Goffin Saves 5 Set Points, Ousts Bublik In Montpellier

Alexander Bublik pulled out all the tricks from his bag, including an underarm serve, but it was not enough against David Goffin on Thursday in Montpellier. The second-seeded Belgian star saved five set points in the second set to defeat the Kazakh 6-3, 7-6(9) and advance to the quarter-finals of the Open Sud de France.

Goffin was in danger of being pushed to a decider against the shotmaking 22-year-old, but he was clutch under pressure to triumph after one hour and 47 minutes. In the big moments, the World No. 10 had an answer for Bublik’s aggression, whether by threading the needle with a perfect passing shot or winning cat-and-mouse battles up at the net.

On Bublik’s final set-point opportunity, the Kazakh hit an underarm serve to try to catch Goffin off guard, but the 2017 Nitto ATP Finals runner-up took advantage by lacing a backhand down the line. Goffin will next play home favourite and close friend Pierre-Hugues Herbert, who ousted fifth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-6(2), 7-5 after one hour and 49 minutes. Herbert reached the final in Montpellier last year, falling short against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Goffin has enjoyed a strong start to his 2020 season, winning three of his four matches at the inaugural ATP Cup, including a victory against then-World No. 1 Rafael Nadal. Goffin is pursuing his first ATP Tour title since 2017 Tokyo.

Three-time Montpellier champion Richard Gasquet continued his road to a fourth title at this ATP 250 event, rallying past Spanish veteran Feliciano Lopez 6-7(1), 6-4, 6-2 after two hours and five minutes. The Frenchman now leads his ATP Head2Head series with Lopez 7-1, and he will next face Canadian Vasek Pospisil, who beat countryman Denis Shapovalov on Wednesday.

Seventh seed Filip Krajinovic also advanced with a 6-1, 6-1 win against 2019 Next Gen ATP Finals qualifier Mikael Ymer of Sweden. The Serbian earned 15 break points in his 78-minute triumph, converting six of those chances.

Krajinovic will next play Frenchman Gregoire Barrere, who upset former World No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov on Wednesday. It will be the pair’s first ATP Head2Head meeting.

David Goffin beat home favourite Robin Haase 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 to open his bid for a first trophy in Rotterdam. Goffin saved both break points he faced in the deciding set to record his seventh ATP Head2Head win in eight matches against Haase. The Belgian, who reached the Open Sud de France semi-finals last week, has now won eight of 11 matches this year.

Goffin improves to 7-6 in Rotterdam after his two-hour, 29-minute victory. The World No. 10 reached the championship match at the ATP 500 event in 2017 and also made it through to the semi-finals in 2018.

Dziesiąty gracz świata od kilkunastu dni trenuje na obiektach w Monte Carlo. - W zeszłym tygodniu trenowałem z Jannikiem Sinnerem. Odczucia, jakie miałem podczas pierwszych od kilku tygodni ćwiczeń na korcie, były bardzo dziwne - mówił w wywiadzie dla "L'Equipe".
- Czułem, że piłka jest bardzo szybka, a moje oczy musiały przyzwyczaić się do prędkości gry - kontynuował. - Zaczęliśmy treningi bardzo spokojnie, nie uderzaliśmy zbyt wiele, bo to mogło być bardzo niebezpieczne dla nadgarstka. W trakcie wymuszonej przerwy Belg będzie pracował nad rozwojem swojego tenisa. - Moim priorytetem jest odzyskanie kontaktu z piłką i utrzymanie kondycji fizycznej. Będę też pracował nad akcjami przy siatce. Wolej nie jest moją mocną stroną - wyjaśnił.

Rozgrywki ATP, WTA i ITF są zawieszone do końca lipca. Zapytany, kiedy jego zdaniem zawodowy cykl zostanie wznowiony, odparł: - Nie wiemy, kiedy tour powróci i jaki będzie kalendarz. W tej chwili przygotowujemy się na ślepo, bo nie mamy wiadomości, czy będziemy grać na kortach twardych, czy ziemnych. Szczerze mówiąc, większość tenisistów myślała, iż w tym roku już nie będziemy występować, ale teraz mam cień nadziei. Myślę, że mamy szansę, by wrócić pod koniec roku, w listopadzie lub w grudniu, lecz będą to turnieje za zamkniętymi drzwiami.

