Puchar Lavera jest rozgrywany na cześć Roda Lavera, który jako jedyny człowiek dwukrotnie wywalczył Klasycznego Wielkiego Szlema. Australijczyk uczynił to w erze tenisa amatorskiego (1962) i zawodowego (1969). Dotychczasowe spotkania pomiędzy ekipami Europy i Reszty Świata (w Pradze, Chicago i Genewie) kończyły się zwycięstwem tenisistów ze Starego Kontynentu.

Without proper consultation with other stakeholders in the game, the FFT announced that what is normally the season’s second grand slam tournament and was scheduled to run from 24 May to 7 June – less than a month after the conclusion of the blackout introduced by the ATP last week – would now become the fourth and final major, starting on 20 September.

That is just a week after the US Open finishes and clashes with the Laver Cup, the popular and established exhibition team competition, featuring leading players from Europe and the rest of the world, and championed by Roger Federer and Nadal.

Federer, the world No 4, who is recuperating from minor knee surgery and not due to resume playing until Wimbledon in July, has moved away from clay in recent years and would in any case be reluctant to sacrifice his involvement in the Laver Cup, which is slated for 25 to 27 September in Boston.

The clash places Nadal, the French Open’s reigning and perennial master, in a more obviously embarrassing position. He too is a key figure in the Laver Cup’s Team Europe, along with Alexander Zverev – a client of Federer’s promotional company who chose to miss the ATP Cup in January to play exhibitions with the Swiss – Dominic Thiem and Stefanos Tsitsipas. But it is the Spaniard who is the king of Roland Garros. Without Nadal, the French Open is seriously diminished.

Event to be held at TD Garden in Boston from 24-26 September 2021

Event organisers today announced that the Laver Cup will not be held in 2020, but will return to Boston in 2021, a move prompted by changes to the international tennis calendar which created a scheduling conflict with other major international tennis events.

The fourth edition of the Laver Cup will now be held at TD Garden in Boston from 24-26 September 2021.

Since the French Open’s 17 March rescheduling announcement, Laver Cup organisers have been closely monitoring the situation with their partners – Tennis Australia and the USTA – as well as the ATP. Ultimately though, the international tennis schedule precluded the ability of the organisers to stage the event and therefore there was no reason to delay the inevitable decision.

“We needed to make a decision now on our event,” Laver Cup Chairman and CEO of TEAM8 Tony Godsick said. “We know our passionate fans will be disappointed that they have to wait an extra year for the Laver Cup in Boston, but this is the responsible course of action, necessitated by the emerging calendar conflicts.”

“We wanted to call it now to provide certainty for our fans as well as our players, sponsors, broadcasters, partners, staff, volunteers and of course the great city of Boston. We thank them all for their unwavering dedication, hard work, support and understanding and we can’t wait to bring happier times to Boston in 2021.”

“Most importantly, all of our thoughts are with the massive number of people around the world impacted by COVID-19 and the incredible selfless people working on the front line keeping many of us safe.”

“We created the Laver Cup to celebrate the greats of the game - past, present and future - and to grow the game of tennis,” Godsick continued. “The Laver Cup is only at the start of a long and incredible journey which will continue next year.”

“It’s unfortunate that the Laver Cup has to be pushed back a year, but at this stage it’s the right thing to do for everyone concerned,” 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer explained.

“Although disappointing, the good news is that TD Garden will still be able to host the event next year and I really look forward to finally playing in Boston for the first time at Laver Cup 2021.”

Laver Cup CEO, Steve Zacks reiterated: “After careful consideration we all agreed that in order to provide the Laver Cup experience that everyone has come to love and expect, moving the event to September 2021 was the only option.”

Amy Latimer, President of TD Garden commented, “While obviously disappointed that given the circumstances we have to wait another year until world class tennis comes to TD Garden, we are pleased that we will be able to host the Laver Cup in 2021 and deliver the event that the Boston community was so looking forward to. We will be working closely with the Laver Cup team to ensure the event exceeds expectations.”

