Q. How do you explain the twists and turns of this match?

SARA ERRANI: Yeah, first set I start very good, very aggressive. I was playing very good. She didn't put too many first serves, so maybe that was a bit the key. And the second set I start a bit down with the legs, not pushing too much the ball, and she was coming in the court. More first serves. So that was a big difference between the first and the second set. The third was very near. Many breaks. Very near the score.

Q. When you made this motion with your finger to your lips, what was the message that you were giving?

SARA ERRANI: No, I was -- of course I was very nervous. In the 5-4 to go 5-All in the tiebreak I heard the crowd. Never hear the crowd like that strong. I was shaking for the crowd. Was unbelievable good. I think I will remember forever that moment. Of course in the point after I was nervous. I was, Now you don't scream, like if they didn't scream. But of course the crowd was for her, totally for her. I don't know why I did like that.

Q. You weren't angry?

SARA ERRANI: No, no, no, not -- no. No, I was not angry. I was with the tension, with the adrenaline in the body, so I was just -- I don't know. I don't know how to explain it.

Q. Have you ever played in such an up-and-down match?

SARA ERRANI: Yeah.

SARA ERRANI: Yes.

Q. Talk about that.

SARA ERRANI: Yeah, how I say before, I start very good. First set she was not putting too much first serve so I was aggressive with her second serve and was good for me. I don't know. These thing happen. Sometimes in tennis a match can change a lot. These things happen. I was just trying to keep focus also in the second, but I stop a bit. I was a bit tired. I stop my legs a bit, not pushing too much, and she was coming in. So after the second, I just tried to relax a bit and tried to put again my body 100%.

Q. When you're preparing for a match against Venus, do you factor in the American crowd and think about that before you go into the match?

SARA ERRANI: Sorry?

Q. Before you play someone like Venus in her home country, do you think about the crowd and how that may play a factor in the match?

SARA ERRANI: No, not really. I just was thinking about that Venus is a great player, unbelievable player. Every time I play against her she won against me very easy. So I thought that I had to make my level higher, try to be much more aggressive than any time, and try to keep focus every point. Even if I'm going down like in the second, just keep going and try to be focus as I can.

Q. To come away with that win and in that atmosphere, just talk about sort of the emotions.

SARA ERRANI: Yeah, unbelievable, how I say before. The crowd was amazing. Even if it was not for me, it was for her. But to hear that scream of all the people I think I will remember always (smiling).

Q. How would you describe your accomplishment today, what you achieved by beating Venus Williams in this type of match? How would you describe it?

SARA ERRANI: I don't know what does it mean.

THE MODERATOR: Describe how you feel winning such a big match.

SARA ERRANI: Yeah, I'm very happy, of course. You can win, you can lost this match 7-6 in the third. Two weeks ago I won one match 7-6 in the third and the day later a lost 7-6 in the third. These matches can change with nothing, with one point. 5-All in the tiebreak I made that volley. Unbelievable. If I don't do that, maybe I lose. So of course it can change with one or two points. But of course I'm very happy of how I play all the match today. Even if I lose, I think I improve my game from the last days. Try to push, try to change a bit my game. Of course I like to play not that aggressive, but I know that with Venus and on that court you have to be more aggressive than I can.

Q. What are your thoughts on the level of Venus' play now, given that she's 34 years old and she's overcome an illness to participate? How do you think she's playing, and what do you make of the way she's doing things?

SARA ERRANI: I think she's playing unbelievable. I really don't know how I won today. Of course I think Venus is playing very good today. Maybe she didn't put too many first serves. Maybe she can make me feeling a bit worse if she put a lot of first serve. Today she didn't put too much. And also in the second I was very aggressive and was good for me so maybe sometimes is difficult to play against her because her serve is unbelievable. And even on the baseline with the forehand she making a lot of points, so he it's not he easy to play against her. But I think she's unbelievable player.

Q. You're playing your next match against Lucic-Baroni, who was just in here and described her win over Halep as the best day of her life. When asked if she felt like she was born again, she said yes. She's full of enthusiasm. She's riding a wave of confidence, for sure. What do you expect from this match?

SARA ERRANI: Yeah, I know her. She hitting very strong the ball. Is not easy to play against her for that, because she hit that ball really strong. Is not easy to move, to play. So for the moment relax, be happy for today, and from tomorrow, I think tomorrow we have double, and then thinking about the match. Of course will be not easy. She's playing very good if she won against Halep. Have to be concentrate and try to keep on with my game.