1) He Played His Idol On His Roland Garros Debut
In 2012, as a lucky loser, Goffin survived two five-set matches en route to the Round of 16 at Roland Garros. The 21-year-old faced his idol, Roger Federer, for a place in the quarter-finals.

After taking the opener, Goffin pushed Federer in the second set before falling to a four-set defeat. Following the match, Goffin and Federer shared a joint interview on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.

2) He Returned In Style In 2014
After breaking his left wrist in September 2013, Goffin reached new heights the following year. The Belgian arrived at the 2014 Generali Open on a 15-match and 30-set winning streak, after capturing ATP Challenger Tour titles in Scheveningen, Poznan and Tampere.

Searching for his first ATP Tour trophy, the 23-year-old cruised through to the semi-finals in Kitzbühel without dropping a set, before earning three-set comeback wins against Maximo Gonzalez and Dominic Thiem to take the title. At the 2014 Nitto ATP Finals, the Rocourt native received the 2014 Comeback Player of the Year trophy.


3) He Ended 2017 In Top Form
At the 2017 Nitto ATP Finals, Goffin earned three Top 4 victories en route to the championship match. The 26-year-old overcame Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem to advance to the semi-finals, where he rallied from a set down to upset six-time champion Roger Federer.

Goffin met World No. 6 Grigor Dimitrov in the final, but fell in three sets to the Bulgarian. With titles in Tokyo and Shenzhen, Goffin ended the year with a 59-24 record.

4) 2019 Was A Year Of Two Halves
“Last year was a lot of ups and downs for me. At the beginning of the year, it was really tough. I was a little bit lost,” said Goffin.

In his opening 15 tournaments of the 2019 ATP Tour season, Goffin earned just two Top 30 victories and failed to win more than two matches at any event. But the Belgian reversed his fortunes at the NOVENTI OPEN in Halle, beating three Top 30 players in four matches to earn his place in the championship match.

Despite his loss to Federer in the final, Goffin continued to build in confidence through the remainder of the year. After a quarter-final run at Wimbledon, the four-time ATP Tour titlist reached his first ATP Masters 1000 final at the Western & Southern Open and advanced to the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships semi-finals in Tokyo.

“I changed coaches. I started to work with Thomas Johansson and then week-after-week, I started to play much better,” said Goffin. “The second half was much better. I finished the year No. 11 [in the FedEx ATP Rankings] so, at the end, it was a good year.”

5) He Entered The History Books At The 2020 ATP Cup
Remember this for future quiz nights: David Goffin was the first player to use Video Review in ATP Cup history.

In his opening match of the 2020 ATP Tour season, the 5’11” right-hander unsuccessfully challenged a foot fault call during his match against Radu Albot. Goffin went on to clinch the tie for Team Belgium with a 6-4, 6-1 victory and ended the team competition with a 3-1 record.

In the Final Eight, Goffin became only the second man to beat Nadal in singles while playing for Spain (excluding Olympics). Nadal had won 32 straight such contests heading into the match (32-2).

Goffin, Backed By Clijsters, Battles Through Opening W&S Open Test

David Goffin reached the final of last year's Western & Southern Open. Although the ATP Masters 1000 is being held at a different location, the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the Belgian doesn't seem to mind.

The seventh seed battled through a back-and-forth opening set Sunday evening before beating Borna Coric 7-6(6), 6-4 to reach the third round.

"It was a big battle until the end of the first set. I think winning the first set was the key because after that, I didn't lose my serve. I served well until the end," Goffin said. "The surface is very quick so when you are aggressive and you serve well, it makes a big difference."

Goffin now leads Coric 5-0 in their ATP Head2Head series, with their most recent meeting coming at 2016 Halle. After clinching his victory, the Belgian waved to the "crowd", even though the applause just came from his own team, because there are no fans.

