JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yeah, I did. It was a tough match. A lot of things I had to deal with out there. But, yeah, it's good to get through in the end.



Q. Any mixed emotions playing an Aussie?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yeah, well, he's tough. Benny is one of my closest mates on tour. We have known each other since we were about 10 or so. We practiced together; had the same coach for the last couple years.

Yeah, I guess it's tough playing someone, you know, who you're so close to. You want the best for them, but at the same time you have a job to do.

Like I said, I'm happy to get the win.



Q. I guess at least Australia had a winner at least.

JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yeah, exactly. We had to do a media interview before the match, and I said then, you know, hopefully the winner goes through and wins the tournament.



Q. Any chance of that happening, you think?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: We'll have to play a bit better. I'm just looking forward to my next match, and hopefully I can do some damage then.



Q. You know each other's games so well; was that a struggle?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yeah, we have practiced together a lot, so we kind of know what each other's strengths and weaknesses are. It was a tough battle out there.



Q. I think the crowd started singing Advance Australia Fair towards the end of the match today. Was that important to have the crowd on you?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yeah, I mean, there were certain parts of the crowd that were for Benny and which were cheering for me. It was a great atmosphere out there, and, you know, I was pretty happy to be part of it.



Q. What did your coach say after the match?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: I haven't actually seen or spoken to him about the match yet. He just said, Well done and just focusing on recovery. I was out there for four and a half hours.



Q. Must have been hard for him sitting there between you two.

JAMES DUCKWORTH: I imagine it would have been, yeah. It was a lot of ups and downs, and, yeah, it was a long match.

You know, he's happy I got the win.



Q. How long is your longest match in your career?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: I played a quite a long four setter last year which was three and a half hours maybe.

Other than that, I think...



Q. So at least by an hour long this is longer than you played before?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yeah, yeah, I think so.



Q. How did you react physically?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: I actually was starting to get like a few switches at the start of the third set in my legs. But, you know, like come the fifth set I was fine. I actually pulled up quite well afterwards. I did a lot of training beforehand with my coaches up in Brisbane. It was really hot up there, really humid.

So, yeah, put a lot of physical work in, and it paid off.



Q. Can you explain what it feels like when you finally get there at the end of four and a half hours to get there? Because it was a see sawing battle the whole way through.

JAMES DUCKWORTH: Well, it's happiness, excitement, a bit of relief, as well. Yeah, lots of emotions. Yeah, right now I'm really, really stoked to be playing the second round.



Q. I understand you guys are staying at the same hotel and have been eating meals together. Are you going to eat together tonight?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: I will probably be here late and eat here and getting some physio treatment done, so probably not tonight.



Q. Is that the greatest satisfaction you have had in a match, probably the biggest match you have played given the crowd and the support there?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yeah, I mean, it's always good to win at a Grand Slam. On the other hand, you know, I still kind of feel for Benny. He's a good mate of mine and he's pretty disappointed. So, yeah, it's a good feeling, but I still feel for him.



Q. Obviously since he walked off the court, have you two caught up?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: Just in the locker room together. Not much was said; not much to be said.



Q. On paper it opens up things a little bit more for you; is that how you see it?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yeah, I guess. Kavcic though is still quite a good player. I practiced with him a few times. Solid baseliner. Doesn't miss much. Doesn't give you much.

Yeah, it's going to be a tough match.



Q. It's going to be pretty hot on Thursday; how will you handle that?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: I actually like playing in the heat. You know, I'm used to it, you know, playing here in Australia a lot, and training, like I said, in hot conditions in Brisbane.

Also helps with my serve a bit. Probably going through the air a bit quicker, so, yeah, looking forward to playing on a hot day.



Q. Is it a unique feeling when the crowds start quacking?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yeah, I guess not many people get quacks from the crowd. Like I said, it was a great atmosphere, and something I feel privileged to be part of.



Q. Pat Rafter was out watching. Is it part of their sort of Davis Cup audition? Would you like to get a gig in the next month?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yeah, for sure. It would be great for Davis Cup. It's one of my dreams.

I went to the tie in Germany. I was the fifth player when we lost to Germany in a bit of a heartbreaker.

Yeah, it was on my first time being there and being amongst, you know, the group for the week. Yeah, it was great fun. Learnt a lot from Lleyton and Pat and Rochey. And definitely, yeah, something I will try and build towards.



Q. Do you get any privileges? Like sharing a room with Luke Saville, do you get biggest bed now or...

JAMES DUCKWORTH: Luke actually was in the biggest bed, but I think I might keep the same routine. (Laughter.)

He lost in the big bed, so maybe it's not such a good bed. (Laughter.)

James Duckworth prevails in tough five-setter against fellow Aussie Ben Mitchell

HE GOT the crowd quacking, but James Duckworth will not claim "Mighty Duck" status at the Australian team hotel after his marathon first round win yesterday.

Duckworth claimed a heart-stopping 6-4, 7-6 (10-8), 4-6, 5-7, 8-6 victory over close mate Ben Mitchell yesterday, a four hour 26 minute epic that stands as the longest match of the tournament.

Staying in a shared room with Luke Saville, Duckworth said his teammate can keep the big bed as he doesn't want to change anything after he became the first Australian male to win through to the second round.

"I think I might keep the same routine. He lost in the big bed so maybe it's not such a good bed," Duckworth said.

He will will play world No.93 Blaz Kavcic in the second round and confessed to mixed emotions after his win because Mitchell is his training partner and they've been mates since they were 10.

