Osaka conquers Kasatkina to win first title in Indian Wells

Unseeded Naomi Osaka capped her dream fortnight at the BNP Paribas Open with a dominant display against fellow 20-year-old Daria Kasatkina to win her first WTA title.
INDIAN WELLS, CA, USA - Japan's Naomi Osaka claimed the first title of her promising WTA career on Sunday afternoon on a big stage at the BNP Paribas Open, as she prevailed in a battle of 20-year-olds against Russia's Daria Kasatkina, 6-3, 6-2.
After being broken in the opening game of the match behind a misfiring forehand, Osaka settled in and imposed her will on the first career meeting between two of the WTA's brightest young stars, and won nine of the last 11 games against the No.20 seed to win the first Premier Mandatory event of the season.

With the win, Osaka is first player to win her first WTA singles title at Indian Wells since Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova in 2002, and the third unseeded champion after Serena Williams (1999) and Kim Clijsters (2005).
She is the sixth different champion in the desert in the last six years, and is also the sixth different champion in the past six Premier Mandatory events.
"I was extremely stressed and extremely nervous, but my plan was to fake that I'm very calm," Osaka spoke candidly after the match.
"I just knew that she was going to fight for every point, too, so I couldn't afford to lose points based on nerves, and I had to keep making the right decisions."
Kasatkina was the beneficiary of four forehand unforced errors off Osaka's racquet in the opening game, as the Russian built a 0-40 lead and eventually broke on her third opportunity to begin the match.
However, the Japanese quickly shook off her early nerves to break back in the second game, and got her serve firing. Staying ahead for the duration of the match from there, faced just one break point the rest of the way - in the seventh game of the opener.
She duly saved Kasatkina's chance, and later took advantage of the Russian's misfiring forehand to nab her second break, and move into a one-set lead after 40 minutes behind a pair of crunching backhands.
"It was hard for me to get my nerves in check in the first game, especially since -- I don't know why I decided to serve first," Osaka added. "We were playing some long points, and I wasn't really trying to hit hard today, because I felt like it would be better for her to take my pace.
"I wanted her to do whatever she wanted to do, and I was just going to sit back and see what she does. I feel like I wasn't that aggressive today. I was just more consistent."
The Russian, who also had her share of notable wins in the fortnight against Grand Slam champions Sloane Stephens, Caroline Wozniacki and Venus Williams, could do little to recapture that magic over the course of nearly 71 minutes of play.
Osaka broke again in the first game of the second set, and added a second for insurance in the fifth en route to the straight-set victory, dropping just three points behind her own serve in the process in the entire set.
"Basically she was much better today than me, so she really deserved to win," she said. "I think we were both nervous at the beginning, because [this was our] biggest finals so far. During the match, she was able to manage her nerves and stuff, and I was still a little bit tight.
"She's very powerful. She's playing, serving good, and doesn't have weaknesses. She's hitting her forehand, backhand, so she's really tough."
Already the youngest finalist at the BNP Paribas Open (20 years and 153 days) since Caroline Wozniacki (19 years, 253 days) finished runner-up in 2010, Osaka is also the youngest champion in Indian Wells since Ana Ivanovic (20 years, 138 days) raised the trophy exactly a decade ago in 2008.
The current World No.44, who defeated Maria Sharapova, Agnieszka Radwanska, Karolina Pliskova and World No.1 Simona Halep en route to reaching her second career singles final, will rise to a new career-high of World No.22 in Monday's rankings.
"I really wanted to win this, but also I just tried to think it was a first-round match and just not psych myself out too much," she concluded. "I don't really know what's going on right now. I really feel like I have another match I have to play tomorrow, and it didn't really sink in that I won. I'm happy."

Martina Navratilova: Osaka reminds me of young Serena

Just like her idol Serena Williams before her, Naomi Osaka has figured out how to tame her own game.
You can compare the two as this is kind of similar to the change that a young Williams once went through; the American always had power in her game, and learned how to control it. And now Osaka, who has also always had a lot of power, has herself worked out how to play smarter tennis.
Osaka's looking for the proper spots or opportunities to go for her shots. The result is she's cut out the unforced errors which used to come from going for too much too soon. That shift in approach is probably worth 10 to 15 points every match, and that alone would have been the difference between winning and losing on her run in Indian Wells, where the 20-year-old took her first WTA title on Sunday.
One sign of a champion-in-making is how they react after a big win. Well, Osaka sure came through with flying colours on that front when, having drawn Williams in the first round in Miami, she kept right on form from Indian Wells, beating her idol in dominating fashion, 6-3, 6-2.
In California, and also in Florida, Osaka has been hitting as many winners as she was before, it's just that she has stopped making so many unnecessary mistakes. And now she's likely to just keep on getting better. Once you feel and see how much more effective you are when you control your power a little bit, you embrace that process and concentrate even more on not missing.
There's no doubt that Osaka has the potential to win a Grand Slam. She's just won a tournament that everyone was playing. If you can do that, you're going to believe you can also succeed on an even bigger stage.

