Nadal leads their FedEx ATP Head2Head series 3-1, including all three of their clay-court matches. Goffin beat Nadal during group play at the 2017 Nitto ATP Finals in London.

“It is probably the ultimate challenge,” Goffin said of playing Nadal in a best-of-five match on clay. “I need to use angles. I need to play early. If he plays short shots, I will have to do it. But if I have to run a lot, it will be to his favour. And when he starts dictating the match, it becomes very difficult.”

Fifth-seeded Belgian David Goffin won the first seven games against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, a Spanish qualifier, in a 6-0, 6-2 win over 48 minutes. The 2015 ‘s-Hertogenbosch semi-finalist will now prepare to face France’s Pierre-Hugues Herbert, who was a 6-4, 7-5 winner over 2018 semi-finalist Matthew Ebden of Australia in 82 minutes.

But David Goffin wasted no time beating him on the Halle grass, as the Belgian ousted the eighth seed 6-1, 6-1 in just 50 minutes. The 2017 Nitto ATP Finals runner-up will next face Moldovan Radu Albot, who advanced on Monday.

David Goffin, 2017 Nitto ATP Finals runner-up, fought past Delray Beach Open by VITACOST.com champion Radu Albot of Moldova 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to setup a potential quarter-final matchup with second seed Alexander Zverev. Goffin improved to 3-3 on the season in deciding sets, and 80-45 (64%) for his career, according to his FedEx ATP Win/Loss Record.
"It was not easy today. It was the first time I was playing on the centre court. It's different conditions compared to the outside court," Goffin said. "I'm really happy with the way I fought."

Goffin Stuns Zverev In Halle

David Goffin entered the week with just a 14-14 record on the season. But if his courageous victory on Friday against second seed Alexander Zverev showed anything, it’s that the Belgian is moving closer to the form that saw him reach the championship match of the 2017 Nitto ATP Finals.

Goffin, who let slip two match points at 5-4 in the third set, stayed the course to beat Zverev 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(3) and reach the semi-finals of the NOVENTI OPEN. The World No. 33 saved seven of the 10 break points he faced en route to his first Top 10 victory of the year.

It appeared Zverev might use the confidence he gained from triumphing in Geneva, making the Roland Garros quarter-finals and previously advancing to two Halle finals to survive his battle against Goffin. He struck a big serve and a deep forehand approach shot to save the two match points he faced on his serve at 4-5.

But Goffin was unrelenting, winning all five of his service points in the tie-break to put even more pressure on Zverev. And after two hours and 16 minutes, when Zverev pushed a final backhand slice into the net, the Belgian moved on.

“I started to serve badly [after the first set] and also didn't play good in the rallies. Things can go fast against a player like him if that is the case,” said Zverev. “I can also take the positives. I played three great matches here. Today's match was a high-quality one and so were the first two rounds. Of course, I am not happy that I lost, but I feel good for Wimbledon. Let’s see how things will go there.”

Goffin’s best previous performance in two Halle appearances came in 2016, when he made the quarter-finals. But the four-time ATP Tour champion is now one victory from reaching his second tour-level grass-court championship match (2015 ’s-Hertogenbosch).

Goffin Snaps Berrettini's Winning Streak, Reaches Halle Final

Matteo Berrettini has been nearly unbreakable over the past two weeks. But that did not stop David Goffin from beating the Italian on Saturday.

The former World No. 7 ousted Berrettini 7-6(4), 6-3 to reach the final of the NOVENTI OPEN, his first championship match since finishing runner-up at the 2017 Nitto ATP Finals. Goffin had lost six consecutive tour-level semi-finals before battling past last week’s Stuttgart champion in one hour and 37 minutes.

Goffin snapped Berrettini’s eight-match winning streak, withstanding the World No. 22’s 14 aces and saving all three break points he faced. Entering the match, Berrettini had won 83 of his previous 84 service games. But the Belgian was even stronger on serve, carving an ace out wide — his sixth ace of the day — to complete his victory.

This was largely a baseline battle with little difference to separate the two players. But with Berrettini serving with a mini-break in the first-set tie-break, Goffin hit two strong returns in a row to flip the script and help him take the opener. And as the match wore on, he was increasingly the more consistent player.

