De Minaur Ready To Rumble At Next Gen ATP Finals

The experience of competing in the Next Gen ATP Finals has helped propel numerous rising stars forward in their careers, but even Alex de Minaur is surprised at how quickly he’s risen up the ATP Rankings this year.

He arrives in Milan at a career-high ATP Ranking of No. 18 after a banner year that’s included his first three ATP Tour titles in Sydney (d. Seppi), Atlanta (d. Fritz) and Zhuhai (d. Mannarino). De Minaur was one of the pack among his #NextGenATP peers in Milan 12 months ago, but has firmly established himself as the top seed this year.

“It’s been an unbelievable year and not one that I expected. I’m very happy with what I’ve been able to accomplish,” De Minaur said ahead of his first match on Tuesday against Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. “I’m just happy to be here in Milan. I had a blast last year, so I’m looking forward to coming out here and competing again.”

De Minaur quickly took to the unique scoring format during his debut in Milan last year, sprinting through his three matches in Group B and then outlasting Spaniard Jaume Munar in a five-set semi-final. Although he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the championship match, he credited that defeat with fueling his wins in the coming months.

“Finishing runner-up last season was a bit of a bittersweet ending,” De Minaur said. “I wasn’t able to get it done in the final, but it was a great end to a very positive year. I was able to bring that momentum to make sure I had a very positive pre-season and did all the right things.”

The fruits of De Minaur’s labour were revealed at the start of the year. The Aussie shrugged off an 0-2 record in tour-level finals to clinch his maiden ATP Tour title on home soil in Sydney. Rain pushed the semi-finals and final to Sunday, but he showed supreme fitness to become the youngest winner at the event since mentor Lleyton Hewitt took the title in 2001.

“It was one of the most incredible days to be able to win my first ATP Tour title in my hometown,” De Minaur said. “There were lots of nerves and different expectations coming into that week. I was able to play in front of family and friends. It was a very special tournament for me overall.”

De Minaur’s relentless retrieving and fiery competitiveness have led to plenty of other special tournaments this year, but finishing his season with a title in Milan would be particularly memorable. But true to his character, he’s not getting ahead of himself. The Aussie brushed off any expectations fans may have of him as the top seed and said he’s solely focussed on his next match against Davidovich Fokina.

“Every match is completely different,” De Minaur said. “There’s been lots to learn from, but now I’m here in Milan and have to get ready for the match tomorrow. I’ve just been taking it day by day this year.”

De Minaur arrived in Milan at a career-high No. 18 in the ATP Rankings. The 20-year-old used the momentum from his runner-up finish at last year’s event (l. To Tsitsipas) to create a breakout season that includes his first three ATP Tour titles at the Sydney International (d. Seppi), BB&T Atlanta Open (d. Fritz) and Huajin Securities Zhuhai Championships (d. Mannarino). He further proved his mettle indoors by reaching the final two weeks ago at the Swiss Indoors Basel (l. to Federer).

De Minaur Powers Past Kecmanovic In Milan

Aussie remains unbeaten in Group A
Top-seeded Aussie Alex de Minaur produced a statement win on Wednesday at the Next Gen ATP Finals, holding off Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic 4-1, 4-3(4) 1-4, 4-0 in the second match of the day in Milan.
“This is what you expect in these conditions. A match can turn quickly. I didn’t play badly, [but] he just played well in the important moments,” De Minaur said. “I just had to regroup and stick to my game.”
De Minaur now holds the lead in Group A with a 2-0 record, while Kecmanovic drops to 1-1. The top seed next plays Norwegian Casper Ruud as he looks to go undefeated in round-robin play for the second year in a row at this event.
“[Casper] played a hell of a match today and it’s going to be incredibly tough, but this is what we’re here for,” De Minaur said. “Everyone is playing at a high level, so I have to be ready for it.”

Kecmanovic started off slowly while De Minaur came out firing from the first point. The top seed broke in the opening game by winning a lengthy baseline exchange and secured another break to wrap up the opening set.
The Serbian used the in-match coaching option before the second set and came out with a new game plan, playing closer to the lines and attempting to shorten the points. The strategy worked as he applied pressure and broke De Minaur at 1-1. But with Kecmanovic serving for the set at 3-2, the Aussie stepped up and ripped a forehand winner in the deciding point to force a tie-break. De Minaur rode that momentum and dominated the tie-break for a commanding advantage.
Kecmanovic stuck to his tactics and was finally rewarded in the third set. A brave net approach from the Serbian yielded a backhand volley winner and a break at 2-1. He then comfortably held in the next game to close the gap.
De Minaur was unfazed, though. He regrouped and went on to produce his best tennis of the week, dropping just five points in the last set to prevail in one hour and 25 minutes. The top seed hit more than double the number of winners (23) to unforced errors (11).

