Gasquet Captures Third Montpellier Title

Gasquet picks up his 13th ATP World Tour title
Richard Gasquet won the third all-French final at the Open Sud de France by beating Paul-Henri Mathieu 7-5, 6-4 on Sunday. It was Gasquet's third title from four straight finals at the ATP World Tour 250 indoor tournament.
Gasquet is now 13-12 in ATP World Tour finals, having last clinched a trophy in May 2015 at Estoril (d. Kyrgios). The 29 year old earned 250 Emirates ATP Rankings points and €82,450 in prize money.
"It was great for me to win another title," Gasquet told ATPWorldTour.com. "I am very proud to win my third title here, because it was a great match against a good friend. He had nothing to lose, so it was great to win."
Mathieu swept into a 3-0 lead at the start of the pair's eighth meeting, but Gasquet regrouped and recovered to 3-3. Mathieu saved two break points in a 12-point seventh game, then broke Gasquet to 30 to serve for the set at 5-4. But the 34 year old went onto win three of the next 18 points as the momentum moved into Gasquet's favour. The first set lasted 55 minutes.
Gasquet grew in confidence by breaking to Mathieu in the first game of the second set. He could have taken a 5-2 lead, but was later forced to save two break points in a 12-point eighth game. The World No. 10 went on to complete his fourth win of 2016 in one hour and 48 minutes.
Mathieu last beat Gasquet in February 2009 at Rotterdam. He is now 10-59 against opponents in the Top 10 of the Emirates ATP Rankings. He last beat an elite member, then No. 5-ranked Nikolay Davydenko, at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
It was his 10th ATP World Tour final (4-6 mark) and his first since reaching the title match at 2015 Kitzbuhel (l. to Kohlschreiber). The World No. 93 is now 5-3 on the season. He goes onto his next tournament with 150 points and €43,430.

At Last, Gasquet Makes Roland Garros QFs

Frenchman advances to final 8 in his 13th try
Home, sweet home, at last.
For the first time in 13 tries, Richard Gasquet has reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros, the Frenchman's home Grand Slam. The 29 year old upset fifth seed Kei Nishikori 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 on Sunday to reach the final eight in Paris.
“[It was a] great match for me to win [against] the No. 6 in the world on central court in Paris,” Gasquet said. “I took a lot of confidence after winning that [first] set. I played much better in the second set, and also with the crowd cheering for me, it was a great moment.”
Gasquet had lost in the fourth round at Roland Garros four times previously (2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015). The ninth seed also had never taken a set off of Nishikori on clay, having lost in straight sets to to the Japanese twice earlier this month (Madrid, Rome).
But Gasquet owned a 6-2 advantage in their overall FedEx ATP Head2Head rivalry. With the French crowd behind him and his picturesque one-handed backhand firing, Gasquet achieved personal history by playing more aggressive from the baseline.
“I knew if I want to win [against] this guy, I need to play very, very deep and very fast... If I'm playing short like I did in Rome and Madrid, I have no chance to win,” Gasquet said. “You also need to be able to whack the ball from the baseline, and that's what I tried to do.”
He fell behind 2-4 before a 50-minute rain delay. When play resumed, though, Gasquet took over, winning 10 of the next 12 games to gain a two-set lead. Nishikori rebounded in the third, breaking Gasquet to force a fourth set.
But the Frenchman, wearing the blue, white and red of the French flag, broke Nishikori twice in the fourth and held at love to advance. Gasquet will face second seed Andy Murray in the quarter-finals. The Scot leads their FedEx ATP Head2Head rivalry 7-3, including their past five meetings. “It's always important to have the crowd cheering for you, as they did it on the court, and I admit it made a big difference for me,” Gasquet said. “Of course it will be the same on Tuesday, but for sure I need to play a big match to win [against] Andy.”
Nishikori was trying to reach the final eight for the second consecutive year and match his best showing in Paris. Had he won, he would have become the second Japanese man to reach multiple quarter-finals at Roland Garros (Jiri Sato, 1931, 1933). “It was heavy [conditions], and I couldn't really dictate with my forehand or backhand,” Nishikori said. “I think he played good tennis... I have to give him credit.”

Q. That match looked a lot closer than the scoreline suggested. A lot of breakpoints.
RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, especially on grass court, if he is doing all these breakpoints, it can be another match. He had many in the second set.
As I said, it could be another the match. I think I played well. I saved all my breakpoints. I did mine all the time. Of course, it's a close match because he's playing very good from the baseline. He's a very dangerous player, has a good serve.
To win in three sets, it's a good match for me. I'm very happy with the way I played because I know he's a dangerous player.

