Top seeds build momentum ahead of US Open
Top seeds Lukasz Kubot/Marcelo Melo went two-for-two on Friday at the Winston-Salem Open to win their first ATP Tour team title of 2019. The Polish-Brazilian pairing beat American wild cards Nicholas Monroe/Tennys Sandgren 6-7(6), 6-1, 10-3 on Friday evening to claim the ATP 250 championship, their 13th doubles crown together.
Kubot/Melo dismissed Brits Jamie Murray/Neal Skupski 6-2, 6-3 earlier in the day. Both doubles semi-finals were postponed until Friday because of rain on Thursday.
"We played very good since the first match. We're of course very happy with the title. We were looking for this title during the year, and we missed a couple opportunities along the way. But we're so happy to play as we played this tournament," Melo said.

Kubot/Melo, four-time titlists together in 2018, were 0-2 in title matches this season (Indian Wells, Halle) coming into the final. But the veteran pairing saved all five break points faced in the second set and ran away with the Match Tie-break.
The two have won at least one title together for the past five years. Melo, who won his 33rd doubles title, extended his title streak to 13 consecutive years, and Kubot, with his 25th doubles title, extended his own streak to eight consecutive years. The Pole has also won a doubles title in 10 of the past 11 years.
They'll receive 250 ATP Doubles Rankings points and split $40,600 in prize money.
"I think the level was very high today," Kubot said. "We used our chances. We had a great four matches here."
Monroe/Sandgren were playing in their second tournament together after falling in the first round of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati last week. They beat Belgians Sander Gille/Joran Vliegen 7-6(1), 6-4 to reach the title match. The Americans will receive 150 ATP Doubles Rankings points and split $20,800 in prize money.

Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo have become the second doubles team to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals, to be held at The O2 in London from 10-17 November. The Polish-Brazilian team secured their place as a result of advancing on Friday to the Rolex Shanghai Masters semi-finals.

Kubot and Melo have captured one ATP Tour title in 2019 at the Winston-Salem Open (d. Monroe-Sandgren), with runner-up finishes at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells (l. to Mektic/Zeballos), the Gerry Weber Open in Halle (l. to Klaasen/Venus) and at last week’s China Open in Beijing (l. to Dodig/Polasek). The pair has an 11-8 overall record in tour-level finals. They have been highly consistent at all six ATP Masters 1000 tournaments they have contested this year, reaching the semi-finals (or better) each time.

Melo has now qualified for the prestigious season finale for the seventh straight year (since 2013). Five years ago, the Brazilian advanced to the final in London with Ivan Dodig (l. to Bryans). Kubot has competed at The O2 in London on five occasions (2009-10, 2014, 2017-2018). In November 2017, together with Melo, they finished as the year-end No. 1 team and advanced to the championship match (l. to Kontinen/Peers).

Second seeds to meet Pavic/Soares in final

Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo snapped Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin’s six-match win streak on Saturday, beating the Frenchmen 6-2, 6-4 to advance to their third straight championship match at the Rolex Shanghai Masters.

The Polish-Brazilian team won 85 per cent of first-serve points (28/33) and did not face a break point during the 67-minute encounter against the Tokyo titlists. Kubot and Melo are now one win away from becoming the first team to win back-to-back titles in tournament history.

After falling to Henri Kontinen and John Peers in the 2017 championship match, the second seeds claimed their maiden Shanghai trophy as a team last year following a straight-sets victory against Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares. Melo will be attempting to claim his fourth Shanghai crown, having also lifted the trophy in 2013 (w/Dodig) and 2015 (w/Klaasen).

Kubot and Melo will face eighth seeds Mate Pavic and Soares for the title. Pavic and Soares overcame Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski 7-5, 6-4 in 85 minutes to reach their first final as a team.

Pavic and Soares began their partnership at the Fever-Tree Championships in June and have compiled an 11-7 record on the ATP Tour. The Croatian-Brazilian pairing is yet to drop a set in Shanghai this week.

Shape-shifting is beyond the powers of any tennis players, but Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo’s patterns and strategies are always evolving, with the Pole and the Brazilian forever innovating and looking for fresh ways of competing. Anything to avoid becoming predictable on the doubles court.

Every time they play a match at the Nitto ATP Finals this week, they will be doing something different from their last appearance. Sometimes that change will be obvious and sometimes it will be subtle. But you can be sure that they will be mixing it up. At this elite level, there are few secrets in doubles – everyone seems to know how every other team plays, and what their strengths and weaknesses are, and what they tend to do on big points. In the modern tennis world, where you can do your homework on rivals by looking at data and video, it’s increasingly hard to find an edge. But, perhaps more than any other pair who have made it to Greenwich, Kubot and Melo try to be creative and surprise their opponents.

