Tiafoe On '18 Delray Beach Title: 'I Had No Expectations At All'

Entering the 2018 Delray Beach Open, Frances Tiafoe was No. 91 in the ATP Rankings. The American had made just one tour-level quarter-final, which came the previous week at the inaugural New York Open.

“I had no expectations at all,” Tiafoe said.

In the first round, Tiafoe faced Matthew Ebden, who defeated the American with the loss of just five games the month before. But the American hung tough after losing the second set against the Aussie to reach the second round in Delray Beach.

Next up was a daunting task: Tiafoe’s childhood idol and 2011 champion Juan Martin del Potro. The Argentine had won both of their previous FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings, including a straight-sets victory at the Australian Open just weeks before.

But Tiafoe summoned some of his best tennis, converting on his fourth match point to defeat Del Potro after two hours and 27 minutes in a three-set thriller. It was just his second victory against a Top 10 opponent.

“I was cool with the tournament after I beat Delpo, honestly. Could have lost in the next round and I really wouldn’t have cared,” Tiafoe said.

Perhaps more impressively, Tiafoe earned the respect of his idol, Del Potro. The ‘Tower of Tandil’ would go on to claim his first ATP Masters 1000 title at the BNP Paribas Open and climb to a career-best World No. 3 in August, so it took a lot for Tiafoe to beat him.

“Frances has everything to be in the top positions very soon. He has talent, the power to play long matches. [He has] the smart things to be playing in front of the top guys, also. I like to see him enjoying this sport,” Del Potro said on Monday. “I know he has a little bit of pressure on his back because the whole country is expecting too much of him. But he’s going to be a better player in a very short period because he’s already a good player for us and I would love to watch him playing finals and winning tournaments.”

“That was great,” Tiafoe said upon hearing of Del Potro’s encouraging words. “It’s still funny hitting with him and spending time with him. It’s good to see him back. He’s such a nice guy and anything he says, even saying hi to me, means a lot to me. I’m a huge fan.”

The tough part for Tiafoe was that, at that point, he was only in the quarter-finals. In the next two rounds, Tiafoe had to play then-reigning Next Gen ATP Finals champion Hyeon Chung and #NextGenATP Canadian Denis Shapovalov, both of whom were inside the World’s Top 50. What made it tougher was that due to rain on Friday evening, Tiafoe had to complete his quarter-final triumph against Chung on Saturday before returning later in the day to face Shapovalov.

“We were just taking it one step at a time and doing the best we could every day,” said Tiafoe’s coach, Zack Evenden. “We did a great job of that and it was a fairytale week.”

Tiafoe went on to beat German Peter Gojowczyk to lift his maiden ATP Tour title, becoming the youngest American to claim a tour-level trophy since a 19-year-old Andy Roddick at 2002 Houston. Tiafoe struck an ace down the T on championship point, then fell to his back in celebration.

“Complete relief, joy. That feeling, we’ve spoken about that a lot and that feeling, it’s going to be tough to replicate that. We didn’t expect it,” Evenden said. “We knew he was capable of big things, but him turning around the year that quick and in that fashion, beating the players he did that week, it was definitely overwhelming.”

“To win the event was pretty cool," Tiafoe said. "I’m happy to have my first title here in South Florida where I spend so much time. Hopefully I can do it again.”

While Tiafoe was just inside the Top 100 when he arrived at Delray Beach last year, his return this season is a different story. Not only did he qualify for the 2018 Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan, but he is at a career-high No. 29 in the ATP Rankings, fresh off his first Grand Slam quarter-final at the Australian Open. Tiafoe opens his title defence against Daniel Evans.

“I don’t feel any pressure this year, either. It’s kind of just another event I want to do well in. That’s where my head is right now. Obviously I gave myself a pretty good start [to the year], so there’s no real pressure,” Tiafoe said. “I’m just trying to get some momentum going for these next couple of weeks.”

Defending champion Frances Tiafoe of the U.S. was upset by Brit qualifier Daniel Evans 3-6, 7-6(1), 7-5. "It was difficult conditions. I was just fighting as hard as I could," Evans said.

Tiafoe was two points away from winning at 6-5, 30/30 in the second set, and led 4-1 in the third. “Very frustrating, very frustrating,” Tiafoe said. “I definitely shouldn't have lost tonight. I probably rushed on big points, instead of working the point a little more.”

Tiafoe survived an all-#NextGenATP duel with 19-year-old Miomir Kecmanovic, triumphing 7-6(6), 7-6(5) in two hours and four minutes. With momentum swinging between both sides of the court, the American overcame a break deficit in the first set to rally for the victory. He fired 45 winners in total.

The Maryland native limped to the finish line in the second set tie-break, after Kecmanovic recovered a break earlier in the set. Battling severe cramps in his left leg, Tiafoe looked to shorten points and he would seal the win with a drop shot-volley combo.

One year ago, the World No. 34 enjoyed his best result at an ATP Masters 1000 event, reaching the Round of 16 in Miami. There, he upset Kyle Edmund and Tomas Berdych. On Monday, Tiafoe will look to match that result when he faces Ferrer next.

