PREVIEW-Federer eyeing a win for the ages at U.S. Open

Open has long been a tournament for the 20-something set but an in-form Roger Federer is looking to break that trend at the year's final grand slam. In the last three-plus decades only Pete Sampras in 2002 and Jimmy Connors in 1983 won the men's side of the tournament at Flushing Meadows in their 30s. Both were 31. Now here comes 34-year-old Federer, fresh off an impressive win on the hardcourts in Cincinnati. Even though he is seven years removed from his last Flushing Meadows triumph, Federer has been buoyed from an equipment change and his work with two-times U.S. Open champion Stefan Edberg. "I would like to give Stefan a lot of credit and he has helped me in a big way," said Federer, who won five straight U.S. Open titles between 2004 and 2008. "But I think the backhand is better since I also have a bigger racket head. I really think that was the change because it happened at the same time." The 17-times grand slam champion moved into second spot in the world rankings with his win over Novak Djokovic in the Cincinnati final, which means he will not face the Serbian world number one unless the rivals reach the Sept. 13 final. "Number two, three doesn't really matter," the Swiss maestro said. "To be quite honest, I don't think that far ahead because I haven't been in a final since 2009 (when he lost to Argentine Juan Martin del Potro). "So I've got my work cut out." Last year, Marin Cilic of Croatia claimed his first grand slam title with a straight sets win over Japan's Kei Nishikori. There has not been a successful defence on the men's side at Flushing Meadows since Federer's run. As the ninth seed, Cilic is on Djokovic's side of the draw and could face fourth seed Nishikori in the quarter-finals. Djokovic, Federer and Andy Murray arrive as the favourites. Murray won in Montreal. Both Federer and Murray beat Djokovic for their Masters Series wins in August. Murray has the most difficult U.S. Open draw of the three because he will meet unseeded Australian Nick Kyrgios in the first round and possibly French Open champion and fifth seed Stan Wawrinka in the quarter-finals. As the eighth seed, two-times champion Rafa Nadal has a potential clash with Djokovic in the quarter-

Nick Kyrgios plans to let his racquet do the talking as he bids to spring the first big shock of the US Open on Tuesday.

Condemned and sanctioned for his trash talking, Kyrgios hopes to remind fans of his playing talents with a first-round upset win over third-seeded former champion Andy Murray in the headline act on day two at Flushing Meadows.

He's just one of nine Australians in action, but all eyes will be on Kyrgios when the 20-year-old hits the court for the first time since copping a four-week suspended ban for his crude sledging of French Open champion Stan Wawrinka at the Montreal Masters.

Despite falling to Murray in all three previous clashes, including in straight sets in Melbourne and Paris, Kyrgios believes he can turn the tables on the Scot to really shake up the men's draw.

"I've played him three times now, I know what his strengths are and know how to play it. I just have to execute it on the day," Kyrgios said in his first interview since being placed on notice by the ATP.

A quarter-finalist at the Australian Open despite battling a back injury, Kyrgios feels the best he has all year after a torrid week training with Lleyton Hewitt at the former world No.1's Bahamas base.

"Obviously having Lleyton on court's helped me a lot," he said.

"I feel like I've been practising well, my preparation's been really good and I feel like I'm playing some really good tennis.

"He's (Murray) in form too, probably playing the best tennis of his life, winning Montreal and losing to Federer last week, pretty tight, so I know that he's one of the best players in the world at the moment.

"I just have to go out there and play the right style of game and believe I can win."

Thanasi Kokkinakis, the Davis Cup teammate at the centre of Kyrgios's taunting of Wawrinka, has put the issue behind him and is backing his Open doubles partner to take the fight to Murray.

"Nick's shown he can beat quality players before. If he puts it together on the day, regardless what happens off the court, his tennis is good enough if he's on," Kokkinakis said.

"But obviously Murray's a tough ask. He's been playing some good tennis of late too.

"So it should be a good match. It's a hell of a first round."

Win or lose, Kyrgios is vowing to be on his best behaviour - even though the ATP's tough sanctioning doesn't apply at ITF-governed grand slam event.

Kyrgios considers Murray a friend and mentor.

"He's always been someone I can sort of talk to, if that's sort of through Twitter or in person," Kyrgios said.

"He's been someone that's helped me. I've got a good relationship with him and he knows the journey as well.

"He's been through some tough times, so it's a lot of ups and downs out there."

Kokkinakis, up against French 12th seed Richard Gasquet, Australian No.1 Bernard Tomic and former champions Hewitt and Samantha Stosur, are also in action on Tuesday, as are James Duckworth, John-Patrick Smith, Jarmila Gajdosova and Ajla Tomjlanovic.

Skoro tak, to trzeba dzisiaj solidnie się wyspać, żeby jutrzejszej nocy być w pełni gotowości na ten mecz. Jeżeli Nicka nic nie zaboli, to możemy być świadkami znakomitego meczu. Murray raczej nie przegra, ale trudno pokusić się o stwierdzenie, że to zwyczajny mecz pierwszej rundy. Raczej nie o takim rywalu na otwarcie turnieju marzył.

No raczej. Mi tam najbardziej podobała się z 2004.

W jednym ES pedałują, w drugim Radwańska, więc trzeba śledzić 3 mecze jednocześnie na stremach. Świetny jest ten plan gier...

Właśnie się podpaliłem, że będzie miłe otwarcie na ES2 z Serbką w roli głównej, a tu Aga. Pomijając moje sympatie to spotkanie Ivanovic z Cibulkovą zapowiada się ciekawie i powinno być pokazane. Co do tablicy wyników też mi się nie widzi, ale nic z tym nie zrobimy. Dobrze. że strona USO jest w miarę ok.

Paire jest dziś zmobilizowany i pokazuje co znaczy Nishikori w starciu z ofensywnym tenisem. Japończyk w top4 to nieporozumienie.

Pewnie tak to się nie skończy, ale dobrze, żeby Nishikori się ogarnął, bo Djoković poleci na totalnej autostradzie do finału.

Paire jest dziś zmobilizowany i pokazuje co znaczy Nishikori w starciu z ofensywnym tenisem. Japończyk w top4 to nieporozumienie.

Są trzy sety do rozegrania, ma jeszcze czas Kei. Nie przesadzajmy też z tym nieporozumieniem. Ma na koncie finał Szlema i Masters oraz 10 wygranych imprez innej rangi. Obecnie w sam raz na top 4, czy to się komuś podoba czy nie.
