Andy Roddick-Roger Federer to play

NEW YORK -- Roger Federer and Andy Roddick have met 22 times overall and in four Grand Slam finals, including a 16-14 fifth set at Wimbledon in 2009. Now they're taking their rivalry to a new venue: Madison Square Garden.

Federer and Roddick will play a best-of-three-sets match as part of the annual BNP Paribas Showdown exhibition March 5, which also will include Maria Sharapova against top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki.

Federer owns a record 16 Grand Slam titles, and he's 20-2 against Roddick, including 4-0 in major finals.

Federer faced Pete Sampras in an exhibition at MSG in 2008; Roddick never has played at the arena used for New York Knicks and New York Rangers games.

W gazecie z programem widziałam, że Eurosport pokazuje pokazówkę Pete Sampras-Novak Djokovic 27 września (wtorek) o godz. 18.30. W programie na stronce Eurosportu nic takiego nie ma, a zważywszy na obecne problemy Novaka wiecie czy ona się odbędzie? Nie wiem czy ktoś wcześniej o tym pisał np. na poprzednim forum.

Trudno jest mi sobie wyobrazić Novaka na korcie przez najbliższe kilka tygodni. Pokazówka zapewne została odwołana.

Tenis. Byłe gwiazdy zagrają w Polsce



W dniach 23-27 sierpnia 2012 roku po raz pierwszy zostanie w Polsce rozegrany turniej z udziałem byłych gwiazd światowych kortów, zaliczany do cyklu ATP Champions Tour. Decyzję podjęły władze męskiego tenisa ATP Tour i agencja marketingu sportowego IMG World. Wśród zawodników mogą być m.in. Pete Sampras i Andre Agassi.

Regulamin imprez zaliczanych do ATP Champions Tour mówi, że mogą w nich uczestniczyć zawodnicy, którzy ukończyli 35. rok życia i zakończyli zawodową karierę. Poza tym muszą jeszcze spełnić przynajmniej jedno z kryteriów: przynajmniej przez tydzień znajdować się na prowadzeniu w rankingu ATP World Tour, mieć na koncie triumf lub występ w finale jednego z czterech turniejów zaliczanych do Wielkiego Szlema albo mieć na koncie grę w singlowym pojedynku w zwycięskiej drużynie w rozgrywkach o Puchar Davisa.

Oznacza to, że Polsce mogą wystąpić np. Amerykanie Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, John McEnroe, Jim Courier czy Ivan Lendl, Szwedzi Stefan Edberg i Mats Wilander, Australijczyk Patrick Rafter czy też Niemiec Boris Becker.

W czterodniowej imprezie wystąpi co najmniej sześciu zawodników spełniających ten punkt regulaminu. Organizatorzy mają bowiem możliwość przyznania dwóch "dzikich kart", na przykład polskim zawodnikom czy specjalnie zaproszonym byłym tenisistom.

Federer, Nadal to play Latin American exhibitions

Despite complaining about the length of the calendar, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will take part in exhibitions this December.

ESPN Deportes reports that Nadal and David Ferrer will play an exhibition in Mexico City on December 5, just days after the Davis Cup final between Spain and Argentina ends. The Davis Cup final will be played in Spain. Nadal is said to earn at least $1 million per exhibition.

The web site Fue Buena reports that Federer is planning a series of exhibitions in South America sometime after the ATP World Tour Finals in December 2012. There are already agreements in place in Colombia and Brazil, and Argentina and Chile are also options. Brazil News confirmed with Federer’s agent that two exhibitions will be held there. Federer will reportedly earn at least $2 million. His opponents are unknown.

Roddick Returns to AAMI Classic


Former world no. 1, American ANDY RODDICK (ranked 15) will make a welcome return to the 2012 AAMI Classic at Kooyong, January 11-14.

The “A-Rod” from Austin, Texas, has won the event three times. He started the year well by winning the Memphis tournament in February, but has since been hampered by injuries. He rocketed back into form by reaching the semis in Winston Salem and then last month the quarter-finals of the US Open in New York.

Tournament Director, Colin Stubs, felt the time was right to ask the question again: “I had a gut feel this year that Andy might be ready to return. That was vindicated when I picked up the phone to his manager recently and received a positive response” he said.

Czech TOMAS BERDYCH (7), who was part of the 2011 AAMI Classic field, is keen to return, having just taken out the Beijing tournament last week. Over the past two years he has worked on his fitness and strength, so is at the stage where he is a genuine Grand Slam title contender. He reached the Wimbledon final in 2010 and this year has hovered around the finals on twelve weekends (five semis and seven quarter-finals), showing consistent form.

Joining Roddick and back for the third time is Frenchman JO-WILFRIED TSONGA, whose ranking has shot up to 8 after a strong quarter-finals showing at the US Open, a recent win in Metz (France) and a semi-finals appearance in Beijing. In his most successful year, he has reached two finals, three semis and two quarter-finals. His best Grand Slam result was making the semi-finals at Wimbledon.

Compatriot GAEL MONFILS (ranked 10) notches up his second Kooyong visit. Known as one of the finest athletes on the ATP Tour, “Lamonf” is having his best year on the circuit, making the final in Washington, semis in San Jose, Halle and Bangkok, plus five quarter-finals.

Austrian JURGEN MELZER (20) will make his second AAMI Classic appearance. Coached by former Swedish champion, Joakim Nystrom, Melzer has reached one semi-final this year (Monte Carlo Masters) and four quarter-finals.

Highest ranked Australian BERNARD TOMIC (49), who reached the quarter-finals in Tokyo last week and attained the pinnacle of his short career by making the quarter-finals at Wimbledon mid-year, will join the above five players, leaving two spots remaining in the eight man field.

Novak Djoković być może zagra w pokazówce. Serb, jak do tej pory, przed AO ma w planach tylko Adu Dhabi, nie wystąpi w żadnym oficjalnym turnieju w pierwszych 2 tygodniach sezonu.

"I'm not playing any official tournament before the Australian Open," he said. "I'm playing a couple exhibition matches in Abu Dhabi, maybe some in Australia, then getting ready for Melbourne."
