Thiem Makes Strong Start In Hamburg

Competing for the first time on clay since reaching his maiden Grand Slam final at Roland Garros, Dominic Thiem made a winning start as top seed at the German Tennis Championships presented by Kampmann.
The Austrian defeated #NextGenATP Frenchman Corentin Moutet 6-4, 6-2 to improve his tour-level record on the red dirt to 27-6 this season. Thiem, who has reached four tour-level championship matches on clay this season, won 75 per cent of second-serve return points and hit 11 forehand winners throughout the 82-minute contest.
The 10-time tour-level titlist will meet Australian John Millman in the second round. Millman saved all three break points he faced en route to a 7-5, 6-3 win over Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany.

Nikoloz Basilashvili recovered from a one-sided second set to upset fifth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-5, 1-6, 6-4. The 26-year-old, who has reached three tour-level quarter-finals in 2018, was clinical at crucial moments, breaking serve on four of his five break-point chances.
Basilashvili will face 2016 finalist Pablo Cuevas for a place in the last eight. Cuevas beat Banque Eric Sturdza Geneva Open champion Marton Fucsovics 6-3, 6-2 to improve to 11-5 at the event.
Marach/Pavic Return To Winning Ways
After a shock first-round loss at Wimbledon, ATP Doubles Race to London leaders Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic made a winning return to action in Germany. The top seeds needed 72 minutes to beat Argentine duo Leonardo Mayer and Diego Schwartzman 6-3, 6-4.
Second seeds Ivan Dodig and Jean-Julien Rojer also progressed, beating Damir Dzumhur and Hans Podlipnik-Castillo 4-6, 6-3, 10-4. Dodig and Rojer fired 10 aces and saved four of five break points in the 87-minute victory.

Dominic Thiem continued his quest for a third clay-court title of the season on Thursday at the German Tennis Championships 2018 presented by Kampmann.
Top seed Thiem lost just three of his first-service points and was rarely troubled by Australia’s John Millman in a 6-2, 6-2 victory over 72 minutes. He’ll now play Chile’s Nicolas Jarry in the quarter-finals.

Dominic Thiem and Dennis Novak were joined by stars of West Ham United Football Club on Wednesday morning at the Generali Open.

Spanish goalkeeper Adrian, English winger Michail Antonio joined their Austrian teammate and forward Marko Arnautovic on court for some football and tennis as Thiem and Novak warmed up for their Kitzbühel second-round matches.

West Ham United are in the Alpine town for a five-day training camp at the Sportplatz Kitzbühel-Langau.

“I'm a huge football fan and it was great to finally meet Marko,” said Thiem. “I would love to go and train with the team! It was really nice to play together. I hope you guys had a really good preparation in Austria and you have a great start the season. For us, it’s a big honour to play football with these big stars.”

Arnautovic admitted, “Dominic has done a great job and he is still young. He’s done a lot of good things and is now in the top ten in the world. He’s a very good player but he’s still got a long way to go because he’s young and I think, if he keeps working hard, hopefully he’s going to be the top one.

“It’s not normal that we can do this because Dominic has a game tonight and he’s come out with his partner to play football and enjoy some time. Now it’s time for him to go back, concentrate, take a rest and beat this guy up!”

Dominic Thiem cruises into second round

WHAT HAPPENED: His last match on Grandstand might've ended in heartbreak, but Dominic Thiem had no such misfortune in the first match of this year's US Open.

The No. 9 seed and French Open runner-up dropped just eight games in defeating Mirza Basic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, 6-3, 6-1, 6-4, to move safely through to the second round on Monday.

The Austrian's last appearance on Grandstand came in the fourth round of last year's US Open, where he held a two-sets-to-love lead and two match points before losing to Juan Martin del Potro.

Nonetheless, Thiem got a chance to flush out some of those memories thanks to a switch in the schedule, and scored a dominant victory in one hour and 29 minutes.

The Austrian was initially slated to play last on Court 10 when action began on Monday, but thanks to three other lengthy matches on the court, the match was ultimately moved to Grandstand after Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime was forced to retire in the third set of his match against compatriot Denis Shapovalov.

The switch did little to throw the No. 9 seed off his game, as he broke in the first game of the match and hardly looked back over the course of three sets.

He bookended the opener with breaks, as he again won a game on the Bosnian's serve to wrap up the opener, before breaking three times in the second set to grasp firm control of the match.

The Austrian lost just three points on serve in total in that set, and faced just one break point in three sets overall. Thiem was forced to save that in the final game of the match, but ultimately wrapped up victory in just under an hour-and-a-half to advance.

WHAT IT MEANS: The win is Thiem's first in the North American summer, as he was upset in the first round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto by Greek sensation Stefanos Tsitsipas, and was forced to withdraw from the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati with an illness.

The Austrian hammered 13 aces and 39 winners in the victory, and also won 16 of the 19 points played when he ventured to the net.

MATCH POINT: Since finishing runner-up at the French Open to Rafael Nadal, Thiem was 3-5 in his last eight matches entering the US Open, and has reached just one quarterfinal.

