Ironman Thiem Saying “No” More Often

With better scheduling, and more rest, the Austrian star hopes to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals

Dominic Thiem is notorious for racking up the air miles to chase match wins, similar to another former hard-working globe-trotter Yevgeny Kafelnikov. But with a third straight qualification to the Nitto ATP Finals on the line, the Austrian has become wary of over-loading his tournament schedule.

Speaking ahead of the Rolex Shanghai Masters, Thiem admitted, “I [have] tried to play a little bit less tournaments… Especially at the end of the year, it's important to watch your schedule, not to do too much, not to run out of gas, because it's been a long and a very demanding season.”

Since the start of the 2016 ATP World Tour season to date, Thiem has contested 221 matches — 58-24 in 2016, 49-27 in 2017 and he is currently 48-15 this year — to maintain his place in the Top 10 of the ATP Rankings.

“It’s still pretty far away to London, but of course I hope that I will make it,” said Thiem, who qualified for the season finale at The O2 for the past two years. “Consistency is one of the most important things in tennis… It's really, really difficult to go deep in almost every tournament you play, and I think that's what makes the top four guys nowadays so special because they did it for [more than] 10 years.”

Having seen Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Juan Martin del Potro and Roger Federer all book their places at the Nitto ATP Finals, Thiem sits in the eighth and final automatic qualification spot with just four weeks left in the regular ATP World Tour season. Alexander Zverev is next in line to qualify with 4,410 points in the ATP Race To London, followed by Marin Cilic (3,815), Kevin Anderson (3,540) and Thiem (3,525).

W ubiegłych latach Dominic Thiem nierozważnie planował kalendarz startów i w końcówkach sezonu brakowało mu sił. Austriak wyciągnął wnioski z błędów z przeszłości w tym roku inaczej ułożył harmonogram występów.

- Sezon jest długi oraz wyczerpujący i zwłaszcza w końcówce ważne jest, aby pilnować swojego planu startów i grać mniej, by nie zabrakło paliwa w baku - mówił Dominic Thiem podczas konferencji prasowej w Szanghaju.
Do Shanghai Rolex Masters Austriak przystąpi po dwutygodniowej przerwie od tenisa. - Próbuję rozgrywać nieco mniej turniejów, aby zachować świeżość. Po US Open zagrałem w Petersburgu, bo lubię tam występować, oraz w Pucharze Davisa, ponieważ mogłem zaprezentować się w ojczyźnie. Zrezygnowałem natomiast z Pucharu Lavera, bo to byłoby zbyt wiele - wyjaśniał.

W Szanghaju Thiem nigdy nie dotarł dalej niż do II rundy. - Tutejsze korty są bardzo szybkie, jedne z najszybszych w rozgrywkach. A na takiej nawierzchni jeszcze większe znaczenie mają serwis i return. Nie zamierzam jednak wprowadzać korekt w swojej grze. Może poza nieco krótszym zamachem do uderzenia i próbowaniu, by pozostać jak najbliżej linii końcowej - ocenił.

Trudno jest dochodzić do decydujących faz każdego turnieju, dlatego tenisiści z "Wielkiej Czwórki", którzy robią to od wielu lat, są tak wyjątkowi. Pozostali gracze, w tym ja, wciąż mamy z tym trudności i zdarzają nam się wczesne porażki. I musimy to zmienić - stwierdził.

Rywalizację w Szanghaju Thiem rozpocznie meczem z Matthew Ebdenem. Z Australijczykiem zmierzy się we wtorek, a ten pojedynek został zaplanowany na korcie numer trzy jako trzeci w kolejności od godz. 7:00 czasu polskiego.

Thiem Leads Field Of London Hopefuls In Vienna

Tantalising first-round clashes plentiful at ATP World Tour 500-level event
You won’t have to wait long for thrilling action at the Erste Bank Open 500 in Vienna. Not only are eight members of the Top 15 in the ATP Rankings competing, but four first-round matches will be between players inside the Top 30 of the ATP Rankings. And perhaps more importantly, two of them involve players making a push to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals.

Top seed Dominic Thiem will face a stern test in his first match against the in-form Richard Gasquet. The Frenchman has beaten Thiem in both of their previous FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings — including in Vienna last year — and he has shown a high level of late.

Gasquet triumphed at the Libema Open and reached the semi-finals of the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships 2018 and this week's European Open in Antwerp. Thiem has a lot at stake, as he is battling for a spot at The O2 in London from 11-18 November. The Austrian, who will be competing in front of his home crowd, is currently in eighth place in the ATP Race To London. His best performance in Vienna came in 2013, when he reached the quarter-finals.

Thiem could face red-hot Kei Nishikori, the fifth seed, in the quarter-finals. The Japanese star, who is currently 10th in the Race, plays #NextGenATP American Frances Tiafoe in the first round.

The No. 2 seed at the ATP World Tour 500-level event is Kevin Anderson, who is seventh in the Race. The South African, who is trying to qualify for the season finale for the first time, opens against Nikoloz Basilashvili, who has captured two titles (Hamburg, Beijing) at this level this year.

