David Goffin had his back against the wall on Colosseum at Ariake Tennis Park on Wednesday. The Belgian won the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships the last time he was here, but he found himself down a set and trailing 1/5 in the second-set tie-break against Pablo Carreno Busta, last week’s Chengdu champion.

But Goffin’s determination never wavered, riding the crowd’s support and his own rising level to save three match points in a 1-6, 7-6(8), 6-0 victory after two hours and 18 minutes to reach the second round. It’s his second win in the span of a month against the Spaniard.

“It was a little bit of magic because I was down a set and 1/5 in the tie-break,” Goffin said. “Again, I fought on this centre court and it’s another win. I’ve won a lot of matches here.”

Federer will next meet Belgian David Goffin or Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin for a place in the quarter-finals. The 13th-seeded Goffin beat France's Richard Gasquet 6-2, 6-3, and Kukushkin knocked out #NextGenATP Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic on Monday.

Goffin upset Federer in similarly quick conditions during the 2017 Nitto ATP Finals semi-finals, although Federer leads their FedEx ATP Head2Head series 9-1. The 38-year-old is going for his third Shanghai title (2014, 2017) and 29th Masters 1000 crown. He has already guaranteed his place at the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals, to be held 10-17 November at The O2 in London.

Goffin & Wawrinka Make Their Cases For London With Basel Wins

David Goffin had lost his past three matches to Marin Cilic, but the sixth-seeded Belgian continued to push towards a third appearance at the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over the Croatian on Wednesday at the Swiss Indoors Basel.

“It was a tough draw. To have [Marin] in the first round is not easy, but I knew I had to stay focussed on what I had to do. The key today was to serve well because it’s very fast indoors,” Goffin said. “I’ve always had close matches with him and it’s usually just a small difference.”

The victory keeps the 28-year-old in strong contention for one of the two remaining qualifying spots at The O2 in London, from 10-17 November. Goffin is 10th in the ATP Race to London with 2,370 points after Wednesday's win. He is 245 points behind eighth-placed Matteo Berrettini, who is currently in the Erste Bank Open quarter-finals, and could add an additional 410 points if he wins the Basel title.

Home favourite Stan Wawrinka closed out Wednesday's day session with a convincing 6-3, 6-4 win over Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas. The Swiss is in 15th place in the ATP Race to London with 1,865 points after his victory on Wednesday, but made solid inroads towards a fifth appearance at The O2 with the 150 points for his runner-up finish last week in Antwerp (l. to Murray).

“I’m really happy. I was sad to not be able to play the past two years. It was great a match from the beginning to the end. I served really well and was being super aggressive,” Wawrinka said. “It was an amazing crowd, amazing atmosphere and it’s great to play one more day here.”

Cilic’s serve is widely regarded as his biggest weapon, but it was Goffin who put on a serving clinic with 11 aces (compared to four for Cilic) and 76 per cent of first-serve points won (37/49). The Belgian was also rock-solid in return games and converted all three break points to advance in one hour and 12 minutes. He finished the day with a tidy 24 winners to just 20 unforced errors.

Goffin now holds a 4-3 lead in his FedEx ATP Head2Head rivalry with Cilic after defeating the Croatian for the first time since 2016. He’ll take on another big sever in American Reilly Opelka for a place in the quarter-finals.

Belgium’s David Goffin fell out of contention for a place at the Nitto ATP Finals when he lost 7-5, 6-3 to Dimitrov in 86 minutes. The pair contested the title match at the 2017 season finale in London. Dimitrov improved to 8-1 in his FedEx ATP Head2Head series against Goffin, who was 11th in the 2019 ATP Race To London.

Goffin On Final Prep For ATP Cup: 'It's Something Big'

The start of the ATP Cup — and with it, the ATP Tour season — is just four days away, and players in Sydney are ramping up the intensity.

Several No. 1 players were practising on the grounds of the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre on Monday, fine-tuning their games in preparation for the start of the 24-country competition. 2017 Nitto ATP Finals runner-up David Goffin and former World No. 12 Borna Coric sparred on one court, with the likes of Bulgarian No. 1 and captain Grigor Dimitrov, Polish No. 1 Hubert Hurkacz and plenty of others hitting the courts in hot and humid conditions as well.

