Q. How exciting was to second set tiebreak?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Well, I hope it was exciting for you guys. It was kind of crazy. You know, it became just mental and I just had to fight. I'm happy I pulled through in the end. We had some crazy points.
Q. In the tiebreak you were losing 8 9, but you made an incredible forehand shot. Explain that moment.
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I don't even remember that. Yeah, I mean, I was just in the moment, just trying to go for it.
She played some really good points, too, on my match points. It was a battle back and forth. I felt overall I didn't play as well as I know I can.
But, you know, even if it's a bit ugly, still fight and try. Yeah, I'm happy I pulled through.
Q. You lost your way a little bit at the beginning of the second set. You must be happy how you came back.
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Yeah, she's a good player. She can serve well, hit some really flat shots, change direction a lot.
I think she had me on my heel a little bit. When I was down 4 1, I kind of relaxed, started playing my game. It was a really big change after that. I felt I played a lot better.
Q. How do you feel about losing three match points in a row?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: It happens. I wasn't even really disappointed on the court.
Two games earlier, she was up 40 Love, I won the game. It happens. People have lost matches from being ahead a lot. I wasn't disappointed. I was calm and I was confident, you know, if I played well I could get that chance again.
Q. You're usually fairly businesslike at the net with a handshake. That was a warm moment. Do you have any history at all?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: No, I just thought because she was French they do the kissy thing. I thought she maybe kind of wanted to. I was hesitating. I just kind of went for it (laughter).
Q. Atmosphere pretty good on that court with your fan club?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Yeah, they're amazing. I don't know where they came from, these Australian guys. But they're really supportive. They just come up with all these songs. It's really cool. I think it gets the rest of the crowd really involved, as well.
They better show up to my next match.
Q. Pretty straight faced through it all. I assume you hear it?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I do, in the back of my head, I hear it a bit. But I really have to stay focused and wait till the end of the match to crack a smile.
Q. Is that a present the fans game to you?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Yes, gave me a little Koala. They say themselves The Genie Army. Reminder of who they are. They're the Australian support.
Q. Will you keep it?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I'll put it in my room somewhere, I think.
Q. Quite a long time since a teenager won a Grand Slam. A lot is talked about how difficult it is now for teenagers to do that. Do you think things are starting to change? There's a few of you coming through.
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I think it's still really tough. There are some of us who are kind of breaking through a little bit. We still have a lot of tough moments. We have success, but we also have losses.
I think the older, experienced players are still really dominating right now. But as time goes on, I think I'll do better. I feel like I've gained experience in the past year. Hopefully I can start doing better right away.
Q. How does it differ playing someone you're expected to beat or being the underdog?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: For sure it's different now. I came into this slam seeded now for the first time. So, of course, my first few rounds I'm expected to win. I always expect myself to do well.
I just try to ignore the outside expectations and pressure and really just focus on what I need to do. At the end of the day, I really need to perform. I can't really worry about what people say on the outside.
Q. Lauren Davis or Georges, how do you feel?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I played Davis in the juniors. Never place Georges. It will be interesting to see. They have different games. Georges plays aggressive, hits hard. Davis gets a lot of balls back, but she can move the ball with her forehand and backhand.
I don't know who is winning, but I'm looking forward to it and I'm just going to try my best and try to play better.

Q. A hot day, you're playing a roadrunner. Are you happy with your performance?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Yeah, it was definitely hot today, the hottest I felt in any of my matches so far. I was happy to win in straight sets.
I thought I played well, tried to be aggressive, really tried to control the point. Made for quick points, as well.
Q. Is that a concern when you play a player like that, she runs down everything?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: She's a good player. I wasn't worried or concerned about anything. I really just wanted to play my game. I felt I did. I knew I could dominate the way I did if I played the right way.
Even my serve was working well today, as well.
Q. Fourth round in a Grand Slam. Very happy milestone for you?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Yeah, for sure. But I always want to do better. I think it's just a step in the process. I'm trying to always improve on the court. I think I played better today on the court. That's what I'm most happy about.
Q. You're the former junior girl's Wimbledon champion. Do you like the hard courts?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Yeah, I like the hard courts. I like the courts here at the Open. I played juniors here four times, made semis twice. I've always liked the courts. I like the color. I've always played well here, I think.
