Lucas Pouille is doing his best to enter the 2018 season with a surge of momentum at his back. A first ATP World Tour 500 final appearance will go a long way.
Pouille rallied past Kyle Edmund 6-7(7), 6-4, 6-3 in Saturday's first semi-final at the Erste Bank Open 500 in Vienna. The World No. 25 reached his sixth ATP World Tour final and fourth of the year. He will look to add a hard-court crown to victories on the clay of Budapest and grass of Stuttgart, when he faces either Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Philipp Kohlschreiber on Sunday.
It marks the second straight year a Frenchman will appear in the Vienna final, following Tsonga's runner-up finish to Andy Murray in 2016. Having dropped just one set en route to the championship, Pouille is in strong form in his quest to go one step further.

More aggressive from the baseline and striking his forehand with authority, Edmund had Pouille on defence often in the first set. He would earn the lone break points of the opener - six in total. While Pouille did well to turn them all aside and surge to a 4/0 lead in the ensuing tie-break, Edmund exhibited nerves of steel to claw back, striking a backhand winner down the line for 4-all. After denying a pair of set points, the 22 year old launched a forehand winner - his 11th of the set - to take the dramatic tie-break 9/7.
As clutch as Edmund was in the first set, a sloppy service game to open the second was all Pouille needed to seize the initiative. The Frenchman grabbed the quick break as momentum abruptly swung to his side of the court. Suddenly, he was the aggressor, forcing a decider and striking a forehand winner for the decisive break in the third set. Pouille advanced to the final after a gripping two hours and 17 minutes.
Pouille fired 36 winners, to Edmund's 26, and launched 13 aces in what was their third FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting. All three encounters have come this year, with the Frenchman also taking a Davis Cup quarter-final clash in straight sets.

With Tsonga contesting the second semi-final, it marked the first time in tournament history (since 1974) that a pair of Frenchman are featuring in the last four in the Austrian capital.
Pouille's day is not done just yet. The 23-year-old is also in the doubles semi-finals, teaming with Karen Khachanov against Rohan Bopanna and Pablo Cuevas to conclude play on Saturday.

Pouille Powers To Biggest Title In Vienna

Lucas Pouille soared to his biggest career crown at the Erste Bank Open 500, dominating countryman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-1, 6-4 on Sunday.
The Frenchman notched his first ATP World Tour 500-level trophy, earning a fourth title in his young career. With the victory, he became the first player in 2017 to win on all surfaces, adding a hard-court crown in Vienna to triumphs on the clay of Budapest and grass of Stuttgart.

Despite the loss, Tsonga stays in the hunt for one of the two remaining berths in the Emirates ATP Race To London. Bidding to make his fourth appearance at the season finale, he is just 295 points behind Pablo Carreno Busta for the eighth and final spot. All will be on the line at the final ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event of the year next week in Paris.
"I'm very happy with how the week ended," said Pouille. "All the work I've done has paid off... It's my first ATP World Tour 500 title. I played some great tennis and I was a bit emotional at the end. It's always great to finish the week with a victory.
"Jo has been playing for two weeks now and I knew he'd be a little tired. I had to be focused on every point. He made a few mistakes with the forehand and I found a way to win the match."

Pouille was off to the races from the first ball at the Wiener Stadthalle. After denying a break point in his second service game, the younger Frenchman was indefatigable from the baseline and consistently forced his compatriot into uncomfortable positions.
Tsonga looked to have escaped danger with two break points saved at 1-2 15/40, but a double fault would eventually hand Pouille the early advantage. After inducing the quick break of serve, the 23-year-old did not put a wrong foot and refused to allow a rattled Tsonga to find his rhythm.
Tsonga struggled behind his serve throughout the encounter, claiming just 32 per cent of points on his second delivery. A netted backhand would give Pouille the decisive break for 3-2 in the second set and a backhand return error would seal the victory on his first match point. The win gives the Le Mans native a taste of revenge after falling to Tsonga in the Marseille final in February.

Pouille emphatically fired 17 winners, including three aces, while seizing 72 per cent of total service points. The win bumps his total to 34 this year, equaling last year's career-high. It was a strong week for the World No. 25, who adds 500 Emirates ATP Rankings points and is projected to rise seven spots. He also takes home €438,505 in prize money.
For Tsonga, it marked just his first defeat in five ATP World Tour finals this year. A titlist in Rotterdam, Marseille, Lyon and Antwerp, the 32-year-old drops to a tour-leading 20-3 indoors in 2017. He was bidding to become the first Frenchman to win at least five singles titles in a single season since Guy Forget won six in 1991.
"Congrats to my good friend Lucas for his victory," said Tsonga. "I love this tournament for the support they give me, every time I come here in Vienna. All the moments I spend here are special."