Nonetheless, being back in the Big Apple might help the 24-year-old reclaim some lost form. He's had some of his most consistent Slam showings in New York, as he's reached the fourth round in three of his four appearances.

Next up, he will face American Steve Johnson, who recorded a three-set victory over Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin.

New Year, Different Fifth-Set Result For Thiem

One year ago, Dominic Thiem’s run at the US Open ended in heartbreak in the fourth round. A two-set lead and two match points in the fourth set against eventual semi-finalist Juan Martin del Potro all disappeared. The Austrian had one foot in his first quarter-final at a Grand Slam other than Roland Garros, but the Argentine and his fearsome forehand knocked him right back out in a five-set classic.

But this time, Thiem did not let slip a fifth set in New York, beating home favourite Steve Johnson 6-7(5), 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 to reach the third round, where he will play another American in #NextGenATP Taylor Fritz.

Thiem is now 3-1 in five-setters at the US Open, also beating Ernests Gulbis in 2014 and John Millman in 2016. It was a confidence-boosting victory for the 2017 Nitto ATP Finals competitor, who had won just three of his previous nine matches when he arrived at Flushing Meadows.

Last October, Johnson earned the biggest win of his career by ATP Ranking, defeating then-World No. 7 Dominic Thiem in Tokyo. And after taking a tight first set in a tie-break, it looked like this year’s Houston and Newport champion would thrill his home crowd to reach the third round of the US Open for the second time.

But ninth-seeded Thiem had too much from the baseline. Johnson rolled his ankle in the middle of the second set, but showed few ill effects as the match wore on. What did affect Johnson were Thiem’s heavy groundstrokes, burying last week’s Winston-Salem finalist in the backhand corner, making it difficult for the World No. 31 to run around and hit his favoured forehand.

And while Johnson battled until the end, Thiem moved on after three hours and 34 minutes thanks to an impressive 67 winners to his opponent’s 49. Thiem also did well finishing points off by approaching to the American’s backhand, winning 41 of 53 net points in the battle.

His next opponent, Fritz, advanced to the third round at the US Open for the first time. After taking a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 lead after two hours and 12 minutes, Jason Kubler retired. The Aussie severely rolled his right ankle running to a forehand deep in the third set.

"It's not the way that you want to be in the third round, but I do feel like I have worked really hard and I deserve it," Fritz said. "So I am happy to be moving forward and excited for my next match."

Thiem and Fritz's only previous FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting came here last year, when the Austrian toughed the home favourite out in a tight four-setter, in which Fritz converted just two of 18 break points.

"We had a really close match. I had triple set point to take it to a fifth," Fritz said. "I'm a much better player than I was last year, so I'm excited for this match."

Anderson will face ninth seed Dominic Thiem for a place in the quarter-finals. Anderson leads Thiem 6-1 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series, but it was Thiem who emerged victorious in their most recent meeting in Madrid three months ago.

Thiem, for the second year in a row, defeated #NextGenATP American Taylor Fritz in four sets to advance in Flushing Meadows. The 24-year-old hit 59 winners, including 18 aces, to overcome Fritz 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-4 in three hours and 19 minutes.

"It was a really tough match. He played very well," said Thiem. "I mean, already last year was a close match against him in the second round. Obviously we hopefully improved in this one year. I expected a tough and close one again, which it was at the end."

Thiem, who has now reached the Round of 16 on four occasions at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, will bid to progress to the quarter-finals for the first time in New York. The Austrian led Juan Martin del Potro 6-1, 6-2 in the fourth round last year and held two match points, before falling in a five-set classic.

"I didn't have any good experiences yet in the fourth round, so I don't rely on them," joked Thiem. "It's always something special for me to reach the second round of a Slam... I will give everything to maybe make the first quarter-final here."

After splitting the opening two sets, Fritz charged into a 4-2 lead in the third set. But Thiem responded in emphatic fashion, winning five of the next seven games to move ahead in a tight third-set tie-break.

With a break in the sixth game, Thiem appeared to be closing in on victory before rain began to fall at 5-3. After a brief interruption, the 24-year-old failed to serve out the match, but broke in the very next game to confirm the win as Fritz misfired on his forehand side.

"[Kevin] is one of the hottest players on Tour right now," said Thiem. "Last four Slams, he made two finals. Out of the big servers, he's the one with the best baseline game and with the best return. You are under pressure basically the whole match. There's a reason why he's No. 5 now. Why he has so much success, because he's just playing amazing."

Fritz was bidding to reach the Round of 16 at a Grand Slam for the first time in his third-round debut. The American currently occupies the seventh and final automatic qualification spot in the ATP Race to Milan.

Early Present: Thiem Reaches Maiden Quarter-final In New York

One day shy of his 25th birthday, Dominic Thiem rewarded himself with an early gift on Sunday at the US Open. The ninth-seeded Austrian, appearing in the Round of 16 for the third time in four visits, hit 41 winners compared to 13 unforced errors to eliminate 2017 finalist Kevin Anderson 7-5, 6-2, 7-6(2) on Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Having lost his opening six FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings against the South African, Thiem has now won both his clashes against Anderson this year. The World No. 9 also defeated Anderson en route to his second straight Mutua Madrid Open final in May.

