6-2. “I think in this format you have to be 100 per cent every point,” Garin said. “We lost against France, who is a really good country. They have the best players in the world. And it's like that, we have to play every point as 100 per cent. Nico was very close today. I think I had my chances in the second set and the third set.”

Gael Monfils saved all seven break points he faced to beat Yen-Hsun Lu 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. The 10th seed, who reached the quarter-finals in 2016, will meet Ivo Karlovic for a third-round spot. The 40-year-old withstood 49 winners to beat Vasek Pospisil 7-6(4), 6-4, 7-5. Monfils leads Karlovic 4-2 in their ATP Head2Head rivalry.

Who wouldn’t want to see the gregarious Gael Monfils reach the latter stages in Melbourne?

Because of his ridiculous athleticism, pace and ambitious shot-making, the Frenchman is sometimes underrated for his achievements.

The 33-year-old has previously made the final four at Roland Garros (2008) and US Open (2016), alongside a quarterfinal ticket in Melbourne back in 2016. He’s not simply a showman, he has real major pedigree.

A relatively easy passage so far Down Under means Monfils heads into the third round against mercurial qualifier Ernests Gulbis physically fresh, with a great chance to make the second week.

If he can conserve his energy, the world No.10 could conjure up a fascinating series of matches.
