College Star Norrie Makes Pro Breakthrough

Brit reaches first ATP Challenger Tour final in Aptos

This week’s $100,000 ATP Challenger Tour event in Aptos, California, has been full of upsets, but college tennis star Cameron Norrie has been the one to take full advantage of it.

The 20-year-old from Great Britain came through qualifying to reach his first ATP Challenger Tour final on Saturday, ousting American and fellow qualifier Eric Quigley, 3-6 6-2, 6-4. Norrie’s run is even more impressive because he had never reached a Challenger quarter-final prior to this week.

“It means a lot. It’s a lot of money and [Emirates ATP Rankings] points, but mainly it’s just about improving your game,” said Norrie. “I’ve always known that I can compete with these guys and it’s nice to have a result that proves that.”

Norrie peaked at No. 10 in the ITF Junior Rankings in 2013 before deciding to play college tennis at Texas Christian University. He compiled a 28-8 record this past season and established himself as one of the top college players in the U.S. But Norrie has also continued to play pro events when he can and has been competing all summer.

“When you’re around the pro guys, you’re going to start adapting to their game a little more,” said Norrie. “I’ve learned a lot from it. It’s a big difference from college matches because they have a little bit more time and focus on their game.”

Norrie is guaranteed to move to around No. 305 in the Emirates ATP Rankings on Monday, while a win will put him around No. 260. He admitted his current success means he may consider taking a semester off from college tennis in order to focus on the ATP Challenger Tour, but is making the most of his week in Aptos for now.

“This tournament has been great. I really like the organisation and they set me up with housing this week,” said Norrie. “I’m playing my best tennis now, so I just want to keep it going for one more match.”

Norrie is the third player from Great Britain to win the Binghamton title, joining 2005 champ Andy Murray and 2015 titlist Kyle Edmund. The win also moves to the nation to 4-0 in Challenger finals this year, with Aljaz Bedene earning three titles from three finals.

Norrie, who rises 76 spots to a career-high No. 199 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, spoke about his breakthrough week...

You got broken five straight games and were down 1-4 0/30. Where's your head at that moment?
I was completely down on myself. I turned to my coach Facu (Facundo Lugones) and was thinking that I just couldn't do it. He quickly told me to fight and dig deep. Treat it like another college tennis match. I've had so many tight matches in college where I've fought back. I tried to get my serve in and absolutely battle. I felt like there was no one mentally tougher than me this week. At 4-1 down, I started putting a little more spin on my first serve and it fell in. I was serving better and better and found a lot more confidence from that. I was winning the longer rallies and managed to get over the line. I'm really, really happy to get my first title.

He was trying to pull you off the court with his cross-court backhand and it was hard for you to find a rhythm. It looked like you were able to control more points as the third set went on. What changed?
I felt like he stepped off the gas a little bit and I just stayed tough and waited for my moments. It was similar to my match on Saturday against Christian [Harrison]. I waited for the right balls and used my inside-out forehand really well at the end to keep him moving. All credit to him for playing a great match, but I'm really pleased with how I was mentally after getting broken those five straight games.

Heck of a finishing point too. [33-shot rally on match point]
Yeah, I was pretty tired and he dropped a couple balls short. I stepped in a little bit and managed to pull the trigger on the last one (a forehand winner down the line) and hit my spot where I wanted to hit it. I've been working countless hours with my coaches Devin and Facu on that ball. That is, to aim short a little bit. He calls it 'the swirler'. That's what happened on that last ball. It's just a really great feeling to win the title this week and I don't think I've ever felt like that.

On top of that, you're into the Top 200 and the US Open qualifying. That has to be a load off your mind.
I'm so pumped for that. I got some messages from some coaches and one [Mark Hilton] said to me to not be satisfied yet. It's just a great opportunity and I had everything to gain today. I'm really happy and looking forward to the US Open.

You've had the opportunity to train with Andy Murray. What have you learned from him?
I've watched Murray this summer and he's an absolute beast. He doesn't waste a point and doesn't waste a ball. He's 100 per cent all the time. I had one really good practice with him at Wimbledon, right before Eastbourne, and you can learn a lot from his professionalism and mentality to always get better.

And look at Jordan Thompson this week. He wasn't playing his best tennis, but he's just so mentally tough and he competes like an animal. That's what my coach Facu said to me this week. Jordan is going to be mentally tough, but you need to be tougher than him. Thommo and Andy are two great role models.

