Q. Not a bad first Grand Slam match. How did you feel out there?
BELINDA BENCIC: I was a little bit nervous in the beginning, but then I just tried to keep the ball in the court. Yeah, I don't know. It was special. Yeah.



Q. Did it feel that different from every other match you have ever played before?
BELINDA BENCIC: I tried not to like think about it, but it was different, yeah.



Q. What's it like when you play somebody Kimiko's age? Do you think about that during the match?
BELINDA BENCIC: No, I was not thinking about it, but I had really trouble to play her because she plays a very different game and very flat ball. I could do nothing with it.

So I had a little bit of trouble, but then I managed to go though it.



Q. You were getting quite stressed in the second set, understandably. How did you sort of get yourself out of that in the third?
BELINDA BENCIC: Yeah, I just tried to forget about the first and second set and just tried to play a new match like if it's a new match and win the third set like this.



Q. You have Li Na next obviously who is a top 5 player in the world. What do you expect from playing her?
BELINDA BENCIC: I don't know. I just finished my match, so I didn't think a lot about the next match, but it will be tough but will be nice experience for me, hopefully on a big court.



Q. What does it mean to you to win a match like this?
BELINDA BENCIC: It means a lot, because I didn't play really at my best, but I was able to fight through, and it was the only thing I could do in that moment.



Q. When you were leaving the court you had a friend with you, another player. Who was that?
BELINDA BENCIC: Sorry?



Q. When you were leaving the court, there was another player walking with you, another girl.
BELINDA BENCIC: Ah, yeah, we are like training partners. We travel together, and we are practicing together. We are like in the team, and she will also play the junior tournament here.



Q. Did Martina give you any advice beforehand? I saw her sitting in the stands, cheering you on.
BELINDA BENCIC: Yeah, she gave me some advice, and I tried to do it.

BELINDA BENCIC: Yeah (smiling).

BELINDA BENCIC: It was both. It was also tactics and mental, and it was just not all about tactics. I also had to do my game, and I think the most important part was in my head, so, yeah.

Q. Where do you think you played today, especially in the second set?
BELINDA BENCIC: Yeah, I think in the first set it was quite a lesson, but in the second set I played better and I tried to be more aggressive.

Q. What was it like walking on to Rod Laver Arena?
BELINDA BENCIC: It was amazing feeling. I always watched like on the court, TV, and I always say I want to play there and today I played there.



Q. Was it bigger than you thought it would be? Smaller?
BELINDA BENCIC: I practiced this morning on it, like the warmup, so I had quite an idea.



Q. What did you think during practice, of the arena?
BELINDA BENCIC: I was just impressed. It was great to play there.



Q. How do you look at the whole experience in Melbourne coming through qualifying?
BELINDA BENCIC: I think it was an amazing tournament now. I came through qualifying. I had a tough draw. I played the first seed in qually also and I could win a round in main draw. So that was awesome.

Now it was great experience against Li Na on Rod Laver.



Q. You showed a good reaction after the first set. What did you change to get into the match?
BELINDA BENCIC: I tried to play more aggressive, like not more risk but just, yeah, more aggressive. Also, my serve was working better, and I think that made the difference. It was more like this. (Showing up and down with hands).



Q. Were you nervous in the beginning? Stadium, Li Na.
BELINDA BENCIC: Yeah, sure, I was nervous, by like not so much like the first matches here. She played just really good in the first set.



Q. How encouraged are you by your performances here, and how you have been able to match it against good players?
BELINDA BENCIC: I think I showed also in qualifying I can beat the qually players here and also some people in the main draw.

And now it's great that I made the experience with 16 years, so maybe later or the next match I can show what I learned from this experience so I will not be so nervous and I will not miss the chances.



Q. Still limited in the number of tournaments you can play because of your age. Is that frustrating?
BELINDA BENCIC: No, I mean, it's not frustrating now. It's okay, because I get three extra tournaments because I finished in the year in the top 5 juniors and I was in the final of two Grand Slams.

So it's okay now. I can have more tournaments, so, yeah, it's enough.



Q. When you were up 4 3 in the second set, did you start to think, you know, Maybe I can win this match?
BELINDA BENCIC: I was not trying to think about the score. I was just trying to play point after point. I mean, I had 4 3 in the second. It was far from winning the match.

But still I just played point after point, and I missed the chance there to go 5 3 up. But, I mean, it's okay. Maybe next time.



Q. Quite a lot of money for losing in the second round. What do you think you'll do with the prize?
BELINDA BENCIC: I don't know. Go shopping (smiling)?