Fans who purchased tickets and/or hospitality packages for this year’s event can either keep their tickets (which will remain valid for the Laver Cup 2021 event) or receive a full refund. All ticketholders will be contacted in the near future with details of this process. Further 2021 event updates including ticket on sale information will soon be provided on LaverCup.com.

Laver Cup: Where Team Europe Meets Team World

Named after two-time Calendar Grand Slam winner Rod Laver, the Laver Cup pits Team Europe against Team World across three days of competition.

The fourth edition of the exciting team tournament was due to be held this week at TD Garden in Boston but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event has been rescheduled for 24-26 September 2021.

ATPTour.com looks at five things to know about the event.

A Thrilling Format
Each team consists of six players, with the top three available players from each region, according to the FedEx ATP Rankings, joining three Team Captain picks. Team Europe and Team World are led by Sweden’s Bjorn Borg and the United States’ John McEnroe, respectively.

The competition takes place across three days, with each day consisting of three singles matches and one doubles encounter. Each match win is worth one point on Friday, two points on Saturday and three points on Sunday. The first team to 13 points wins the Laver Cup. In the event of a 12-12 tie at the end of the final day, the tournament will be decided by a one-set deciding doubles clash.


Federer, Nadal Lead Team Europe To Victory
At the inaugural Laver Cup in Prague, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal guided Team Europe to a 15-9 win. On Day Two of the event, both Federer and Nadal won singles matches before returning to the court to compete as a doubles team for the first time.

The pair made a seamless transition from rivals to teammates in the Czech capital, overcoming Sam Querrey and Jack Sock 6-4, 1-6, 10-5. The victory earned Team Europe a commanding 9-3 advantage heading into the final day of action.

“I am very happy with how we played,” said Federer. “It was so much fun. The preparation with Rafa, going through the motions, talking tactics, talking about which side to play on, all these things are very special. I am very happy that the one match we did play so far we did win.”

<a href='/en/players/roger-federer/f324/overview'>Roger Federer</a> and <a href='/en/players/rafael-nadal/n409/overview'>Rafael Nadal</a> played their first doubles match as a team at the 2017 <a href='/en/tournaments/laver-cup/9210/overview'>Laver Cup</a> in Prague.

Just 24 hours later, Federer entered the final match of the event against Nick Kyrgios with Team Europe leading 12-9. After rallying from a set down, Federer recovered from a 5/8 deficit in the Match Tie-break to claim victory. The Swiss saved a match point at 8/9 and earned the trophy for Team Europe when Kyrgios fired a cross-court forehand into the net. After 172 points, Federer and Kyrgios ended the contest with 86 points each.

“The boys played fantastic all weekend, but we knew it could change very quickly on Sunday,” said Federer. “The Team World boys have been great, in the doubles especially, and we knew it was going to be tough. I was looking at getting ready for a doubles at the very end. I’m very pleased and relieved that we did win the singles and got it done.”

Zverev Earns Victory For Team Europe In Chicago
Matched only by Federer, Alexander Zverev earned five points for Team Europe at the 2018 Laver Cup in Chicago. The German finished the event with a 2-0 singles record, highlighted by his tournament-winning victory against Kevin Anderson on the final day.

Zverev entered his clash against Anderson with Team Europe leading Team World 10-8, but the South African made the quicker start as he attempted to push the contest to a winner-takes-all singles match between Novak Djokovic and Kyrgios. Zverev held his nerve in important moments to turn the match in his favour and clinched the trophy when Anderson fired long with a backhand return in the Match Tie-break.

“It was such a close match all around, not only this one but all weekend, a few points here and there and it could have been different,” said Zverev. “I’m just happy to get the win and we defended the title, that’s the most important thing.”

Team Europe won the 2018 <a href='/en/tournaments/laver-cup/9210/overview'>Laver Cup</a> in Chicago.

