Edmund Reaches Maiden Grand Slam Quarter-Final

Kyle Edmund reached his first Grand Slam quarter-final at the Australian Open after securing a gritty 6-7(4), 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Andreas Seppi on Sunday.

Edmund becomes the first British man other than Andy Murray, to reach the last eight at a Grand Slam since Tim Henman at the 2004 US Open. The World No. 49 won 80 per cent of points behind his first serve and hit 63 winners in the two-hour, 57-minute contest.

Edmund will meet either Grigor Dimitrov for a place in the semi-finals.

"He got off to a good start," said Edmund. "Tennis, sometimes you don't win every point and don't win all the games you want to. There was some problem-solving. I thought he actually came out very well and timed the ball well, dictating probably more points than I was. Was probably doing a little bit more reactive stuff. It was really good to turn it around, basically. I just stuck in there. Scoreboard pressure. Broke him at 6-5. After that, I really took control."

A tight first set went to a tie-break, after Edmund saved the only break points on offer to reach 4-4 earlier in the set. Serving at 4/5 in the tie-break, Edmund lost both of his service points as Seppi moved to within two sets of his first Grand Slam quarter-final.

Seppi, at No. 76 in the ATP Rankings, broke Edmund’s serve in the third game of the second set to grasp control of the match, but the Brit replied immediately with a break of his own before leveling the match on his second set point with a timely second break in the 12th game.

Edmund grew in confidence in the third set, hitting five aces and dropping just one point on his first serve. The only British man in the draw broke the Italian’s serve twice, both times to 15, to move to within a set of victory. And the early stages of the fourth set saw Edmund create break point opportunities at both 1-0 and 3-2, but he could not convert. Eventually the breakthrough came in the eighth game, which left Edmund serving for the match. The 23-year-old did not falter, sealing his place in a first Grand Slam quarter-final on his first match point, blasting an unreturned serve.

"It's great to be in the quarter-finals," Edmund added. "It's certainly my best result at a slam. You know, it's not easy to win four matches at a Grand Slam. I'm definitely pleased. Shows I'm improving. Also the hard work is paying off. Just that constant, working at everything in my game, on and off the court. It's good when you get results and it comes together... It's good to really get a good result here. I'm playing well, feeling good and I want to keep pushing on as well as I can, for sure."

Edmund Powers Into Maiden Slam Semi-Final

Is there any stopping of Kyle Edmund this Australian Open? The 23-year-old unseeded Brit won his fifth match in a row in Melbourne on Tuesday, upsetting third seed and 2017 semi-finalist Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to reach the Australian Open semi-finals.

Edmund, who before this fortnight had only reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam championship (2016 US Open), will now face Rafael Nadal or Marin Cilic for a spot in the Australian Open final.

Edmund became only the sixth British man to reach a Grand Slam semi-final in the Open Era (since April 1968) – Roger Taylor, John Lloyd, Greg Rusedski, Tim Henman and Andy Murray. “Amazing feeling, very happy... it was my first match on this court and it was very special,” Edmund said on Rod Laver Arena after the match.

Dimitrov entered the quarter-final as the favourite, but Edmund knocked out the two-time Grand Slam semi-finalist by playing more consistently and more powerfully. The gameplan was clear from the start: bludgeon his best shot – his forehand – against Dimitrov's one-handed backhand.

In the first set, they traded breaks but Edmund broke once more in the ninth game, tomahawking a forehand winner off a weak second serve and later served out the opener. The Brit won nearly 50 per cent of Dimitrov's second-serve points and hit 46 winners.

Dimitrov, who fell in the semi-final last year to Rafael Nadal, responded in the second set, riding an early break to even the match.

But the serving troubles that had hampered him earlier in the tournament crept back into his game in the third. Dimitrov had 15 double faults during his third-round match in Melbourne, and at 3-4 in the third set, he tossed in another double fault to give Edmund the break. Dimitrov finished with seven double faults, equalling his number of aces.

Edmund found his way to his maiden semi-final eight games later, breaking Dimitrov for the second time in the set after the Bulgarian started to look out of sorts, shanking forehands well off the court.

Dimitrov beat Edmund three weeks ago at the Brisbane International presented by Suncorp, with Edmund twisting his ankle at 4-4 in the deciding set. The pair also met in July 2017 at the Citi Open in Washington, D.C.

"Kyle deserves all the respect," said Dimitrov. "He deserved to win, simple as that. He's been working so hard the past months. I've seen that. I take full responsibility of my match today. There's no point for me to say what I did wrong, because I can sit here and talk about it, but it's all about him right now. He's the winner."

Kyle Edmund’s first serve has caught fire Down Under.

The 23-year-old Brit served 315 aces during 60 matches in 2017 to help power himself to a year-end ATP Ranking of No. 50. Solid numbers, but nothing like what he has done during his run to the semi-finals of the 2018 Australian Open.

Edmund has hit 78 aces through five matches in Melbourne – which is remarkably already 25 per cent of his season total from last year. Five of Edmund’s aces have come behind second serves.