"It's happiness, excitement, a bit of relief. Lots of emotions. Right now I'm really stoked to be playing the second round," he said. "It's always good to win at a Grand Slam, on the other hand you know I still kind of feel for Benny.

He's a good match of mine and he's pretty disappointed."

Trust two Aussie battlers to produce such a dogfight as they scrapped over the $45,500 second round pay cheque and 45 ATP points that could define their futures.

Duckworth's monster serve proved the difference, sending down 28 aces to 14, including a 221 km/h rocket that is the third fastest of the tournament.

Even after four hours he was still firing his cannon, a 213 km/h ace saving a break point in the fifth set.

Little separated the pair, with Duckworth hitting more winners (61-56) and winning only nine more points (208-199) for the match.

"I feel pretty shattered. I can't really describe the feeling I've got right now," Mitchell said after walking off to a standing ovation and three cheers.

"There is definitely no happiness, it's just very bitter and annoyed.

"Yep, I gave it my whole.

I actually had a set point in the second set I think. (Win that) it's a win for me, one point, that's my match.

"I fought to the end, which is something I can be proud of."

Australia's former No.1 player Marinko Matosevic continued his horrendous Grand Slam record with an eighth first-round loss from as many attempts in his career. He lost 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 to 12th seed Marin Cilic.

In other Australian results yesterday, Luke Saville lost to Go Soeda of Japan 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 while John-Patrick Smith was beaten by Portugal's Joao Sousa 6-4, 6-1, 6-4.

Q. Have you ever experienced anything like that in terms of physically what was happening towards the end of that fifth set to your body?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: Uhm, I've cramped a few times in my life, a couple of times in Asia when it was really humid. But, yeah, the last three days have been pretty long and tough and my body certainly started to feel the effects of that in the end of the fifth set.



Q. It looked beyond what most of us know as cramp. Explain what was happening.

JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yeah, I mean, from about, oh, 3 2 in the fifth my hamstring and quads were locking up. I started off just on serve, and then kind of when I was moving around the baseline. Any kind of sharp movement or quick movement, yeah, I'd lock up. It was quite painful.



Q. What is the mindset when that happens? Are you just trying to hang in there?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: Well, I was just trying to focus on holding my serve, making a lot of first serves. Then if the ball got into play, I knew I had to be in control. I couldn't have him dictating and running me around.

Then on his serve, I was just trying to somehow jagger a point or two at the start of the game. If not, I was kind of swinging if I got down 30 Love or something like that.



Q. What is the primary emotion for you here? Pride that you were able to hang in there? Disappointment? What is it?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: I'm not too happy right now. Yeah, I was pretty shattered. I probably didn't play my best tennis today. It was a big opportunity to play in the third round of a Grand Slam against Tsonga. Yeah, I let it slip.



Q. How frustrating is it when you've been out there so long, you're so close, you're right there, and your legs aren't doing what you want them to do?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yeah, it's tough. It's something that us tennis players have to deal with from time to time.

Like I said, right now it's pretty disappointing.



Q. Do you know physically how many kilos you lost?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: No, I didn't weigh myself before or after. It seems it was a lot.



Q. Regarding the fifth set, what do you have to do?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yeah, I was drinking as much as possible. Had a few bananas, a few energy drills. A bit of Coke for caffeine. Started having some salt, just plain salt, trying to help the cramp, yeah.



Q. He looked like he was feeling as badly as you were physically. Neither of you were going to give it up. Just his approach, what did you make of it?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yeah, he fought hard as well. He didn't give an inch. Yeah, he was too good today.



Q. You half expect someone is going to sort of throw in the towel, perhaps not voluntarily. You just refused to leave that court.

JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yeah, I mean, he's a tough competitor, as well. I pride myself on my competitive ability. We both just were hanging on for dear life.

Unfortunately he came away with it in the end.



Q. About the weather, how hot was it out there?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yeah, it was pretty hot. The court actually felt really hot underfoot. My feet were burning every time I pushed off to sprint. I was sweating bucket loads. Yeah, it was tough conditions.



Q. Can you share your plan for the year, where you're at, what you want to achieve for the year now that this is over?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yeah, I'll sit down with my coaches, speak about things that I need to work on, look at the schedule, where I'm going to be playing, how I can improve and get better.



Q. Would you like to play more Grand Slams this year?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: Of course, yeah. It's the pinnacle of tennis. I played all of them last year, all qualifying. I had a couple of tough losses at Wimbledon and US Open quallies.

But, yeah, it's great playing the Grand Slams. It's something that I'm going to strive to play.



Q. Do you think you've got the Aussie fans on your side? Do you think they're excited to see where you might go this year?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yeah, I think so. Yeah, I had great support two days ago in my singles and then yesterday in the doubles and again today.

It was a lot of fun playing out there in front of so many people. They really got behind me. Hopefully, yeah, everyone will keep supporting me for the rest of the year.



Q. Just after the match, have you been on an IV drip between now and then?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: No. I just went on the bike for a little bit.



Q. Went to the bike?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yes. Thought I'd smash out a 10K time trial (laughter). No, just a light cool down. Had a bit of a stretch. Saw my physio. Had a bit to eat. Actually I don't feel too bad right now.

Poor Kavcic walked into the locker room and locked up and went full body cramp. He's on morphine now. He's struggling a bit more than I am.



Q. If you made it over the lines, do you think you would have been in fair shape to play on Saturday?

JAMES DUCKWORTH: I would have recovered as best as I could. I didn't feel too bad this morning. You know, I did play a 7 6 in the third doubles yesterday as well. It would have helped having a day off, hitting for 20 minutes tomorrow, then playing the next day. I think I would have been okay.
