Belgium’s Best: After ending 2017 at a career-high No. 7, David Goffin missed four weeks due to an eye injury and five weeks due to a right elbow injury last season. The top-ranked Belgian is 2-2 this year after missing the last two months of last season, and currently sits just outside the Top 20.

Third seed David Goffin reached his first ATP Tour quarter-final of the season, battling past home favourite Benoit Paire 6-2, 6-3. After a pair of early breaks, the two were back on serve in the second until Goffin won the rally of the match and broke Paire for a 5-3 lead.

The usually quiet Belgian celebrated the break with a fist pump and a shout to the crowd. He will meet Gilles Simon for the fifth time in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series, which is tied at 2-2.

“Benoit can play very well. I'm happy with the victory tonight,” Goffin said. “I need to go through those kinds of matches in order to improve match after match. Every athlete goes through moments of doubt.”

Tsitsipas will face a familiar opponent for a place in the ATP 250 final in David Goffin, who beat sixth seed and home favourite Gilles Simon 6-2, 6-4. Tsitsipas and Goffin split their four FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings, with Goffin winning most recently in August at the Western & Southern Open, an ATP Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati.

Goffin pressured Simon's serve throughout their quarter-final, converting three of his 10 break points while not facing a single break point on his own serve. "I felt well and had a good intensity. I served well too and played a very good first set. Gilles kept fighting, and it was a tough second set. I'm happy that I was able to win in two sets. I felt better and better the longer the match went on," Goffin said.

The Belgian is through to his first tour-level semi-final since Cincinnati last August, when he beat Tsitsipas in the first round. "[Tsitsipas] serves well, and he's confident at the moment. He's the top seed and the favourite in every match," Goffin said. "I like to be the outsider, and I've already beaten him. It will be a nice semi-final for the tournament."

David Goffin notched his 10th victory at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters (10-6) after 85 minutes on Monday, beating Argentine Guido Andreozzi 6-1, 6-4.

Joao Sousa, who beat Tiafoe in last year's final to make Portuguese history, will not retain his trophy. Fourth seed David Goffin ousting Sousa 6-3, 6-2 on Thursday.

"It was tough. A couple of breaks in the first but I had to stay really focused to close it and then I played really well in the second," Goffin said. "I'm really happy that as soon as I had a chance to close the match, I did it. It was not easy even if it was 6-3, 6-2."

The former World No. 7 struggled in 2018 due to injury — a freak accident in Rotterdam leading to an eye injury, and an elbow injury at the end of the season — but the Belgian will take confidence from his performance against defending champion Sousa. Goffin won 51 per cent of first-serve return points and broke the Portuguese’s serve six times en route to his 80-minute victory.

Goffin will look to avenge a three-set loss against Jaziri from Shenzhen in 2016, which is their only previous FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting. The winner could potentially face top seed and reigning Nitto ATP Finals champion Stefanos Tsitsipas, who will play home favorite Joao Domingues in the last eight.

David Goffin got the better of Stan Wawrinka in a clash between two former Top 10 stars with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory in one hour and 56 minutes. Goffin goes onto play seventh-seeded Argentine Juan Martin del Potro in the second round.

Goffin told ATPTour.com, “It was a tough one. It was not easy in the first set because he was serving really well, so I was under pressure in my service games. So I knew that just a small mistake and I could lose the first set. So it was not easy... not a lot of rallies because he was serving really well.
"So I needed to have some tough rallies to feel great, with my groundstrokes, and that's what I had at the beginning of the second with the early break and then I started to play much better, more solid. And then I showed him I was more solid, and he started to maybe go too quickly for the shot and pull the trigger maybe a little bit early. He started to miss a lot and I felt it, so I started to play much better towards the end and I used the drop shot really well.”
The first set ended with three consecutive service breaks, then Goffin lost just 12 points in the second set and it wasn’t until the opening game of the decider that Wawrinka held serve. Wawrinka, who is back in the Top 30 of the ATP Rankings (at No. 29) for the first time since 28 May 2018, reached his first ATP Masters 1000 final at the Foro Italico in 2008 (l. to Djokovic).

The 27th seed, David Goffin, defeated Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis 6-0, 6-2, 6-2 in one hour and 24 minutes. Berankis upset Goffin in a final-set tie-break earlier this year in Doha, but the Belgian now leads their FedEx ATP Head2Head series 3-1. In their first match on clay, Goffin struck 10 aces and hit 32 total winners to just 12 unforced errors.

Goffin, like Nishikori, is into the second round at Roland Garros for the fifth straight year. The 2016 quarter-finalist, who also lost just four games in his first-round victory at this year's Australian Open, will next face Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic or American Denis Kudla.
