The No. 42 player in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings defeated fifth seed Roman Safiullin 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 41 minutes to reach the second round at the Los Cabos ATP 250. It was the 33-year-old’s second win of the season.
“It’s very tough to win in all of the tournaments on the Tour, so any win is good,” Evans said. “To get another chance to play here is great and hopefully I can play a few more matches.”
According to Infosys ATP Stats, Evans won 52 per cent of his return points to put consistent pressure on his opponent’s serve. In the second set he converted all three of his break points to move on.
“He started to play a little better. Balls got a lot older, so it was tougher to serve and play my game,” Evans said. “I had to hang in there, played some good tennis at the end to get through that last game.”

Despite winning just 11 of 39 points in the first set, Evans quickly rebounded to earn his first win against the Italian in four attempts.
The Briton produced sharp precision on his groundstrokes and often worked his way forward, winning 20 of 29 net points, according to Infosys ATP Stats.
“I just changed how I played a little bit. It’s a funny game if you hang around,” Evans said. “It’s a funny score in tennis and you always have a chance if you hang in the second set.”
Evans ended his four-match skid at the ATP Masters 1000 event, where he had not won a match since 2019. Now 2-5 at the hard-court tournament, the 33-year-old will next meet Christopher Eubanks.

Wawrinka will make his debut at the clay-court event against Albert Ramos-Vinolas. The 39-year-old’s only tour-level win this season came on clay in Buenos Aires.
Top seed Djere reached the semi-finals in Marrakech in 2022. Third seed Evans has earned wins in Adelaide, Los Cabos and Miami this year and will look to rediscover his best form at an event where he reached the semis in 2023.