No, I'm, I mean, it's a lot of money also spending on traveling and the whole team, and the family. So, I mean, it's just nice.



Q. Do you feel like people will expect this of you now at every Grand Slam? I mean, qualifying is a very hard thing to achieve. Does that bother you?
BELINDA BENCIC: No. I just will enjoy the next Grand Slam, and I will not let me stay under pressure from anybody, so I will just play what I can and hopefully the results will come.



Q. I think Li Na said you played like Hingis. Do you hear that a lot?
BELINDA BENCIC: Yeah, I hear it a lot.



Q. Is it annoying or you like it?
BELINDA BENCIC: No, I mean, it was obvious because I practiced by her mom, so it's no other choice.



Q. What kind of quality you learn from a big player like Li Na? Is it the big play or the strategy or experience? What kind of thing you like to take away from this match?
BELINDA BENCIC: A lot. I mean, I can learn a lot from her. I was always watching her in TV, and now to play against her it's an awesome feeling.

In the first set, I mean, I had not so much chance; but then in the second I could play better and come, and it was the positive thing of it.



Q. How is it being a 16 year old when you're on the tennis tour all the time? Maybe your friends are living a different lifestyle. Do you find it? Any difficulties in being different world of tennis?
BELINDA BENCIC: No, I don't think it's difficult. I'm in Melbourne right now. I am playing on the Rod Laver Arena. I don't think it's a bad life what I have.

I'm just really appreciating my situation that I can travel all around the world and visit some amazing places, like here. I mean, I was to Japan; I'm in Australia; I'm traveling everywhere.

I'm really happy about that.



Q. Where are you playing next?
BELINDA BENCIC: Pattaya, WTA Thailand.



Q. Next few after that, what's your plans?
BELINDA BENCIC: Then the Fed Cup in Paris and then after we will go to America.

Bencic: WTA Newcomer Of The Year

From Charleston to the US Open to Tianjin, WTA Rising Star Belinda Bencic has had breakthrough after breakthrough this year - and she's the WTA Newcomer Of The Year.

WOLLERAU, Switzerland - After some phenomenal results in the juniors over the last few years, Belinda Bencic began 2014 with one goal - to make a name for herself in the big leagues. Barely in the Top 200 when the year started, it seemed like a longshot, but oh what a year it was for the Swiss.

It didn't take long for the top players to take notice of her - after a hard-fought first round win over Kimiko Date-Krumm, Bencic took on Li Na in the second round of the Australian Open, dropping the first set at love in just 22 minutes but asserting herself in a big way in the 58-minute second set, coming within two points of taking the set in a tie-break but eventually falling to Li in straights, 6-0, 7-6(5).

"She played exactly like Martina Hingis," Li, who would go all the way to the title, said of Bencic.

"She was using a lot of my power to move me around and make me run a lot out there on the court."

That was just the beginning. As a No.140-ranked qualifier, Bencic would storm into the semifinals of the Premier-level clay court event in Charleston in April, breaking the Top 100 afterwards - the first player born in 1997 or later ever to break that elite. A run to the third round of Wimbledon showed she was an all-surface threat, and then the biggest breakthrough of them all, reaching her first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the US Open, the youngest player to do that since Hingis won the title in 1997.

Even more impressive about the 17-year-old's run in Flushing was that she recorded her first two Top 10 wins along the way against Angelique Kerber and Jelena Jankovic - and both in straight sets.

A few weeks later, she reached her first WTA final halfway across the world in Tianjin, China.

Having finished 2013 at No.212 in the world, Bencic finished 2014 all the way up at No.33.

And she's now been voted the WTA's Newcomer Of The Year, joining some very legendary names - Tracy Austin, Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario, Jennifer Capriati, Hingis, the Williams sisters, Kim Clijsters, Maria Sharapova and Caroline Wozniacki, to name a few - among the list of recipients of that award.

"It's a great honor and privilege to have been voted the WTA's Newcomer Of The Year for 2014," Bencic said of the news. "It has been a challenging and rewarding year for me and I hope to be able to build on my success from 2014 in the future. I have been watching top WTA players all my life and to have been able to be on the same court as some of the world's greatest players is a dream come true.

"I hope to make as much progress in 2015 as I did this year. Thank you for voting for me!"

The WTA Awards are voted for by a combination of media and fans. Bencic came out on top in both categories - she got 56 of 58 media votes and 46% of fan votes (Zarina Diyas was next with 23%).

BENCIC SURVIVES HALEP & WINS TORONTO

In absolutely scorching conditions, WTA Rising Star Belinda Bencic outlasted Simona Halep to complete a dream week and lift the biggest title of her career at the Rogers Cup.

