Thiem Solid On Serve In Klizan Win

Indian Wells titlist seeks more ATP Masters 1000 silverware

Dominic Thiem needed 84 minutes to confirm his spot in the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters third round on Wednesday, beating Martin Klizan 6-1, 6-4.

Despite entering the match with just one win from four FedEx ATP Head2Head encounters against Klizan, Thiem won 20 of 23 first-serve points and did not face a break point en route to his fourth straight appearance in the third round.

The 25-year-old arrives in Monte-Carlo in form after capturing his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title at the BNP Paribas Open last month (d. Federer). That milestone victory came in the early stages of his new coaching partnership with former World No. 9 Nicolas Massu.

Thiem began working with the Chilean during the 'Golden Swing' in February and the relationship could prove to be even more effective on the red dirt. During his career, Massu lifted five of his six tour-level titles on the surface.


Aiming to reach back-to-back quarter-finals in the Principality, Thiem will meet Dusan Lajovic in the third round. Last year, the Austrian defeated Novak Djokovic in three sets to reach his maiden quarter-final at the Monte-Carlo Country Club, before falling to eventual champion Rafael Nadal.

Lajovic overcame 2017 semi-finalist David Goffin 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 28 minutes. The World No. 48 converted four of eight break points to book a sixth FedEx ATP Head2Head clash against Thiem. The World No. 4 owns an unbeaten 5-0 record against Lajovic, with each of those meetings coming on clay.

Zverev & Thiem Visit FC Barcelona

Before they hit the tennis courts at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem hit the football field on Sunday to meet the players of FC Barcelona.
The second and third seeds at the ATP 500 event, respectively, toured the grounds of the Ciutat Esportiva. Gerard Pique and other team members promised to return the favour and visit the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona 1899 to catch the ATP Tour action this week.
“I think everyone who comes from Germany has to be a soccer fan,” joked Zverev. “[Meeting] some of the players was very exciting. This is one of the best clubs in the world, so to see how they function and see the practice grounds was amazing.”

Thiem was among the players who attended Saturday’s league game between FC Barcelona and Real Sociedad. They also had the chance to meet the club’s president, Josep Maria Bartomeu.
“I love football and I just met some of the best players in the world. They’re all really nice,” said Thiem. “It was good to experience the practice grounds and the game yesterday, so it couldn’t be better for a football fan like me.”
Zverev will start his week against Nicolas Jarry of Chile or Marcel Granollers of Spain, while Thiem begins his Barcelona campaign against Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan or Diego Schwartzman of Argentina.

Thiem Breezes Past Schwartzman In Barcelona

Third seed Dominic Thiem ended a two-match losing streak against Argentina's Diego Schwartzman 6-3, 6-3 on Tuesday to reach the third round of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell.
The 25-year-old Austrian broke Schwartzman six times as the Argentine struggled with his serve, winning just over half of his first-serve points and hitting seven double faults.

Thiem made the 2017 Barcelona final (l. to Nadal) and will next meet home favourite Jaume Munar, who made the semi-finals of the 2018 Next Gen ATP Finals last November.
Munar ousted #NextGenATP American Frances Tiafoe, the 14th seed, 6-4, 6-3 to improve his FedEx ATP Head2Head advantage against Tiafoe to 2-0, which also includes his win at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan.
To start his clay-court season, the 21-year-old Munar upset No. 3 Alexander Zverev en route to the quarter-finals of the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech. Last week, the Spaniard made the second round (l. to Coric) of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters.
German Jan-Lennard Struff upset 10th seed David Goffin of Belgium 7-6(6), 6-3 and will meet fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, who broke four times and dismissed Hungarian Marton Fucsovics 6-3, 6-4.

Nadal Holds Off Struff, To Face Thiem Next

In his first meeting against Rafael Nadal, Jan-Lennard Struff had the right game plan – serve and volley and hit every ball as hard as he could. But Nadal weathered Struff's most aggressive best, and is now two wins away from a record-setting 12th Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell title.

The 32-year-old Spaniard made his 12th Barcelona semi-final on Friday, overcoming the big-hitting Struff 7-5, 7-5 on Pista Rafa Nadal. Nadal has never lost in a Barcelona semi-final (11-0), but will have a challenge on his hands when he faces fifth seed Dominic Thiem. The Austrian battled past Argentine Guido Pella 7-5, 6-2.

"It was a pressure match because he's a very aggressive player, difficult to be on rhythm with him. I'm happy for the victory, happy to find a way to win that match and I hope to be ready for the semi-finals," Nadal said. "I'm trying to be focused every single moment because one mistake, and you lose the set against this kind of player. I'm happy the way that I managed it."

Nadal leads his FedEx ATP Head2Head series against Thiem 8-3, but the Austrian is the only player to have beaten Nadal on clay the past two seasons (2018 Madrid, 2017 Rome). Thiem also pushed Nadal to five sets during their epic US Open quarter-final last year.

