First played in 1972, what is now known as the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global has been staged in such noteworthy locales as Boca Raton, Los Angeles, New York City, Oakland, Munich, Madrid, Doha and Istanbul. The WTA's season finale be held in Singapore from 2014 to 2018, yet another example of the WTA's huge presence in Asia.

The event features the season's Top 8 singles players and Top 8 doubles teams competing for $7 million in prize money. Martina Navratilova has the most titles in the history of the prestigious tournament with eight, followed by Steffi Graf and Serena Williams with five, and Chris Evert with four. Navratilova also has the tournament record with 11 doubles titles, 10 of them coming alongside Pam Shriver.

The world's only sovereign city-state that is also an island country, Singapore is located in Southeast Asia and is a world leader in several economic areas.

THE DOUBLES FIELD IS SET FOR SINGAPORE

Americans Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears have snapped up the eighth and final spot in the doubles field at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global.

Kops-Jones and Spears secured their qualification by winning their semifinal at the Generali Ladies Linz on Saturday. They'll play Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka in the final in Linz on Sunday.

"We're beyond happy to have made the WTA Finals for the second year in a row and can't wait to take to the court at the Singapore Sports Hub," Kops-Jones said. "There's no greater finish to the season than having qualified and we're delighted to be playing in front of the amazing fans in Singapore again."

The American duo's season is highlighted by titles in Doha and Nottingham, their 11th and 12th WTA doubles titles together over their careers. They also both broke the Top 10 on the WTA Doubles Rankings this year after hovering just outside the elite for years, both getting to No.10 in early March.

And so, the doubles field is set - here are the eight teams heading to the Singapore Sports Hub:

HAWK-EYE TO FEATURE AT WTA FINALS

Hawk-Eye Innovations technology will be part of the WTA's season finale for the fifth straight year.
For the fifth year in a row, Hawk-Eye Innovations technology will be in use at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global. First tested by the ITF in 2005, Hawk-Eye has been a part of the WTA tour since its debut in Miami in 2006. Now, the technology is used at almost every level of the competition - from Grand Slams to top-tier events to the WTA Finals.

Hawk-Eye takes the guesswork out of close line calls by using ball-tracking cameras to determine whether a ball lands in or out. Players are allowed three incorrect challenges per set and an additional one if the set goes to a tie-break. The technology also captures player and ball tracking data, providing coaches with stats on everything from break points saved to the exact contact point of a service return.

Rolex, the Official Timekeeper of the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global, sponsors the Hawk-Eye electronic line-calling system at the tournament, which enhances the game for players and fans alike. The long-standing partnership between Rolex and tennis dates back to 1978, when the brand became the Official Timekeeper of the Wimbledon Championships. Since then, it has sponsored events such as the Australian Open and ATP Masters events in Shanghai, as well as global tennis stars including Roger Federer, Caroline Wozniacki, Ana Ivanovic and retired tennis star Li Na.

Staged at the Singapore Sports Hub from October 23 to November 1, the 2015 BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global will feature the world's Top 8 singles players and Top 8 doubles teams competing for a record $7 million in prize money.

HALEP ON SHARAPOVA, SHARAPOVA ON HALEP

Fans of Simona Halep and Maria Sharapova were biting their nails at the draw ceremony, and their worst fears became a reality - the two highest-ranked players in the field, the World No.2 and World No.3, were drawn into the same round robin group. How do they feel about it?

"It's a tough group. I'll play Sharapova. I never beat her, but maybe I will have the chance here," Halep, who's 0-5 against the Russian, said. "I just want to play match by match, though. Everyone is playing tough here in Singapore. We are the best eight players in the world so every match is like a final.

"I have nothing to lose. I have no expectations. I just want to be happy, play my best tennis, try to win matches and fight. It's the only thing that's important in this last tournament of the season."

The 0-5 record is deceptive though - Halep did push their last three meetings to three sets.

"I think I have positive thoughts about this match here," the Romanian said. "Of course I can lose it, and I can win it. It's not very important the result. I just want to play my best against her and to do a better game than in the final of the French Open last year. I know how to play against her now.

"I hope and believe I have my chance against her. I think it's good timing to face her again."

Sharapova was also asked about the looming blockbuster during her All Access Hour interviews.

"It's a big step for me to be here and feel that I'm healthy. It will be a bigger step that I'll be able to compete in those three matches and finish them off healthy. That's my goal," Sharapova, who's played just one match since Wimbledon because of nagging leg and forearm injuries, said. "Everything else I just have to take the positives out of because I've done everything possible to being here.

"If I can stay healthy and work my way through the matches, no matter who I'm playing, in this particular situation I have to worry about myself a little bit more than who I'm playing against."

Guaranteed, though, that Halep and Sharapova aren't just looking at each other - the other two players in their group, Agnieszka Radwanska and Flavia Pennetta, have given them all kinds of trouble before.

Radwanska has split eight career meetings with Halep, 4-4, and though she's just 2-12 against Sharapova, the two wins came at huge venues - the US Open in 2007 and Miami in 2012, in the final.

And Pennetta has winning records against both of them: 4-1 against Halep, 3-2 against Sharapova.

Red Group action kicks off Sunday with Sharapova playing Radwanska and Halep playing Pennetta.

Co do meczu, ma szczęście Polka, że dostaje Szarapową na pierwszy ogień, bo w kolejnych spotkaniach Halep i Pennetta pewnie będą musiały walczyć ze zdrową Venus...

No epicki był ten wstęp Jońcy, radość z błędu rywalki też już odhaczona. Tęskiniłem mocno za Sharapovą, samo to, że jest obecna to już dużo, faworytką nie będzie, ale może sprawić niespodziankę.

Mario, co do kibicowania Polakom to u mnie podobnie, w siatkówce zawsze za PL .

Nie znam szczegółów przygotowań pań do tego turnieju, ale naprawdę tak źle jest z Marią, że się może wycofać po 1. meczu? Na razie nie widać, aby coś jej dolegało podczas walki na korcie.

Obawiam się, że jej występ tutaj jest podyktowany wyłącznie celami promocyjnymi. Zagra jeden mecz, przegra, a później się wycofa.

Źle pewnie nie jest, ale gra raczej z marszu (w ostatnim czasie było mnóstwo zdjęć Rosjanki z różnego rodzaju imprez), a poprzednie lata nauczyły, że granie i przegrywanie zbytnio jej nie interesuje.

Jest drugi gem na koncie Rosjanki. Mario może być tak jak mówisz, ale jeśli Masha nie siądzie fizycznie to Jej siła zagrań starczy na Agę. Poza tym myślę, że Ona nie znosi przegrywać, gdyby była tak słaba, że groziłoby to pogromem, to by się nie pojawiła.
