Thiem Extends Winning Streak, But Has To Work Hard In Paris

Austrian star breaks once for third-round berth

Dominic Thiem extended his winning streak to six matches on Wednesday as he began his bid to capture the Rolex Paris Masters title.

The fifth-seeded Austrian, straight off lifting an ATP Tour-best fifth trophy this year at the Erste Bank Open (d. Schwartzman), battled hard to beat Milos Raonic 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-4 over two hours and 38 minutes.

Nitto ATP Finals qualifier Thiem, who has won two of his past three tournaments, withstood 54 winners — including 30 aces — from Raonic and goes on to face Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria in the third round on Thursday.

Thiem recovered from a 1/3 deficit with six straight points in the first-set tie-break, which ended with the 26-year-old forcing Raonic into a backhand error. Raonic saved three break points at 4-4 in the second set and later capitalised at the net with a backhand volley to level the scoreline.

Three forehand errors by Raonic at 4-4 in the deciding set handed Thiem his first service break. Minutes later, the Austrian finished with a forehand winner to close out his 46th match win of a career-best ATP Tour season, which will conclude with a season finale appearance at The O2 in London from 10-17 November.

Belgium’s David Goffin fell out of contention for a place at the Nitto ATP Finals when he lost 7-5, 6-3 to Dimitrov in 86 minutes. The pair contested the title match at the 2017 season finale in London. Dimitrov improved to 8-1 in his FedEx ATP Head2Head series against Goffin, who was 11th in the 2019 ATP Race To London.

During the past 52 weeks, when the match has gone to a decider, Thiem has found another gear to power himself to the finish line first. He has won an astonishing 14 of 16 deciding sets during this time.
Thiem’s recent form in deciding sets has been picture perfect. In his past four tournaments, he has taken two titles (China Open / Erste Bank Open) and has won all six matches he has played that have gone to a deciding third set. Those six matches:

What’s even more impressive is that Thiem dropped the opening set in five of those six encounters and came back to win the match. Thiem has won a career-high five titles in 2019, and has won a combined seven three-set matches in those events.
Earlier this season, Thiem captured the biggest title of his career in winning the Indian Wells ATP Masters 1000. He had to overcome Raonic in three sets (7-6(3), 6-7(3), 6-4) to win the semi-final and backed it up with a thrilling three-set victory (3-6, 6-3, 7-5) against Roger Federer in the BNP Paribas Open final.
Thiem’s form in this area has been up and down in the past few seasons. He was right at 87.5 per cent deciding sets won in 2016 (same as 2019 to date) and finished 11th last year in this specific category, winning 70 per cent.

A NEW, SINGLE-MINDED DOMINIC THIEM

Dominic Thiem has qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals for the fourth successive season. But, as Simon Cambers writes, this year the Austrian has come to The O2 with a new mindset, a new coach and a new confidence.

In a stand-out year, Dominic Thiem has beaten Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. The 26-year-old Austrian, who has qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals for the fourth straight year, has won five titles in 2019, with three on hard courts and a couple on clay, and also reached his second consecutive Roland Garros final.

On his three previous visits to Greenwich, the Austrian has won just one match each time, going out in the group stages on every occasion. But this time might just be different, thanks to a new mindset, a new coach and new confidence on hard courts.

It was in February that Thiem made perhaps the biggest decision of his career. After 15 years under the tutelage of fellow Austrian Gunter Bresnik, who had previously coached Boris Becker and Henri Leconte among many others, Thiem decided it was time for a change. In came a former Olympic champion, Nicolas Massu, a Chilean renowned for his fighting qualities, and the results were immediate.

Only three of Thiem’s 11 career titles, to that point, had come away from clay courts. But in March, on the hard courts of Indian Wells in California, he beat Federer in the final for his first ATP Masters 1000 title on any surface. It was just reward for the work he has been putting in for the past few years to be more aggressive, especially on returns. While on clay he can hang way behind the baseline to return, and with great success, he knew he had to be more attacking on hard courts.

“Indian Wells was just amazing because I came from a very tough period, I’d just split up with my coach, so everything came together,” Thiem has said. “I somehow freed myself and won the tournament, somehow. I didn’t know why that happened, that was amazing, my first ATP Masters 1000 title, I didn’t expect it.”

Bresnik’s rather eccentric training methods, which reportedly included having Thiem put weights around his waist and run home from the woods, were in stark contrast to his demeanour courtside, when he generally sat motionless, wearing his trademark white hat, which was at least one size too small. Massu, by contrast, is a jack in the box. Easy-going off the court, Massu, who won gold medals in singles and doubles at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, is up and down after almost every point, living every moment, and his energy seems to rub off on Thiem.

“It was lucky, not really planned, but it worked out very well from the first moment,” Thiem has said of their partnership. “He knows a lot about tennis so he can give me advice about anything. His favourite surface was clay but his biggest success came on the faster hard court so he can help me a lot with the transition there. He’s also not that old, he played against many guys I’m facing now, and he can give me really good advice for the opponents I face.”