Puj jako jedyny zawodnik w tym roku wygrał turnieje na 3 różnych nawierzchniach: twardej (Wiedeń), mączce (Budapeszt) i trawie (Stuttgart).
Skończyła się też seria 12 przegranych tie-breaków z rzędu przez Francuza (hehe).

Haase Upsets Zverev In Paris Second Round

Robin Haase has made a flying start to the Rolex Paris Masters. After dismissing Steve Johnson for the loss of just three games in the first round in the French capital, the Dutchman ousted fourth seed Alexander Zverev 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 on Wednesday to reach the third round.
The 30-year-old Haase, who reached his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 semi-final in the summer in Montreal (l. to Federer), overcame the 20-year-old Zverev in one hour and 33 minutes. The right-hander won 77 per cent of his service points and broke Zverev four times as he set up a clash with either Joao Sousa or Nitto ATP Finals contender Juan Martin del Potro.
Zverev will look to cap his standout season in style when he makes his debut at the Nitto ATP Finals in London, beginning 12 November. The German has won two Masters 1000 crowns this season, in Rome and Montreal, and also lifted trophies in Montpellier, Munich and Washington.
Ninth-seeded American John Isner battled hard to keep alive his slim chances of qualifying for next month’s season finale by hitting 29 aces in beating Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman 7-6(2), 6-7(11), 6-3 over two hours and 35 minutes. Isner could not convert match point opportunities on his serve at 6/5, 8/7 and 10/9 in the second set tie-break. Schwartzman ends the best season of his career with a 39-28 match record. Isner will now face sixth-seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, a first-time Nitto ATP Finals qualifier this year, or Richard Gasquet of France.
In action later on, Rafael Nadal will clinch the year-end No. 1 spot in the Emirates ATP Rankings with victory over Hyeon Chung, while London contenders Tsonga, Goffin, Anderson and del Potro are all in the hunt for crucial points.

If Lucas Pouille was nervous competing in a live Davis Cup fifth rubber for the first time, he certainly didn’t show it.
Pouille clinched France’s 10th Davis Cup title with a 6-3, 6-1, 6-0 victory over Belgium’s Steve Darcis in Lille, France, giving his country a 3-2 win in the tie.
"There are no words needed," Pouille said. "Just look at the atmosphere and the emotion... I'm just so proud of my team. We really wanted this trophy and finally we got it after 16 years. I'm very happy."
The Frenchman entered the match having lost his past two Davis Cup matches, including a one-hour, 59-minute defeat at the hands of David Goffin on Friday. His opponent, Darcis, had previously been 5-0 in live fifth rubbers, including clinching Belgium’s spot in the final this year as well as in 2015.
But the decisive rubber at Stade Pierre Mauroy was all Pouille from the beginning. The 23-year-old overwhelmed Darcis with power from the baseline that the veteran had no answer for.
Pouille won 79 per cent of his service points in the match, and never faced a break point. He broke Darcis seven times, closing out the triumph when a forehand from the Belgian sailed long.
"[I'm] just so emotional right now," Pouille said. "I'm very happy and to play in front of this crowd, my family and my friends, I'm feeling from another world."
The win capped another strong season for Pouille, who will finish inside the Top 20 of the Emirates ATP Rankings for the second year in a row. He was also the only player on the ATP World Tour to win titles on all three surfaces this season. The World No. 18 entered the tie on the heels of capturing his third title of the season in Vienna, after winning on clay (Budapest) and grass (Stuttgart) earlier in 2017.
It was the second year in a row that the Davis Cup Final came down to a live fifth rubber, with Argentina defeating Croatia 3-2 last year.
Goffin evened the tie for Belgium at 2-2 earlier on Sunday, beating France’s top-ranked player, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 7-6(5), 6-3, 6-2.
"I played my best tennis on Sunday," Goffin said. "It's always special to play the Davis Cup on Sunday. It's the best day with the crowd and the atmosphere on the court so it was something unbelievable to play my best tennis."
The Belgian put his country within one match of winning its first Davis Cup title.
Tsonga dominated the first set, cruising on serve while earning opportunities in almost all of Goffin’s service games. The Frenchman held six break points across three different games in the opening set, but the Belgian found his best tennis while under pressure, especially on his two-handed backhand wing.
And once Goffin sneaked out the first set in a tie-break, all the momentum was on his side. Tsonga's first-serve percentage dropped from 75 to 53 in the second set, allowing the Belgian to return more aggressively. That gave Goffin his first break point opportunities in the match, one of which he converted to claim a two-set lead.
Tsonga loosened up late in the third set once he was down two breaks, but it was too late. Goffin saved two break points at 4-1 and that was the last hurdle he would face ahead of the finish line, closing out his second win of the weekend with a serve that the Frenchman could not handle.
Goffin, who also helped his country to the Davis Cup Final in 2015, did not lose serve against Tsonga or in his first match of the tie against Lucas Pouille.
The last time that France had won the Davis Cup, in 2001 (d. Australia), the tie was also decided in a fifth rubber. The French took a 2-1 lead into Sunday's play before Lleyton Hewitt forced a decisive fifth rubber, which Nicolas Escude won to claim his country's ninth trophy in the event.