As she took out marquee name after marquee name - Eugenie Bouchard, Caroline Wozniacki, Sabine Lisicki, Ana Ivanovic and, in an electric semifinal match on Saturday night, Serena Williams - Bencic became more and more of a crowd favorite as the week went on, and as she would say to the fans in her trophy speech, "Even if I lost today it would've been an amazing experience thanks to all of you."

But there was no letdown whatsoever in Sunday's final as Bencic stayed with the tenacious Halep for exactly two and a half hours before it all became just too much for the No.2-seeded Romanian, who succumbed to heat illness - Bencic would eventually win by retirement, 7-6(5), 6-7(4), 3-0.

"I don't think I'm so good at speeches yet!" Bencic said in her trophy speech. "But first I want to congratulate Simona on a great week, and my mom, my dad and my team. And my fitness coach - I really needed my fitness today! And also Melanie Molitor, my coach - a big thank you to you too.

"And of course a big thank you to all the crowd. You were amazing in every match this week. It's just been such a special tournament, and I'll never forget it - I can't wait to come back next year."

Bencic now has two WTA titles, having won the Premier-level grass court event in Eastbourne in June.

She's the first teenager to win an event at the Premier 5 level or higher since Victoria Azarenka at Miami in 2009. She's also the first unseeded player to beat the Top 2 seeds at an event at the Premier level or higher since Justine Henin at Charleston in 2005 (Lindsay Davenport and Elena Dementieva).

The Swiss is also projected to rise from No.20 to No.12 when the new WTA Rankings are released.

And there's one more: Bencic is the second player to save match point en route to a title at the Premier level or higher this year - Andrea Petkovic saved eight match points at Antwerp in February.

Halep and Bencic will now go to Cincinnati for the second Premier 5 in as many weeks, the Western & Southern Open. Bencic, unseeded, will play Stanford champion and No.11 seed Angelique Kerber in the first round, while Halep, the No.3 seed, will get a first round bye before kicking off her campaign.

Q. Great match today. I'm just curious where you feel like your game is overall. It was a little bit shaky at the end but you came through, across the finish line?
BELINDA BENCIC: Yeah, definitely. I'm very happy I won. I still feel there can be a lot of improvement in my game and how I can play. I see it as a positive thing, because when you lose 6-2 and you play your best, it's not good.

But I'm happy I fought through even if it wasn't perfect. Tomorrow I can have a good doubles match and practice so I can play even better.

Q. It's not over yet, but perhaps a match against Maria Sharapova in the next round. How do you take on a match like that with Maria?
BELINDA BENCIC: Well, yeah, first she has to win. Then I will see, of course. She won the first set I think, no?

So I'm very happy to play all these big players. That's what I play for. For sure, I will prepare good and just be really excited.

Q. When Martina Hingis was at the top of her game she preferred playing a doubles match than having a hard practice session between matches.
BELINDA BENCIC: I agree (Laughter.)

Q. Is that something that's come from her or...
BELINDA BENCIC: No, it's not. I mean, it's just -- no one likes to practice, I mean, when it's really hard. It's better to play doubles where can you have fun and still like you can try some things.

But of course I know it's necessary to practice. Of course I'm doing it, also. But, yeah, if you ask me like this, of course I prefer the doubles.

Q. You made a fast transition on the WTA from juniors, but I was wondering, in the last couple of years as you transition from challengers or ITF events, did you have to be very careful with your schedule as far as getting a lot of matches in at the lower level or playing the bigger events at the WTA?
BELINDA BENCIC: Well, first of all, I couldn't get a lot of matches in because we all had the age limit. So that's why it was very tough to get some serious points. I was happy I did well in the 25,000 and stuff so I could try to play quallies in WTAs.

Of course it helps when you're a good junior; you can also have a wildcard here and there. And then I made the points pretty fast. I think that's good I did that. Yeah, I think it's just really important to get away from those 25s really fast and to compete with the WTA level.

Q. Last year to now, one Australian Open to the next, 12 months later, do you feel ready and how differently do you feel now compared to 12 months ago?
BELINDA BENCIC: Well, that I won the first round (Smiling.) Yeah, I just feel like I'm not as nervous when I go to the court anymore. I mean, when I played last year I was very nervous. I didn't really know what to do on the court.

Now I got a lot of confidence. Yeah, just when I go to the court, I stay more calm and really try to think more what I have to do. For sure, I think my serve got better, which helps a lot in the game.

Q. What did you feel like was an issue last year here when you lost in the first round? Was it just a tough first-round match or do you feel you overtrained in the offseason? Where were you head space-wise?
BELINDA BENCIC: No, I played Julia Goerges and obviously she played a great Australian Open last year, as well. She played a good match against me. So it was not like I was like big favorite to beat her 6-2, 6-1.