Q. What do you think it's going to be like coming up against an Australian at the Australian Open?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Interesting for sure. We'll see in my Genie Army stays at my side.
She's a tough opponent and she's a lefty. That's always tricky, always different. I'll be looking forward to a good battle on Sunday.
Q. Are you ready to be public enemy number one?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Yeah (smiling).
Q. The Genie Army are pretty vocal. Have they followed you or is this something new at the Australian Open?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Yeah, no, it's the first time I've seen them. They're from here. They just come out to support me. I love them. Their songs are like getting stuck in my head because they're singing them so much.
It's fun to have that extra support and it's motivating.
Q. Do you think they might be a little bit less vocal against the Australian?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I don't know. We'll see. I'm sure some will still be supporting me.
Of course, I'm playing an Australian in Australia. Regardless, there's going to be a really good atmosphere on the court no matter what.
Q. What was the gift today?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: This little kangaroo with a cute baby kangaroo with another baby kangaroo in its pouch. Just collecting Australian stuffed animals. Next time I'm expecting a bigger one.
Q. What is the X factor about tennis? Why do you love the game so much?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I started when I was five. I just love the feeling of hitting the ball. I love being on the court and playing and competition. I'm competitive in everything I do, everything from tennis to board games.
Just going out there and trying to win is what I love.
Q. What is your goal as a tennis player? What is your favorite shot in your game?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: My favorite shot is my serve. When I'm feeling good with it, I can really control the point, try to be aggressive with it. So I just want to keep improving that and keep improving my game, which is really trying to be aggressive.
Q. Casey was asked about the rigors of the tour. You seem to thrive on the actual pressure.
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Thrive on what?
Q. The pressure of playing week in, week out, the rigors of it all.
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: It is tough. Last year was my first full year on the tour. I saw how different it was from the juniors. Definitely on a professional level, the mental aspect is tough. Week in, week out you have to play tough players even from the first round.
But I love it. I mean, I'm happy I can call this my job. I love playing tennis. I find it fun. When there's pressure, I think it just makes it more interesting.
Q. Last year was obviously a massive breakthrough for you. Have you set yourself any targets for 2014 ranking wise?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I have a number always in the back of my head, but I always just try to, you know, say that I'm trying to improve and trying to get better. I think I've worked hard in the off season. I really want to go deeper in draws.
It's my second time around now doing the full tour. I kind of know how it is, know what to expect. So I think I can keep improving and get better.
But my ultimate goal is to win a Grand Slam. I'm always just working to try to achieve that.
Q. What is the thought process behind the clothes you're wearing for this tournament, the style?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: The clothing? It's very fashion y. I don't think you'd understand it. It's high waisted. I tuck in the top. Just a different look.

Q. In the first set I think your backhand was more unstable than usual. How did you get through it?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Yeah, I felt the first set, it was a bit shaky. I feel like I still served well in the first. I made a few too many unforced errors, wasn't being aggressive enough.
Then in the second and third, I really just, you know, stepped in more and really controlled the points. And that worked really well.
Q. First quarterfinal at 19. How are you feeling? Nervous, excited, mixture?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I'm excited, yeah. We're at a Grand Slam. I'm just so happy to be playing, looking forward to playing another match. Just really happy to be here and excited to play my next match, hopefully play well.
Q. Do you give yourself more of a chance of beating Ana Ivanovic than if it was Serena?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: She beat Serena so she's playing really well. I saw a little bit of the match, so she was definitely playing really well. I'm going to look forward to a really tough battle. We're in the quarters now, so she deserves to be there. No one's going to give it to me, so it's going to be a good match.
Q. Did you feel the support from the Genie Army tonight?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Yeah. They were trying to rival her little group of people. Obviously the whole stadium was for her more. I got a gift again today. It's a kookaburra. I'm getting the full range of the Australian animals (smiling).
Q. How many stuffed animals did you get so far?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Now I have three. Just looking hopefully in two days I can add to my collection.
Q. You didn't seem to get very nervous. When was the last time you were getting super nervous in a match?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I get a little bit nervous before every match. I think that's normal. I think that's part of competition.
I think I was a little bit nervous in the first set, but I was able to calm myself down and really just focus on how to play and what to do during the points. I think once I really started just being more aggressive, that's what my game is. So I just felt more confident on the court.