“I feel as though the most important thing is to keep improving and to keep changing,” Melo has said. “We can’t be playing the same way always because then the other teams will know what we’re going to do.” As Kubot said: “We know our patterns and our opponents know our patterns, so we still look forward to improving our games every day and trying to be better. Every time we sit down and talk, we always look for ways to improve and look for something new we can add to our games.”

In this effort to stay unpredictable, it helps that Kubot and Melo don’t have the same individual styles. “I think we play differently. I have one way to play and he has another,” Melo said. “We are always changing. We don’t play the same way. We can change a lot during matches.”

Kubot has spoken of his admiration for how Melo – who is 6’8”, or 2.03 metres, tall, with ambitions of becoming the tallest champion in this tournament’s history – can react so quickly at the net. “I think Marcelo has maybe the best reactions of all the players at the moment on the ATP Tour,” Kubot, who is five inches shorter at 6’3”, has said. “His reactions are very good. He’s very quick at the net. He has very good volleys. He’s a player who is made for the big shots, so he likes it when there is more pressure on the court because he likes to take the responsibility on his shoulders.”

If there is one predictable aspect of this partnership, who won the Winston-Salem title in the United States in August, it is that they keep on qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals, with this the third successive year that they have made the cut for the season finale. Their best result at The O2 came in 2017 when they were the runners-up.

Kiedy równo rok temu Agnieszka Radwańska ogłaszała zakończenie wspaniałej kariery, wiele osób już kopało grób polskiemu tenisowi. Z różnych stron słychać było głosy, że teraz czeka nas coś w stylu „klątwy Bońka” i wiele lat posuchy. Tymczasem najpierw finały turniejów WTA zaliczyły Iga Świątek i Katarzyna Kawa, a potem w odstępie kilku godzin po tytuł sięgnęli Magda Linette oraz Hubert Hurkacz. Teraz wspaniałą kropkę nad tym imponującym „i” może postawić Łukasz Kubot. Polak, w parze z Marcelo Melo, właśnie zameldował się w półfinale kończącego sezon turnieju mistrzów w Londynie.


Kubot z brazylijskim partnerem występuje od końcówki sezonu 2015. W 2016 roku wygrali turniej w Wiedniu, rok później byli najlepszą parą świata, triumfowali na Wimbledonie i w pięciu innych imprezach ATP, w tym trzech z serii ATP Masters. W poprzednim sezonie dołożyli kolejne cztery triumfy. Na tym tle tylko jeden wygrany turniej w tym roku (Winston-Salem) wygląda dość ubogo. Trzeba jednak pamiętać, że było także aż pięć przegranych finałów, w tym w wielkich imprezach w Szanghaju i Indian Wells. Awans do turnieju mistrzów był dla Kubota i Melo oczywistą oczywistością.

Dla Kubota to już szósty występ w kończącej sezon imprezie, co ważne – trzeci z rzędu. Debiutował tam 10 lat temu, w parze z Oliverem Marachem i z pewnością nie wspomina tego debiutu zbyt miło. Źle zagrał? Wręcz przeciwnie. Rzecz w tym, że dwie wygrane z wyżej notowanymi rywalami i porażka z numerem jeden na świecie nie dały awansu do półfinału. Tabela grupowa ułożyła się tak pechowo, że polsko-austriackiej parze zabrakło kilku punktów do pozostania w grze. Rok później znów skończyło się na fazie grupowej, tym razem po dwóch porażkach. Polak wrócił na turniej mistrzów cztery lata później, z Robertem Lindstedem. Panowie zanotowali komplet zwycięstw w grupie, a potem minimalnie przegrali w półfinale. Z kim? Z Ivanem Dodigiem i… Marcelo Melo. Z tym samym Melo, już po tej samej stronie siatki, Polak zagrał w Londynie w 2017 roku. Dwie wygrane w grupie, wygrana w półfinale i niespodziewanie przegrany finał z Kontinenem i Peersem. Kończąc tę wyliczankę: rok temu polsko-brazylijski team zaliczył występ bez historii i po fazie grupowej wrócił do domu.

