Fourth seed looks to better quarter-final result
Amid all the hype surrounding Novak Djokovic’s section of the draw being chock full of former champions at the BNP Paribas Open this week, fourth seed Kei Nishikori finds himself the man in waiting. The Japanese star turns his pursuit of a maiden ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title to the Californian desert and is seeded to meet whoever emerges from that heavy quarter.
Nishikori readily admits there are a mountain of obstacles to overcome before he would even turn his sights to that semi-final clash. And after mixed results on the Latin American clay leading in, he gave himself extra time to settle in ahead of the season’s first ATP Masters 1000 event.
“I’m feeling very good,” Nishikori, a quarter-finalist at last year’s event, said. “I had a lot of time after Rio so I was working really hard. I had a couple more days here to adjust to this surface.
“It was a big decision not to play Memphis but I think it was a good experience. The condition was a little bit tough in South America. I thought it was a good two weeks even though I lost first round and lost a final. I hope I can do well here and Miami now.”
Watch Full Match Replays
Nishikori believes he is gradually closing the gap on the Big Four’s dominance of the ATP Masters 1000 events. It is as much about mental inroads as technical.
“Those guys have a lot of experience,” he said. “They know how to raise their level in the match and we’ve got to fight for those tough moments.
“I’m working on a bit of everything. Tennis-wise I think my serve, strokes – I’ve still got to make some adjustments and mentally I have to be strong to win big tournaments like this.
“You usually have to play the tough guys second or third match and conditions are not that easy. These two tournaments are 1.5 weeks but you have to play tough opponents almost every day so you have to be really mentally and physically tough. To win the Masters you have to beat maybe Djokovic and Andy and some of those top 10 players.”
The fourth seed would likely meet sixth seed Marin Cilic in the quarter-finals with 14th seed Lucas Pouille his seeded round of 16 opponent. He will meet either Daniel Evans or Dustin Brown in his first match.

To Kei Nishikori, everything is just about perfect at the Miami Open presented by Itau, the season's second ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament, which kicks off on Wednesday.
The tournament's location, the Tennis Center at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne, is only a four-hour drive from where Nishikori lives and trains year-round, in Bradenton, Florida. The south Florida conditions – quick and fast – suit the aggressive Japanese player.
The only thing missing from making the Miami event perhaps Nishikori's absolute perfect tournament has been the lack of a title. The 27 year old is searching for his first Miami crown, which he'll try to land during the next two weeks.
“I feel very relaxed here, very open... I feel like I'm at home,” Nishikori said on Tuesday during his pre-tournament press conference.

Nishikori came close to his maiden Masters 1000 title in Miami last year, falling to Novak Djokovic in the final. It was Nishikori's second Masters 1000 title match (also 2014 Madrid). But the two weeks still served as a momentum-building tournament for Nishikori, who beat four Top 30 players, including Gael Monfils and Nick Kyrgios, en route to the final.
The Shimane native has rarely had a poor showing in south Florida. Of his seven prior appearances, he's advanced to at least the fourth round five times times, including a semi-final showing in 2014 (l. to Djokovic) and a quarter-final run in 2015 (l. to Isner). “I have good memories here,” Nishikori said.
The 5'10” right-hander kicked off the 2017 Masters 1000 calendar positively last week, reaching the quarter-finals at the BNP Paribas Open (l. to Sock). “I was playing great tennis. Unfortunately I lost in the quarter-finals but still I was playing good,” he said. “My tennis is getting much better, getting more solid.”
Nishikori is the second seed in Miami. He receives a first-round bye and will face Serbian qualifier Dusan Lajovic or former Top 10 player Kevin Anderson in the second round.

Nishikori: “I have great memories of the Mutua Madrid Open”
Spoiler:
He is a social networking phenomenon, a force of nature on court and a master of the clay. Kei Nishikori comes into this Mutua Madrid Open having earned the respect he deserves and, as a 2014 finalist, he is one of the players the Caja Mágica crowd admires the most. Excited about the prospect of a good week and building his confidence for the season, the Japanese player is warming up his engines before getting stuck into the competition.
“I love being in Spain!” admits Kei, “I think winning in Barcelona twice gave me a lot of confidence to play on clay. Here, with a little bit of altitude it’s a little bit easier for hitting ground strokes. The last couple of years I’ve been doing well on clay”, says 2014’s runner-up.
“Hopefully I’ll do well. I am motivated to do well this week, but I’m coming back from an injury and we’ll see how I can do for a couple of rounds”, he adds. “Winning the title would be great, but I know that I have a recent injury. I hope to get some confidence this week, have great matches during the next two weeks and be completely ready for the French Open”.
Is Nishikori a keen tourist? “I haven’t done much since I always have to go away fast. I haven’t had much time to see the city. I found some good Japanese restaurants in Madrid” responds Kei. “I feel welcome in the city. I also love Spanish food so I can’t complain”.
One of the biggest names on tour, Nishikori always attracts a throng of fans in training. “Whenever I’m in Spain I always feel the support. When we are on court the people always create a great atmosphere, I love playing here”.
“I have great memories of this tournament playing against David Ferrer. Whenever we play we have some good battles. Rafa is playing very good tennis this season and is the one to beat on clay”.
“I doubt about myself, I think the doubts are good in life. The people who don’t have doubts I think only two things: arrogance or not intelligence.”- Rafa Nadal
"There are other tournaments in which I would like to win. However, in the end, trophies are just pieces of metal. The main thing that I took from tennis is love. She will remain with me forever, and I am sincerely grateful for this “ - David Ferrer

Nishikori Looking For Matches & Confidence In Geneva
Spoiler:
Japanese star set to make his debut.
Kei Nishikori makes his debut this week at the Banque Eric Sturdza Geneva Open, looking for some much-needed confidence on the clay after a right wrist injury slowed his start on the European dirt.
The Japanese star was forced to withdraw from Barcelona, where he is a two-time former champion, due to the injury, and could not take the court against Novak Djokovic in the Madrid quarter-finals. His comeback in Rome was halted by Juan Martin del Potro in the third round.
So it is in search of matches and confidence that Nishikori competes as the second seed at this ATP World Tour 250 clay-court tournament, which is in its third year. Six of the Top 30 in the Emirates ATP Rankings are in contention, headlined by Swiss star and top seed Stan Wawrinka.

“It's great to have some matches here. Hopefully I can win the tournament. I think it's important to play well this week and get some confidence for next week. Hopefully I can win this tournament, but there's Stan and a couple of good guys, so it's going to be tough. Even if I don't win, I'll try to have a good couple of matches here and get ready for next week,” said Nishikori in his pre-tournament media on Sunday.
The 27-year-old Nishikori has enjoyed the majority of his success on hard courts, winning nine of his 11 ATP World Tour crowns on the cement. But the right-hander is coached by 1989 Roland Garros champion Michael Chang, together with Argentine Dante Bottini, and believes his clay-court game is ever improving under their tutelage.
“Clay suits my tennis. I can use many different shots," said Nishikori. "I used to really like clay when I was a junior, but when I turned pro I kind of knew how tough it was to play on clay with the top level guys. But now I have more confidence playing on clay and I think I can play really good on clay with my tennis. I really like to play on this surface now.
“[Chang] is giving me a lot of good tips on the clay court. Michael and Dante are helping me play on clay. For sure it's getting better. I think every year I have better results.”
Nishikori will open his Geneva campaign against Mikhail Kukushkin or a qualifier, following a first-round bye.
