Rafael Nadal equalled and broke several records as he demolished Novak Djokovic 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 in the French Open final on Sunday for his fourth straight title at the clay-court Major.

This was his record-extending 13th title (in 16 editions) at Roland Garros and 20th Grand Slam title, matching Roger Federer’s all-time men’s record of 20. Federer has held the record for more than 11 years, from his Wimbledon 2009 win right after he broke Pete Sampras’ record of 14.

With his dominant win, he became second man and fourth player in the Open era to cross 20 Majors. His 20 titles include 13 French Opens, four US Open titles, two at Wimbledon and one at the Australian Open.
Nadal has 100 match wins on Paris’s famous crushed red brick against just two defeats in 15 years. The two losses came to Robin Soderling in 2009 and Djokovic in 2015.
No player, male or female, has achieved 100 singles wins at French Open. Players have reached triple digit wins at the other three Grand Slams, but never at Roland Garros.
Nadal has a 13/13 record in French Open final and has in fact never been taken to a fifth set in a final at Roland Garros.
This is the fourth time (French Open 2008, 2010, 2017, 2020) he has won a Major without dropping a set, overtaking Bjorn Borg’s record
At 34, the Spaniard is the oldest champion in Paris since Andres Gimeno in 1972 and he won the title without dropping a set.
This was Nadal’s sixth Major after turning 30, the most among male players. Djokovic has five while Federer, Rod Laver and Ken Rosewall have won four each.
Nadal is also the first player in the Open Era, male or female, to win any tour-level event 13 times, surpassing his own and Martina Navratilova’s record.
This is Nadal’s 21st win over a world No 1, the most by any player male or female.

KL Rahul played a captain’s knock and Chris Gayle fired in his first game since January as Kings XI Punjab finally ended their five-match losing streak with an eight-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League on Thursday.

Chasing 172 in a must-win game, the in-form opening pair of Rahul (61 not off 49) and Mayank Agarwal (45 off 25) got off to a flying start before Gayle (53 off 45) joined his skipper in the middle to get KXIP close to the finishing line.

Needing seven off the final two overs with nine wickets in hand, KXIP somehow managed to take the game to the last ball with Nicholas Pooran finally hitting the winning six.

Both Rahul and Gayle smashed five sixes each, rendering the opposition attack helpless.

Batting first, skipper Virat Kohli top-scored with 48 off 39 balls in his 200th game for RCB before Chris Morris’ 25 off 8 in the death overs took the team to 171/6. It was a rare all-round effort from KXIP who had failed to close out games earlier in the competition....

IN PARIS, NADAL AND SWIATEK EACH SENT A MESSAGE ABOUT TENNIS’S FUTURE

The 19-year-old Pole signaled the rise of a new generation on the women’s side; the 34-year-old signaled the return of the greatest generation on the men’s.

“Congratulations, Rafael Nadal!” Iga Swiatek tweeted on Sunday. “It’s amazing to kind of share this experience with you. Am I even allowed to say this?”

The enthusiasm, the shyness, the warmth, the thought process happening right out in the open: Swiatek’s tweet summed up what tennis fans had seen, and loved, about the 19-year-old during Roland Garros.

And yes, she was allowed to share her first major title with Nadal’s 20th. Swiatek is a fan of Rafa’s—“He was the only player I watched”—and she has spent time training at his academy in Mallorca. Like everyone else at that academy, she dreamed—tentatively, of course—of doing what Nadal has done so many times: holding up the trophy at Roland Garros.

“Sometimes I caught myself visualizing that I’m also winning a Grand Slam,” Swiatek said, when she was asked if she was inspired by watching peers like Naomi Osaka and Bianca Andreescu win their first majors. “But on the other hand, it was also, like, really far away…You believe in things, but in the back of your head you know there’s going to be, like, a huge amount of work that you have to do to win that.”

Does that quote remind you of anyone? It makes me think of the way Nadal has always approached the sport, with a mix of positivity and rationality, confidence and caution. He describes his upbeat mindset as “playing with the right emotions”; she says “you believe in things.” He calls the effort needed to succeed “suffering”; she calls it a “huge amount of work.”

However you want to describe it, their down-to-earth approach was an historic success over the last two weeks. At Roland Garros, Swiatek and Nadal became the first man and woman in the Open era to win the same Slam event without dropping a set. As easy as they made it look, neither took their title run for granted. In this upside-down year, it was hard for them to believe that anything like this would be possible.

“Right now, when I’m here and a Grand Slam champion, it’s crazy,” Swiatek said.