A European Hat-trick In Geneva
For the first time in tournament history, a winner-takes-all match was needed at the 2019 Laver Cup in Geneva. After two matches on the final day, Team World led Team Europe 11-7 with two singles matches to play. If the visiting team won either match, they would become Laver Cup champions.

Backed by a passionate home crowd, Federer kept Team Europe’s hopes of a third straight title alive with a straight-sets victory against John Isner. That win forced the event to a decisive singles contest between Zverev and Milos Raonic.

For the second straight year, Zverev handled the pressure well to complete a memorable comeback for Team Europe. Zverev and Raonic split the opening two sets, which meant the outcome of the tournament rested on a Match Tie-break.

After receiving words of inspiration from Federer and Nadal in the locker room, Zverev rose to the challenge to claim the trophy under intense pressure. The German earned the title on his first match point with a cross-court passing shot winner.

“It was an unbelievable weekend. Those guys [Federer and Nadal] were screaming at me in the locker room before the Match Tie-break, saying this is how I could turn my season around. Without all of these guys on the bench, I couldn’t have done it,” said Zverev. “This is very special, especially playing in front of those guys and having them trust me to play the last match.”

London Calling For Laver Cup In 2022

English capital to host fifth edition of unique team event

The Laver Cup will be held in London in 2022, with organisers naming The O2 as the venue for the event that will take place from September 23-25, 2022.

London, one of the world’s greatest cities, will host the fifth edition of the competition, following Laver Cup 2021 which will be held next September at TD Garden in Boston.

“We’re so excited to be bringing the Laver Cup to London, a city steeped in tennis heritage,” Laver Cup Chairman and CEO of TEAM8 Tony Godsick said.

“The British fans love their tennis and the Laver Cup is like nothing they have seen before.

“Over one amazing weekend we bring together today’s greatest players as teammates, alongside legends and rivals from previous generations to create a truly unique spectacle that has thrilled fans around the globe."

“London has always held a special place in my heart and it’s going to be incredible to bring the Laver Cup to one of my favourite cities in the world,” Roger Federer, 20-time Grand Slam champion said.

“I know the British fans will love the way the Laver Cup brings together the top players in the world while paying respect and recognition to the legends of our game.”

Named in honour of Australian tennis legend Rod Laver, the Laver Cup is played on a dramatic black court that will be constructed within The O2, a 20,000 seat arena. The three-day team competition pits six of the best players from Europe against six of their counterparts from the rest of the World.

Since its debut in Prague in 2017, the Laver Cup has been staged in Chicago in 2018, and Geneva last year. Boston will host the 2021 edition and 2022 will mark the third time Team Europe has held the ‘home advantage’.

The O2 has welcomed more than 70 million people to music, sports and entertainment events since opening in 2007. No stranger to tennis, The O2 has been home to the hugely successful Nitto ATP Finals since 2009.

“London’s The O2 is one of the world’s most iconic music and entertainment venues,” Laver Cup CEO Steve Zacks said. “It is a destination unto itself, with spectacular scale, design, technology and amenities. It is the perfect setting for the Laver Cup to create an unrivalled fan experience.”

“We are delighted The O2 will host the Laver Cup in 2022 and look forward to welcoming the tournament to London and bringing the excitement of tennis to the British fans,” Gael Caselli, VP of Sport, AEG Europe said.

The city of London has also thrown its support behind the event. “It is a great honour for London to play host to the Laver Cup in 2022," said Mayor Sadiq Khan.

“Londoners are fanatical about sport and have missed the thrill of live events during the pandemic. The capital is proud to have hosted major international sporting events over the years. To add the prestigious Laver Cup to our portfolio is incredibly exciting and we can’t wait to welcome the event to town.”

Thiem To Compete In 2021 Laver Cup

Dominic Thiem will compete in the next Laver Cup, to take place at the TD Garden in Boston from 24-26 September 2021.

Thiem will play in the team event for the third time following his participation in 2017 (Prague) and 2019 (Geneva). The Austrian holds a 2-1 record representing Team Europe, with his victories coming against Team World's John Isner and Denis Shapovalov.

