W meczu o finał Roland Garros 2018 Dominic Thiem pokonał 7:5, 7:6(10), 6:1 rewelacyjnego Marco Cecchinato, który przed startem turnieju zajmował 72. miejsce w rankingi ATP i nie miał w dorobku wygranego meczu w głównej drabince imprezy wielkoszlemowej. - Marco na mączce jest wspaniałym tenisistą. Nikt przez przypadek nie dochodzi do półfinału takiego turnieju - mówił na konferencji prasowej Austriak.

- Kluczowy dla przebiegu meczu był drugi set - kontynuował. - Po tym, jak go przegrał, poczuł trudy tego pojedynku oraz poprzednich, jakie tu rozegrał. Gdyby wygrał, na pewno do trzeciej partii przystąpiłby z pełną energią. Więc to, że wygrałem tę rozgrywkę, było dla mnie niezwykle ważne.

Dla Austriaka to pierwszy w karierze awans do finału turnieju wielkoszlemowego. - Nie uważam, że jest to dla mnie wielki przełom. Chodzi mi o to, że w dwóch poprzednich latach grałem tu w półfinale, więc teraz wykonałem krok dalej - wyjaśniał.

Thiem został drugim w historii austriackim finalistą wielkoszlemowym po Thomasie Musterze, który w 1995 roku zdobył tytuł w Rolandzie Garrosie. - Muster wysłał wiadomość do mojego fizjoterapeuty - przyznał 24-latek z Wiener-Neustadt. - Od czasu, kiedy rozegraliśmy mecz w Wiedniu, mamy szczególną relację. On jest wzorem dla każdego austriackiego tenisisty i największą postacią tenisa w naszym kraju.

Thiem Determined To Return To Grand Slam Final

Dominic Thiem had hoped for better in his Grand Slam final debut. Namely, he wanted to win.

But the Austrian, who fell to 11-time Roland Garros champion Rafael Nadal 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday, feels motivated to return to another Grand Slam final, and soon.

“It's really a great thing that I made my way and that I was competing in a final against him... But still I'm disappointed, of course. It was a final. I really wanted to win. I gave everything I had, and I'm the loser of today. So at the end, it's not the best day,” Thiem said.

“I'm confident that this was not my last Grand Slam final, and that's my biggest goal, to get into the next one and then to do it better than today.”

The 24-year-old right-hander broke through to his first final at Roland Garros after making the semi-finals the past two years. He was trying to become only the second Austrian – man or woman – to win a Grand Slam title. Thomas Muster won the 1995 Roland Garros crown.

Thiem also was attempting to become the first man to win his maiden Grand Slam final since Marin Cilic won the 2014 US Open.

“Of course it was a special thing for me to play [my] first Slam final. But on the other hand, I was pretty calm and I knew that I [should] go into it like it would be any other match. I think this was the right approach because if I let too much happen, my emotions, everything, because it's the first Grand Slam final, it wouldn't suit my game very well,” Thiem said.

The Austrian had beaten Nadal twice during the past two years, handing the Spaniard his only two clay-court losses during that stretch (50-2). Thiem won in Rome last year and in Madrid last month.

But the No. 1 player in the ATP Rankings has lost only twice, ever, at Roland Garros. The Spaniard improved to 86-2 in Paris by beating Thiem on Sunday. The Austrian, however, is already eager for another chance at the title.

“It's a big goal for me to play soon another Slam finals,” Thiem said. “Of course it's going to be easier then, a little bit, because it's not going to be the first time anymore. Then hopefully I can do it better than today.”

Wychodząc na kort, zachowywałem się tak, jakby był to jakikolwiek inny mecz. Tutejsze warunki są dla niego idealne. Kort jest podobny do tego w Monte Carlo, gdzie także gra wspaniale. Między linią końcową a bandami jest wiele miejsca i to jest dla niego bardzo korzystne. Dla mnie też, ale w meczach przeciwko pozostałym rywalom.

- Jestem rozczarowany. To był finał i chciałem wygrać. Dałem z siebie wszystko, co miałem, ale przegrałem, i dlatego nie jest to dla mnie dobry dzień - dodał 24-latek z Wiener-Neustadt.

Thiem zapowiedział również, że w przyszłości ponownie zagra o tytuł w Wielkim Szlemie. - Jestem przekonany, że to nie był mój ostatni finał wielkoszlemowy. I to jest mój wielki cel. Chcę zagrać w kolejnym finale. Spodziewam się, że będzie łatwiej, bo to nie będzie mój pierwszy raz. Mam nadzieję, że wtedy zaprezentuję się lepiej.

Za Dominikiem Thiemem znakomity sezon gry na ceglanej mączce, zwieńczonym przegranym z Rafaelem Nadalem finałem wielkoszlemowego Rolanda Garrosa. Teraz przed Austriakiem nowe wyzwania. W tym tygodniu w Halle zainauguruje występy na kortach trawiastych. - Po Rolandzie Garrosie miałem kilka dni wolnego i czuję się dobrze - mówił na konferencji prasowej.