"I served really, really well today," said Thiem. "Not the best percentage, but I almost made every point in the first serve game. So I didn't face one break point, and I didn't feel so much pressure on service games.

"So it was a little bit easier to play the return games. I could change my return position, and this helped me a lot. And also the court, I think, made a big difference. It's a huge court. I could go very far back like I do on clay usually."

Thiem had never reached a Grand Slam quarter-final away from Roland Garros prior to beating Anderson in three sets. The Austrian was appearing in his sixth Grand Slam fourth round outside of Paris, having also reached the Round of 16 at the Australian Open (0-2) and Wimbledon (0-1).

"I was pretty close last year. It was very painful," said Thiem. "So I'm happy that I made it, and it was an amazing victory over one of the best players right now. Also [it is my] first time in the quarter-finals outside Paris, but most of all, I'm happy with the performance."

Thiem will meet World No. 1 Rafael Nadal in a repeat of this year's Roland Garros final for a semi-final spot. Thiem trails Nadal 3-7 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series.

"We have already played ten times now, but was all the time on clay... It's going to be the first time on hard court which is a completely new experience... I'm really looking forward to playing him on a hard court for the first time," said Thiem. "On clay, I think it's one of the biggest challenges in sports to beat this guy or to compete with this guy. I hope that it's a little bit more comfortable on a hard court, but I'm not sure."


Following 10 consecutive service holds, Thiem stepped up his aggression on his forehand side to great effect at 5-5. The 24-year-old hit his targets, pushing Anderson back in the court before finding the lines to seal the first break.

After serving out the set to 30, Thiem continued to ride the momentum in the second set. The 10-time tour-level titlist won eight of the opening nine points to take a 2-0 lead before doubling his advantage with a second dominant return game to move 5-2 ahead.

Faced with the prospect of a third five-set match in four rounds, Anderson continued to fight throughout the third set. The South African saved the only break point of the set, at 3-3, en route to a crucial tie-break.

From there, Thiem, once again, controlled rallies on his forehand side. The Austrian hit with precision and power to take a 6/2 lead and converted his first match point with a delicate, chipped backhand to outfox Anderson at the net.

"I definitely felt he played a great match. He made life pretty difficult for me," said Anderson. "I thought he defended amazingly. I think a lot of success I have had in the past is I have been able to work points, find the right time to come forward. I still had a pretty good success rate coming forward today, but there were pockets where he had some unbelievable passing shots, made me hit another ball.

"That made things pretty tough... I didn't feel like I played poorly today. I think I did quite a few things well. Hat off to him. I thought he really stepped up. He was definitely the better player today."

Two-time Grand Slam finalist Anderson was bidding to reach his third US Open quarter-final in four years at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The World No. 5, who drops to 22-9 in Flushing Meadows, also reached the last eight in 2015 before his run to the final last year (l. to Nadal).

"I wanted to be here right till the end and put myself in contention of winning my first major," said Anderson. "It wasn't meant to be... I have to leave earlier than I wanted to. As always, I keep my head up, look objectively at all the matches I played, see where I can improve and get ready as quick as I can. Obviously [there are] still a lot of very big tournaments for us throughout the rest of the year. Still a lot of tennis to be played, a lot to play for."

Austrian star says he will take time to reflect on match

There was little consolation for Dominic Thiem in the aftermath of another heart-breaking exit at the US Open.

Last year, it was Juan Martin del Potro who clawed back two match points in the fourth round. At 2:04 a.m. local time on Wednesday, it was World No. 1 Rafael Nadal who savoured his own fifth-set victory.

“It’s going to be stuck in my mind forever,” said Thiem. “I'm going to remember this match, for sure. Tennis is cruel sometimes, because I think this match didn't really deserve a loser. But there has to be one.”

Thiem had recovered from 0/40 at 5-5 in the deciding set, then come within three points of winning the match at 5/4 in the tie-break. He won 171 total points to Nadal’s 165 in their first hard-court meeting, but it was the defending champion who triumphed 0-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-7(4), 7-6(5) in four hours and 48 minutes.

Asked if he would learn anything from the epic encounter, Thiem admitted, “Not really. I would say the first really epic match I played. I played some good ones before, but not that long. Not that long against the great guys on the Grand Slam stage.

“I'm happy that I did this for the first time, even if it went the wrong way. Of course, now I'm devastated a little bit. But in a few days, I will look back and will remember how great it was to play in front of a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium in this great match.”

Thiem will now look to step up his bid for a place at the Nitto ATP Finals for the third consecutive year. The 25-year-old is currently in eight position in the ATP Race To London just 85 points behind seventh-placed Kevin Anderson, who lost in the US Open fourth round.

He has a 42-15 match record on the season, which includes two ATP World Tour titles at the Argentina Open (d. Bedene) and the Open Parc Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Lyon (d. Simon). He also reached the Mutua Madrid Open final (l. to Zverev) and his first Grand Slam championship final at Roland Garros (l. to Nadal).