“The Laver Cup is a fantastic event and I’m really excited to be a part of Team Europe for the Boston edition,” Thiem said.

“I’ve been lucky enough to be on the winning side at two of the three Laver Cups so far – in Prague and Geneva, and it’s a really unique event, like no other on the tour. I’m really looking forward to helping Team Europe capture a fourth title.

“It’s so cool to be competing as part of a team with guys I’m normally facing across the net. We have so much fun together, but I also still learn a lot from the likes of Roger and Bjorn, who have so much experience in the game.”

The 27-year-old is flying as high as ever, fresh off his second consecutive trip to the championship match of the Nitto ATP Finals. Thiem won his first Grand Slam title at the US Open and he is at a career-high No. 3 in the FedEx ATP Rankings.

Former World No. 1 Bjorn Borg is still the captain of Team Europe, and the Swedish legend is excited to have the Austrian on his side.

“Dom has had an incredible season, despite the unprecedented circumstances. He consistently performs at the top level and it was great to see him win his first Slam earlier in the year in New York,” Borg said. “With him and Roger confirmed I feel we’ve got a great foundation, but for sure we’ll need to be in top form as each year Team World gets tougher and tougher and my great friend and rival John McEnroe will be hungrier than ever to win in front of a home crowd!”

HEAD BECOMES OFFICIAL TENNIS BALL, RACQUET AND STRING OF THE LAVER CUP

Laver Cup organizers announced today that HEAD, a leading racquet and ball manufacturer, has signed a multi-year deal to become a global sponsor of the event starting with this year’s edition to be held at the iconic TD Garden in Boston from September 24-26, 2021.
HEAD Tennis, a global provider of premium, high-performance equipment and apparel, will become the Official Tennis Ball, Racquet, String, Stringer and Racquet Bag of the Laver Cup.

Since its launch in the late 1960s, when HEAD founder Howard Head first introduced the aluminium tennis racquet, the division’s key products have attained leading market positions based on sales and reputation with many of the world’s top players competing with HEAD racquets.

In one of a number of new exciting initiatives HEAD will work closely with the Laver Cup team to design a special edition Laver Cup branded racquet and bag that will be sold in the lead up to and during the Laver Cup.

The competition pits six of the best players from Europe against six of their counterparts from the rest of the World with tennis legends and great rivals Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe current captains for Team Europe and Team World respectively.

For Laver Cup 2021, HEAD will supply balls for all matches through its Penn brand, a dominant force in the US market with a share of more than 60%.

Many players from HEAD’s high-performance roster have participated in previous editions of the Laver Cup including current World No.1 Novak Djokovic, Taylor Fritz, Diego Schwartzman and Alexander Zverev.

Shapovalov, Felix & Schwartzman To Compete In 2021 Laver Cup

Canadian stars Denis Shapovalov and #NextGenATP Felix Auger-Aliassime will represent John McEnroe’s Team World in the fourth edition of the Laver Cup, which will be held from 24-26 September at TD Garden in Boston.

It will be the third time Shapovalov has represented Team World (2017, 2019), while 20-year-old Auger-Aliassime will be making his debut at the event which was launched in 2017. The pair recently recorded their best-ever Grand Slam results at Wimbledon, with Shapovalov advancing to the semi-finals and Auger-Aliassime enjoying a run to the quarter-finals.

The World No. 13 Diego Schwartzman will join forces with the Canadians as he will also compete in Boston. The 28-year-old, who won the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires (d. Cerundolo) on home soil this year, will be making his second appearance for Team World following his participation in 2018 (Chicago).

On his selection, World No. 10 Shapovalov said: “I’m so excited to be back with Team World for another Laver Cup. I have great memories from both Prague and Geneva a couple of years ago. Roger Federer, Dominic Thiem, and Matteo Berrettini have already confirmed they will compete for Team Europe. The tournament pits six players from Team Europe against six from Team World, with four matches played each day (three singles and a doubles). Team World trail 0-3 as they seek a maiden title this year in America.