Q. Are you hitting the ball a little bit harder than you used to?
RICHARD GASQUET: I try. I'm trying to. Of course, when I'm playing well, I'm doing it. Not every match, you know, but I think I am trying to serve better, trying to play more consistent, to go more to the net.
Sometimes it's working. But if I want to be in another level, I think I need to do it.
Q. What did you think of the time violation you received in the third set?
RICHARD GASQUET: I think he can tell me during the changeover, he can tell me, yeah, Be careful. He didn't tell me at all, so I didn't think at all.
I think, yeah, it's a little mistake. But that's the rule. Some chair umpires told me, Be careful, next time I will do it. But, yeah, this time he didn't tell me at all. I think that's why I was surprised.
Q. What are your thoughts on France hosting the Euros, and how closely are you following the French team?
RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, of course, it's very important for French player, for France. Of course, I think they have everything to be in semifinals. They will be the favorite.
But, of course, I'm follow them a lot. Every day, every time I can read something, yeah, I'm watching all matches. Of course, I think they can win the title this year. They are really close for me to win it.
Q. What do you make of Iceland and the threat to France in the next game?
RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, I think it will be tough. You know, every match is difficult. I think that's a tough match. They are favorite. France is a very good team. They play solid. Big talent. Of course for me, they will win. But they need to be careful because Iceland has nothing to lose. But for me, we have a good team.
Q. How often in a year do you think you would have to take antiinflammatories or something like that for pain before matches? A lot?
RICHARD GASQUET: You will be surprised, yeah, so I prefer not to tell (smiling). A lot.
Q. Is this something a lot of players would have to do?
RICHARD GASQUET: I don't know with other players. But I do, yeah. Not during practice, but before matches.
Q. I imagine it's not something you want to do.
RICHARD GASQUET: No, of course. Sometimes I have no choice. I am working a lot to be healthy. Every day I'm working, working to have no pain, but sometime it happen. It's nothing crazy to take antiinflammatories. I imagine all the players are doing it.
But, yeah, in other sports, I know a lot of football players, they do it a lot, too.
Q. I notice you use your own white towel instead of the Wimbledon towel. What is the reason?
RICHARD GASQUET: Because I'm sweating a lot. With the white towel, it's more dry. It may be stupid, but I do it.
Q. How do you like how the Wimbledon towels look and what do they mean to your family and friends? Are they asking you for them?
RICHARD GASQUET: Of course, everybody is asking me the towel. That's why I took it after the match. I have two towels, I take in the bag to give to my family. Every player are doing the same.
Q. What do you think of the Wimbledon towel?
RICHARD GASQUET: Very nice. An incredible towel. When I stop tennis, I will be very happy to have these towels. That's why I take it.
Q. What's your record for regripping your racquet? How fast can you do it?
RICHARD GASQUET: Of course, I'm the fastest to do it. I'm sure about it. I didn't win a Grand Slam, but to do that I'm the best (laughter). Sure about it.

Q. How good does it feel to get tough win today?
RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, it's a Grand Slam match. You know, it can be always difficult, especially with the conditions. It's a different tennis sometimes because of sliding so much. It's grass court, so sometimes it's not only tennis, you know, so you need to concentrate a lot. I start well, but I did a bad end of the first set. Yeah, he played well so I had to fight. I did the second set. I took a lot of confidence after that, and I'm happy to win because I think it was a tough match.
Q. During the match a little rain started. Does it bother you?
RICHARD GASQUET: We know, you know, in Wimbledon you can stop. Even if it's raining just a little bit it's impossible to play.
It happen a lot of times to me last few years, so I know what to expect here in Wimbledon. It's okay.
Q. I think your condition is the best, and you're a very experienced player. When you have like tough year or tough time in terms of maximize your resources, what do you do to overcome like slump?
RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, right, it's normal to have tough times. It happens in a career. You have many injuries sometimes. In my career I had some serious injuries.
Of course it's always difficult to come back. But, you know, we are professional tennis player. We need to come back to try the best to recover. And of course sometimes you play bad, you play good if you are injured.
I still enjoy to play tennis. That's most important for me. I feel motivated 100% of mental. So that's why I'm coming back.
Q. Also, do you look to psychologist to try and help?
RICHARD GASQUET: No, not too much. Talk a lot with my coach. Not so much.
Q. Mid Sunday, what are you going to do?
RICHARD GASQUET: I hope to be there. I'm playing Saturday, so if I'm winning I will practice. We see. I hope to win on Saturday, to stay here on Sunday. We will see.

Gasquet Wins Inaugural Antwerp Title

Frenchman claims 14th ATP World Tour title
Richard Gasquet captured the title at the European Open on Sunday, fighting past Diego Schwartzman 7-6(4), 6-1.
Gasquet notched his 14th ATP World Tour title and second of the year, having previously lifted the trophy in Montpellier in February. He needed one hour and 29 minutes to emerge victorious, saving one of two break points faced, while converting three of six of his own. The Frenchman was ruthless on his first serve, claiming 29 of 33 (88 per cent) of such points.
Both players looked to blast through the indoor hard court at the Lotto Arena, unloading from the back of the court. Two scintillating backhand winners by Schwartzman punctuated the start of the match, as the Argentine sought to maintain his momentum after saving two match points over top seed David Goffin in Saturday's semis.
Schwartzman may be short in stature, but his diminutive height is not proportional to his heart. After falling behind an early break, the 24 year old dug in his heels when staring down three set points at 5-4 40/0. He would save them all, reeling off seven consecutive points to break back and consolidate for 6-5. Schwartzman would force a tie-break, where Gasquet's would not be denied a second opportunity to close out the opener.
"It was a tough match, especially in the first set when I was leading 5-4 40/0 on my serve," said Gasquet. "It was important for me to win the tie-break and I took a lot of confidence into the second set. It was a great match for me and I was the favourite to win, so it's important for me.
"I'm very happy with the week. All the matches were tough and there were a lot of great players here. It's always nice to have a title."
As the match wore on, the Frenchman's experience proved to be a critical factor. Gasquet launched his one-handed backhand with a bevy of topspin to drive the Argentine behind the baseline, and he would drop just one game in the second set to pull away for the title.
Schwartzman was bidding for his second ATP World Tour title in his second final. He captured his maiden title on the clay of Istanbul (d. Dimitrov) earlier this year. He takes home €53,085 and 150 Emirates ATP Rankings points.
"I am happy because the week was really good for me," said Schwartzman. "I played a great first set and fought back. The tie-break was really close. Richard improved a lot in the second set and played really well.
"It's my second final of the year and my first on indoor hard courts. I've improved a lot. It's really nice for me. I stayed focused."