De Minaur Reaches Milan SFs With Record-Breaking Win

Top seed Alex de Minaur produced his best performance of the week on Thursday at the Next Gen ATP Finals, firing 23 winners to reach the semi-finals with a 4-1, 4-0, 4-2 win over Norwegian Casper Ruud in just 61 minutes.

De Minaur clinched his spot in the last four after winning the opening set against Ruud. The Aussie finished 3-0 in Group A, marking the second straight year he’s gone undefeated in round-robin play at this event. His victory marked a record-breaking seventh win in Milan, breaking a tie with Andrey Rublev. Ruud has been eliminated after dropping to 1-2.

The second match of the day between Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic and Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina will determine the other semi-finalist from Group A. Davidovich Fokina must defeat Kecmanovic in three or four sets or else Kecmanovic will advance out of round-robin action.

De Minaur Thriving On & Off Court In Milan

Top-seeded Aussie Alex de Minaur is in a familiar situation on the court this year at the Next Gen ATP Finals, but he’s also enjoying plenty of new experiences away from it.
Last year’s runner-up (l. to Tsitsipas) went undefeated in round-robin action once again and now faces second-seeded American Frances Tiafoe in Friday’s semi-finals. De Minaur also looked forward to Milan for the chance to be around his #NextGenATP peers. He's been mingling with close friends like Tiafoe and also spending time with players he was less familiar with.
“I don't think I’ve ever had much to do with Jannik Sinner. After this week, I’ve been able to get to know him and hit with him,” De Minaur said. “There is a lot more going on at other tournaments, a lot more players. It's just eight of us here, so we're bound to get to know each other a bit better. I enjoy that aspect, for sure.”

De Minaur has won more matches (7) than anyone at this event, which reflects his love of the unique scoring format. The Aussie is typically a fast starter and the shortened-set format rewards coming out firing from the first ball. He also enjoys many of the innovations such as Hawk-Eye Live, the electronic line-calling system which debuted at the inaugural event in 2017, and hopes to see them carried over to the ATP Tour.
“There are a lot of different things that I really like,” De Minaur said. “The Hawk-Eye Live [takes] away any sort of problem on the court. You believe Hawk-Eye. so if it's called out, it's out. If it's a close call, they show you the replay. No more troubles. You don't have bad calls.”

His success this week is also due to his tireless focus on improving his mental toughness. De Minaur has endured several challenging moments and dropped a set in each of his first two matches to Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic and Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. But after losing his momentum, he regrouped to win the remaining sets with a 4-0 or 4-1 scoreline.
The Aussie has displayed his ability to bounce back on several occasions this year. He was two points from losing both sets during the Sydney final, but rallied to defeat Andreas Seppi for his first ATP Tour title. He’s also delivered his best tennis during clutch moments in recent months, winning five of his past six matches that went to a deciding set.
”It's all part of the work I have done with my psychologist. It's about not getting down on yourself,” De Minaur said. “I'm not saying that I don't get angry or frustrated. It's about trying to minimise the time that you’re frustrated.”

The Aussie used last year’s runner-up finish in Milan as a springboard to his best year on Tour. He arrived this week at a career-high No. 18 in the ATP Rankings after a season in which he claimed his first three ATP Tour titles in Sydney (d. Seppi), Atlanta (d. Fritz) and Zhuhai (d. Mannarino). He further proved his mettle indoors by reaching the final two weeks ago in Basel (l. to Federer).

“It helps to constantly stay focussed. Every point counts, so you've got to be on top of things,” De Minaur said. “I can definitely take that onto the Tour. If I manage to do what I've been doing here on the Tour, it will help me win a lot of matches.”

FROM FRIEND TO FOE: DE MINAUR OUSTS TIAFOE TO REACH MILAN FINAL

Top seed Alex de Minaur and second seed Frances Tiafoe have spoken highly of each other all week at the Next Gen ATP Finals, but their fist pumps and roars after winners in Friday’s semi-final made it clear that their friendship would be put aside for the night.

After 73 minutes of high-quality tennis, it was the Aussie who moved past Tiafoe 4-2, 4-1, 0-4, 4-2 and reached the Milan final for the second consecutive year. De Minaur improved to 2-0 in his FedEx ATP Head2Head rivalry against the American.