But, yeah, I expected a more tough match. I think I didn't do things in practice as well as I should. I realized after what I have to do more, so I improved that, and then in the grass obviously I had a good start.

Q. Ana Ivanovic said that it was tough for her to be in the public eye when she was really young. How do you deal with all the attention?
BELINDA BENCIC: Yeah, of course it's not easy, but I think when you're a good junior and you have the success early, you kind of have to learn it and you have to deal with it. You just take it as a normal thing.

So I try to really stay on the ground, stay humble. I mean, just not do everything like in press, but also let your results on the court speak a lot for you. Just mainly focus on the tennis and not on how popular you are or trying to build up your image or something.

Q. What were you thinking at the end of the first set? And then it went to 2-All.
BELINDA BENCIC: It's normal in tennis, so I don't know. It happens a lot to me, stuff like this. I didn't really care a lot. I tried to play the next game. Of course I was a little bit angry, because I felt like I didn't show what I can 100%. Then I just tried to fight and stay in every game.

Q. Are you aware of your match record this last few months in three-set matches?
BELINDA BENCIC: No, but I think it's pretty good, no?

Q. I don't think you have lost one since last summer.
BELINDA BENCIC: Really? That's good. That's good. Because I was losing a lot, and then my dad and my coach were like, You don't have any fitness. You have to do this and that. (Laughter.)

Now I was like, See?

Q. Has that been the change, you feel, is the fitness level in the third set?
BELINDA BENCIC: Yeah, I don't know if it's only fitness, but also the focus and the belief that you can really play the best at the most important points and you really can't do any stupid mistake in the third set when it's 4-All.

So it's more the focus and confidence.

BELINDA BENCIC: Yeah, definitely was a very good match. I think she served unbelievable, first of all, so that put a lot of pressure on me in my service games, but I think I defended pretty well. I tried to play smart.

Yeah, just a little bit different than her. Then in the end it wasn't enough, but for sure I was fighting till the end, so...



Q. That was your first time facing Maria. What surprised you about her game or what stood out the most for you on your end?
BELINDA BENCIC: That her scream is not so loud (Laughter.)

No, no, no, I'm joking. Definitely I was very impressed how she served; probably she's serving the best now in this moment. Once she plays Serena it will be ace, ace, ace, everything. Will be interesting match, no.

But just in general, like I really tried to hold the rally and then wait for my chances and obviously when she was serving wait for my chances.

But then, yeah, it wasn't enough in the end.

Q. What were your thoughts on the challenge at the end?
BELINDA BENCIC: Well, in my opinion, I was there. I was there and he called it out, so I didn't play. But what can you do against the referee? I mean, there is really nothing you can do.

Q. Did you ask the chair umpire?
BELINDA BENCIC: Yeah, of course I ask. I told her, I was right there. But she was like, No. They never change their mind, so...

Q. A lot of people talk about Serena and Maria and facing them for the first time. Since you have already played Serena, what did you think about taking on Maria in a situation like this?
BELINDA BENCIC: What do you mean now?

Q. The difference between playing sort of these two very well-known, powerful women.
BELINDA BENCIC: Well, today I didn't feel like there was a difference serving. It was even tougher against Maria. She was acing everything, no?

But I mean, obviously they are the top two players of the game. I think they were a lot of like epic battles between them. I'm just really happy now. I faced everyone in the top 10 and the top players. I feel like it's getting -- I'm getting closer and closer. So that's the positive part.

For sure if I will keep working hard and just improve a little bit here and there and also the head, most important situations, it can go well.

I'm trying to take the positive also from today.

Q. What would you like to improve on? Anything specific?
BELINDA BENCIC: On everything, starting with the serve, with just a little bit more fitness, to be more fit, defensive game, offensive game. Just everything. Small details is what matters.

Q. You said you feel like you're getting closer. What are you most proud of from the start of the season?
BELINDA BENCIC: Well, I'm proud of I give everything in every single practice and every single match. So that's really what I want to do this year.

And then for sure I can go much far. I have to put the effort in really everything what I do. If it's fitness session or a practice session, I really always have to give 100%.

Q. You beat Serena last year. What advice would you give Maria to try to beat her if she plays her?
BELINDA BENCIC: I don't think I'm in the position to give Maria any advice. I mean, she's such a champion. Obviously Serena, too.

So, I mean, Serena didn't win yet, first of all. It will be also a tough match. Yeah, I'm definitely gonna be watching and learning.