To świetny i doświadczony tenisista. Ale spodziewałem się, że w przeciwieństwie do piątkowego meczu z Goffinem będę miał większe szanse. Musiałem dobrze returnować i atakować forhendem. On starał się zwalniać grę, zagrywać slajsem, ale nie sprawiało mi to kłopotów - skomentował Francuz.


Choć tenisista z Grande-Synthe wygrał rozstrzygającą grę, nie czuje się bohaterem. - Wszyscy przyczyniliśmy się do tego zwycięstwa - ocenił. - Jestem bardzo dumny z całego zespołu. To dla mnie niezwykle emocjonalny moment. Bardzo chcieliśmy wygrać i udało nam się. Po 16 latach znów zdobyliśmy Puchar Davisa. Rzadko płaczę, ale tym razem nie wytrzymałem.

Noah zdobył tytuł w zaledwie drugim roku pracy z reprezentacją. - To był fantastyczny weekend. Belgowie postawili nam trudne warunki, ale daliśmy radę. Nasz zespół był zjednoczony. Marzyliśmy o tym sukcesie. Od początku uznawałem, że posiadamy silną drużynę. Co prawda nie mamy pięciu najlepszych tenisistów na świecie, ale mamy ośmiu-dziewięciu zdolnych do gry na najwyższym poziomie.


Finał zakończył się wynikiem 3:2 dla Francji. Prócz Pouille'a punkty zdobywali Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, który w piątek pokonał Darcisa, oraz Richard Gasquet i Pierre-Hugues Herbert, którzy wygrali sobotniego debla. - Punkty dali nam wszyscy uczestnicy finału. To piękne - dodał Noah.

Pouille Clinches Fifth Career Title

For the third time in 10 months, Lucas Pouille has saved match points en route to an ATP World Tour title. The 23-year-old overcame three-time champion Richard Gasquet 7-6(2), 6-4 at the Open Sud de France to win his fifth tour-level title on Sunday.

Pouille saved two match points at 1-6, 3-5 against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Saturday’s second semi-final before his compatriot was forced to retire with a left hamstring injury. The World No. 17 seized his opportunity in the final with a fine serving performance, scoring an impressive 87-minute win over Gasquet to lift his second title on home soil (Metz, 2016).

Pouille also saved one match point against Jan-Lennard Struff and two match points against Jiri Vesely in second-round matches en route to titles in Stuttgart and Budapest in 2017.

The opening set saw no breaks of serve with Gasquet, competing in his sixth consecutive Montpellier final, saving the only break points of the set at 3-3. Pouille took the initiative in the tie-break with aggressive play and secured the set with a powerful serve down the T which Gasquet could not retrieve.

Pouille’s confidence grew from that point, as he opened his shoulders with the comfort of a one-set cushion. The younger Frenchman opened up a 0-40 lead on his opponent’s serve and converted at the third time of asking when Gasquet misfired on his backhand wing.
The 23-year-old continued his dominant progress on serve, holding with relative ease to eventually stand with three championship points at 5-4 (40-0) but the World No. 33 showed why he has been so hard to beat in southern France, clawing his way back to deuce. But Pouille would not be denied, running around his backhand and driving a forehand down the line to clinch the title on his fourth match point.

Pouille will receive 250 ATP Rankings points and $89,435 in prize money and is projected to move up one place to No. 16 in the ATP Rankings.