Awaiting him in the championship match is the winner of Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic and Italian Jannik Sinner. De Minaur has never played Sinner, but he beat Kecmanovic on Wednesday in their lone FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting.

De Minaur Praises Sinner: 'He Was Just Too Good'

Aussie reflects on second runner-up showing in Milan
Alex de Minaur’s solid baseline tennis gives him plenty of chances to gain momentum in matches and the Aussie typically uses those opportunities well. But in Saturday’s title match against Jannik Sinner at the Next Gen ATP Finals, his straight-sets defeat was due in part to his missed opportunities. The top-seeded Aussie couldn’t convert any of his nine break points on the night, including seven in the second set.
But statistics can be deceiving. De Minaur credited Sinner with not allowing him to play a role in critical points that could have shifted the momentum.
“He could not have played any better on the break points. [In the first game], I missed a rally ball. Out of nine break points, I'm pretty sure that's the best chance I had,” De Minaur said. “Maybe if I had gotten a couple of those break points early, it would have been a completely different match. It ended up being that he just played too good.”

De Minaur admitted not being familiar with Sinner prior to this week, but they practised together and got to know each other off the court in Milan. He praised the Italian as a “genuine, humble, grounded sort of kid,” and believes the Italian’s breakout run in Milan is only a sign of things to come.
“Jannik is a hell of a player and he was too good. I'm sure that if he keeps this level up, he's going to quickly rise up the [ATP] Rankings,” De Minaur said. “He's still so young and [does] not [have] a lot of experience on Tour. That's why I think he’s where he's at, but come next year, that's going to quickly change.”
Although De Minaur was understandably disappointed to leave Milan with another runner-up showing, he was able to look at the positives of his best year on Tour. The 20-year-old arrived this week at a career-high No. 18 in the ATP Rankings after earning his three tour-level titles in Sydney (d. Seppi), Atlanta (d. Fritz) and Zhuhai (d. Mannarino). He also finished runner-up in Basel (l. to Federer) and scored his first Top 10 win against Kei Nishikori at the US Open.
The Aussie’s inspired run last year helped serve as a springboard to success. With preseason plans already locked in, he’s confident that he can replicate the feat in 2020.
“I don't think it would be very smart if I judge my season with this one match,” De Minaur said. “I’ve had my best season yet and it's all been thanks to a lot of hard work that we put in. I'm very happy to be able to sit down and know that I finished the year at No. 18. It's of a goal that we put ourselves to and I'm happy to be able to finish off the year like that.”

Alex de Minaur broke into the spotlight in Australia in 2018, reaching the semi-finals in Brisbane and his first ATP Tour championship match in Sydney. This year, he lifted his maiden trophy in his home country, defeating veteran Andreas Seppi 7-5, 7-6(5) to triumph at the Sydney International.

"It's surreal. I couldn't think of a better place to get my first win," said De Minaur. "It's been tough, because I have played a couple of finals and things haven't gone my way. To finally be able to take that step further and get my first win, it's something that's really special in front of friends and family and on the courts I grew up [on]. [These are] definitely memories that are going to last forever."

The first first-time winner of the season also ended up being the youngest, emerging victorious at his home event when he was 19. De Minaur became the youngest Sydney champion since his mentor Lleyton Hewitt lifted the trophy in 2001. He was also the first Aussie to win the event since Bernard Tomic in 2013.

Australian No. 1 Alex de Minaur has had the first glimpse of the silverware for the newest tournament in world tennis, the ATP Cup.
The magnificent silver trophy was unveiled at Kangaroo Point in Brisbane by ATP Cup Tournament Director Tom Larner, marking 13 days until the inaugural event begins from 3 to 12 January 2020.
The bespoke ATP Cup design is both a tribute to tennis’ past and a celebration of its future.

The traditional shape is a nod to the history of the sport, with the contemporary shard construction symbolic of the innovative new format of the ATP Cup.
“The ATP Cup will showcase the top male players from 24 countries and this is the trophy they’ll be playing for,” Tom Larner said.
“Players have embraced this new team competition and we can’t think of a better way to kick start both the global tennis season and the Australian summer.”
De Minaur, who will represent Australia alongside Nick Kyrgios, John Millman, John Peers, Chris Guccione and captain Lleyton Hewitt, said he was looking forward to competing at the first edition of the ATP Cup.
“The Aussies are pumped to be starting the season in Brisbane and standing here in front of the ATP Cup, seeing the trophy up close for the first time, really brings to life what we are playing for in just a couple of weeks’ time,” he said.
Made from sterling silver, the stunning symmetrical design of the ATP Cup consists of 24 shards, with each representing one of the 24 countries in competition. The shards support a silver stem adorned with a hand-blown glass silver sphere, replicating both a traditional tennis ball and the hemisphere logo of the event.