“For me, honestly, one month and a half ago if you tell me you're going to have this trophy with you again, I will say, ‘This year will probably be too difficult,’” Nadal said.

Rafa and Iga are obviously at different stages of their careers. She just won her first major title; he just won his 20th. Her victory was a breakthrough and an announcement; his was a culmination. After chasing Roger Federer up the major-title mountaintop for 15 years, he finally caught him. Rafa characteristically downplayed that milestone, and instead focused on his relationship with Roland Garros and Paris. He took the opportunity to talk about his love for the city and the tournament in a way he never had before. The fans there have never totally embraced Nadal; if the bleachers had been full, this could have been the moment when that all changed.

Despite their differences, I came away from Roland Garros thinking that Swiatek and Nadal both sent a message about the future of the sport as it closes out 2020 and looks to regroup in 2021.

The message from Swiatek is that there’s a top tier of talented and thoughtful young women players that is growing with each Slam. Naomi Osaka, Bianca Andreescu, Ashley Barty, Sofia Kenin, and now Swiatek each upended the WTA with their major-title runs over the last three years. Each plays interesting tennis, and each brings a different energy to the court. Osaka and Swiatek already seem to be each other’s biggest fans. Now, as Swiatek alluded to in her final press conference, we just need to get them all playing well at once.

“I know my game isn't developed perfectly,” Swiatek said. “Also I think the biggest change for me is going to be to be consistent. I think this is what women's tennis is struggling with. That's why we have so many new Grand Slam winners because we are not, like, as consistent as Rafa, Roger, and Novak. That's why my goal is going to be to be consistent. It's going to be really hard to achieve that.”

Where Swiatek’s win signaled the rise of a new generation, Nadal’s signaled the return of an old one—the Big 3 generation, the greatest generation. Just two weeks after Dominic Thiem ended their long streak of major titles in New York, Nadal and Djokovic reestablished their positions at the top of the ATP in Paris.

It was nice, after all these months, to have that Big 3 vibe back, wasn’t it? Nadal and Djokovic have played 56 times, but for me their matchup never gets old, because they’re always making adjustments to each other, and then making adjustments to those adjustments. Beyond that, they also brought a sense of perspective and sportsmanship that can only be gained after fighting each other for big titles for a decade and a half. Djokovic called Nadal the king of clay, Nadal said he was pleased to share this era with Djokovic, and each rightly marveled at the other’s career and achievements.

Their missing Big 3 brother, Federer, got in on the action later, when he tweeted about his respect for Nadal, and his satisfaction in sharing the 20-Slam record with his friend and rival. One of the best things about Sunday was the way Federer and Nadal immediately put the clamps down on the GOAT debate, Rafa by de-emphasizing his 20th title, Roger by emphasizing their bond. The debate will happen eventually, of course, but each of them went out of his way to say that this wasn’t the day for it.

The dual dominance by Nadal and Swiatek in Paris was also a story about what young athletes can learn from legendary athletes. Watching Swiatek stride out for one of her matches clutching a racquet in one hand and listening to music on her big black headphones reminded of watching Nadal do the same thing when he was 19. (In her case, the music was “Welcome to the Jungle,” in his, it might have been “Phantom of the Opera.”) As players, they have their similarities: The ball seems to explode off their strings, and they both love putting as much topspin on it as possible. But they win in different ways: Swiatek with easy power, Nadal with gritty consistency.

What Swiatek seems to have learned from Nadal is the most important thing a role model can teach. It’s not about how to hit a forehand or when to go for a winner. It’s about trusting yourself.

As a teenager, Nadal did things differently. His uncle was his coach, he stood 10 feet behind the baseline, he leapt in the air to celebrate his winning shots, and he played with a physical abandon that most people thought was unsustainable. Rafa’s style had its skeptics, but he didn’t change anything, and now he has 20 major titles.

Swiatek’s game, in particular the spin and power she generates, is unique, too. On Saturday, she was asked whether she thought she was doing something different from everyone else..

“I know that my topspin forehand can be dangerous,” Swiatek said. “Yeah, I don't know actually where that came from because I always played like huge topspin and I love to spin the ball.”

“Really, I mean, I just have my instincts. I think this is helping me a lot.”

In that sense, Iga really did share the experience with Rafa. He won his 20th, she won her first, but they each trusted their instincts and did it their own way.

From his 13th Roland Garros title to his 21st career win over a No. 1, and his 60th clay-court title to his 100-2 record in Paris, the Spaniard continues to rewrite the history books.

