Wprawdzie goście przyjechali do Lille bez swojego lidera, Rafaela Nadala, ale i tak gospodarze woleli zachować spokój i pokorę. Choć wobec nieobecności Nadala, są zdecydowani faworytami półfinału.



I po pierwszym dniu wszystko przebiega po myśli Francuzów, którzy wygrali obie piątkowe gry. Premierowy punkt zdobył Benoit Paire. Debiutujący w reprezentacji 29-latek z Awinionu nie dał szans zmagającemu się z urazem przywodziciela Pablo Carreno. Paire zaserwował 16 asów, wykorzystał siedem z 12 piłek na przełamanie i zwyciężył 7:5, 6:1, 6:0 w 114 minut.
- Wygrywając mecz w debiucie w kadrze, spełniłem swoje marzenie. Czekałem na to długi czas - mówił zadowolony Paire. - W przeszłości nie miałem okazji, by grać dla Francji, ale nigdy nie jest za późno. Mam nadzieję, że będę miał jeszcze więcej szans - dodał.


Druga gra także padła Francuzów, ale Lucas Pouille musiał się mocno natrudzić, aby znaleźć sposób na Roberto Bautistę. Ostatecznie po trzech godzinach i 41 minutach Francuz wygrał 3:6, 7:6(5), 6:4, 2:6, 6:4. - Wiedziałem, że będę musiał narzucić mu własne warunki gry. Nie rozegrałem dobrego pojedynku, popełniałem błędy, ale pozostawałem twardy i wygrałem - powiedział reprezentant gospodarzy.

Nishikori will next face Frenchman Benoit Paire, who dismissed Chilean Nicolas Jarry 6-4, 7-6(1) to earn his 25th match win of 2018. While Nishikori leads the pair’s FedEx ATP Head2Head series 4-2, Paire surprised the home favourite in their only previous meeting in Tokyo three years ago.

Paire will be trying to reach his fourth quarter-final of the season, and his first since advancing to the last eight at the Open Sud de France in February. The 29-year-old is pursuing his fourth triumph against a Top 20 opponent in the ATP Rankings this year.

“He’s a very talented player. Great backhand, one of the best backhands on the tour and a good serve,” Nishikori said. “It’s never easy playing Benoit, so it’s going to be a tough one.”

The 29-year-old Frenchman dropped just two points behind his first serve (20/22) throughout the 71-minute contest. Paire will meet defending champion Gilles Simon in the quarter-finals.

Berdych will meet eighth seed Benoit Paire for a quarter-final spot. The Frenchman defeated Evgeny Donskoy of Russia 7-5, 6-3 in 73 minutes. Berdych leads Paire 3-0 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series.

"I am really happy to win at home in front of my family... It will be a tough match [against Berdych], but a lot of confidence because I am playing good and I feel good," said Paire.

"I enjoyed the match because I was fighting a lot... We both played well today," said Paire. "I will have to do the same against Goffin. It will be a complicated match and I will give everything."