Goffin arrived at this ATP 500 tournament with just a 14-14 record on the season, and at his lowest ATP Ranking, No. 33, since the week of 15 September 2014. But the 28-year-old has beaten a 2019 ATP Tour titlist in each round in Halle, including a quarter-final triumph against 2018 Nitto ATP Finals champion Alexander Zverev.

In the final, Goffin will meet nine-time champion Roger Federer or Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert. The Belgian owns only one win from eight FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings with Federer, but he has triumphed on all three occasions against Herbert.

Goffin's Quest For Confidence

Belgian reflects on injury-filled 2018 and the road back to top form

The past 13 months have not been easy for David Goffin. After reaching the championship match at the 2017 Nitto ATP Finals, he missed four weeks early in 2018 due to a freak accident in the Rotterdam semi-finals that resulted in an eye injury. After making the semi-finals at Cincinnati in August, any momentum he gained came to a halt when he missed the final five weeks of the season due to an elbow injury.

But the Belgian takes solace in knowing that all it takes is one moment to turn it all around.

“It’s just been a tough period and I just need some confidence. I have it in practice, so that’s why I’m really positive,” Goffin told ATPTour.com. “Sometimes it could be a good match, a good battle, a good win or a good result in a tournament just to give me some confidence and just to see that I can do it and I’m still there and I have the level. It’s much better already this week.”

From 2014-17, Goffin built up confidence as he steadily improved his game. Each year, he broke a new milestone in the year-end ATP Rankings; first it was the Top 25, then the Top 20, the Top 15, and finally the Top 10 after his performance at the season finale in London two seasons ago.

“All of a sudden you start to have a lot of injuries, an accident, a fracture to my elbow and then changing my coach. It was like you have to rebuild a new base for the future and make a completely refined project because there’s something different, you want to change,” Goffin said. “I’m 28 now, so maybe it’s time to do something else for the next four or five years to still improve and I think it could be the best years in front of me in my career. It’s different, but it could take some time and I know that, so I’m patient and I hope it’s going to pay off.”


Goffin has recently reunited with 2002 Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson, who is his lone coach. The Swede spent time with Goffin in 2016, so there is plenty of familiarity between the two. They officially began their partnership after Marseille in February.

“I’m really happy to be back and now it’s the third week we’re working together on the [ATP] Tour,” Johansson said. “The good thing about that is we don’t need the ‘get to know each other’ time, because we know each other really well and we had a lot of contact even when we weren’t working together.”

Johansson acknowledges that Goffin, currently World No. 20, will have to dig deep to return to the Top 10 of the ATP Rankings, having peaked at No. 7 in 2017. According to him, it may be even tougher now.

“I think it’s more challenging, because the depth in tennis now is amazing. Now is the first time ever that the youngsters are coming up and they’re actually challenging the big guns,” Johansson said. “So for me it’s extremely tough for a player like David to come back to the Top 10. But that’s our big goal, to try to achieve that.”

Goffin and Johansson are not making any major changes, as the Belgian’s game isn’t far off. He simply is fine-tuning various aspects of his game and hoping that piecing all of that together can make for a big pay-off.

“Just small details that I can do to be a little more aggressive, how I can be at the net, improve the serve and maybe the zone, the target where I hit the serve to be ready for the next shot on my groundstrokes,” Goffin said. “So it can be small details, but it could make a difference to be more aggressive.”

Goffin, who was 4-6 at tour-level entering this ATP Masters 1000 event, is into the third round of the Miami Open presented by Itau, where he will face 14th seed Marco Cecchinato. But he’s not dreaming of any specific goals. He’s simply working hard daily to try to regain his form.

“For the moment it’s just to come back at my best level and to be competitive match after match. I think it’s not perfect yet, but I’m improving. The good thing is I’m playing really well during practice,” Goffin said. “It could be one match, it could be a set. Sometimes you like to open the bottle and then you can be fine, so I’m still working hard. We are working together during practice and I know it’s going to come. Sometimes I play well, but I have to play well during the whole match. It’s better and better day after day.”

After speaking to ATPTour.com shortly after his second-round victory against Pablo Andujar, Goffin, racquets in hand, headed back towards the practice courts with Johansson.

“I’m just trying now to enjoy it. I enjoy every moment during practice. I just want to feel the same during every match to come back to play very relaxed, to hit every shot — and not tight — and to be creative; to create every point, to be aggressive, just play, because that’s what I love. I’m sure if I’m with this attitude, a good attitude, I think I can come back at my best and the results will come.”