Goffin has long been excited for this new and innovative event, saying in October, “I’m very curious to see [it], that’s why I’m very excited. On paper it looks amazing. A great place, great stadiums, it looks really good. So I’m really excited to see and hopefully it will be a really nice event.”

The Belgian No. 1 is ecstatic not just to begin his season, but to try to make his country and teammates proud.

“For me it’s nice because you play another time for your country. It’s something that I like. I always love to represent Belgium and to play for friends, for the team, for Belgium,” Goffin said on Monday. “It’s great, and especially competition like that, a big one to start the year with a new format, it’s something big and we have a lot of great matches to start the season. I think it’s great.”

One of the highlights of the ATP Cup is that there are a maximum of 750 singles ATP Ranking points at stake and a maximum of 250 ATP Doubles Ranking points available.

“First of course you play for your country, and if at the end you have some ATP points, it’s great also for your [ATP] Ranking,” Goffin said. “So you will play every match and try to win every point, every game, to win some matches for your country.”

Belgium’s first match will be on Friday at 10am local time against Moldova. Goffin will face Moldovan No. 1 Radu Albot, against whom he owns a 3-0 FedEx ATP Head2Head advantage.

After Three Warm-Ups & Marathon No. 2 Singles, Goffin Clinches Tie For Belgium

Darcis overcomes admirable effort by Moldovan No. 2
After a thrilling No. 2 singles marathon earlier in the day, World No. 11 David Goffin clinched the opening ATP Cup tie for Team Belgium in Sydney on Friday with relative ease. Goffin defeated Moldovan No. 1 Radu Albot 6-4, 6-1 after one hour and 22 minutes.

The 2017 Nitto ATP Finals runner-up now leads Albot 4-0 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series, with this being the only match that did not go to a deciding set. Goffin reached his first ATP Masters 1000 final last year in Cincinnati, and he is off to a good start to his 2020 campaign after dismissing an error-laden Albot.

"It's never easy to start the season with the first match, first team competition, the new format, with the team on the bench," Goffin said. "And the way I played, I'm very pleased, and so it's good for the next tie."

Belgium's No. 2 singles player and captain Steve Darcis gave his country the lead with a 6-4, 6-7(4), 7-5 victory against Alexander Cozbinov. But for the former World No. 38, it was was anything but easy.

On paper, Darcis had a substantial experience advantage, having won 116 tour-level matches, including three against the Top 10. World No. 818 Cozbinov had never played a tour-level match, and he is 0-3 on the ATP Challenger Tour.

But the ATP Cup provides a stage for players like Cozbinov to shine, and Darcis did that by pushing a veteran — who owns a win against Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon — to the brink in a three-hour, 10-minute marathon that featured plenty of changes in momentum. Ultimately, despite letting slip a break advantage in both the second and third sets, Darcis held his nerve.

"It was a tough match. The first one of the competition is always difficult. I didn't know too much what to expect, but Alex played a great match for the first time on a big stage," Darcis said. "Of course when you have the team behind you, when you have the crowd, it pushes you. You know you're going to fight till the end."

It made for a tough situation for Goffin, who was supporting Darcis for a set in Team Belgium's team zone. Darcis went up by a break in the second set and then a break in the third set, giving Goffin reason to warm up several times before going out for his match against Albot.

"It's never easy, especially when you stay for one set during the match of Steve, and then I went in, had [my] first warm-up, second warm-up, and third warm-up," Goffin said, cracking a smile. "Then finally I went on the court, and from the first point I had good energy, good attitude, and I served well when I needed, as well."

Darcis, the two-time ATP Tour titlist who is retiring after this year’s Australian Open, was broken three times in the first set of his match, with Cozbinov intelligently remaining patient despite Darcis' probing backhand slices. However, the Belgian surged with an around-the-net forehand for a winner to clinch the opener, leaping in celebration as his countrymen jumped out of their seats in Belgium’s team zone.