Q. How did you feel like you played today?

SARA ERRANI: Very good. I mean, it was tough match. She served very strong. She hit the ball unbelievable strong. Is the kind of player I don't like to play too much, so I just tried to be very focused every point. Tried to shut up the most I can. So be focused try to hit when I can. Was, I think, very good match.

Q. Is it strange for you to see the winners? You had four at the end and she had something like 45. Contrast of styles?

SARA ERRANI: How many winners she did?

SARA ERRANI: Me? And me?

Q. Four.

SARA ERRANI: Yeah, of course is normal with this kind of player. I don't have the chance to make what really I want to play. So to move the ball, to be long point with her is impossible. She hit the ball very strong. She made winners and she made unforced errors. So I just have to try to make her make mistakes. This is my game against her. Is difficult for me to make winner when she hits ball that strong. I know that before going to the court, so important thing for me was to try to move her, try to be more consistent again, and try to be aggressive when I can. But of course it's difficult.

Q. Have you paid attention to how many of the top women's seeds have lost this week? I guess what do you sort of make of that?

SARA ERRANI: Well, I think there are a lot of still good players. Is normal. It's a Grand Slam. Every time happens that someone lose and someone win. So just try to be on my street and continue.

Q. Are you a player that looks ahead in the draw and maybe looks to see if there is an opportunity because there are upsets or anything like that?

SARA ERRANI: Yes, I always look the draw. I love to watch also the other side, not only my side. I love tennis, so I like to watch all the matches.

Q. If you could compare your game with one men's player playing right now, is there someone similar that's playing similar to how you play?

SARA ERRANI: I don't know. I love very much Ferrer because I practice with him. I saw his career. When I was young I start to practice with him. I was maybe 300 and he was already up in the rankings. So I watch him a lot how he was practicing, how was making the decision, and how is the person is. So I like it very much. I think it's unbelievable player. He work a lot. He stay focus on what he has to do. I like Ferrer very much. Of course he had much, many more success than me, but of course I like to watch him.

Q. You're one of the best tennis players in the world. You have had a fabulous career. I'd like to ask you if I could, if we can talk about your serve, how you learned that motion, about how many aces you hit a year. Could you just talk about that?

SARA ERRANI: Well, I don't serve very fast. Of course you see that. It's difficult for me. I try to improve my serve, but I think I have a different kind of serve. I don't try to make winners with my serve. I just try to make kick, make slice, try to change my game. I cannot serve at 180 per hour. I know that, so I try to be more consistent that I can. So make a lot of first serve in and try to maybe play with kick. That sometimes is good for me. Of course I have to improve it a lot, but is not easy. I try. With that serve I have been 5 in the world, so it's not that bad, I think (smiling). It's a bit different of the other. I don't try to hit the strongest I can. Maybe I can sometimes try to push more, but I don't want that. I want consistence. I need to start the point where I want. So sometimes is better for me to serve not that fast, because if you serve fast the ball is coming faster. So I try not to hitting that fast. I try to change a bit the direction and be ready for making the point on the baseline.

Q. About how many aces a year do you serve?

SARA ERRANI: I really -- is not my problem. I don't look at that. Is not my game. Is not my game to making aces, so I don't have problem if I don't make one in a year. Is not my problem.

Q. You may play Sharapova or Wozniacki next. Can you comment on that, what it would be like to play one or the other?

SARA ERRANI: What can I do? Both are amazing player, playing very good, so will be tough with both. Of course Sharapova, never won against her. She's amazing player. Wozniacki is playing unbelievable too, so it's very difficult for both.

Q. Back to Cincy with that incredible overrule. That was one of the most bizarre overrules I have seen. Have you had any interesting comments on that since then?

SARA ERRANI: No. I understand the chair umpire can make mistakes. Everybody can make mistakes. I said also to the other person, He made really good job in all the match. Only that mistake. Of course you can have mistake like everybody. Of course I was a bit nervous because was 3-All, 40-all, so was of course very nervous. But I understand that the chair umpire can make mistakes. For me was making two mistakes, but it's okay. Happens.

Q. What's the goal for you? You have been top 5 in the world; you have won doubles Grand Slams; you have been to a slam final. Do you want to win a singles Grand Slam, or what would be a success for you?

SARA ERRANI: No, no, I never think like that. Is very difficult to win singles Grand Slam. Is not my goal. My goal is always the same. I always say for me the important is go on the court and try to do my best. Of course sometimes you win. Doesn't depend only of you. There is an opponent. There are conditions. So every week is different. So I just try to be focused on my game, try to work good, to practice good, to be focused on what I have to do, and try my best. Of course I know that won every match is difficult. First round, second round, is very difficult to win matches. All the players are very strong. So is not easy. I just try to stay there and try to do my best and see at the end of every year what I have reached.