That advice on how to do well on hard courts seems to have had an immediate effect. While Thiem had already been improving away from the clay in the past few years, under Massu he appears to understand what he needs to do. Thiem’s other hard-court titles this year came in Beijing and Vienna while he also won clay-court tournaments in Barcelona and Kitzbuhel.

Massu has spoken of his admiration for how Thiem can “quickly pick up on things”. “He has an incredible ability to learn something and immediately apply it during a match. He’s an amazing talent and extremely disciplined. Ask Dom to do something and he’ll do it – just better. It’s a privilege as a coach to work with a player of that calibre,” Massu said. “I see a lot in his game that resembles my own game and the way I played when I was on tour. He’s got fluid footwork; he’s always moving into position and manoeuvring the ball around the court to line up his best shots. We’ve got different personalities, of course. After all, he’s Austrian and I’m Chilean. But maybe that’s why we complement each other.”

As strong as an ox and with stamina to match, Thiem also has, in his one-handed backhand, one of the most recognisable shots on the ATP Tour. Softly-spoken off the court, and one of the nicest players around, on the court he is a brute, but able to hit with huge spin and angle as well as pure power. It is a brave man who hits his approach shot to the Thiem backhand or who drops the ball short and gives him time.

With the exception of Roland Garros, where he beat Djokovic and reached the final for the second successive year (losing again to Nadal), Thiem’s Grand Slam efforts in 2019 are the only blot on his copybook. At the Australian Open, he retired in the second round because of illness, at Wimbledon, he lost in the first round to former semi-finalist Sam Querrey and at the US Open, he was well below-par as he lost in the first round to Italy’s Thomas Fabbiano.

“He was a bit unlucky,” Massu said. “In Montreal, he got sick and then had to miss Cincinnati. At the US Open he arrived at probably 30 per cent, he wanted to play but he had no energy. So, to [recover] and win in Beijing was really impressive.”

Unlike in previous years, Thiem qualified for London early – it was his victory in Beijing, where he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final, that sealed his place in this elite eight-man event. In the past, Thiem has been guilty of overplaying; this year, Massu hoped to have Thiem fresher on arriving at the Nitto ATP Finals. “It’s important for me and him [to make the Nitto ATP Finals],” Massu said. “He qualified for the fourth time in a row. We are calm, because we [made] a goal and we achieved something, but we need to continue. Like every time we arrive to a tournament, we try to put everything into that week.”

After such a fine year, reaching the semi-finals would be an improvement on Thiem’s previous efforts at the Nitto ATP Finals. But don’t be surprised if, with his newfound mindset, he goes even further than that.

Thiem Once Believed 'It's Impossible To Qualify' For London

As Dominic Thiem worked his way onto the ATP Tour, he’d keep a close eye on the ATP Race To London at the end of each year. Even if he wasn’t in contention for a spot at the Nitto ATP Finals, he wanted to see how the battle for the final spots turned out, learning who the best players in the world that season were.
Now, not only does Thiem do more than keep an eye on the Race, he has become a consistent force, set to compete at The O2 for the fourth straight year.
“It’s an amazing achievement,” Thiem said. “I told myself, ’It’s impossible to qualify here. It’s so many points and you need to play such a great year.’ So for me it’s unreal that I qualified for the fourth time already. Also it was a great personal goal for myself in the beginning of the season to make it again to London and I made it, so I’m very proud of that and very excited.”

Thiem has won one match during round-robin play in each of his first three appearances at the season finale. But the Austrian has not yet battled his way to the semi-finals. That is one of the 26-year-old’s main goals this visit.
“Of course that’s my big goal. The first two years it was just so nice to be here even and last year I wanted to be in the semi-finals badly, but I didn’t play that well,” Thiem said. “I think I’m playing way better this year, but the level is so high, it’s the eight best guys of the season, so it can also happen that I play three very good matches and I lose three of them, so there is no guarantee for nothing, but I’ll try my best and hopefully I can make it to the semi-finals for the first time.”
The fifth seed feels that he is currently playing some of his best tennis. After losing in the first round of the US Open, where he admitted to suffering from illness, Thiem has caught fire. He won the China Open in Beijing — including wins over former World No. 1 Andy Murray, 2018 Paris champion Karen Khachanov and fellow London qualifier Stefanos Tsitsipas — and also triumphed at the Erste Bank Open, withstanding the pressure of competing at home in Vienna.

