Goffin wygrywa turniej pokazowy w Caen!
W finale ograł Gasqueta 76 63 - miałem okazję obejrzeć spory fragment meczu i przyznam, że jestem bardzo zadowolony - Belg to jeden z moich ulubionych zawodników i dziś zaprezentował się rewelacyjnie. Masa winnerów, zabójcze kontr z obu skrzydeł, dużo długich wymian crossowych - nie sposób gościa nie lubić, gra tenis naprawdę piękny dla oka. Bałem się, że ta bądź co bądź poważna kontuzja (złamany nadgarstek) odbije się na jego grze, ale wszystko wygląda jak należy. Z taką grą powinien bez problemu wygrać turniej w Noumei.
Co do Gasqueta - formy brak, bo i szczerze mówiąc nie ma się co oszukiwać, że jest tenisistą gorszym od Goffina. Dziś jednak psuł zaskakująco dużo i słabo wyglądał pod względem kondycyjnym.

David Goffin jest już gotowy do powrotu na kort po kontuzji nadgarstka. Belg musiał poddać się operacji, przez którą przedwcześnie zakończył poprzedni sezon.

Po wielkoszlemowym US Open David Goffin poddał się operacji nadgarstka. W rozmowie z portalem DHnet.be belgijski tenisista poinformował, że po kontuzji nie już śladu i jest już w pełni gotowy, by wrócić do zawodowych rozgrywek: - To bardzo pocieszająca wiadomość. Nie czuję już żadnego bólu i nie mam najmniejszego lęku przed uderzaniem piłki. Jestem spragniony gry po tak długim okresie bezczynności - powiedział 23-latek z Liège.

Goffin przyznał, że w trakcie rehabilitacji intensywnie pracował nad przygotowaniem fizycznym. - Zwykle, w czasie sezonu, nie mamy czasu pracować nad kondycją. Nagle pojawiła się okazja, by to zrobić dokładnie. Trenowałem naprawdę ostro, czuję to w kościach, ale też wiem, że dzięki temu będę znakomicie przygotowany fizycznie.

Belg, który wyrzucił Kubota z ubiegłorocznego Rolanda Garrosa, przedstawił swoje najbliższe plany startowe: - Zagrałem w pokazówce w Arlon przeciw Christophe'owi Rochusowi. Teraz przyjąłem zaproszenia na turniej w Caen, gdzie zmierzę się z czołowymi francuskimi tenisistami. Następnie, 25 grudnia, wyruszę do Nowej Kaledonii na turniej w Noumei. Postanowiłem tam zagrać, ponieważ będę rozstawiony, dzięki czemu powinienem rozegrać kilka spotkań w singlu oraz deblu, a tego bardzo mi obecnie brakuje. - wyjaśnił.

Kontuzja, przez którą Goffin musiał przedwcześnie zakończyć sezon, spowodowała, że wypadł z czołowej "100'' rankingu ATP. Goffin, the champion last week in Scheveningen, has not dropped a set during his 10-match win streak. ”I served really well and it helped me to stay in the match until 3-3 in the first set when Nieminen began the match very aggressively. Then I stayed focused, and played a really good tie-break.

"Physically I feel good, really fit. I'm ready to continue. I don’t spend a lot of energy in my play. I play fast and move well and the conditions here were good for me."

David Goffin advanced to his first ATP World Tour final on Friday.

The wild card hit eight aces to defeat qualifier Maximo Gonzalez 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in two hours and 23 minutes to contest the championship match at the bet-at-home Cup Kitzbühel.

Since losing to Andy Murray in the Wimbledon first round on 23 June, the 23-year-old Belgian has won 19 matches in a row – winning 38 out of 39 sets – including three ATP Challenger Tour titles at Scheveningen (d. A Beck), Poznan (d. Rola) and Tampere (d. Nieminen).

"I didn't expect to be in the final this week, 19 victories in a row is unbelievable," said Goffin. "After the third Challenger in Tampere, I was a little bit tired, but I played with confidence. I came here, not knowing how I would be physically. But this week, I have played well. I am relaxed and have developed my confidence."

Goffin will next challenge fifth seed Dominic Thiem, the youngest player in the Top 50 of the Emirates ATP Rankings at 20 years of age, or 2007 champion Juan Monaco for the title.

Thiem is attempting to become the first Austrian titlist in Kitzbühel since 1993, when former World No. 1 Thomas Muster triumphed (d. J. Sanchez).

David Goffin's July surge carried over to August, claiming his maiden ATP World Tour title at the bet-at-home Cup Kitzbühel on Saturday.

Goffin rallied from an early deficit, battling past fellow young gun Dominic Thiem 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 in what was the last clay-court match on the ATP World Tour in 2014. The Belgian wild card extended his win streak to 20 straight, following a dominant July that included three consecutive ATP Challenger Tour titles in Scheveningen (d. Beck), Poznan (d. Rola) and Tampere (d. Nieminen). He won 40 of 42 sets in that span.

"It's a great day for me, to win an ATP [World Tour] 250," said Goffin. "It's just an amazing feeling right now. I don't believe it. Maybe in a few days I'll realise what happened today.

"You work so much in the fitness room and on the court for a moment like today. You play so many practices and so many matches to have this emotion, so when you win the match point you can't control it."

Doubles Final: Kontinen/Nieminen Win First Team Title

Goffin became the fifth first-time champion on the ATP World Tour this year and third in the past month, after Pablo Cuevas triumphed in Bastad and Leonardo Mayer prevailed in Hamburg. The 23 year old is also the fifth player born in the 1990s to hoist a tour-level trophy, joining Milos Raonic, Grigor Dimitrov, Bernard Tomic and Federico Delbonis.