Q. Millions of people from my country go to your country every summer, every year. If you could tell us Americans the one city or village to go to in your country, what would that be?

SARA ERRANI: I cannot say mine because it's very small. Is not that unbelievable. But I think Rome is -- I love Rome. It's amazing city. Everything, I think. The people there, you have a lot of things to watch, and it's I think -- you eat very good, so it's maybe the best for me (smiling).

Q. Better people watching in Rome or New York or Paris?

SARA ERRANI: What?

Q. Better people watching?

SARA ERRANI: Watching what? The match?

Q. Watching people. You know the phrase, people watching. Help me out here Ubaldo.

SARA ERRANI: (Through translation). Rome, for sure. It's Italy (smiling).

Q. Wozniacki is running a marathon in a couple of months. Did you know that?

SARA ERRANI: She's what?

Q. Running a marathon.

SARA ERRANI: Yeah, I heard about that.

Q. Is that something you would do?

SARA ERRANI: No, no, never. I hate running. No, no, not for me. My coach did last winter, and it's every day, I made the marathon, I made the marathon. I don't like to run, so it would be impossible for sure. Maybe one day, but I don't think so (smiling).

Q. But you like running on court?

SARA ERRANI: Yes, yes, on court. Yes. On court, yes, but running like this all the time, slowly, I don't know. Four hours, five hours, no, no, no. I cannot. I think I cannot do that.

SARA ERRANI: Yeah, I think was much stronger than me physically. I think was the most important difference today. She doesn't let you play. She never miss. Of course was feeling quite good for shots, but physically not that good. She was much better than me about that.

Q. Do you think you were tired from the long matches in the tournament? What do you think it was?

SARA ERRANI: I don't know. Of course a bit of that. Of course she's stronger than me. I have to work more on that. She's very good. She don't miss a ball. Every point long points, make me feel worse physically. So was important thing. I tried to change my game in the second to be much more aggressive. Tried to go more on the net, because on the baseline was she was making me died. Tried to be aggressive on the net. I was trying, but is difficult.

Q. She plays a very defense-oriented game. Her defense is her biggest strength. Do you imagine a player can win a Grand Slam with defense?

SARA ERRANI: Of course. I don't think she's only defending. She's good. She's very intelligent on the court. She's very ordinata - I don't know in English how to say. Yeah. I don't think -- she's pushing the ball all the time but with intelligence, or I think so. Yes, she can win. She's playing I think very good.

Q. But in general do you think a player has to be aggressive to win a Grand Slam? Because we haven't seen...

SARA ERRANI: For me she's aggressive. I mean, she don't miss. She wait a good ball. She's good defending and is not only playing aggressive. For me is not only make winners of the point. I mean, if you push the ball long points all the time but without missing, I mean, she -- for me, she's not only defending for me. She's good.

Q. The way she's been playing here, do you think this is about as good as you've seen her play lately?

SARA ERRANI: Yes. Yeah.

Q. What was your plan going into this match?

SARA ERRANI: Yeah. My plan was to be aggressive. I made a mistake at the beginning. Of course when you start you're a bit nervous. I don't want to make mistakes. So I was just looking to find the ball good and move, but maybe in the first set three games she made me be physically very tired because we had long points. I had to be more aggressive. I tried in the second, but not that good. Of course when you are tired it's tough to be very - I don't know in English - preciso on what you are doing. I want to put the ball on one point, and when you are tired it's more difficult to do. I was trying that, but she was playing very good, very solid.

Q. How about the quality of her returns, her returning tonight?

SARA ERRANI: Good. I mean, for me she served good today and in the baseline good. I mean, if she play like that she don't need to, how I can say, to make winner on the return. She can play long points. She's very good physically. Point by point she find the feeling, and without missing. She's not in a hurry to make winner. So I think it's a good thing.

Włoszka z dopingową rysą wróci do Auckland. Sara Errani dostała dziką kartę

Sara Errani otrzymała dziką kartę do turnieju WTA w Auckland. W minionym sezonie Włoszka zanotowała dopingową wpadkę i była zawieszona na dwa miesiące.