"It's always one of the biggest challenges possible in tennis to play Rafa on clay, to play him at the tournament which he won already 11 times, with his own crowd in the back, with his Spanish crowd. So it's going to be unbelievably tough. But we had great matches in the past, and I think we are both playing quite well so I hope that's the same case tomorrow, and I think we can expect a good match," Thiem said.

Struff had made his second quarter-final of the season by crushing 31 winners, including 18 from his forehand, against last year's finalist and No. 8 Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece. The German knew his quarter-final against Nadal would be short-lived if he tried to hang with Nadal from the back of the court, so every opportunity the 6'5” German had – while serving or facing a short ball – he raced forward.


Nadal broke in the fourth game with a first-serve return winner that landed just inside the baseline, but Struff broke back in the seventh game with an aggressive return down the line. Nadal, however, with the crowd coming alive, cranked up his level to break to love in the 12th game and take the opener.

Struff wisely stuck to his strategy in the second, but he couldn't find a way into any Nadal service games. The Spaniard landed 83 per cent of his first serves in the second set, winning 79 per cent of those points, and broke Struff once more in the 12th game.

Pella had beaten Thiem on clay before, in Rio de Janeiro two years ago. The Argentine also entered their quarter-final with the most ATP Tour wins on the surface this year, with 17. But Thiem won 45 per cent of his return points to triumph in one hour and 41 minutes.

Austrian to play Medvedev for ATP 500 title
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Dominic Thiem stuck to his aggressive game plan against Rafael Nadal to beat the 11-time Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell champion 6-4, 6-4 on Saturday and reach the ATP 500 final.

It's the fourth time in as many years Thiem has beaten Nadal on clay, and the first time Nadal has lost in the semi-finals or finals of his home tournament. The Spaniard had been 22-0 in matches and 46-1 in sets during Barcelona semi-finals and finals.

But Thiem, who was the only player to beat Nadal on clay in 2017 and 2018, played fearlessly once more against the top seed, pinning the Spaniard behind the baseline and pounding inside-out forehands. He joined Novak Djokovic as the only players to have beaten Nadal on clay four times.

“I'm always super proud if I beat him because he's the best player ever on this surface, and it's always very special to beat him here on clay. We always had great matches in the past, and also today was very good and I was more lucky today and I got the win,” Thiem said.

The 2017 finalist (l. to Nadal) will face Russian Daniil Medvedev with his third ATP 500 title on the line (2016 Acapulco, 2017 Rio). Medvedev beat No. 7 Kei Nishikori 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 to make his first clay-court final.

The 23-year-old leads the ATP Tour with 25 wins, including eight on clay (8-1). Before last week’s Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, Medvedev was 2-11 on the red dirt. Thiem leads their FedEx ATP Head2Head series 1-0, a three-set win last year at the St. Petersburg Open.

“It's such a traditional tournament. I loved to play the finals here two years ago, and of course I try to go one step further tomorrow. But Daniil is I think in the best shape of his life. If I see the names of who won here, this tournament, of course I would love to be there as well," Thiem said.

Thiem started quickly, breaking when Nadal tossed in a loose service game at 2-2. Nadal double faulted twice, including at 30/40.

Thiem had four more break points as Nadal served at 2-4, but the Spaniard saved them all during a 14-minute game. But as the Spanish fans smelled a comeback, Thiem avoided any slump and held to take the opener.

The Austrian was in attack mode all match, delivering deep, heavy balls to Nadal, who struggled to take control in baseline rallies. And at the net, Thiem was happy to put the point away, winning nine of 12 net points.

Thiem broke once more in the second and dug himself out of trouble at 4-3, 15/30, and again while serving for the set at 5-4, 0/40. Thiem hadn't faced a break point all match until the final game, but saved all three, including the third with an ace.

To dla mnie wielka chwila - powiedział Dominic Thiem podczas ceremonii dekoracji. Nawiązał tym samym do sukcesów swojego rodaka Thomasa Mustera, który triumfował w Barcelonie w latach 1995-1996.
W niedzielnym finale Austriak pokonał Daniła Miedwiediewa 6:4, 6:0. W pierwszej partii odrobił stratę przełamania, a w drugim secie nie dał już żadnych szans rywalowi. - Starałem się dać z siebie wszystko, ale Dominic był za mocny. Były takie momenty, że wygranie punktu było wielkim osiągnięciem - wyznał Rosjanin, który w drugiej części spotkania zdobył zaledwie pięć punktów.

Po zwycięstwie w Indian Wells Thiem okazał się najlepszy w Barcelonie. Dzięki temu ma teraz na koncie 13 tytułów zawodów głównego cyklu. W przyszłym tygodniu zagra w Madrycie, gdzie dwukrotnie dochodził do finału. - Tytuł na pewno doda mi pewności, dlatego będę w dobrym nastroju przed występem w Madrycie. Ale w tenisie szczególną rzeczą jest to, że zacznę tam od zera. Obsada zawodów będzie bardzo mocna, zatem będę musiał być gotowy od pierwszego punktu - stwierdził piąty obecnie tenisista świata.