Some doubted if he could do it this year—he skipped the US Open, lost in Rome, the conditions were different than the ones he’s used to—but Rafael Nadal silenced them all, sliding to another Roland Garros title without even dropping a set, beating Novak Djokovic in the final, 6-0, 6-2, 7-5.

Here are 20 stats about the Spaniard’s latest (and maybe most historic) win in Paris.

He won his 20th career Grand Slam title, tying Roger Federer’s all-time record. Among a laundry list of big stats, this was the biggest one—the two are now co-GOATs, at least for the time being.

The Grand Slam race is now 20-20-17 instead of 20-19-18. If he had lost to Djokovic in the final, the Serb would’ve been just one major behind him—by winning the final, he’s now three ahead.

He’s now won exactly one of every three Grand Slams he’s played. Nadal was playing the 60th Grand Slam of his career at 2020 Roland Garros, and he’s now won 20 of them—exactly one in three.

He won Roland Garros for the 13th time. Only one other player in history, male or female, has won double digit titles at the same Grand Slam: Margaret Court won the Australian Open 11 times.

He became the first player in the Open Era, male or female, to win the same tour-level event 13 times. He broke a tie with Martina Navratilova, who won the WTA event in Chicago 12 times.

He improved to 100-2 in his career at Roland Garros. That’s a .980 winning percentage, his only two losses coming to Robin Soderling (fourth round in 2009) and Djokovic (quarterfinals in 2015).

He became the first player ever, male or female, to win 100 matches at Roland Garros. Players had done it at the other three majors—Federer at the Australian Open, Navratilova and Federer at Wimbledon, Chris Evert and Serena Williams at the US Open—but nobody had done it in Paris.

He’s now 13-0 in finals at Roland Garros. It’s by far the best perfect record in finals at a specific Grand Slam by a man or woman in tennis history. The best any other player has done is 8-0.

He’s now a combined 26-0 in semifinals and finals at Roland Garros. When he gets past the quarterfinals on the terre battue, watch out—he’s only dropped 10 sets in those 26 matches, too.

He improved to 20-8 in Grand Slam finals. Broken down by Grand Slam that’s 1-4 in Australian Open finals, 13-0 in Roland Garros finals, 2-3 in Wimbledon finals and 4-1 in US Open finals.

He handed Djokovic his worst loss in a Grand Slam final in his career. The Serb only won seven games—the fewest games he had won in any of his previous 26 Grand Slam finals was 13.

He bageled Djokovic for just the second time. Only two of the 149 sets they’ve played against each other have been bagels, and it’s Nadal who inflicted both of them—in the first set of his 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 win in the Rome final in 2019, and in the first set of his win in the Roland Garros final in 2020.

He improved to 10-6 against Djokovic at Grand Slams. Djokovic still leads his overall head-to-heads against both Nadal (29-27) and Federer (27-23), but Nadal has the upper hand over the other two members of the Big 3 at Grand Slams, leading both Djokovic (10-6) and Federer (10-4).

He improved to 49-0 as the No. 2 seed at Roland Garros. He’s now gone all the way to the title all seven times he’s been the second seed: 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2019 and 2020.

He’s now on a 30-match winning streak at the clay-court major. He went 2-0 in 2016 before having to withdraw with a wrist injury, then went 7-0 in 2017, 7-0 in 2018, 7-0 in 2019 and 7-0 in 2020.

He won his 60th career ATP title on clay. He was already the only man to win 50 or more career ATP titles on clay. Next on the list is Guillermo Vilas, who won 49 career ATP titles on clay.

He’s the first man in the Open Era to win four majors without dropping a set. He also achieved the feat at Roland Garros in 2008, 2010 and 2017. He had been tied with Bjorn Borg at three.

He’s now the fourth player in the Open Era, male or female, to win majors in three different decades. He won six in the 2000s, 13 in the 2010s and now one in the 2020s. He joins Navratilova (1970s, 1980s, 1990s), Serena (1990s, 2000s, 2010s) and Djokovic (2000s, 2010s, 2020s).

His win over Djokovic was his 21st career win over a No. 1. That’s more than any other man or woman since ATP and WTA rankings began in the 1970s. Boris Becker has the next-most with 19.

He prevented Djokovic from becoming the first man in the Open Era to have a Double Career Slam. Had Djokovic won in Paris, he would’ve won every major at least twice, something no man has done in the Open Era. Nadal can now become the first to do it if he wins the 2021 Australian Open.