Q. Casey said in the second and third sets the conditions changed a little bit, which she thought helped your game. Did you notice any conditions change?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I didn't really notice anything. Maybe the wind died down a little bit. Definitely in the first set it was windy on one side. You had the wind with you.
Just something you have to be aware of. It's the same for both of us, so...
Q. It seemed like you could have pulled away sooner. Did you feel like maybe you could have done that in the first set? Maybe why didn't it happen?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Yeah, I think I could have. Like I said, I was just feeling I don't know. I mean, I felt fine on the court. Just a few too many unforced errors, things like that.
She did play well in the first set. She gets a lot of balls back and made me hit a few more balls. I ended up making the error where in the second and third I didn't.
But, you know, I was happy I was able to regroup after the first and get my game back together.
Q. You lost in quallies here last year. Now you're three matches from winning the title. Does this feel ahead of schedule?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I wouldn't say so, no. I always expect a lot from myself. Every match I go on the court believing I can win. Just take it one match at a time.
I just have a match in two days. Just looking forward to that.
Q. You spoke the other day about how tough it is to win a Grand Slam as a teenager these days. But the draw opens up a little bit now, doesn't it?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I don't know if you can say that. Obviously Serena is No. 1 in the world. But Ana played well and beat her. I think she's playing really well right now. She also won in Auckland. I think she has a lot of confidence and it will be a really tough match.
Q. The level between juniors, like when you won Wimbledon, to now, didn't you find there was a fairly significant jump? Doesn't it surprise you a bit that in a year and a half you're in the quarters of a slam?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I think there is a difference, for sure. When I played the juniors, though, I was 18, so I still felt a little bit of pressure being kind of older and still playing in the juniors.
But, you know, that was my choice. I still think I did well winning a slam.
But, yeah, I mean, it's definitely, you know, another level in the pros, definitely mentally tougher I think. But I think winning junior Wimbledon gave me a lot of confidence. Right away I transitioned into the pros really well.
So I don't know. A year and a half is a long time, too. It's not something that surprises me.
Q. Why do you think you've been able to transition better than a lot of other junior slam champs?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Well, I think first of all I got a lot of confidence winning a junior slam showed me that I belong here, I can do well, things like that. Just the constant working on my game, really trying to get better. Really just being tough on the court, battling match after match. It's gone well so far and I hope I keep improving.
Q. Tactically from watching you in juniors until now, it seems your game has changed the last year or so. You're aggressive, hitting a bigger ball, bigger serve. Did you make those changes specifically because you needed to be a little bit more aggressive on the senior tour?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Yeah, well, you know, like I said, it's all about constantly trying to work and trying to improve. Just in this past off season I was working on my serve, trying to hit a bigger serve, bigger shots, like you said. For sure, you need to have weapons on the pro tour. Just trying to work on them, get them better, as well as the mental side, just trying to be tough in the matches.
Whereas in the juniors, you know, maybe the girl will crack or something. But in the pros here, it's really tough match after match.
I just think it's really important to always try to constantly improve.
Q. What do you remember about the match with Ana at Wimbledon? What do you think worked in your favor?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I remember just being so excited to be on Centre Court, trying to look in the Royal Box to see who was watching the match.
I think I played well in that match. I'm going to talk to my coach and talk about, you know, tactical things to do against her. But I'm feeling confident. I feel like I'm playing well. But it's going to be a battle. I'm just going to try to be aggressive, and I know she will, too, so I'll be ready for that.
Q. How is Rod Laver compared to Centre Court in Wimbledon and Philippe Chatrier?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: They're all, you know, amazing in their own ways. It was really cool to be out there tonight with a lot of atmosphere, most against me. It was still really cool.
Q. How did you keep focused and calm throughout the day?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I slept in till like noon, so really wasn't much of a long day.
Just staying relaxed. I only came here at the site like at 3:00. Just hit, did my thing. I think I was really excited to play. I was just looking forward to going on the court, so it wasn't really hard.
Q. You slept in till noon. How many hours of sleep did you get?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Like over 12 hours (laughter).
Q. What do you do to keep your mind off tennis during a Grand Slam?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I watch TV shows. Like right now I'm watching Heart of Dixie on my computer, yeah (laughter). Just watch other things.