Teraz? Zaczęło się od wygranej z Dodigiem i Polaskiem, potem przyszła porażka z Klaasenem i Venusem. Dziś sprawa była prosta: wygrany meczu Kubot/Melo – Ram/Salisbury awansuje do półfinału, przegrany może pakować manatki. Stawka była wysoka, więc nikogo nie zdziwił fakt, że mecz był wyjątkowo zacięty. Kubot i Melo przegrali pierwszą partię po tie-breaku, w drugiej wygrali 6:4. O wszystkim decydował super tie-break, rozgrywany do 10 punktów. Przewaga polski-brazylijskiego duetu szybko rosła, w pewnym momencie było 9:4, co oznaczało pięć piłek meczowych. Przez chwilę zrobiło się nerwowo, bo rywale wiedzieli, o co toczy się gra i nie zamierzali odpuszczać. Obronili pierwszą piłkę meczową, drugą, trzecią… i tyle. Przy czwartej już nic nie mogli zrobić.

Kubot w szóstym występie w ATP Finals po raz trzeci wychodzi z grupy. Ba, jeśli chodzi o scenariusze jego startów w kończącej sezon imprezie, to były już odpadnięcia w grupie, przegrany półfinał i przegrany finał. Do kompletu brakuje już tylko jednego? To co, Łukasz, do sześciu razy sztuka? Na razie Polak w Londynie zarobił coś koło 350 tysięcy złotych. Gdyby udało mu się wygrać cały turniej, licznik urośnie do mniej więcej 750. Słowem: jest o co grać.

ATP Cup: How Much Competing For Poland Means For Kubot

Former doubles World No. 1 set to lead Team Poland in Sydney
Lukasz Kubot made Polish history in 2018 when he became the first Polish man to reach World No. 1 in any discipline, doing so in the ATP Doubles Rankings. Kubot, who received the Gold Cross of Merit from Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski in July 2013, has long paved the way for his country, and he will try to do so again in January at the inaugural ATP Cup.

Before Kubot leads Poland in Group E, to be contested in Sydney, he speaks to ATPTour.com about which players from his country he looked up to, what he loves about Poland and more.

Which Polish players did you watch when you were growing up?
Well, of course, the inspiration was Wojtek Fibak, who is our famous former Top 10 singles player and Top 10 doubles player. The best moments of his career were in the late ‘80s, so he was an inspiration. We have contact today, so I learned a lot from him.

Besides this, there were a lot like Bartlomiej Dabrowski, who has the best record in Davis Cup ties, and also Krystian Pfeiffer. [These were] players I was always looking at and learning a lot from and I also had the opportunity to practise with them when I was younger.

If you could pick one stroke from any of your ATP Cup teammates and add it to your game, what stroke would you take?
I would take the serve of Hubert Hurkacz. Besides that, maybe also his backhand and the fighting and footwork of Kamil Majchrzak.

What are three things you love about Poland?
Everything. I think about the Polish food. The kitchen is very special and very heavy, I have to say. It is always great. Our Pope, John Paul II, was always making all the people together. It was very important for our country. Maybe the people as well, communication and supporting together.

Which three native Australian animals come to mind first?
First, of course, [is the] kangaroo, then the koala. What else? Is kiwi New Zealand? I just have these two.

What do you like most about Australia?
I like the weather, always. When you come back from Europe, down under there is always guaranteed weather. I have a lot of friends there, especially from Sydney where we stay and visit my friends. We stay together as a kind of Polish community. This is a very special thing.

Of course, visiting the cities like Sydney, the opera is always nice to come back there. Especially spending the New Year’s there is great, there are always positive vibes.

What team sports did you play as kid and can you talk about the happy memories of playing on a team?
I was playing a lot of football or soccer and a little bit of basketball. Soccer was very popular; we actually played in our neighbourhood with all the young boys growing up. We were spending most of our time on the tennis court, the basketball court or the soccer field.

What are your earliest memories of playing tennis in Poland?
I started like most of the players, hitting [against] the wall, just to hit and to feel. There was not much happening in the small city where I grew up. We had a coach with a group of players and we started to hit the balls. I was hitting [against] the wall for a long time… I remember a lot of kids with one or two courts, hitting the balls over the net with one or two coaches.

What will be the most fun part about playing ATP Cup?
Playing for the country. For sure, there is going to be a team atmosphere, sharing lockers and supporting your country is always very nice. For sure, we are guaranteed three matches and it is going to be a very good preparation for the Australian Open, which is great.

W styczniu Polska weźmie w pierwszej edycji ATP Cup. W naszej ekipie nie zabraknie Łukasza Kubota, jedynego Polaka, który został liderem rankingu w jednej z tenisowych konkurencji. Lubinianin przed startem sezonu odpowiedział na pytania dotyczące nie tylko tenisa.