Edmund is currently ranked 32nd on the Infosys ATP Stats Serve LEADERBOARD, which reflects good serving, but clearly shows he is not yet one of the serving greats on the ATP World Tour. Edmund’s 78 aces so far in Melbourne have him fifth highest for the tournament in that category, with his fastest serve being 205 km/h (127mph). That serve speed ties him for 42nd fastest for the tournament, so it’s clearly not pure heat that is fueling the ace count.

Edmund has been hitting his spots extremely well the past two weeks, with 68 per cent (53/78) of his aces being struck in the Deuce court, and 32 per cent (25/78) in the Ad court.

Edmund’s favourite location has been down the T in the Deuce court, where 40 per cent (31) of his aces have been hit.


What’s interesting is that while Edmund’s ace total has sharply risen, his double faults have not. Edmund averaged 1.9 aces per double fault in the 2017 season, but that has skyrocketed to 5.2 aces per double fault in Melbourne.

His first-serve percentage in 2017 was 58 per cent. He is at 63 per cent in Melbourne the past two weeks. His first-serve points won has risen from his 2017 average of 74 per cent, to 78 per cent at the Australian Open.

You would naturally think that Edmund’s second-serve performance would also be sharply higher, but it’s simply not the case. Edmund won 53 per cent of his second-serve points in 2017, and that’s only up one percentage point to 54 per cent in Melbourne.

Edmund plays Marin Cilic in the Australian Open semi-finals on Thursday evening. Cilic has pumped 96 aces so far, committing just 17 double faults. Expect aces to flow freely on Rod Laver Arena.

Briton reflects on semi-final run

Kyle Edmund reflected on an unforgettable 11 days at the Australian Open after his semi-final loss to Marin Cilic in his post-match press conference on Thursday.

The Briton went past the round of 16 at a Grand Slam event for the first time and recorded the biggest win of his career, beating World No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov, to reach the semi-finals. Asked about his overriding emotions immediately following his three-set loss to Cilic, Edmund pointed towards the newfound experience the deep run in Melbourne has given him.

“ disappointed I lost, but it's been a really good couple of weeks for me,” reflected Edmund. “I got the experience of going deep in a slam for the first time and all the stuff that comes with it. Playing a couple matches on Rod Laver Arena. obviously disappointed right now, but can be very happy with the way I've gone about things. played a lot of tough matches. Won some tough matches. Beat good players.”

The pride of reaching the last four in just his fourth appearance at Melbourne Park was clear to see, and Edmund was clear he had desires of making the latter stages of the sport’s biggest events more often moving forward.

“This type of tournament just gives you the bug to want more,” said Edmund. “Once you get a taste, it's like, yeah, I want more of this. I definitely go away from the whole week feeling positive.

“Making the semi-finals of a Grand Slam is definitely something that I can be very happy with and really take that forward with me and build from it. Take belief and confidence from it.”

With just one three-set win across five matches, Edmund was made to work hard for his place in the final four. The 23-year-old was pleased with his run, which marked the first time in his career he had won five consecutive matches, and the way he fought in the longer format of the sport.

“It's been so good,” said Edmund. “[Being at] one of the biggest tournaments of the world and making a good run and beating top players.

“I have also played some long matches. There's nothing better than winning best-of-five-set matches in tennis tournaments. It's a true test of quality and grit. It's a battle. It always feels better when you win these matches at the Grand Slams. It's a test of so many things like endurance, mental [and] physical. To be able to win five matches like I have done, it's really pleasing.”

Due to the absence of compatriot and five-time finalist Andy Murray, Edmund flew the British flag alone at the first Grand Slam event of the year. Subsequent success gave the British No. 2 an insight into the responsibilities he looks set to face in the future as he rises further up the ATP Rankings and further respect for the ATP World Tour’s top stars.

“The attention comes with the territory of doing well. That's what happens. If you embrace it, I think you cope with it better,” reflected Edmund.

“It's important to realize that I probably don't get as much now as a lot of other people will get, so you have to realize there's always someone else dealing with a lot more. The top guys like Roger (Federer) have been doing it their whole life. They crack on and embrace it. It's good to learn from them.”

With Edmund’s ATP Ranking moving inside the Top 30 for the first time in his career on Monday, the Briton, who expressed a strong belief in his abilities, set his sights on rising further up the ATP Rankings with more consistent results.

“I think for me, I know that the more consistently you can play at a high level, that's where you're going to get [a] top ranking and results. It's just putting it together more often,” said Edmund.

Edmund’s 2018 goals may need to be re-evaluated after a great run in Melbourne. The semi-finalist spoke of his aspirations to build on a strong start to 2018 after his ATP Ranking dropped by five places across the course of the 2017 ATP World Tour season.

“[The ranking] was a goal,” Edmund admitted. “Of course doing well in the bigger events, and I wanted to win a lot more closer matches.

“The start of the year has been really good for that. A lot of learning. Tennis doesn't stop. Next week is another tournament and the week after that. It's important to keep the ball rolling.”

After not playing in Britain's Davis Cup loss to Spain as he recovered from his heroics at the Australian Open, Edmund was scheduled to play for the first time since reaching the semi-finals in Melbourne.

But a throat infection saw him withdraw ahead of a scheduled first-round clash with Roberto Carballes Baena on Tuesday.
