"I'm satisfied to have won and relieved it's over," said Federer. "It was not easy. I didn't play great but you need time to adapt to the surface."

Third seed Djokovic earned $400,000 in prize money after producing a brilliant display of shot-making to beat World No. 1 and two-time former titlist Roger Federer 7-6(2), 2-6, 7-6(2) in the Rogers Cup final at Montreal. The 20-year-old Serb saved six set points in the first set, but defending champion Federer fought back to level the score-line by winning the second set. Djokovic, who had never beaten Federer in their four previous meetings, took the fight to the top seed in the decider and finally wrapped up the match in two hours and 12 minutes. "This first set was really crucial I can say," said Djokovic. "The first set was really important, I saved a couple of set points and I had 40-0 and 5-5 on my serve but I lost it and then after that I really fight for every point and I managed to win that first set which was really important. And to win two tie-breaks against the World No. 1, probably the strongest player mentally on the tour, it's another achievement, it's another success so I'm really, really happy."

Roger Federer became the first man since Bill Tilden in the 1920s to win the US Championships four years in a row and at 26 years of age the Swiss was now two major titles shy of equalling Pete Sampras' career record of 14 titles. Federer, the World No. 1 for 188 weeks in a row, drew on his greater experience to beat major final debutant Novak Djokovic 7-6(4), 7-6(2), 6-4. Djokovic, 20, led 6-5 in the opening two sets. In the first, he held five set point opportunities. He was 6-5 and serving at 40/0. In the second, he missed two. "My next book is going to be called, 'Seven Set Points,'" said Djokovic. Federer admitted, "New guys challenging me - this is my biggest motivation out there. Seeing them challenging me, and then beating them in the finals." Federer took home a Grand Slam championship-record $2.4 million in prize money - $1.4 million for winning, plus a $1 million bonus because he finished atop the US Open Series standings. From 1970 to 2005, no man had reached all four Grand Slam championship finals in a calendar year. Federer had achieved that feat two years in a row.

Novak Djokovic reeled off 13 aces and hit 50 winners to beat Roger Federer 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(5) in the semi-finals of the Australian Open. The 20-year-old Serbian held serve when a break would have changed momentum and handed Federer his first straight sets loss at the Australian Open since the 2000 and 2001 first rounds to Arnaud Clement. Federer had the chance to serve for the first set at 5-3. Djokovic broke twice to win that set and twice more to get to 5-1 in the second in an 11-game sequence that changed the match. Federer, who had been bidding to reach his 11th straight major final, later admitted, "Of course, I've created a monster. So I know I need to always win every tournament." Djokovic drew on his experience in his 2007 US Open final, knowing the pressure was mounting on his rival after such an imperious run. "I am just very amazed I coped with the pressure today," said Djokovic. "In the most important moments, I played my best tennis. It's just amazing, indescribable, to beat the World No. 1, one of the best players this sport has ever had, in straight sets." Djokovic went onto play World No. 43 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final.

Djokovic said, "I didn't feel good for the last three days. I've been waking up with a sore throat. But I thought it's not going to be nothing special. But obviously when you're playing against the World No. 1, you obviously get a lot of balls back and longer points, and I just couldn't get enough energy back after each point. I needed a lot of time. And I just decided not to risk anything. I feel dizziness a little bit in the last three days."

Federer was attempting to become the first player since Bill Tilden in 1924 to capture five straight US Championship titles. Federer broke serve in the fourth game of the 25-minute first set, at 15-40 to take a 3-1 lead. The pair exchanged breaks in the second set, before Djokovic evened the match by breaking Federer in the 12th game on his third set point opportunity. Djokovic saved a break point in the first and third game of the third set, but in the 11th game, Federer broke at 30-40. The Swiss then served it out to take a 2-1 sets lead. Federer broke in the fifth and seventh games of the fourth set. He hit 20 aces and converted five of 12 break points while losing his serve twice in the two hour and 45-minute match. Federer hit 51 winners and committed 28 unforced errors compared to Djokovic's 43 winners and 47 errors.

Federer made the faster start to take the first set. However, he began to struggle with his rhythm and timing in the blustery conditions and crucial errors crept into his game. Breaks were exchanged at the start of the second set before Djokovic took control, reeling off seven straight games from 3-2 to level the match and take a commanding 4-0 lead in the decider. Federer overcame his frustration at his wayward play to recoup one of the breaks, but Djokovic held strong to close out victory in one hour and 46 minutes. It was Djokovic's first victory over Federer since the 2008 Australian Open semi-finals. "I definitely struggled with my timing, so it was a tough finish for me," admitted Federer. "I thought I was playing okay in the first set, but it was always going to be tough in the wind."

