Wimbledon Diary: Cue The Waterworks; Tweets From Tiger, Bear & More
Wimbledon, Great Britain
Roger Federer told Andy Murray that the speech
was meant to be the easy part.
ATPWorldTour.com takes a look at the news and talking points on final Sunday, which featured Roger Federer vs. Andy Murray in the Wimbledon singles final.
Cue The Waterworks
After an emotional on-court speech that left spectators in tears, Murray exchanged an embrace and a laugh with Federer. The British No. 1 shared afterwards that he had apologised to Federer for the waterworks, explaining, “I didn't obviously want that to happen. You feel like you're kind of attention seeking or something. It was not like that at all.
“I’ve seen Roger do the same thing a couple times before, so he kind of knows what it’s like,” he added. “He just laughed. He said, ‘This is meant to be the easy part, doing the speeches after the match.’ But sometimes it feels quite hard compared with playing a tennis match.”
The King’s Lead
Murray had cited LeBron James as an inspiration prior to the Wimbledon final, and stated Sunday that the NBA MVP’s fight to win his first championship title continued to give him hope.
“Stories like that, to me, are inspiring,” he said. “Kind of gives you that extra bit of belief. Sometimes guys have taken much longer than others. I think he said after he lost in the NBA Finals last year, he said that he’s having to go through a lot of nightmares before he reaches his dream. To me, I think I’m in a similar situation right now. It doesn't get easier. When you lose, it’s hard, it’s tough to take, but you need to try and show strength of character to come back from it. Hopefully one day you get there.”
James, who turned pro in 2003, led the Miami Heat to the NBA title last month after a runner-up finish last year. He shared his support for Murray on Saturday, tweeting, “Congrats on getn to the final. Honored by the shout out. Will be rooting for U. C u in London!” His teammate, Dwayne Wade, also gave Murray a shout out after the final: “Big S/O 2 @MiamiHEAT fan @andy_murray on a gr8 Wimbledon. Finals ths year..like us U 2 cn come back & win it nxt yr

Tiger’s GOAT
Following Roger Federer’s win over Andy Murray in the Wimbledon final, golf superstar Tiger Woods (@TigerWoods) tweeted, “Hats off to Murray for a great fight. But we saw why Fed is the#GOAT.”
When Federer was asked if he heard about the Tweet, he revealed, “I didn't need to get it through Twitter, I got one from himself. He was very pumped up these last couple days for me. He was very supportive.
“It's nice when other greats like this believe in me. They push me further… I wish him the best as well. He knows that. Obviously with Facebook and Twitter, all [of] this [is] much more public now. But it feels great to receive so much support from such great athletes.”