The Rocourt native turned in a strong serving performance against Thiem, winning 67 per cent of service points, including 61 per cent on his second serve. He fired just one ace, but saved five of six break opportunities garnered by his Austrian opponent. Goffin would break the fifth seed four times en route to victory in one hour and 59 minutes.

"In the first set, Dominic was playing so heavy, so strong," added Goffin. "Then he didn't break me again. I tried to play well with my serve, be more aggressive and make him run a lot. At the end he spent a lot of energy and maybe made more mistakes."

Goffin, who takes home €77,315 and 250 Emirates ATP Rankings points, is projected to crack the Top 50 after sitting outside the Top 100 just a month ago. He is the first Belgian winner on the ATP World Tour since Steve Darcis claimed victory in Memphis six years ago.

Thiem, meanwhile, was the season's youngest finalist on the ATP World Tour at 20 years of age. He was looking to become the first homegrown champion in Kitzbühel since Thomas Muster won in 1993. The fifth seed emerges with €40,720 and 150 Emirates ATP Rankings points for his efforts.

"You have to find the right words and I hope that I managed to do that," said Thiem after talking to the home crowd after the match. "It was an amazing week for me and the crowd gave me huge support during every match.

"Of course I’m very disappointed. But I lost against an extremely strong opponent, who didn’t commit a lot of mistakes and played with a lot power."

This was your first final. What was your approach going into the match against a player also playing in his first final?
It was my first final, but I had nothing to lose because Dominic was playing so well this week. I won 19 matches in a row before the final and I had a lot of confidence. I relaxed before the match because I had nothing to lose and I gave everything.

You won the title here as a wild card. Talk about spirits during the week.
I came here after (playing) three Challengers in a row, so I was a little bit tired, but physically I was feeling fit. I played match after match and played really well from the beginning of the tournament. In the end it was an amazing week.

You've now won 20 matches in a row. Can you talk about your recent success?
I can't believe it. 20 matches in a row is just amazing. One month ago, I was playing in my first Challenger just to get some more confidence and now I won three Challengers in a row and a title in Kitzbühel. It's just an amazing week.

You reached the Round of 16 on your debut at Roland Garros in 2012. How does this compare to winning the title here.
It's two different things. It was a great tournament at the French Open, but it's not a victory. I won the title here and I can't believe I have the trophy in my hands.

You are the fifth player born in the 1990s, joining Milos Raonic, Bernard Tomic, Grigor Dimitrov and Federico Delbonis, to win an ATP World Tour title. What do you think about those young players coming up?
I think it is a great generation. Of course those guys played unbelievable this year, like Grigor in Wimbledon recently. It's a great generation coming up and I'm sure we'll win more tournaments.

Your best results have come on clay. Is that your best surface? What are the best points of your game?
Of course I played really well on clay at the French Open [Roland Garros] and now this summer, but I can play on every surface. I prefer the hard court season, but I've been playing on clay since I was very young.

Who are the people who are the most important in helping you in your career?
I changed my coach (to Thierry Van Cleemput) and it worked. We did a great job. And of course my girlfriend. She's always there. After the match I called her and she was really happy.

Who were the players you admired when you were growing up?
Roger (Federer) and Pete Sampras. Lleyton Hewitt also. Those players were my idols because they're great fighters, great men on court and great off court. They are great champions.

What are your goals for the rest of the season?
I'm going to try to stay fit for the rest of the season. I have nothing to defend because I was injured, so I'm going to try to stay fit and play some great events at the end of the year. The indoor season is a period I like.

GOFFIN CAPTURES SECOND TITLE IN METZ

The resurgent David Goffin is set to crack a new career high in the Emirates ATP Rankings after capturing his second ATP World Tour title in Metz on Sunday. The eighth-seeded Belgian defeated Joao Sousa 6-4, 6-3 in the final of the Moselle Open.

"This is very special because my family was here today," said Goffin. "That’s the advantage of playing close to home. Winning my second title feels just as good as the first one. I’m very happy."

Goffin is back up to World No. 45, having finished 2013 at No. 113, and earned a further 250 Emirates ATP Ranking points with victory in Metz. He is projected to break into the Top 35 on Monday.

The 23-year-old Goffin has won 34 of his past 36 matches, including lifting his maiden ATP World Tour trophy in Kitzbuhel in July (d. Thiem) and success at three ATP Challenger Tour titles. Victory in the Metz final marked his 50th career tour-level win. At tour-level events alone, he has compiled a record of 17-2 since falling to Andy Murray in the opening round at Wimbledon.



Goffin recorded his second win in two meetings with Sousa, following victory over the Portuguese in the US Open second round. An early break in both sets sufficed as he prevailed in 74 minutes, saving the four break points he faced and winning 81 per cent of points behind his first serve.

"I had to play aggressively today, dictate the game," said Goffin. "The tactics worked out well and I served well. I was able to focus until the end."

Goffin is the fourth player born in the 1990s to win multiple ATP World Tour titles, following in the footsteps of fellow young guns Milos Raonic (six), Grigor Dimitrov (four) and Bernard Tomic (two). Eight tournaments this season have been won by players born in the '90s.

The sixth-seeded Sousa had advanced to his third ATP World Tour final after saving four match points in his quarter-final win over Paul-Henri Mathieu. The 25 year old became the first Portuguese to win an ATP World Tour title with victory just under 12 months ago in Kuala Lumpur (d. Benneteau) and reached his second final in Bastad in July (l. to Cuevas).

"I have to congratulate David on a fantastic week," said Sousa. "Even if I lost today, it was a great week for me as well, reaching the final. I hope that I can come back next year and hopefully go one step further."