Thiem has also improved his performance against Top 10 opposition in 2019. Before this season, he had a 15-32 record against the elite group. This year, he is 6-3.
“After the US Open I made a big step into the right direction, especially with my game on the hard courts, on the faster surfaces. I come to the net more often. I improved my volleys, my serve and returns,” Thiem said. “I’m happy with that and as a result of that I had pretty good results in the late stages of the season.”
A major change Thiem made earlier in 2019 was switching up his coaching team. The Austrian star had long had Gunther Bresnik in his corner. But he spoke with Nicolas Massu during a January Davis Cup tie between Austria and Chile, then met with the former World No. 9 again in Buenos Aires in February. Their first official collaboration came at the BNP Paribas Open in March, which fittingly was the first ATP Masters 1000 title Thiem won.
“I think it was necessary to make a change. I had unbelievable success and an unbelievable road with my old coach. But there was a moment when I chose to need something new, to develop my personality, to develop my game on court,” Thiem said. “I was trying it out with Nico and the first tournament together we had was Indian Wells, so it was straightaway a good decision. And then I realised more and more that he’s bringing very good stuff to my game. He’s able to develop my game into the right direction and most important of all, there’s a great chemistry between us.
“He’s a great guy, [he has] very good character and I’m happy to be with him and I’m looking forward to some good times with him.”
Before Indian Wells, Thiem had only managed a 3-4 record to start his season. But since, he has won an ATP Tour-leading five titles, also a personal best. Now, he will look to make his mark in London,
“I had a pretty rough start to the season, but with the Indian Wells title I turned everything around and I’m very happy and excited,” Thiem said. “Since I was here the first time, it’s always one big personal goal in the beginning of the season, to qualify again for the [Nitto] ATP Finals. It’s a big achievement being among the top eight guys, so I’m a little bit proud of course and super happy that I’ve done it again and I can’t wait for everything to start.”

Dominic Thiem played with growing confidence throughout his 7-5, 7-5 victory over six-time former champion Roger Federer on Sunday night in Group Bjorn Borg play at the Nitto ATP Finals. Thiem extended his record to 5-2 over Federer in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series, including three wins this year.
Thiem got off to a fast start, Federer worked his way back from 0/40 to 30/40, but mis-hit a forehand wide to hand Thiem the first break for a 2-0 advantage. However, Thiem’s advantage was short-lived as two games later he was pressurized into striking a forehand wide. Thiem, enjoying a career-best season under the guidance of Nicolas Massu, made inroads again, happy to rally backhand-to-hand with Federer and bide his time. When Federer shanked a backhand wide at 5-5, 30/40, it was advantage Thiem.
Thiem played a waiting game in the second set, but when it came to the crunch at 5-5, he was quick to step up the court and hit three winners. Federer, pinned back on the baseline, could not pick up a forehand return off his shoelaces and moments later Thiem completed his 47th match win of the year.

Federer won the season finale crown in 2003-04 (Houston), 2006-07 (Shanghai) and 2010-11 (London). He has a record 57-15 match record at the tournament, which was first held in Tokyo in 1970.

Dominic Thiem miał przeciętny początek sezonu. Z siedmiu pierwszych meczów wygrał tylko trzy. Przełom nastąpił w marcu, kiedy zwyciężył w imprezie ATP Masters 1000 w Indian Wells. - Miałem trudny start roku, ale dzięki tytułowi w Indian Wells wszystko się odmieniło. Zakwalifikowałem się do ATP Finals, co zawsze jest moim celem na początku sezonu. Jestem wśród ośmiu najlepszych tenisistów na świecie. Austriak czwarty raz rok z rzędu wystąpi w Finałach ATP Tour. Nigdy jednak nie wyszedł z grupy. - To niesamowite osiągnięcie. Myślałem sobie: "Zdobycie awansu tutaj jest niemożliwe. Potrzeba tak wielu punktów i musisz grać dobrze przez cały rok". Dlatego to dla mnie nierealne, że zakwalifikowałem się czwarty raz z rzędu. W pierwszych dwóch występach po prostu miło tu być. W zeszłym roku chciałem awansować do półfinału, ale nie zagrałem zbyt dobrze.


Tenisista z Wiener-Neustadt ma nadzieję, że w tym roku zdoła awansować do półfinału. Trafił do Grupy Bjoerna Borga razem z Novakiem Djokoviciem, Rogerem Federerem i Matteo Berrettinim. - Myślę, że w tym roku gram lepiej, ale poziom będzie bardzo wysoki. Wystąpi tutaj ośmiu najlepszych tenisistów sezonu, więc może się zdarzyć tak, że rozegram trzy bardzo dobre mecze, lecz wszystkie przegram. Dlatego na nic nie ma gwarancji, ale postaram się dać z siebie wszystko i mam nadzieję, że po raz pierwszy awansuję do półfinału.

Szansy na lepszy niż poprzednie występ w Londynie Thiem upatruje we współpracy z nowym trenerem, Nicolasem Massu, pod wodzą którego rozwinął swoją grę. - Pierwszym moim turniejem z Nico był Indian Wells, więc od razu to była dobra decyzja. Potem zobaczyłem, ile on wnosi do mojej gry. Rozwija ją we właściwym kierunku. Na szybkich nawierzchniach częściej atakuję przy siatce, poprawiłem woleja, serwis i return - wymienił.

Inauguracyjny mecz w ATP Finals 2019 Thiem rozegra w niedzielę. O godz. 21:00 czasu polskiego zmierzy się z Federerem.