Sara Errani w swoim dorobku ma dziewięć singlowych tytułów w głównym cyklu. W 2012 roku doszła do finału Rolanda Garrosa. Najwyżej w rankingu była notowana na piątym miejscu.
W minionym sezonie na tenisowym życiorysie Włoszki pojawiła się rysa w postaci dopingowej wpadki. W sierpniu ogłoszono jej zawieszenie na dwa miesiące, do 3 października w powodu wykrycia w jej organizmie Letrozol. Jest to substancja wykorzystywana jako lek w terapii po pomenopauzalnym raku piersi. Z taką chorobą od 2005 roku zmaga się matka tenisistki. Jej zeznania wskazały, że to ona mogła przyczynić się do tego, że ta substancja znalazła się w jednej z potraw serwowanej córce.

W Auckland nie będzie mogła wystąpić Wiktoria Azarenka, która wciąż toczy sądową batalię ze swoim byłym partnerem Billym PcKeaguem o prawa do opieki nad ich synem, Leo. W takiej sytuacji organizatorzy postanowili przyznać dziką kartę Errani.

Gdy Włoszka wróciła na korty, w październiku była notowana na 280. miejscu. Półfinały w Tiencinie (WTA) i Dubaju (ITF) oraz tytuł w Suzhou (ITF) pozwoliły jej awansować do Top 150 rankingu. Aktualnie klasyfikowana jest na 132. pozycji.

Dla Errani będzie to czwarty występ w głównej drabince singla ASB Classic. Dwa razy dotarła do ćwierćfinału (2008 i 2012), a w 2015 roku odpadła w I rundzie po porażce z Danielą Hantuchovą. Włoszka to deblowa mistrzyni nowozelandzkiej imprezy sprzed dwóch lat w parze z Robertą Vinci.

Największymi gwiazdami w Auckland będą Karolina Woźniacka i Agnieszka Radwańska, odpowiednio finalistka z 2015 i mistrzyni tej imprezy z 2013 roku. Wystąpi też Monica Puig, złota medalistka igrzysk olimpijskich w Rio de Janeiro.

Sara Errani znów zdyskwalifikowana. "Czuję się bezsilna wobec takiej niesprawiedliwości"

Sara Errani będzie musiała odpocząć od tenisa przez najbliższe osiem miesięcy. To efekt decyzji Sportowego Sądu Arbitrażowego w Lozannie, który zwiększył dyskwalifikację włoskiej tenisistki.

Pierwotnie finalistka Rolanda Garrosa 2012 została w zeszłym roku zdyskwalifikowana na dwa miesiące za stosowanie letrozolu. Jak argumentowała Sara Errani, środek ten dostał się do jej organizmu wraz z posiłkiem, który przygotowała jej matka. Mama tenisistki przez dekadę walczyła z chorobą nowotworową i aby uniknąć jej nawrotu zażywa lekarstwo zawierające letrozol.

Decyzją Międzynarodowej Federacji Tenisowej Errani nie mogła występować na światowych kortach od 3 lipca do 2 października 2017 roku. Ponadto sprawą zajął się Sportowy Sąd Arbitrażowy w Lozannie, który po siedmiu miesiącach wydał decyzję. CAS uznał, że tenisistka rzeczywiście nie zażyła zakazanego środka celowo, ale też nie zrobiła wszystkiego, aby zapobiec jego dostaniu się do organizmu. Tym samym podjęto decyzję o zdyskwalifikowaniu Włoszki na kolejne osiem miesięcy. Zachowa ona punkty i nagrody pieniężne wygrane od października 2017 do czerwca 2018, ale na kort będzie mogła wrócić dopiero 8 lutego 2019 roku.

Errani jeszcze w piątek brała udział w turnieju WTA Challenger na kortach ziemnych w Bol, w którym miała się zmierzyć o finał z Magdą Linette. Tenisistka jednak niespodziewanie wycofała się z chorwackich zawodów, podając jako powód sprawy rodzinne. Teraz wszystko wskazuje na to, że już w piątek poznała decyzję CAS.

- Czekałam na ten werdykt przez siedem długich miesięcy, dlatego uważam tę dyskwalifikację za hańbę. W całym moim życiu nie zażywałam celowo żadnej substancji wzmacniającej organizm. Za bardzo kocham tenis, aby to robić. Oddałam całe moje życie sportowi i nie sądzę, aby na coś takiego zasłużyła. Czuję się bezsilna wobec takiej niesprawiedliwości - wyznała była piąta rakieta świata, która nie jest przekonana, czy znajdzie jeszcze siłę, aby wrócić do rywalizacji w przyszłym sezonie. Od decyzji CAS zamierza się jeszcze odwołać.
