Kliżko pozbył się punktów za zeszłoroczny Petersburg, wskutek czego dzisiaj jest notowany poza pierwszą "100". Rok temu, po obciążającym fizycznie biegu po dziewiczy tytuł w Rosji, Robpal narzekał, że wszyscy się czepiają do Rafy, a Kliżan w Piotrogrodzie grał równie długie i zacięte mecze dzień po dniu, a w jego temacie cisza.

KLIZAN FIGHTS BACK TO LIFT MUNICH CROWN

Martin Klizan battled hard on Sunday to capture his second ATP World Tour title with the 50th match win of his career.

World No. 111 Klizan broke a three-match losing streak against No. 15-ranked Fabio Fognini in a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory in the BMW Open by FWU AG final, which lasted 89 minutes. Afterwards, tournament organisers presented him with a white BMW 420d Convertible car.

Klizan received treatment at 1-4 in the first set against the player he had beaten for his first trophy in October 2012 at St. Petersburg.

“I had problems with my stomach throughout last night,” Klizan told ATPWorldTour.com. “I think I slept only 30 minutes and I am now very tired. I was down after losing the first set, but I just wanted to keep fighting."

He is the first qualifier to lift an ATP World Tour trophy since June 2013, when Nicolas Mahut won at the Topshelf Open in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, and the first player outside of the Top 100 in the Emirates ATP Rankings to clinch silverware since No. 155 Ivo Karlovic at Bogota last year.

“To come through qualifying - playing eight matches in nine days - is tough. It is difficult to be fit every day," added Klizan. "I beat many good players, from [Mikhail] Youzhny to Tommy [Haas]. I am very proud of myself that it ended happily.”

Klizan received €77,315 in prize money and earned 250 Emirates ATP Ranking points for winning the ATP World Tour clay-court tournament, while Fognini heads to the Mutua Madrid Open with $40,720 and 150 points.

Fognini drops to a 26-9 match record on the season, which includes his third ATP World Tour title at the Royal Guard Open Chile at Vina del Mar (d. L. Mayer).

“It was a great week to have reached a final,” said Fognini. “Tomorrow is another day. There are two big tournaments coming up now. I will keep working hard to try and break into the Top 10 [of the Emirates ATP Rankings]. I have done well this year.”

Klizan Stuns Nadal To Set Berdych SF Clash

It has been a week of improbable comebacks for Martin Klizan, who stunned World No. 2 Rafael Nadal 6-7(7), 6-4, 6-3 on Friday evening in the China Open quarter-finals.

Six days ago, even competing in the main draw of this ATP World Tour 500 hard-court tournament seemed a distant dream for Klizan as he trailed World No. 927 Xin Gao 6-4, 5-1 in the first round of the qualifying event. To finish off Nadal, the 25-year-old Klizan won 16 of the last 18 points, having trailed by a service break in both the second and third sets.

It was a match full of twists and turns that ultimately saw Nadal lose to a qualifier for the first time in 10 years. The Mallorcan was 77-1 against qualifiers coming into the contest, with his only defeat recorded against Julien Benneteau in Lyon in 2004. Nadal was playing his first tournament in nearly 13 weeks, having been sidelined all summer with a right wrist injury.

Klizan served for the first set at 5-4, but was thwarted by Nadal, who fought back to take the opener in the tie-break. The Spaniard looked to have assumed control of the match as he broke for a 2-1 lead in the second set, but Klizan drew level at 4-4 and his relentless attack was rewarded with a decisive service break in the 10th game.

After saving a break point in the second game of the decider, Nadal broke Klizan for a 3-2 lead. But an astonishing passage of play from the Slovakian saw him win the final four games and clinch victory in two hours and 37 minutes.

Klizan recorded his third Top 10 win in nine attempts, with his other victories coming over No. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the 2012 US Open and No. 10 Kei Nishikori in the first round at Roland Garros this year.

Klizan Captures Casablanca Crown

Martin Klizan captured his third ATP World Tour title on Sunday at the Grand Prix Hassan II.

Second seed Klizan defeated Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-2, 6-2 in the Casablanca final.

Klizan, who also captured trophies at the 2012 St. Petersburg Open and the 2014 BMW Open by FWU AG in Munich (d. Fognini both times), received €80,000 in prize money and earned 250 Emirates ATP Rankings points.

"It's an amazing feeling right now," said Klizan. "Every time I am in Morocco, I have played a lot on Centre Court and seen the list of all the names. I wished to be a champion and today I am. I am very proud and excited now. The crowd was unbelievable, they always support me.

“I would like to dedicate the trophy to my grandfather, who passed away last week, and also to those who died in an autobus crash in southern Morocco [on Friday].”

Gimeno-Traver, clearly nervous in his first ATP World Tour final, was broken to 30 in the opening game. Klizan saved four break points in a 13-point fourth game en route to a 5-1 lead.

Klizan’s dominance continued when he broke Gimeno-Traver to 30 in the third game of the second set. After another 13-point game, which saw Klizan take a 5-2 lead, the Slovak was forced to save three break points before he closed out the victory.

"Today, was a difficult match for me," said Gimeno-Traver. "I played a long match yesterday and I didn't feel very well today. Martin played a great match and deserved to win."

Klizan saved all seven break points in the 76-minute final. He has also beaten Gimeno-Traver 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 in the Ecuador Open Quito second round in February.

Prior to this week, Gimeno-Traver had not won a match in Casablanca on his two previous appearances in 2011 (l. to Hanescu) and 2013 (l. to Garcia-Lopez). He beat seventh seed Mikhail Kukushkin in the second round and third seed Jiri Vesely in the semi-finals. He earned €42,100 and 150 points.

"I will always remember this week and I'm very happy that I reached my first final here," said Gimeno-Traver.