It's a quick turnaround going to Lexington, but how do you celebrate this?
My coach and I are going to New York City for the night and maybe go out to dinner. I fly from LaGuardia Airport to Lexington on Monday. It will be nice to spend the night there and take it easy.
In tennis, you have to back up great results so I'll be all in, in Lexington. I'll try to keep the momentum going.

Cameron Norrie is a man on a mission this week at US Open qualifying. The Brit has not dropped a set en route to the final round and is now one win from making his US Open debut.

At No. 226 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, Norrie is showing he belongs among the game's best. But this is far from a surprise considering his near-perfect run of form leading up to the last Grand Slam of the year.

Norrie is one of many players carrying successful summer hard-court swings on the ATP Challenger Tour into Flushing Meadows. A maiden title in nearby Binghamton and subsequent semi-final finish in Lexington have fueled the former Texas Christian University standout.

"I beat some great players in Binghamton and it ensured me that I'm at this level," Norrie told ATPWorldTour.com. "I just got out of college at the start of the summer and it's nice to know I can play with these boys. I played in Binghamton and Lexington which were really hot conditions, so it's perfect preparation. I feel in good shape to get through."

With the competition as fierce as ever, the ATP Challenger Tour demands countless hours on the court and in the gym, week in and week out. Any small reprieve is a welcome one for players looking to end their season on a high note.

For those competing at the Tiburon Challenger presented by Wells Fargo in California, that reprieve wasn’t so small – in fact, it was quite large... and came in the form of a 98-foot yacht. Several players from the picturesque ATP Challenger Tour event were treated to a luxurious cruise on the San Francisco Bay, courtesy of a generous patron of the tournament’s Tiburon Peninsula Club.

With views of the Tiburon and San Francisco shorelines, the Golden Gate Bridge, Angel Island and Alcatraz, a group of players including Cameron Norrie, Sam Groth, Alejandro Gonzalez, Luke Bambridge, Brydan Klein and David O'Hare were treated to something a little extra at the Tiburon Challenger.

“On Monday, one of the ladies here at the club took us out on what was something like a $15 million boat,” said Norrie, who will compete in Sunday’s title match versus Tennys Sandgren.

“We went under the Golden Gate Bridge and it was a nice opportunity to see the area. We had free food and dinner and it was a great experience. You don't see that too often on the Challenger level.”

The $100,000 Challenger in Tiburon has always been a marquee destination for players on the ATP Challenger Tour. Located on hills replete with a stunning vista of one of America’s most vibrant coastal municipalities, the tournament is currently in its 11th edition, having first hosted the event in 2003.

Past champions include current and former Top 20 players Sam Querrey (2014), Jack Sock (2012) and Ivo Karlovic (2011).

"This tournament has been unbelievable,” remarked Norrie. “They've been great to me. It's probably one of the best Challengers I've played in. The community is great and the atmosphere at each match too."

Norrie Capitalising On Challenger Success

Former college star riding momentum of summer breakthrough

On Aug. 21, classes started at Texas Christian University, where Cameron Norrie was a three-time All-American. But that day, Norrie, who turned professional after the team’s spring season, was far away from Texas. The 22 year old was in New York preparing for the US Open, where he would qualify and win his first Grand Slam main draw match.

“I would much rather be at the US Open than be at syllabus week,” Norrie laughed. “I think that a lot of people would be pretty happy for me that I was there and not at school anymore.”

Less than four months ago, Norrie was the No. 1-ranked college player in the country as a junior. Now, he is taking the professional circuit by storm, especially making an impression on the ATP Challenger Tour. The left-hander won his maiden title in Binghamton, New York, followed by a semi-final run in Lexington, Kentucky, and beat second-seeded Tennys Sandgren this week in Cary, North Carolina, to earn a spot in the quarter-finals.

“I knew I had the level, but I didn’t know how quickly I was going to do this well,” Norrie admitted. “I know tennis is a real tough sport so I’ve just kind of taken advantage of the confidence and being able to back up my wins with more wins. So it’s going really well for me right now and I’m just enjoying the process.”

It is easy to gain confidence when you come from 1-4, 0/30 down in the deciding set of a final like Norrie did in Binghamton this July against World No. 86 Jordan Thompson to claim his first ATP Challenger Tour trophy. That performance guaranteed Norrie’s spot in US Open Qualifying.

“It was a great experience. I was pretty lucky to be there in the first place,” said Norrie of his trip to the season’s final Grand Slam. “I couldn’t believe I was actually in the second round of the US Open...I can use the experience for next year and so I can get better and hopefully I can make the third round next year. But I was just really satisfied with how I’m doing and it’s just really a sick moment in my life.”

