Jo Wilfried Tsonga withdraws from Indian Wells Masters
French tennis star Jo Wilfried Tsonga has withdrawn from the Indian Wells Masters due to a health concern, per Eurosport France. The Frenchman has a health issue, which affects him on long journeys. The Indian Wells Masters is due to take place from March 07-17.
Tsonga, 33, has played in the Indian Wells main draw nine times so far in his career. The former world No. 5 failed to make it past the Indian Wells qualifying event in 2005 but debuted in the main draw of the opening Masters 1000 event of the season three years later.
Tsonga, now ranked at No. 140 in the world, made the quarter-finals at the Indian Wells event in 2013 and 2016. A knee injury forced former world No. 5 Tsonga to miss Indian Wells a year ago. In his last Indian Wells appearance, the Frenchman lost to Italian Fabio Fognini in the second round two years ago.
Tsonga last played at this week's ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament. 2017 Rotterdam champion Tsonga suffered a quarter-final loss to rising Russian star Daniil Medvedev on Friday. However, Tsonga is set to play at the next week's Open 23 Provence.
The 33-year-old has played in the Marseille main draw eight times so far in his career. Tsonga has had lots of success throughout his career in Marseille. The Frenchman made it all the way at the Marseille event in 2009, 2013 and 2017, as well as ended runner-up at the tournament in 2014.
The 33-year-old also made the semi-finals at the French ATP 250 event in 2010 and 2012.