The trophy’s base is handcrafted from native Banksia hardwood and is finished with a silver plaque, which awaits the engraving of the first ATP Cup champion team.
The ATP Cup has been designed and handcrafted by industry leaders in precious metals, ABC Bullion, who also craft the Australian Open men’s singles trophy, the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup, and the Melbourne Cup.
“With Australia hosting the inaugural ATP Cup it is only appropriate the trophy is made in Australia and from Australian silver,” Darren May of ABC Bullion said.
“It has been a true team effort to produce this team’s trophy in Australia – from the local miners, to the designers, fabricators and refinery workers.”

De Minaur On Competing With Aussies: 'We Would Do Anything For Each Other'

Australia will participate in the inaugural ATP Cup in 2020, receiving a wild card into the 24-country event. One of the two players who has committed to participate is #NextGenATP Australian star Alex de Minaur, who won his first ATP Tour title earlier this year at home in Sydney, where he was born.

De Minaur has reached his first tour-level quarter-final, semi-final, championship match as well as earned his maiden trophy in Australia. The 20-year-old greatly enjoys competing at home, and De Minaur spoke to ATPCup.com about his expectations for the new event, what it means to represent his country and more.

What are some of your first tennis memories from Australia?
I started hitting tennis balls when I was four years old and got signed up to a little tennis centre with three or four synthetic grass courts at the time in Carrs Park, in Sydney. That’s where it all started for me.

Do you have any memory in particular from when you first visited that centre?
I just loved going to practice. My parents originally signed me up to see how I would like it and from then on I just wanted to come back and play more and more.

You’ve spoken about watching guys like Lleyton Hewitt from your country growing up and how important that was to you. Were there any matches that stick out in your mind and why?
I remember watching a lot of matches, especially Lleyton growing up. He had a lot of epic matches and I used to stay up and watch. He had that late one at the Aussie Open against Baghdatis that finished at like 4am. It was pretty cool because then I get to ask him about how he felt the next day and all the behind the scenes stuff.

Has he told you anything that caught your attention from that match?
Yeah of course. A couple things here and there. It’s pretty funny. He told me that he went and had McDonald’s afterwards, so there’ve been some pretty funny stories.

One of the interesting things for you is that this team competition will actually be a home event for you. So how special will it be to not just represent your country, but to do it at home?
It’s going to be really cool. I can’t wait. I love playing at home and I think in team competition you can feel the support even more. It’s exciting times and I know at least for the time being, me and Nick, we’re really pumped to play at home.

Have you spoken to Nick about the ATP Cup yet?
Sure. We’ve been speaking about it for a while now. We both can’t wait for the moment to come so we can be side by side and represent Australia in the ATP Cup. I think we’ve got a good team and we’re pumped.

We don’t have the teams finalised yet, but out of all the Aussie guys, if you could take one shot from all of the Aussie guys, what would it be and why?
Serve I would take Nick’s. Forehand I would take Popyrin’s. Backhand I would take John Millman’s. Volleys I would take Jordan Thompson or John Peers. They both have great volleys.

It’s no secret that a lot of the Aussie guys spend a lot of time together on the ATP Tour? What are some of the funniest memories you have from your time together?
A lot happens behind closed doors, so probably should not mention them. But all I can say is it’s great to have them and every tournament where we’re in the same week together, we try to hang out together. The chemistry between us all is great. We all want the best for each other. Honestly, we would do anything for each other.

What are three things you love most about Australia?
I love the Aussie crowd. I love the beaches in Sydney. I love the food as well. There’s such a variety. I love a good Chicken Parmi at the pub. That’s probably my favourite meal.

When you’re on the road, what reminds you of Australia?
I feel like everyone is so nice. Just the way they speak, how you doin mate, good on ya mate. It just feels like everyone is close and I love that about Australia. It just reminds me of being close with everyone.

The 20-year-old Aussie fell short in his second Next Gen ATP Finals title match last month. But if De Minaur isn't in London at the Nitto ATP Finals in November 2020, you can almost guarantee – barring injury – the Aussie will once again be back in Milan playing with the best 21-and-under players.

In 2019, De Minaur only built on his breakout 2018, winning three ATP Tour titles in Sydney, Atlanta and Zhuhai. He ended the season at a career-high ATP Ranking of No. 18.