In 2017, Anderson finished his season on a three-match losing streak, including a first-round loss in Vienna against World No. 81 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. The second seed will hope to change that this year, having made the quarter-finals at the Rolex Shanghai Masters and in Tokyo.

The winner of Anderson and Basilashvili could face former World No. 3 Milos Raonic, who plays Jurgen Melzer in what will be the Austrian's final singles event. Borna Coric, who made his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final in Shanghai, is in the same quarter of the draw. In the second round, Coric could play the defending champion, Lucas Pouille, who is trying to claim his sixth ATP World Tour title. The unseeded Frenchman kicks off his tournament against German veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Fourth seed John Isner, the No. 9 player in the Race, is also on the bottom half of the draw. The American opens against a qualifier, and could face Antwerp finalist Gael Monfils or compatriot Steve Johnson in the second round.

Thiem Off To Winning Start In Vienna

Dominic Thiem produced a confident performance in front of home fans at the Erste Bank Open 500, beating Ruben Bemelmans 7-5, 7-6(5) on Tuesday.

The top-seeded Austrian, who is yet to advance beyond the quarter-finals (2013) in Vienna, fired seven aces and saved all three break points he faced to advance after one hour and 45 minutes. Bemelmans, who also reached the last eight in 2013, was aiming to record his first Top 10 victory on his eighth attempt.

Thiem improves to 7-7 at the ATP World Tour 500-level event and will meet Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Sam Querrey for a place in the quarter-finals. In that second-round clash, the 25-year-old Thiem will be searching for a 50th tour-level victory this year (49-16).

Fabio Fognini joined Thiem in the second round after notching his third victory in four FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings against Damir Dzumhur. The seventh seed, who has captured three tour-level trophies this year, prevailed 6-4, 6-3 after 71 minutes to notch his 46th victory in 66 matches this season.

Fognini will meet Marton Fucsovics in the second round. The Hungarian rallied from a set down to defeat #NextGenATP Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime 1-6, 6-0, 7-5 on Monday.

Lucas Pouille is also through to the second round, keeping calm under pressure to defeat Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-4. The Frenchman earned his 25th tour-level victory of the season after two hours and 15 minutes, saving all nine break points he faced en route to victory.

Dominic Thiem continued his quest on Thursday to become the third Austrian in the 45-year history of the Erste Bank Open 500 to lift the trophy by beating big-serving American Sam Querrey 6-4, 6-4 for a place in the quarter-finals. It was his 50th match win of the 2018 season (50-16).

"It was a good match. I think I was returning quite well," Thiem said. "I still felt quite a lot of pressure on my own service games because he was serving really well and he has such a dangerous game. So I knew that if I got broken back once, that the match would be completely open again. So I'm very happy that I made it in two sets."

Top seed Thiem lost just four of his first-service points (26/30) in the 78-minute encounter, saving three break points at 3-2 in the second set. The 25-year-old contender for a third straight qualification at the Nitto ATP Finals, to be held at The O2 in London from 11-18 November, is hoping this week to follow in the footsteps of homegrown Vienna champions, Horst Skoff, who won the 1998 title, and 2009 and 2010 winner Jurgen Melzer, who retired from singles competition this week.

"Especially for us tennis players, we don't have many chances to play at home," Thiem said. "It's a very unique and nice feeling that are the people are behind me, so I enjoyed every second of it."

Thiem will next play fellow London contender Kei Nishikori, who earned two service breaks in each set to beat Russia’s Karen Khachanov, last week’s VTB Kremlin Cup titlist, 6-2, 6-2 in 64 minutes. The fifth-seeded Japanese star, who has a 38-17 match record in 2018, must reach the Vienna semi-finals in order to replace American John Isner in ninth place in the ATP Race To London. Nishikori qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals for three consecutive years in 2014-16.

"It's going to be very important. Still, I think for both of us, when we are on court the only thing we want is to win," Thiem said. "Kei and me, we've had some very nice matches in the past and I'm sure it's going to be a fun one tomorrow."

One London contender who was dealt a blow on Thursday was Isner. Frenchman Gael Monfils beat the ninth-placed player in the Race 6-4, 6-4 in 69 minutes. Isner is trying to qualify for the season finale for the first time.

Monfils has maintained the momentum he gained by reaching the final of the European Open last week in Antwerp. The 33-year-old is trying to lift multiple titles in a season for the first time. In the last eight, he will face Fernando Verdasco, whom he leads 3-2 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series. Verdasco has won their past two matches, including one at the recent China Open, where he triumphed in a third-set tie-break.

Spain’s Verdasco reached the Vienna quarter-finals for the first time since 2008 by beating eighth-seeded Briton Kyle Edmund 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in one hour and 56 minutes. Edmund lifted his first ATP World Tour title last week in Antwerp, where he beat Monfils for the championship.

Dominic Thiem reached the quarter-finals of the Rolex Paris Masters for the first time on Thursday, outlasting in-form Borna Coric 6-7(3), 6-2, 7-5 in two hours and 28 minutes.