Rain came to Novak Djokovic’s rescue as he recorded his second successive victory over Roger Federer in the semi-finals in Rome. Federer had started the match in fine form and clinched the opening set with a break of serve in the ninth game. He was leading 2-1 with a break in the second set when the storm clouds that had been looming brought the inevitable rain. At the resumption, Djokovic won five of the next six games to level the match. Federer stalled Djokovic’s momentum early in the third set by breaking to create a 3-1 lead. However, Djokovic reined in his errors, exhibited more patience in his play, and was rewarded with the next five games to seal victory in two hours and 10 minutes. "I thought he came through with a bit more energy after the rain delay. Before that he was pretty flat," assessed Federer. "I definitely had the win on my racquet today, so it's pretty disappointing."

Roger Federer ended a two-match losing run against Novak Djokovic as he defeated the Serb to capture his first ATP World Tour title after becoming father to twin girls, Charlene Riva and Myla Rose, earlier in the summer. In avenging defeats to Djokovic at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami and the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, Federer cruised through the 33-minute first set with two service breaks and dropping only three points on serve. Djokovic offered up more resistance in the second set and Federer was forced to rally from a 0-3 deficit, and also saved a set point in the 10th game, before crucially converting his fourth of 15 break point opportunities in the 11th game and serving out victory with a love service game. "I think the special part [is] winning for the first time as a dad," said Federer, who won the Cincinnati title for the third time. "It's a great thing. [It] gets me going emotionally a little bit, because I know it's been a wonderful summer."

It was a match that featured arguably the greatest shot that Roger Federer has ever hit, a shot that earned him three match points and a standing ovation from the 25,000 spectators in Arthur Ashe Stadium. Federer appeared out of position to retrieve Novak Djokovic’s lob. But in a split second decision, the Swiss hustled to the back of the court to hit a through-the-legs shot. Federer, Djokovic and the enraptured crowd watched in amazement as the return cleared the net, past the hapless Serbian and landed in. Federer, who closed out the victory on his next point with another winner, admitted: "I was in a difficult position. I had nothing to do. We practise it a lot, but it never works. It’s the greatest shot I ever hit in my life." The shot summed up the day for World No. 4 Djokovic, who stayed competitive with Federer for most of the match but had no solutions for the Swiss’ brilliant shots on critical points. It was the third year in a row he had been beaten by Federer at the US Open. Victory marked Federer’s 40th consecutive win at Flushing Meadows and earned him a shot at a sixth successive US Open title.

In their fourth meeting in a final and their fifth contest of 2009, Novak Djokovic dethroned three-time defending champion Roger Federer at his hometown tournament in Basel. The Serbian broke Federer in the ninth game of the first set and saved four break point points before serving out the opener in a 22-minute 10th game. Federer dug deep to rally from an early break down in the second set and benefitted from an untimely double fault from Djokovic in the 10th game as he levelled up the contest. However, the momentum soon swung back in Djokovic’s favour as the Serb raced to a 4-0 lead in the decider. Federer could find no way back and saw his 19-match unbeaten run in Basel end after two hours and 11 minutes. "I missed too many chances throughout the match," lamented Federer. "Novak played well and made it tough for me to get chances, but when I had them he also played well."

With the No. 2 ranking on the line, Federer capitalised on a spate of unforced errors from Djokovic to race to a 6-1, 2-0 lead. But after belatedly switching gears to play with a greater margin for error, Djokovic worked his way back into the match and eventually held three break points on Federer’s serve at 5-all in the third set. Federer held on, though, and then watched on as the match finished as it started, with Djokovic spraying five errors in the final game to lose serve and the match. "He’s known for being a bit streaky and we saw that tonight," said Federer. "I could have won the match earlier but I’m very happy to have come through anyhow."

To nie tyle kompleks, co warunki. Federer jest 6 lat młodszy od Djoko i to jest bardzo dużo - szczególnie, kiedy Roger ma 30 lat, a Novak jest w najlepszym punkcie swojej kariery.

Having lost to Roger Federer three consecutive years at Flushing Meadows, Novak Djokovic overcame a significant mental hurdle as he saved two match points to upset the five-time US Open champion in a pulsating semi-final victory. "I had to take the chances when I was down match points," said Djokovic. "That’s why [Federer] is the best player that ever played this game, because he always plays his best tennis in the most important moments. It was almost the case again today." Serving at 4-5 in the fifth set, Djokovic fell behind 15/40 but saved both match points with a swinging forehand volley and a down-the-line forehand winner. The Serb then broke Federer in the next game and his nerve was again tested in the final game of the match when he fought off a break point that would have seen the match come down to a fifth-set tie-break. On his first match point, Djokovic trumped Federer in a 22-shot rally to close out the match.