"I found it very funny when I saw Andy Murray yesterday. He did the same. It was quite nice to do like normal, like there were a lot of fans," Goffin said. "I did the same because I know that some people are watching us. It's quite nice and quite funny, especially when you win."

The 2017 Nitto ATP Finals runner-up had more than just his own team in the stands, though. Former WTA No. 1 Kim Clijsters supported her countryman, who will next play 12th seed Denis Shapovalov or Jan-Lennard Struff.

"It was nice to see that she was there to support. It was her team, one of my best friends... he is coaching as well on the women's tour. He was next to Thomas Johansson, my coach, so it was nice," Goffin said. "There were no fans, but I had the most important fans behind me, so it was good to have their support."

Mr. Opportunity? Goffin Clutch Against Opelka In US Open First Round

Seventh seed David Goffin received one of the toughest draws at the US Open, facing big-serving American Reilly Opelka in the first round. But the 2017 Nitto ATP Finals runner-up was opportunistic on Monday to advance.

Goffin converted four of his seven break points in a 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory after two hours and 27 minutes. He now leads the pair’s ATP Head2Head series 2-1.

"It was great because you never want to play that kind of guy [in the] first round of a Grand Slam, especially on a fast surface. Against that kind of player, big guy, you don't control everything. You can even play well, it's just you lose your concentration for a few seconds and you can lose the set. He can be confident... hit some amazing shots and all of a sudden, the same, you lose the set," Goffin said. "It's something that sometimes you don't control, and sometimes you prefer have the match on your racquet, [so you] feel that if you play your best, good tennis, you win."

The Belgian has been consistent at Flushing Meadows in recent years, advancing to the fourth round of the US Open in three consecutive appearances. Goffin has not lost before the third round of a major since 2018 Wimbledon. Opelka was in form, reaching his first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final at last week's Western & Southern Open, but it was not enough.

The key came at 1-1 in the third set. The four-time ATP Tour titlist did not earn a break point on Opelka's booming serve in the first two sets. But he slowly began to put more returns in play and lengthen rallies, forcing the American out of his comfort zone. Goffin, who made only 19 unforced errors, will next play Lloyd Harris. The South African beat 2018 Roland Garros semi-finalist Marco Cecchinato 6-4, 7-5, 6-2.

"It was a very important moment," Goffin said. "I started to return much better, to be more confident. It was probably the key of the match."

Goffin recovered from 3/5 down in the first set tie-break, prior to five straight service breaks at the start of the second set. The Belgian won 16 out of 22 points from 1-1 in the third set to seize the momentum and broke in the ninth game of the fourth set.

The World No. 10, who hit 29 winners including 12 aces, will aim to improve upon 43 per cent of his second-serve points won in his next match against No. 26 seed Filip Krajinovic, who dominated Marcos Giron 6-4, 6-1, 6-3.

Goffin broke a two-match losing streak against Krajinovic for a place in the US Open fourth round for the fourth consecutive year. In a match that featured 11 breaks of serve, it was Goffin who repelled Krajinovic’s power to win 6-1, 7-6(5), 6-4 in two hours and five minutes. Goffin hit 36 winners.

Goffin secured the first four games of the match, winning the 16 of 22 points. He wrapped up the 27-minute set when Krajinovic hit a backhand slice wide.

Krajinovic, who continued to struggle on second serve, managed to break Goffin for the first time early in the second set, but through 10 games there had been six service breaks. When Krajinovic hit a forehand wide to be broken at 4-4, Goffin appeared to take control, but the World No. 10 could not convert a set point. He made amends in the tie-break, winning the first four points and carried the momentum when Krajinovic hooked a forehand wide at 5/6.

From 1-1 in the third set, Goffin won 12 of the next 14 points, including four straight points at 2-1, after Krajinovic had served with a 30/0 lead. Krajinovic, sensing his last chance to get back into the match, stepped up to recover to 4-4, but soon faltered.

Krajinovic had won their past two ATP Head2Head meetings in 2019 at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier and the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