In just a few months, Norrie went from college tennis to playing ATP World Tour stars Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at Wimbledon, where Norrie entered with a wild card, and eventual semi-finalist Pablo Carreno Busta in the second round of the US Open.

“I got a little bit anxious and I was pretty nervous for the match so there were a lot of things I could learn from,” said Norrie, who flew his best friend to New York for the match, of playing Carreño Busta. “I didn’t think it was going to happen that quickly, so I’m happy. I’m very fond of those two weeks in New York.”

While Norrie is ecstatic with his strong summer, which will propel him back into the Top 200 of the Emirates ATP Rankings next week, he knows that he has to maintain his focus and continue to work hard at the Challenger level. Norrie has been playing well at the Atlantic Tire Championships this week, where he will play another former No.1-ranked college player in Mackenzie McDonald (UCLA) on Friday.

“This is what you have to do to get up there,” said Norrie of playing Challengers to work his way to the top of the ATP World Tour. “It’s kind of nice to use the US Open as a base and to try to work hard until you’re only playing those level tournaments.”

Norrie was born in South Africa, moved to New Zealand at three years old, spent three years in London as a teen and now is making his training base at his old school, TCU, in Texas. So while he has grown up all over the world, Norrie will get to continue trekking the globe if he keeps up his strong play.

“I feel like I’m learning from each week and I know there’s going to be difficult times out there,” Norrie said. “I just need to be ready for those and just try and enjoy my tennis life. It’s pretty lucky to be able to play tennis for a living so I’m pretty grateful for that.”

Cameron Norrie entered the final week of July at No. 275 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. What the Brit has done since is nothing short of remarkable. Norrie clinched his second ATP Challenger Tour crown on Sunday in Tiburon, soaring to a career-high No. 136. He has now won 21 of his last 25 matches, including a 6-2, 6-3 win over Tennys Sandgren for the title. The former Texas Christian University standout had won his maiden title in Binghamton two months ago.

A second trophy for you, Cam. Compare where you are now to where you were before Binghamton.
Ranking wise, I feel I am making improvements. I am coming forward a bit more and my volleys have gotten better. I just feel way more confident now and there's a place in the Top 100 that I have a very good chance of making. I'm enjoying my tennis and working to improve every day. I'm in a good place mentally.

On a grander scale, how is your body holding up in doing this week in and week out?
My body is perfect. It's been a physical week and it's good shape. I haven't really given myself a chance to test it mentally because I haven't played too many tournaments in a row. In the grass-court season, I did it slightly but it's different because they weren't many Challengers. I'm going to see how these tournaments pan out and I know I'm going to go away mentally at some point, but I'll test it and see how far I can go while sustaining my level. It will be a good learning curve over the next couple of tournaments and going into the indoor swing as well. I'm looking forward to that.

In the Tiburon final, you've known that Tennys has the ability to track down many balls. It looked like he was struggling with depth early and you were being more aggressive. Then, it switched early in the second set. What adjustments did you have to make?
At the end of the first and start of the second, I was winning the majority of the longer rallies. That's what [coach] Facu [Lugones] told me. Tennys enjoys those long points and that's how he wins most of his matches. He started to overpress slightly and that's how I broke him. At the start of the second, he came at me very aggressively and I managed to absorb his pace and battle through a couple of tough service games. It was a good match and very clean for me.

It looked like a routine scoreline, but it was far from it. What happened with all those double faults? You had six in two games.
I have no idea where that came from. My second serve completely went away there. I tightened up a little bit and started thinking about the future and about winning the tournament. I need to stay in the present and relax a little bit. I've hit millions of second serves in my life. I know I can do it, but I managed to bring it back mentally. I didn't hit any more at the end of the match. I've been struggling with double faults all tournament, but I managed to bring it back each time. I'm really proud with where my focus is.

What did you learn about going from Binghamton to Lexington in July, in terms of how you comport yourself the week after winning a Challenger?
It's going to be tough and I've played a lot of matches. In Lexington, I didn't play a great match right after winning the title, so I know what to expect now. I just want to take this momentum into the next tournament. I know not to panic. In my first match in Lexington I was getting down on myself, so I know to just relax and focus on my game and let things happen. There's going to be ups and downs.

What are you doing to celebrate?
I'm going to San Francisco with one of my good friends, one of my old teammates at TCU. Then, I'm leaving for [the Challenger in] Stockton. I'll enjoy it now and get back on the road to prepare for my next match. Not much celebrating, but hopefully after the next tournament.