Choć Austriak zaliczany jest do grona specjalistów od gry na kortach ziemnych, na trawie również dobrze się odnajduje. - Gra na trawie daje mi wiele radości. Oczywiście, na tej nawierzchni gra się inaczej i nie ma długich wymian, ale to mi się podoba. Nie czuję też tak dużej presji, jak podczas sezonu na mączce, więc pod względem mentalnym to dla mnie trochę łatwiejszy moment roku - wyjaśniał.

- Na trawie różnice są mniejsze - kontynuował. - W rozgrywkach jest kilka specjalistów od gry na tej nawierzchni oraz wielu tenisistów z potężnym serwisem, z którymi możesz przegrać we wczesnych rundach, ale uważam, że w ciągu ostatnich lat poprawiłem swoją grę na trawie. Zresztą przed dwoma laty w Stuttgarcie zdobyłem tytuł na tej nawierzchni.

Zmagania w Halle Thiem rozpocznie w poniedziałek. W I rundzie zmierzy się z Michaiłem Jużnym (początek nie wcześniej niż o godz. 17:30). - Chcę się dobrze zaprezentować i dojść daleko. Mam za sobą udane treningi i uważam, że jestem więcej niż gotowy na pierwszy mecz - dodał tenisista z Wiener-Neustadt.

Thiem: 'Everything Is Close On Grass'

Austrian begins grass season as No. 3 seed in Halle
After reaching his maiden Grand Slam final on his favourite surface at Roland Garros last week, Dominic Thiem is looking forward to the challenge of competing on grass ahead of next week's Gerry Weber Open.

Thiem, seeded No. 3 behind Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev, is making his fourth consecutive appearance at the ATP World Tour 500-level event, with his best performance coming in 2016 when he lost to eventual champion Florian Mayer in the semi-finals. The World No. 7, who faces Russia's Mikhail Youzhny in the first round, will be keen to improve his 0.542 FedEX ATP Win/Loss percentage on grass.


"I'm feeling good," said Thiem. "I had some days off after Paris and the grass season is always lots of fun for me. Obviously, [there are] not [as many] long rallies and it is a completely different game, but I enjoy it a lot. It is not that much pressure for me like [it is] on clay, so for the head it is a little bit easier."

But despite the lower levels of pressure, the 24-year-old is aware of the unique challenges presented by the grass-court season. "Everything is close on grass," said Thiem. "There are some specialists that you can face in the early rounds, some big servers or some guys who are playing very well on grass.

"I could also lose in the early rounds, so that makes it a bit tougher. But I think I improved a lot in the past [few] years. I even took a title in Stuttgart two years ago, so my goal is to do well and go deep in this tournament."


Thiem's 2016 triumph in Stuttgart may be his lone tour-level title on grass, but the Austrian made a significant breakthrough at Wimbledon last year, reaching the Round of 16 for the first time. Now, with added confidence after his runner-up finish in the French capital, the Austrian may just be ready to make his mark on the lawns.

"I had some good practices in Halle and today, in the afternoon, one more. I think I am more than ready for the first round," said Thiem.

Dominic Thiem, 2018's ATP World Tour match-wins leader, recovered well on Monday at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle to advance 7-6(5), 6-2 against Mikhail Youzhny of Russia.

Thiem led 5-3 in the opener and served for the set at 5-4, but the 24-year-old Austrian couldn't convert either of his two set points during the ninth game. But, in the tie-break, he won the final three points and played more freely in the second set.

“It was tricky. I started the match good actually because I was serving amazing. But from the baseline I had my problems,” Thiem said.

“But then from the tie-break on I also started to play better from the baseline and the second set was very good. In general, I’m really happy because he already had two matches here, he qualified, he’s a good player on this surface in general, and for me it was the first match in the season on this surface. So it was a good win.”

Thiem improved to 36-9 on the season. He was playing his first match since making his maiden Grand Slam final at Roland Garros (l. to Nadal). Eight of Thiem's 10 ATP World Tour titles have come on clay, but he does have a grass-court title to his name: 2016 MercedesCup in Stuttgart.

The third seed will next meet Japan's Yuichi Sugita, who beat German wild card Maximilian Marterer 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. Sugita won his maiden ATP World Tour title last year at the grass-court Turkish Airlines Open Antalya (d. Mannarino).

“His favourite surface is grass. So, it’s going to be very tough. He’s playing flat and returning well, and it’s tough for me against these players to hurt them on this surface because they don’t give you a lot... They make it really difficult for you to hurt them and that is what’s going to be tough against [him],” Thiem said.

In a battle of qualifiers, American Denis Kudla beat Slovakian Lukas Lacko 6-4, 6-4.