But I do enjoy watching tennis at night, the night matches, things like that. Of course, it's tennis. But to me it's still watching as a fan, it's entertaining.
Q. You watch the other girls or just the guys?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Everything. Whatever's on.
Q. Doesn't get you stressed out at all?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: No. I mean, I love tennis. It's my life. So thinking about tennis all the time is kind of what I do. So I don't really try to get away from it too much. Once in a while, yes. But it's my job.
Q. Who are your favorite other players on the men's and women's tour to watch?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Well, I love Roger, of course. I watch all of his matches. Just watching the great champions. Watching as a fan, also as a student, trying to learn from them. Watching Maria, Serena, watching how they play, you know, what things they do on court that I can learn from.
Q. What have you made from Ana Ivanovic's forehand?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I think that helped her win today. She was hitting it really well. I'm going to be ready for it in two days.
Q. Could you tell us the story of your YouTube of Laura and Genie Gangnam style?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: We just wanted to show what we do off court for fun sometimes. To have fun off the court, it's not always 100% serious.
Q. You dance around China a lot off court?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: No, not that much (smiling).

Q. Are you satisfied with the results in this Australian Open?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I'm proud of, you know, how I've improved as a player throughout the tournament. But I'm never satisfied with losing. I'm always disappointed.
You know, I always want to go further and do better.
Q. What did you say to yourself when you went down Love 5 so quickly?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I just wanted to get into the match a little bit more. I felt like she was really hitting her shots. I was kind of just letting her do all these winners side to side. It wasn't really my game.
I just tried to get into the rallies more, try to step in a little bit more, and try to put more pressure on her because she was just putting a lot of pressure on me.
Q. Were you nervous at the beginning of the match?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: A little bit. But, you know, I am before every match, so I think that's normal.
Q. Set point down in the first round on Court 15 to this, have you exceeded your own expectations?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Yeah, I wouldn't say I exceeded my expectations, but I'm happy with how I did.
But like I said, I always want to do better. To me it's not a surprise. I've been working hard my whole life to do this, play at Grand Slams and do well. It's not an overnight thing and it's not a surprise to me.
So I'm just going to go back to the practice courts and keep working hard.
Q. After 5 Love down you played pretty even with her for a while. Any reason you couldn't sort of quite turn it?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I mean, I think she played really well. You have to give her credit. All of her groundstrokes were like a foot from the baseline and she was very consistent. Even her serves were really solid.
I felt like she didn't give me much breathing space, much room to do what I want to do on the court. I tried to put pressure, but she just played too good at moments.
Q. A year ago when you didn't have great success here, if someone came up to you and said, Don't worry, you'll make the semis next year, what would you have thought?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Good thing I'll be a lot better next year.
Yeah, I mean, I did lose in quallies here last year. Last year I still have some good results besides that. I think, you know, it's just a process. I learned a lot last year. I've slowly been making my way up. I don't want to stop here. I want to keep going.
Q. What's the one single best thing that Nick brings to you as a person and a player?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I think the best advice he gives me is really related to the mental side. I think he's really good with that. He really gets me to focus on the court and, you know, just focus on playing well. I think that's the most important thing, is trying to perform. When you perform, the results come.
But the advice he gives me as well just before walking on the court is, Just enjoy it. I have been these past two weeks. I've been enjoying my time on the court.
Q. Was today's match different than playing a normal match?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: A little bit. I try to think of it as just a normal match, but it feels bigger. It makes it more important to stay focused. I came out and I wasn't quite playing very well. I was missing shots by a little bit here and there. She really took it to me at the beginning.
Something you have to learn to really, you know, just get into it, go for it right away. But I feel I got into the match a little bit, but it wasn't enough.
Q. Did you feel tighter, more weight on your shoulders?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: A little bit, yeah. I'm nervous before every match a little bit, which I think is normal. But, I mean, it did feel a little bit of a bigger match.
But at the same time I played two matches on Rod Laver, as well. I felt like I'd been there and played well on that court. So I just wanted to try to do the same. But I had a really good opponent today as well.
Q. This is a fairly big deal at home. Have you been feeling that in any way, been able to sense that?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: A little bit. But, you know, we are on the other side of the world here. It's a bit far. But, you know, I know my family and friends back home are excited for me. It's making news a little bit.
