Duckworth, Nishioka Win Australian Open Wild Cards

James Duckworth will make a fifth consecutive main draw appearance at the Australian Open after winning the Australian Wildcard Playoff on Sunday. The top seed was the last player standing in the 16-man draw after Benjamin Mitchell withdrew ahead of the final to be with his girlfriend for the birth of their first child.
“It would have been nice to win properly but that’s the way it goes,” Duckworth said. "I managed to get through a couple of tough matches [this week], especially the semifinal against Marinko [Matosevic]. I’d never beaten him before. I didn’t play so well the last four months of the year so to come here and win a few matches, especially some tight ones, some tight tie-breaks, really helps the confidence a lot. Hopefully I can use it as a bit of a springboard and start the year off well and have a good year.”
World No. 120 Duckworth reached the second round at Melbourne Park in 2012, '13 & '15, claiming a pair of five-set victories. He cracked the Top 100 of the Emirates ATP Rankings for the first time earlier this year, peaking at No. 82, following his first match win at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 level in Indian Wells.
In the Asia-Pacific Wildcard Playoff, top seed Yoshihito Nishioka rallied past Chinese Taipei's Jason Jung 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the final. The Japanese will make his Australian Open debut, contesting his fourth Grand Slam main draw. One of 10 players under the age of 22 in the Top 150, Nishioka reached his first ATP World Tour quarter-final earlier this year in Delray Beach. The 20 year old also captured his second ATP Challenger Tour title last month in Toyota.
“I’m so excited that I can play main draw in the Australian Open, it will be the first time for me,” said Nishioka. “Entering the Top 100 was actually my goal for this year, but I didn’t make it. Hopefully next year I’m able to be in the Top 70. And I already won a first round match at the US Open this year, so next time I hope I can win a second round at a Grand Slam."
Duckworth and Nishioka join former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt, American teen Noah Rubin and France's Quentin Halys among wild card recipients.

Q. Do you think you've ever played a bigger match to this point in your career?
JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yes, right now this is probably the biggest one I've played. Yeah, should be a packed house here on Rod Laver. Lleyton's last Australian Open.

Q. How did you feel when you were plucked out of the hat?
JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yeah, range of different emotions. It's pretty weird playing him. Looked up to him for a long time. Watched him win Grand Slams, be world No. 1 when I was younger. He's helped me out a lot over the last few years, stuff on and off the court.

Yeah, so it will be a little bit awkward, a little strange. Got to try to put all of that out of my mind and concentrate on the match.

Q. Do you feel you might be the away player in the Australian Open?
JAMES DUCKWORTH: I don't think I'll have the same sort of support that I've had in previous having 99% of the crowd going for me. Hopefully a couple people will still be cheering for me.

Q. Have you had any contact with Lleyton since the draw and what was said?
JAMES DUCKWORTH: We've seen each other a couple times. Just sort of laughed about it. Carried on as normal. Yeah, still good mates. I'm sure we'll be good mates afterwards, as well.

Q. What do you think the match will do for your profile, prime time exposure?
JAMES DUCKWORTH: Hopefully I get a few more Twitter followers (smiling).

Yeah, it will be cool. People will know my name, know who I am. Hopefully see me play some good tennis. That would be nice.

Q. Does that opportunity excite you? How important is it for you to show your best on this stage?
JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yeah, I'm excited to play on a big court. Not sure what time yet. I think there's probably a good chance it could be at night. I'm excited to play in front of a big crowd, a lot of viewers on TV.

Q. A lot of talk about Hewitt. How do you feel you're tracking at the moment?
JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yeah, played pretty well the last month or so. Had a decent sort of training block, then played the wild card playoff, gradually got better through that. Played a couple good matches in Brisbane and Sydney, played some good doubles as well.

I'm feeling good, pretty confident with the way I'm hitting the ball right now.

Q. New coach. Anything changed at all?
JAMES DUCKWORTH: Not a whole lot. Still very similar sort of messages. The only reason we changed was moving down here to Melbourne. I was happy with the academy and base I had up in Brisbane. He and Mark are quite similar. They're both sort of on the same page with the way they want me to play and the way they need me to play, so there's not a whole lot of change there.

Q. Do you have a favorite Lleyton Hewitt memory?
JAMES DUCKWORTH: The whole run in 2005 was pretty cool. I was watching all them, the five-setters against Rafa, Nalbandian. I was pretty gutted when he lost in the final, as well.

Q. How would it sit with you to end the career of Lleyton Hewitt?
JAMES DUCKWORTH: I thought that one might come (smiling).

It's not something that I'd like to do. But sort of been put in this position now. Yeah, I mean, I guess if I win, I'll apologize to him. But, yeah, I'm going to have to sort of put that out of my mind and go out there and try to play my game, give it my best shot.

Q. Could wreck your Davis Cup chances as well.
JAMES DUCKWORTH: Hopefully not (laughter). That all of a sudden makes it a bit strange having him as the Davis Cup captain now. Yeah, hopefully he'll look past the match.

Q. Is that something you think is realistic this year, Davis Cup?
JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yeah. I'm going to give myself the best possible chance, whether it be singles or doubles. I'd love to get a run at some stage and I'll be working as hard as I can to do that.

Q. In a couple of words, how would you describe Kyrgios and Tomic?
JAMES DUCKWORTH: Entertaining. I like watching them both play. Good shot makers. They're talented. Great players. I think they both can be strong contenders in Grand Slams in the next few years.

Q. What was it like to be part of that occasion?
JAMES DUCKWORTH: I mean, right now, you know, I'm disappointed about the loss. I mean, it was a great atmosphere. You know, I'll look back when my career ends saying that I shared the court with one of the best players ever in his last tournament on a big court. You know, we played some good tennis out there.

Yeah, he's playing well. But, yeah, there is a lot of disappointment right now.

Q. Can you take confidence from your performance, though?
JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yeah. I mean, there's certain parts of my game that I think I used pretty well. But, yeah, there are still a few things I need to work on, as well.

Q. Lleyton admitted it was awkward playing against you because of the relationship that you have. Was it the same way for you?
JAMES DUCKWORTH: Yeah, definitely. I've known him for a number of years now. We've spent a lot of time together. You know, just before the summer, I went over to his place a few times, we practiced there. We practice a lot at tournaments. Go out to dinners a lot. I've had a pretty close relationship for a few years there.

It's always tough playing a good friend and also someone I've looked up to for a number of years.

Q. What did you say to him at the net?
JAMES DUCKWORTH: You've had a great career. You're a legend.

Q. Did you feel the weight of expectations of a nation pulling against you?
JAMES DUCKWORTH: It was a little bit different. It's not exactly common to go out at your home Grand Slam playing on the biggest court and most of the crowd's not really on my side. Just the massive roar when he came out, when he was winning points was a bit odd. But it is what it is.

Q. What are you going to take out of this experience?
JAMES DUCKWORTH: I mean, I think, you know, I'll only benefit from playing on a big arena with a big crowd. You know, I think it's just a good experience in itself. Hopefully I can learn from it a little bit.

Q. Obviously there was a lot of pressure on you before the game. Did you feel that pressure during the game?
JAMES DUCKWORTH: I mean, during the match, you know, once it started, I was just focusing on what I had to do to win the next point. So, I mean, that sort of went out of my mind as soon as it really started.

Q. For a few years there weren't that many up-and-coming young Australians on the tour. Now that there are, that must feel great.
JAMES DUCKWORTH: It's great we have a number of us pushing forward, up the rankings. Also it's good for our Davis Cup team. In the next few years, I think we've got a genuine shot at winning it. So it's great for Australian tennis.