"It was a great fight from both of us from the beginning to the end," Thiem said. "Borna is in great shape. He has his career-high right now, so I think I was beating one of the best players right now in the world. That makes me very happy."

The Austrian is trying to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals for the third consecutive year. If Kevin Anderson defeats Kei Nishikori in the final match of the day in Paris, Thiem will be guaranteed a spot at The O2 in London from 11-18 November.

Thiem is second on the ATP World Tour with 52 match wins in 2018, trailing just Alexander Zverev, who has 54 tour-level victories this year. The sixth seed trailed Coric by a break in the final set, but he was able to reduce his unforced errors to beat the Rolex Shanghai Masters finalist for the third time in four FedEx ATP Head2Head matches, which have all come at Masters 1000 events.

In the next round, Thiem will face Jack Sock, who kept his title defence hopes alive with a 6-0, 6-4 victory against lucky loser Malek Jaziri.

Sock, the 16th seed, claimed his maiden Masters 1000 title at Bercy last year, helping him earn a spot in singles at the Nitto ATP Finals. Sock has booked his spot at The O2 in London from 11-18 November in doubles this year, qualifying with Mike Bryan.

"It's always fun to play him. We've had some great matches in the past. Haven't played for a little while now, so I'm looking forward to that one," said Thiem, who leads the pair's FedEx ATP Head2Head series 2-1. "Of course I'm trying everything to stop him, but it's going to be tough, especially here in Bercy."

Thiem Continues London Push, Cruises Past Simon In Paris

Defending champion Sock to meet Jaziri in third round
Dominic Thiem boosted his chances of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals on Wednesday, beating Gilles Simon 6-4, 6-2 at the Rolex Paris Masters.

The World No. 8, winner of three tour-level trophies this season, required just 84 minutes to return to the third round in Paris, winning 77 per cent of first-serve points. This week, Thiem is bidding to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals for the third straight year. The 25-year-old currently occupies the eighth and final qualification spot for the elite eight-man event to be held at The O2 in London from 11-18 November.


"[Dominic] was patient and aggressive when he had windows of opportunity," said Simon. "Every time [we reached 30-30], he made the right decisions. So I couldn't play the match I wanted."

With his seventh straight win over Simon, Thiem improves to 8-2 in his FedEx ATP Head2Head series against the 33-year-old Frenchman. The 11-time tour-level titlist will meet Rolex Shanghai Masters finalist Borna Coric for a place in the quarter-finals.

Competing at a career-high No. 13 in the ATP Rankings, Coric defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-4 in 74 minutes. The 21-year-old, who will be appearing in the third round for the first time, improves to 4-1 in his FedEx ATP Head2Head series against the Tokyo titlist.


Defending champion Jack Sock improved his unbeaten FedEx ATP Head2Head record against 2007 semi-finalist Richard Gasquet to four matches, beating the home favourite 6-3, 6-3. The 26-year-old American claimed his 10th victory in 13 matches at the event after 77 minutes, saving all four break points he faced en route to victory.

"I didn't manage to get the upper hand in the match," said Gasquet. "I didn't manage to have the game that I wanted to have... I didn't manage to push as much as I should have. I didn't play well."

The World No. 23, who is defending 80 per cent of his ATP Rankings points this week (1,400/1,760), will next face Malek Jaziri in the third round. Lucky loser Jaziri defeated Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 7-6(5), 1-6, 6-3 after two hours and 24 minutes.

Bryan/Sock Reach Paris Quarter-finals
Competing for just the second time since capturing their second Grand Slam title as a team at the US Open, Mike Bryan and Jack Sock made swift progress to reach the quarter-finals in Paris. The American team was forced to work hard on serve, saving 14 of 16 break points en route to a 6-4, 6-3 win over Divij Sharan and Artem Sitak.

John Isner and Neal Skupski needed just 71 minutes to upset seventh seeds Henri Kontinen and John Peers 6-4, 7-5. The American-British duo saved each of the four break points it faced to book a quarter-final meeting with top seeds Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic or Rohan Bopanna and Edouard Roger-Vasselin. Bopanna and Roger-Vasselin beat Robin Haase and Matwe Middelkoop 7-6(3), 5-7, 10-5.

Marcel Granollers and Rajeev Ram also defeated seeded opposition, overcoming fifth seeds Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares 6-3, 6-3. The Spanish-American team dropped only one point behind its first serves (25/26) en route to a 63-minute triumph.

Swiss Indoors Basel titlists Dominic Inglot and Franko Skugor continued their strong run of form, defeating Ben McLachlan and Jan-Lennard Struff 6-3, 6-4. The British-Croatian tandem, which has lifted three tour-level trophies this year, will meet Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut for a place in the quarter-finals.

Aisam Ul-Haq Quereshi and Stefanos Tsitsipas set a second-round clash with Rolex Shanghai Masters champions Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo, beating Gregoire Barrere and Adrian Mannarino 7-6(7), 6-4.
