The eighth seeds, who picked up the Australian Open title in January, defeated third seeds Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 on Wednesday evening at The O2 in London. They are now 2-0 in Group A round-robin matches.
Kubot and Lindstedt qualified as a result of the victory, following three-time former titlists Bob and Mike Bryan’s Match tie-break victory over Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau earlier in the day.
Kubot and Lindstedt have each qualified on two previous occasions for the season finale — Kubot in 2009-10 (w/Marach) and Lindstedt in 2011-12 (w/Tecau). Yet, until today, neither player had advanced beyond the round robin stage.
The Polish-Swedish team jumped into a 2-0 lead, but could not convert two set point opportunities at 5-3, when Peya served. Lindstedt kept his cool, serving out the 38-minute set to love with an ace. The duo had won 15 of their 16 first service points and hit four aces in the opener.
Peya and Soares took a 3-0 lead in the second set, having broke Lindstedt to 30 in the second game. Kubot and Lindstedt bounced back in the Match tie-break, winning the first five points. The match lasted 84 minutes.
Peya and Soares, who beat Rojer and Tecau 6-3, 3-6, 12-10 in their first match on Monday, are now 1-1 in Group A. They have a 42-24 match record on the season.