When Darcis broke to lead in the second set, it appeared his class would allow him to cruise the rest of the way. But Cozbinov was fighting for not just himself, but his country, and he relentlessly battled. Even a 4/0 lead in the second-set tie-break was not enough for Darcis, with the Moldovan winning seven consecutive points to force a decider. And although Darcis let slip a break late in the set — even with Cozbinov appearing to cramp — the Belgian finally closed out Sydney's first match of the ATP Cup.

During the match, Thomas Johansson, who is Goffin's personal coach, assisted Darcis with advice. Darcis spoke to the media and quickly returned to Ken Rosewall Arena to serve in his captain role as Goffin defeated Albot, arriving by the end of the match's first game.

"I think today the big goal is to finish 3-0. I think we were the favourite, but it's always difficult even if you are [the] favourite," Darcis said. "When it's a team competition, everybody is fighting like hell."

Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen made Darcis' wish come true, defeating Albot and Cozbinov 6-7(5), 7-6(4), 11-9 in the doubles match to make it 3-0 for Team Belgium.

Goffin On Using Video Review At ATP Cup: 'It's Quite Cool'

Almost everything went right for David Goffin on Friday at the ATP Cup as the Belgian No. 1 defeated Moldovan No. 1 Radu Albot 6-4, 6-1 to clinch the tie for Team Belgium. One of the few things that went wrong: a foot fault.
But at the ATP Cup, players have the opportunity to challenge foot faults through video review. Chair umpire Carlos Bernardes looked on a screen — which has access to whatever angles a chair umpire needs for various video reviews — to check whether or not Goffin's left foot touched the baseline. Despite not having the call overturned, Goffin enjoyed the innovation in Sydney.
“It’s quite cool,” Goffin said. “It’s something more that we have for the match, and it's good to use the technology.”
Other innovations at the inaugural ATP Cup include team zones, on-court coaching, strategy rooms and an LED-integrated umpire chair.

Goffin Stuns Nadal, Forces Deciding Doubles

David Goffin handed World No. 1 Rafael Nadal his first loss of the ATP Cup on Friday night, and now Belgium and Spain will play a deciding doubles match for a place in the semi-finals.

The World No. 11 beat Nadal for only the second time in their seven-match head-to-head series 6-4, 7-6(3), swinging freely and taking the ball early to stay on the attack against the Spaniard.

“I had to hold my nerve for a long time, which wasn't easy. At the end I am so happy for Belgium that we get to play a decisive doubles,” Goffin said.

“I knew against Rafa I had to take the ball early and take more risk. I was in the court trying to dictate and he had to find a solution. I knew I had to stick to that line and move forward and that's what I did.”

The Belgian saved his best for the tie-break as he held serve throughout, and Nadal dropped two points on serve, including at 2/5 when he double faulted to give Goffin four match points.

Now Nadal is scheduled to return to Ken Rosewall Arena with Pablo Carreno Busta (1-0) to face Belgians Sander Gille/Joran Vliegen (2-1) for the chance to face the host country Australia on Saturday night.

Nadal went 3-0 in Group B play in Perth before heading to Sydney for the Final Eight, but his wins weren't without their challenges as Japan's No. 1 singles player Yoshihito Nishioka pushed Nadal in two tight sets on Wednesday. After that, despite the tie victory being secured, Nadal opted for more match time and won his lone ATP Cup doubles match with Carreno Busta.

But Goffin had an aggressive mentality and stuck with it. He broke in the opener at 4-4 and closed it out with a service return winner. The Belgian's all-out play on return and in rallies troubled Nadal as Goffin brought a strike-first mentality and played with nothing to lose, despite needing to win to keep Belgium's ATP Cup run alive.

In the second set, the Belgian No. 1 broke to start but Nadal broke back at 3-4, feeding Goffin with loopy, heavy-topspin balls that nudged the Belgian behind the baseline and neutralised his court positioning. Yet Goffin steadied himself to force a tie-break and remained courageous.
