Barty: I want young girls and boys to believe in their dreams

Ashleigh Barty knows that she's part of something bigger than just her own talent: her team, her supporters, and her whole nation

Ashleigh Barty has been asked many times this Fortnight about the left hip injury that caused her to pull out of her second round match at Roland-Garros on 3 June. Usually her answers are bright and upbeat, although after her semi-final win over Angelique Kerber she admitted it had been “touch and go”.

But only after Barty’s hands had held aloft the Venus Rosewater Dish did her support team feel able to reveal to her the full extent of the problem. It was, she now knows, a “two-month injury”.

Physiological wonders were worked in the 26 days between her departure from Roland-Garros and her first round meeting with Carla Suarez Navarro.

“Being able to play here at Wimbledon was nothing short of a miracle,” smiled Barty. “They kept a lot of cards close to their chest. It just proved how much we were against the odds.

To be playing pain-free through this event was incredible. Certainly now chatting to them it looked a lot less likely than I felt. It's been an incredible month.”

That adjective is one that Barty – always courteous and engaged in press conferences – uses often, and this time the “incredible” count was enjoyably stratospheric.

On this of all days it was surely appropriate, never more so than when she recalled the moment her knees gave away beneath her as she realised she had fulfilled her childhood dream of winning Wimbledon.

“It was the most incredible feeling I've ever experienced on a tennis court,” she said. “There was certainly disbelief. I've worked so hard my whole career with my team and with people that mean the most to me to try and achieve my goals.

“For tennis players all over the globe, Wimbledon is where tennis was born. This is where it all started. I understood that as I played here as a junior, and was able to experience that incredible week.

“Some of my toughest moments have come at Wimbledon. Now some of my most incredible moments have come here as well. It's just an iconic venue, an amazing Club. To be able to learn so much from this place, I think I'm a very lucky girl.”

One journalist in the press conference put it to Barty that she is “respected around the world as humble, kind and a very nice person”.

They’re a savage lot, the media. But you do have to wonder about the newspaper reporter earlier this Fortnight who described Barty as “showing limited warmth” in her press conferences. Perhaps he had her confused with someone else.

IT'S MORE IMPORTANT TO BE A GOOD PERSON THAN IT IS A GOOD TENNIS PLAYER
“I've just tried to live by my values that my parents instilled in me,” she replied bashfully. “It's more important to be a good person than it is a good tennis player. I was extremely lucky to have an opportunity to learn how to play tennis. But being a good human being is absolutely my priority every single day.”

Then she grinned again, as she reflected on what victory will mean to her nation, 41 years after Evonne Goolagong Cawley captured the title here for the second time.

The two share indigenous heritage, with Goolagong a celebrated trailblazer for her remote Aboriginal community and Barty tracing roots to the Ngarigo people of New South Wales through her father, Robert.

If I could be half the person that Evonne is, I'd be a very happy person.
