BERNARD Tomic has another young tennis top gun with even better recent credentials to help him prepare for next month's Australian Open.

Canadian powerhouse Milos Raonic will join Tomic at Kooyong for the eight-man AAMI Classic from January 11-14.

Raonic, 20, has made even bigger ranking strides this year than the 42nd placed Aussie teenager, leaping from 156 to 25.

He was voted the men's tour newcomer of the year by his peers, beating Tomic and fellow Australian Matt Ebden for the rookie's award.

The 196cm Raonic pitting his 225 kmh serve against Tomic's deft changes of pace and varied ground strokes is an appealing look at the game's future for fans in the week leading to the Open at Melbourne Park.

Raonic clinched his first singles title in San Diego in February to become the first Canadian to win on the ATP tour for 16 years.

Classic promoter Colin Stubs has also snared top-ranked American Mardy Fish for the last place in his field for the promotion-relegation round-robin event.

Fish rocketed into the top 10 after losing more than 13kg in a fitness program inspired by his wife, actress Stacey Gardner.

The world No.8, a member of the elite eight players at this month's ATP world tour finals in London, will be reunited with close friend Andy Roddick for his first look at Kooyong, the former home of the Australian Open.

Roddick and Fish lived together for a year as teenagers, playing on the same basketball team, before they embarked on their pro tennis careers.

While Roddick was the hare who quickly rose to prominence with a swag of singles titles, including the 2003 US Open among five grand slam finals appearance, Fish took the tortoise approach with gradual improvement to finally edge ahead of his mate this year.

Fish's consistency was reflected by one title, two runner-up finishes, five semi-final appearances and reaching the last eight at Wimbledon.

His first Classic appearance gives Stubs three current top 10 players, with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (6), Tomas Berdych (7), Gael Monfils (16) and Jurgen Melzer (33) completing the field.

"I'm looking forward to seeing how two of the world's most exciting prospects (Tomic and Raonic) take on the more highly-ranked players, like Mardy and Andy,'' Stubs said.

"We're delighted that Mardy, following his best year on the circuit, has decided to prepare for the Australian Open at Kooyong.''

Ośmiu zawodników rywalizowało w pokazowym Masters de Tenis Bilbao.

W ubiegłym roku w turnieju w Kraju Basków najlepszy był Hiszpan Tommy Robredo. Czwarta edycja tej halowej imprezy miała znakomitą obsadę.

O zwycięstwo walczyli: Hiszpanie David Ferrer, Nicolas Almagro, Feliciano Lopez, Fernando Verdasco, Marcel Granollers, Guillermo Olaso i Marc Fornell oraz Francuz Gilles Simon.

Fornell i Olaso awansowali do imprezy głównej poprzez eliminacje. W decydującym meczu Marc pokonał Andoniego Vivanco 6:4, 1:6, 6:3, a Guillermo wygrał z Jose Checą 3:6, 7:5, 6:1.

W niedzielnym finale Simon pokonał Lopeza.

AAMI Classic field gathers at Fed Square



Three current members of the top 10, a former world No.1 and two exciting young prospects will headline the 2012 AAMI Classic field, kicking off at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club tomorrow.

All eight members in the field were today at Melbourne’s Federation Square to take part in a press conference, before heading across the complex to talk in front of a large gathering of fans and to sign autographs.

The AAMI Classic is a prestigious and long-standing lead-up to the Australian Open, an invitational event guaranteeing players three matches as they fine-tune their games in preparation for the year’s first Grand Slam tournament.

Heading the field is world No.6 and last week’s Doha winner Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, who will take on Austrian Jurgen Melzer in his opening match.

Joining him was No.7 Tomas Berdych, fresh from winning last week’s Hopman Cup with fellow Czech Petra Kvitova without the loss of a singles match. Berdych will take on Aussie young gun Bernard Tomic, who has risen to world No.37 since his run to the semifinals of the Brisbane International last week.

When asked what it was like to take his place among a field of such highly credentialled and experienced players, Tomic admitted he felt like he didn’t quite belong yet.

He said he would not let the greater expectation that comes with being the No.1-ranked Australian male affect his mentality on court though.

“There’s a lot of pressure going around, especially for me because I’m young. But I like to play tennis and enjoy it out there ... I’m playing well and I’m confident,” he said.

“Wherever this year takes me, it takes me. I’m going to have fun and not really worry about where my ranking is, and that’s why I’m doing well and playing good. So that’s what I like to do and (with good results) the (high) ranking will come after that.”

Also in the field is Mardy Fish, coming off a career-best season in 2011 at age 30 that saw him qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals in London and end the year ranked No.8.

Asked if he was acting as a role-model for the ATP World Tour’s elder statesman in terms of achieving his best results at this stage of his career, Fish said he and several others were perhaps proving the retirement-at-30 talk a myth.

“Andy (Roddick) is creeping up on 30 pretty quickly and Jurgen is 30 and had a pretty good year last year and the year before hitting the Top 10, so you can certainly do it (at this age),” he said.

Fish’s compatriot Roddick, formerly ranked world No.1 but now down to No.16, is returning to Kooyong for the first time in three years. He said he made this scheduling decision after deciding to have a longer off-season.

“First and foremost I’ve always enjoyed the event. When I made up my mind that I was going to try and have a little bit of a longer off-season and not play that first week (of the new season), the choice was obvious for me to play here,” he said.

“I think (the reason for taking a longer break was) just to get healthy and fit. I feel like I have to be pretty good physically to compete with these young guys so I wanted to give myself every opportunity to do that this off-season.”

Rounding out the field will be Doha finalist and world No.15 Gael Monfils, and last week’s Chennai winner Milos Raonic, who began 2011 ranked outside the top 150 until a barnstorming run to the Australian Open fourth round as a qualifier kick-started his rapid rise into the world’s top 30.

The AAMI Classic runs from 11-14 January and will begin at 11am on Wednesday with the match between Tsonga and Melzer.

An additional match featuring world No.4 Andy Murray against Argentine veteran David Nalbandian will take place on Friday.

Haas gets late chance to play in Adelaide

Tommy Haas has earned a competitive reprieve after being forced out of last week's Brisbane event by injury, with the German's American passport giving him a place in the Adelaide international warmup this week.

The World Tennis Challenge pits teams based on geography and comprising a veteran and a current player on each team at Memorial Drive. German Haas, who has long lived in Florida and California, also has a US passport and will join John McEnroe on the American team.

The spare place came up as James Blake withdrew for unknown reasons. The Adelaide event is run by Darren Cahill, former coach to Andre Agassi and still Las Vegas based.

"Tommy was someone we were very interested in given he is a US citizen and as such works well to complete Team America. Every indication from Tommy is he will be right to go for Adelaide and he is looking for some strong matches ahead of the Australian Open." said Cahill.

Haas struggled in 2011 as he made a mid-year return after hip surgery. He played one match in Brisbane before withdrawing hurt.

"The WTC in Adelaide is perfect. The players in the event are either legends or some of the top guys on the tour such as Dolgopolov, Wawrinka and Llodra, so it provides the perfect balance for me between playing some tough quality tennis, but also to relax and get healthy in preparation for the Australian Open" said Haas.

"I have fond memories of Adelaide having won there in 2001. I have heard great reports about the event and the crowd they get to WTC so I am really looking forward to partnering John and I hope I can help him defend his title."

Others in the field include Australian Davis Cup captain Patrick Rafter, former Agassi and Andy Murray coach Brad Gilbert, Henri Leconte and Mansour Bahrami, a trick-shot artist from the McEnroe era. Joining Haas for the "youngsters" are Swiss Stan Wawrinka and Frenchman Michael Llodra.