It's just kind of my job, a normal thing for me. It's exciting to be here, but at the same time, you know, I want to do better and do more. So it's just kind of like my job. It just feels normal.
Q. Which way do you think it will change your life as a tennis player?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Maybe a little bit. You know, my ranking will improve and stuff, so that's good. But can't stop, can't rest on results. I mean, it's really important to keep improving and looking forward to the next tournaments.
Q. How excited were you to get a tweet from Justin Bieber?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I was excited (smiling).
Q. What do you take away from this tournament? Self confidence? Experience?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: For sure. I feel like I belong in the top levels of the game. I think, you know, I'm happy with how I've played. I feel I've been playing well and improving through the tournament.
Even though I was playing matches, I felt I was getting better as the matches went on, which is a good thing. I want to build on that and practice and keep raising my level.
For sure I'll walk away with confidence.
Q. Back in Montréal, did you ever play for the team at the private school you went to?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: No. I was just practicing, not playing for the team.
Q. There's been a lot of compliments on what you've accomplished here. Are there any in particular you've heard of from somebody that you respect that left a mark with you?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I've been kind of in my own world. I haven't listened to much outside stuff. Just been trying to stay focused and things like that.
I mean, you know, what matters to me most is what my family or my coaches say to me. But maybe someone will tell me what other people told me, but I don't really know.
Q. What is your goal as a tennis player, including winning a Grand Slam?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Yeah, I think that's the biggest thing to me, is winning a Grand Slam. The four best tournaments of the year. I feel like I made good progress this week, a big step getting close to that goal.
I'm not there yet, so I have a lot of work to do.
Q. If you could choose one of the four slams, which one would you most like to hold up the trophy for?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I love all of them. They're all special in their own way. I won junior Wimbledon, so maybe professional Wimbledon would be nice.
Q. Do you think this success will change your life and you will get more endorsements?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I mean, I guess you could ask my agent that. We'll see.
Q. Can you explain the gift.
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: It's an emu. Her name is Sheila. I got a gift even though I lost. Thanks to the Genie Army.

EUGENIE BOUCHARD: It's her name. It says it right here (laughter).

New Goals Needed for Bouchard After Australian Efforts By REUTERSJAN. 27, 2014, 9:17 A.M. E.S.T.
SINGAPORE — The first month of the year is not yet over but Canadian teenager Eugenie Bouchard is already looking for new goals for 2014 after breaking a ranking milestone on Monday.
The 19-year-old rose from 31st to a career-high 19th thanks to her surprise run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open last week.
"Early at the beginning of the year I said as a ranking goal I wanted to be in the top 20 so I have accomplished that," Bouchard told reporters in Singapore.
"So now I need to change my goals, of course its all about consistency as well and staying in the top 20 and getting to a certain level and staying there."
Having dispatched former world number one Ana Ivanovic with some powerful hitting in the quarter-finals, the former junior Wimbledon champion struggled to a straight sets defeat to eventual champion Li Na in the last four.
Undeterred, the tall blonde haired right hander said the experience of reaching a first grand slam semi had been invaluable.
"Yeah I had a good experience at the Australian Open this year, I played really well and am happy with how it went but of course I'm never happy when I lose a match so disappointed with that but really happy to get the experience," she said.
"I'd never played a tournament longer than a week before so still being in the same tournament 10 days after it started was new to me and really interesting so I hope I can experience that many more times.
"It gave me more self confidence and showed me that I belong at the top level and that I can play against great players and play well and keep my composure on big courts as well. I played three matches on Rod Laver and it was such a good experience."
Bouchard was in the southeast Asian citystate to help the WTA promote their end of season championships, which will take place in Singapore for the first time in October.
Her strong run in Melbourne left her joint third in the Road to Singapore rankings and she revealed she was eyeing a spot in the top eight which would earn her a berth at the finals in Singapore.
"I think this year is going to be my second full year on the Tour so I'm looking forward to doing everything again," said the Montreal-born Bouchard, who is yet to win a WTA event.
"I know all the experiences, I've been to all the cities and the big tournaments so I'm just looking forward to being on tour and playing the sport I love and improving as a tennis player.
"Of course it will be really tough to make them, the top eight in the world is a great achievement so its one of my goals and I'm just really looking forward to working hard and trying to get there."
