Thiem Reaches Second Kitzbühel Final

A lot has changed for Dominic Thiem since he reached his maiden ATP Tour final at the Generali Open in 2014. The Austrian has captured 13 tour-level trophies, contested two Roland Garros finals and reached a career-high No. 4 in the ATP Rankings.
But one thing remains the same. The Austrian is still seeking his first tour-level trophy on home soil. On Friday, he moved one win away from achieving that feat in Kitzbühel after overcoming Lorenzo Sonego 6-3, 7-6(6).
“It is amazing [to be in the final]. [It is my] second time after five years ago, which is amazing,” said Thiem. “All three matches had a great atmosphere with a sold-out centre court. It is a big childhood dream of mine to win this tournament. I will try everything to get it done tomorrow.”
The 25-year-old won 73 per cent of service points (49/67) to advance to his fourth tour-level championship match of the year (2-1) after one hour and 42 minutes. Thiem has now won 10 matches at this ATP 250 tournament (10-7) and improves to 27-11 this season.

Following a competitive opening six games, Thiem claimed 12 of the next 14 points to charge into a one-set lead. The World No. 4 returned from behind the baseline, hitting with depth to neutralise rallies before stepping up the court to pressure his opponent into crucial errors.
After trading early breaks, a tie-break was needed to decide the winner of the second set. Following a rain delay, Thiem rallied from 1/4 down to claim victory as Sonego fired a backhand return beyond the baseline.

Thiem Triumphs On Home Soil In Kitzbühel

Austrian captures third title of the year

Five years after reaching his maiden ATP Tour final at the Generali Open, Dominic Thiem defeated Albert Ramos-Vinolas 7-6(0), 6-1 to lift his first title on home soil at the ATP 250 event.

The World No. 4, who fell in three sets to David Goffin in the 2014 championship match, saved all six break points he faced to overcome the Gstaad champion after one hour and 38 minutes. Thiem is only the second Austrian player to lift the title in Kitzbühel, following in the footsteps of former World No. 1 and 1993 champion Thomas Muster.

Thiem also joins his coach, Nicolas Massu, as a champion at the clay-court tournament. Massu beat Gaston Gaudio of Argentina to lift the trophy in 2004.

The 25-year-old, who improves to 28-11 this season, has claimed three titles from four tour-level championship matches in 2019. Thiem lifted his maiden ATP Masters 1000 trophy at the BNP Paribas Open (d. Federer) and also triumphed at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell (d. Medvedev), before falling to Rafael Nadal in his second straight final at Roland Garros in June.

In a marathon first set, which featured an extended rain delay at 4-5, Thiem was forced to save five break points en route to a tie-break. From there, the World No. 4 raised his level to extract crucial errors from his opponent and earn a 6/0 lead. Thiem wrapped up the set after 68 minutes by firing a forehand winner down the line.

The 14-time tour-level titlist rode the momentum into the second set, dropping just two of the opening 14 points to establish a 3-0 lead. Thiem returned with height and depth from behind the baseline to neutralise rallies, before stepping in to dictate play as Ramos-Vinolas committed forehand errors.

A second break followed for Thiem and the Austrian captured the title on his first championship point to the delight of the home crowd. The top seed collapsed to the clay as Ramos-Vinolas fired a forehand return beyond the baseline.

Ramos-Vinolas was aiming to win his second title in as many weeks on the ATP Tour. Last week, the Spaniard did not drop a set en route to his second tour-level crown at the J. Safra Sarasin Swiss Open Gstaad.

Thiem receives 250 ATP Ranking points and collects €90,390 in prize money. Ramos-Vinolas gains 150 ATP Ranking points and earns €48,870.

Thiem Ends Shapovalov's Montreal Run

The stage was set for Denis Shapovalov to begin another memorable Montreal run on Wednesday. The #NextGenATP Canadian had the crowd behind him at the Coupe Rogers – a given in Canada – and a Top 5 opponent in Dominic Thiem, who hadn't played a hard-court match since March and had been winless in Canada (0-5).

Thiem, however, had his own ATP Masters 1000 run in mind. The Austrian held off Shapovalov and his cadre of fans on Court Central 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to end his winless streak at Canadian Masters 1000 events.

"Every win is special in these tournaments because it's only against great opponents," Thiem said. "Against Denis, it was special because he's a local hero. All the crowd was supporting him, so it was tough."

The second seed saved four of five break points and benefitted from some untimely unforced errors from Shapovalov, who has lost six of his past seven matches. The 20-year-old double faulted to get broken at 4-4 in the opening set, but Shapovalov came back strong in the second, ripping forehands and engaging the crowd with fist pumps.

The two were on serve at 3-4 in the third but Shapovalov dumped an overhead into the net to give Thiem the break and an opportunity to serve out the match. Shapovalov, however, said he'll take confidence from pushing the World No. 4.

"I think it was a great match for me confidence-wise. I showed myself that my level's there, that I'm able to compete against a player like this and have chances to beat him," Shapovalov said.

Thiem pushed his winning streak to five after taking home the Generali Open crown on Saturday in Kitzbuhel. "It's never easy, the smashes. Maybe it was a little bit windy. Already the lights were on. These kinds of smashes, especially in a tough situation where you're under lot of pressure, they look way easier than they are," he said.

It wasn’t easy but fleet of foot, caressed groundstroke winners at close quarters and match sharpness proved to be the difference for Dominic Thiem on Thursday when he negotiated a tough test against Marin Cilic at the Coupe Rogers.

Thiem stared down all nine break points he faced — four at 3-3 in the first set and five in the second set at 0-1 (three) and 5-4 (two) — to win 7-6(7), 6-4 over one hour and 53 minutes for a place in the third round.

Clever changes of pace and aggressive ball-striking from Cilic kept Thiem on his toes, but in the first set tie-break featuring two momentum shifts, it was the Austrian’s consistency that was decisive.

Having recovered from 15/40 in his first service game of the second set, Thiem pounced with terrific length on his groundstroke returns and broke for a 2-1 advantage with a fine cross-court forehand winner in the service that left Cilic flat-footed at the net. Later, at 5-4, he weathered another storm from 15/40 and closed out his 31st win of 2019 on his fourth match point.

Second seed Thiem, who had gone 0-5 in previous appearances at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Canada, is building up a head of steam ahead of his quarter-final against eighth-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev, who knocked out Cristian Garin of Chile 6-3, 6-3 in 70 minutes. Both Thiem and Medvedev are bidding to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals, to be held at The O2 in London from 10-17 November. Thiem leads 2-0 in their FedEx ATPHead2Head series.

The 25-year-old Thiem is now six matches unbeaten, which includes his 14th ATP Tour title last week at the Generali Open in Kitzbuhel (d. Ramos-Vinolas). Thiem Extends Davis Cup Singles Winning Streak To Nine

Dominic Thiem gave Austria a point on Friday in Davis Cup Group I action, helping his country to a split of the opening day’s rubbers in Espoo, Finland.

Thiem, who is trying to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals for the fourth consecutive year, beat World No. 551 Patrik Niklas-Salminen 6-3, 6-4 after a tough one-hour, 36-minute battle. The 14-time ATP Tour titlist, who has now won nine straight Davis Cup singles matches, broke serve on two of his nine opportunities, and he saved the three chances his Finnish opponent earned.