I've been following Osaka for a couple of years. For some time, I've seen her talent and potential, but I just didn't how she was going to evolve. This has all happened pretty quickly for the Japanese player, but when you're young you can make improvements in big chunks.
When you have proper coaching - and she's clearly getting that from Sascha Bajin - then your progress can be fast. She's getting the right advice, and she's listening and she's not afraid to try new things. A lot of people are afraid of change, and need a lot of convincing over a long period to try a new approach, but she's embracing it. Osaka has trusted her coach and it's paid off pretty quickly.
To build on Indian Wells and give herself the best chance of future success, Osaka needs to bring a great intensity and work ethic to every practice session. If Naomi can take that same approach into competition, then she will realise she can do it in any match. If you treat all matches as if they're equally important, you then don't go into overdrive when you're playing the majors. You won't go, 'Oh my god, I'm playing at the French Open' and think to yourself that it counts for so much more. You've already given it everything at the smaller events and therefore it is not such a big step-up when you're playing the majors.

You're always going to have fluctuations in whatever your level of play is. But when you're practising with intensity, those fluctuations will be smaller from tournament to tournament, from match to match , and also from, say, the second round to the final. With these smaller fluctuations, you will cut out more bad losses because when you're playing a long way below your best, it's not going to be as bad as before. And maybe you sneak through matches - instead of losing in three sets, you win in three. And then as the tournament goes on, you're playing better.
That's an approach that carries through to the majors. At the majors, there's more chance of having a bad day as you have to play seven matches to win the title, and that's why it's even more important to have the confidence and belief that you can get through when you're not playing your best. It's all about building blocks that make a difference at the end to possibly succeed at the highest level without losing your cool or panicking when you are having a really bad day.
On a separate issue, a decade after women got equal pay on court at the Grand Slams, we still haven't got it in the television booth. This week on the BBC, I spoke about how the corporation paid John McEnroe 10 times more in total than they paid me during last year's Wimbledon and about three to four times more if you pro-rate the events we worked.
Since my interview was broadcast in the UK, I've had a lot of support from other women's broadcasters, sportscasters and journalists. They're all saying that same thing - that they're paid less than their male counterparts of comparable heft and credentials. As I said on the broadcast, if it can happen to me, it can happen to anybody. It's not a fight between me and John; it's just about shining a light on the disparity that is still prevalent. John and I are different kinds of analysts. But I think we're at a comparable level and I don't think the pay is comparable. Something isn't right.

Osaka sinks Serena in Miami, tallies eighth straight win

MIAMI, FL, USA - Newly-minted BNP Paribas Open champion Naomi Osaka was handed the first test of her tenure as a tournament winner by the draw at the Miami Open, and the new World No.22 rose to the occasion.
Osaka recorded her eighth straight victory on Wednesday afternoon, as she ousted eight-time champion and childhood idol Serena Williams in the first round, 6-3, 6-2.
"I was extremely nervous coming on the court. I don't know if anyone knows this but Serena is my favorite player," Osaka said on-court after the match. "Just playing against her is kind of like a dream for me, so I'm very grateful, and it's even better that I was able to win."
The Japanese No.1 handed the eight-time champion her first-ever loss before the fourth round in Miami, as Williams had reached that stage or better in 16 previous appearances.
After the match, Osaka expanded on her admiration for the former World No.1: "She's the main reason why I started playing tennis, and just, I have seen her on TV so many times and I have always been cheering for her, so for me to play against her, and just sort of trying to detach myself a little bit from thinking that I'm playing against her and just try to think I'm playing against just a regular opponent was a little bit hard for me."
Though Osaka admitted to feeling the nerves before her first-ever match against the 23-time Grand Slam champion, the 20-year-old hardly looked it over the course of the one hour, 17 minute match.
Behind 18 winners, seven aces and four breaks of serve, Osaka powered her way to a second-round showdown with No.4 seed Elina Svitolina.
Though she lost the first five points of the match as Williams held at love to begin the match on what's ostensibly been her home court over the course of her career, Osaka settled in by winning a marathon first game on her serve in which she saved a break point.
From there, the World No.22 rode her big first serve in the clutch when she needed it, as she regularly found her spots on big points.
From 3-2 down in the opener, Osaka claimed the last four games of the set, three of which went to deuce and two of those further which were on her serve.
The second set began in similar fashion, as both players had to dig deep to maintain parity with each other. The most crucial game for Osaka came in the early going, as she saved the lone break point she faced in the second set in the third game, and edged her third break of the afternoon immediately after.
Six of Osaka's seven aces for the match came in the second set as she slammed the door emphatically, and totaled 11 winners to just four unforced errors over the last eight games.
Williams, conversely, struggled to find her mark in swirling winds, as she hit 28 unforced errors to just 16 winners in the match overall.
"I was just trying to make my balls in and stuff. If you're playing against someone that's the greatest player, I'm not trying to look over on that side of the court too much, because I think I would freak myself out a little bit," she continued. "I would start thinking if she's struggling, if she's not struggling, if I should be doing this, if I should be doing that.
"I just tried to look on my side of the court and not think too much about what she was doing."
After dispatching the unseeded champion, Osaka will next face the No.4 seed in this tournament in Svitolina. The two have played four times, splitting the meetings, but the Ukrainian scored a win in their meeting this year in the semifinals in Dubai.
"I didn't look at the draw," Osaka said. "I just saw I was playing Serena, and I was, like, 'Oh, well. Might as well just focus on that.'"

W trwającym 73 minuty meczu Osaka zdobyła 23 z 33 punktów przy swoim pierwszym podaniu i obroniła cztery z pięciu break pointów. Japonce naliczono 20 kończących uderzeń i 20 niewymuszonych błędów.