Q: Who beat Spanish tennis legend David Ferrer in his final match at the Miami Open presented by Itau?

A: Frances Tiafoe.

The #NextGenATP American narrowed Ferrer's official tournament to-do list to only two on Monday night, beating the 36-year-old 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. Before Miami, Tiafoe had gone 1-4 since making the Australian Open quarter-finals in January.

“I'm starting to get my rhythm again. I'm starting to play better. I'm starting to feel a little more confident each match,” Tiafoe said.

He's into the fourth round in South Florida for the second consecutive year and will try to reach his first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final against 18th seed David Goffin, a 6-4, 6-4 winner against 14th seed Marco Cecchinato of Italy.

Tiafoe and Ferrer traded breaks early and looked like they were headed for a first-set tie-break. Tiafoe was in his chair, waiting for the 6-5 changeover when Ferrer's challenge was successful, making it deuce. Ferrer then broke and won the first set.

The 28th-seeded Tiafoe, however, came out locked in and broke Ferrer for a 3-0 lead. Two more breaks in the final set ended the Spaniard's 17-year tenure in Miami.

“I just tried to stay the course,” Tiafoe said. “Don't be a junior. Grow up. Keep going. I got off to a good start in the second and kept steamrolling.”

Ferrer reached the final in 2013 (l. to Murray) and the semi-finals in 2005-06. Ferrer plans to play two clay-court events – the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell and the Mutua Madrid Open – before retiring.

Goffin has been playing without much attention in Miami. He needed only 69 minutes to get past Cecchinato behind two breaks of serve.

The Belgian reached the 2016 Miami semi-finals before losing to Novak Djokovic. Goffin leads his FedEx ATP Head2Head series with Tiafoe 3-0.

Frances Tiafoe reached his first Grand Slam quarter-final to start the year in Australia, and on Tuesday in South Florida, he made his maiden ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final.

The 20-year-old American snapped a three-match losing streak in Masters 1000 Round of 16 contests and earned his first win against 18th seed David Goffin in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series (1-3) 7-5, 7-6(6) in a rain-delayed contest that tested both players' patience and concentration.

The match was delayed with Goffin serving at 4-4, 0/15 in the second set, and, after a lengthy delay, the Belgian faced three break points in the opening game. But he composed himself to erase all three.

In the tie-break, though, Tiafoe was the more steady and aggressive of the two as the American injected pace whenever the opportunity arose.

Save for the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Tiafoe's best tennis has come during the season's biggest events. The #NextGenATP American beat Kevin Anderson and Grigor Dimitrov en route to the Australian Open quarter-finals, and in Miami, the 28th seed beat #NextGenATP Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic and David Ferrer, the Spaniard's final Miami match, before facing Goffin.

#NextGenATP American Frances Tiafoe showed his grit on Thursday at the Millennium Estoril Open, coming from down a set and a break to defeat Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) and reach the quarter-finals at the clay-court ATP 250 tournament.

"I just kept digging, kept digging, stayed in the long rallies even though I don't like that. I'm very tired right now," Tiafoe said. "But those matches are big. You definitely need those."

The 2018 finalist won seven consecutive games from 1-3 down in the second set to seemingly take control of the match. But Nishioka showed his own will to win, getting back on serve and then breaking again when Tiafoe served for the match at 5-4 in the third set, saving two match points in the process.

"I came out and he wasn't missing a ball. It was a little windy, it was playing really slow and I couldn't hit through him," Tiafoe said. "I was trying to just stay the course, got in a good rhythm there for a while and served for it, messed up that game and then it got real complicated down 5/3 in the tie-break."

Tiafoe's aggressive play from the baseline was overwhelming in the key moments, though, and the eighth seed advanced after two hours and 25 minutes. Tiafoe will next face Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas, who defeated Italian Filippo Baldi 6-2, 7-5 in one hour and 28 minutes in a battle of lucky losers.

Amerykanin Frances Tiafoe w swoim pierwszym meczu na tegorocznym French Open zmagał się nie tylko z rywalem, ale i słabością własnego organizmu. Rozstawiony z numerem "32" tenisista dwukrotnie wymiotował podczas przegranego pojedynku z Serbem Filipem Krajinoviciem.

21-letni zawodnik z USA miał cel w drugiej tegorocznej imprezie wielkoszlemowej: przejść pierwszą rundę. W stolicy Francji na kortach ziemnych jeszcze nigdy mu się to nie udało. W 2015 roku oraz w latach 2017-18 przegrał mecz otwarcia. Trzy lata temu z kolei odpadł w kwalifikacjach.

Osłabiony

W poniedziałek Tiafoe był w stanie rozstrzygnąć dwa sety na swoją korzyść, ale przegrał z organizmem. Po meczu trwającym blisko trzy godziny zaznaczył, że źródłem jego kłopotów nie było zatrucie pokarmowe. Ćwierćfinalista styczniowego Australian Open zapewnił, że tuż przed spotkaniem czuł się dobrze. - Wymiotowanie podczas meczu nie jest czymś, co mi się normalnie zdarza...