Kubot wymienił to, co najbardziej kocha w Polsce. - Myślę o polskim jedzeniu. Nasza kuchnia jest wyjątkowa, ale i bardzo ciężka. Zawsze jest świetna. Nasz papież, Jan Paweł II, potrafił jednoczyć wszystkich ludzi. To było dla naszego kraju bardzo ważne. Mogę jeszcze wymienić generalnie ludzi, którzy potrafią się wzajemnie mobilizować i wspierać - mówił Polak dla atptour.com.

Najlepsze chwile w jego karierze miały miejsce pod koniec lat 80. Mamy ze sobą kontakt, wiele się od niego nauczyłem - stwierdził Kubot. - Poza tym było wielu, jak choćby Bartłomiej Dąbrowski, który jest naszym rekordzistą w Pucharze Davisa, a także Krystian Pfeiffer. To byli tenisiści, którym zawsze się przyglądałem i wiele się od nich czerpałem. Miałem okazję trenować z nimi, gdy byłem młodszy - dodał lubinianin.

Kubot chciałby mieć serwis Huberta Hurkacza. - Może także jego bekhend, a do tego waleczność i pracę nóg Kamila Majchrzaka - mówił deblowy mistrz Australian Open 2014 i Wimbledonu 2017, który jako dziecko grał w piłkę nożną i koszykówkę. Wspominał też swoje początki związane z tenisem. - Zaczynałem jak większość, uderzając piłkę o ściankę, aby to poczuć. W małym mieście, w którym dorastałem, niewiele się działo. Mieliśmy trenera, który zajmował się grupą osób i uderzaliśmy piłkę, długo o ściankę. Pamiętam dużo dzieci na jednym czy dwóch kortach, przebijających nad siatką, z jednym czy dwoma trenerami - stwierdził Kubot.

Zapytany o australijskie zwierzęta, które przychodzą mu do głowy jako pierwsze, wymienił kangura i koalę. - Bo kiwi to Nowa Zelandia? Zawsze podoba mi się pogoda w Australii. Po przyjeździe z Europy, dobre warunki zawsze są tutaj gwarantowane. Mam wielu przyjaciół, szczególnie w Sydney, gdzie się zatrzymujemy i odwiedzamy ludzi. Pozostajemy razem jako rodzaj polskiej społeczności. To jest wyjątkowa rzecz - mówił Polak.

Kubot nie może doczekać się występu w pierwszej edycji ATP Cup. Polska (w drużynie są Hurkacz, Kamil Majchrzak, Kubot, Kacper Żuk i Wojciech Marek) rywalizować będzie w Sydney w Grupie E. Santiago Gonzalez and Ken Skupski played just one tournament together before arriving in Melbourne. But the Mexican-Briton duo has certainly made its mark on the Australian Open.

Gonzalez and Skupski stunned No. 2 seeds Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo 7-5, 7-6(4) on Saturday to reach the third round after one hour and 35 minutes. They were not broken in the match, putting 84 per cent of their first serves in play to put pressure on the favourites.

Gonzalez and Skupski lost in the first round of their team debut at last week's ASB Classic. They will now face No. 16 seeds Austin Krajicek and Franko Skugor, the duo that beat them in Auckland.

Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey saved four match points to overcome Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(14-12). The Americans found themselves one point from elimination on three occasions at 4-5 in the decider and saved a fourth match point at 10/11 in the Match Tie-break, before converting their seventh match point to move into the third round.

Querrey and Johnson won 76 per cent of first-serve points (70/92) throughout the two-hour, 37-minute contest and will meet Alexander Bublik and Mikhail Kukushkin for a spot in the quarter-finals. Bublik and Kukushkin reached the third round with a 6-7(3), 6-4, 7-5 triumph against wild cards Ji Sung Nam and Min-Kyu Song. The Kazakhs upset 2019 Roland Garros champions Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies in the first round.

Sixth seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos struck 45 winners to beat Pablo Cuevas and Guido Pella 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. The Spanish-Argentine pairing will next face 11th seeds Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury, who needed just 59 minutes to move past Tennys Sandgren and Jackson Withrow 6-3, 6-3.

Henri Kontinen and Jan-Lennard Struff came from a set down to defeat 15th seeds Maximo Gonzalez and Fabrice Martin 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Kontinen and Struff will meet Simone Bolelli and Benoit Paire, who beat defending champions Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut, in the third round.
