Thiem On Indian Wells Breakthrough: 'It Feels Unreal'

The Austrian completed a dream fortnight on Sunday at the BNP Paribas Open by toppling Roger Federer for his first ATP Masters 1000 title. Fans perhaps best know Thiem for his clay-court prowess, but the high-bouncing hard courts in Indian Wells suited his game perfectly and his skills on slower surfaces seamlessly transferred over.

“It feels unreal what happened in these 10 days. I came with really bad form in all categories and now I'm the champion of Indian Wells,” said Thiem. “It's amazing that I did my first big title here on a different surface than clay. I turned a pretty bad start to the season to a very good one."

After a first-round exit last month at the Rio Open presented by Claro, Thiem was able to prepare for nearly two weeks in Indian Wells with new coach Nicolas Massu. The hours logged on the practise court were evident and Thiem delivered a high-quality brand of attacking tennis that gave no indication of his 3-4 record to start the season.

Perhaps the most satisfying part of his title run is who he defeated. After beating Milos Raonic in the semi-finals for the first time in their three FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings, Thiem took out Federer for the first time on a hard court. He became one of at least five players to defeat Federer on all three surfaces, joining Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Patrick Rafter.

But Thiem was quick to praise Federer after the match and said he will likely never catch up to the Swiss star’s 100 tour-level singles titles. He also noted how difficult it still is to beat Federer, in part because of everything he’s accomplished throughout his career.

“He's such a legend. For all of us younger players, it's a privilege to still be able to compete with him and play against him in the finals of big tournaments like this one,” said Thiem. “Against Roger, Rafa, Novak, and some other guys, you have to beat not only the player, but also the great aura they have and all these titles they have won. You have to play doubly good to beat them.”

Thiem’s victory at Indian Wells moves him up to No. 4 in the ATP Rankings, matching his career-best standing. He also jumps well inside the Top 8 of the ATP Race To London. But with his first match at the Miami Open presented by Itau less than a week away, Thiem is already looking forward to hitting the practise courts and continuing his top form.

“Of course, the title is amazing [and] it will stay there forever,” said Thiem. “But it would be nice if I could hold this shape and all of these positive emotions in the next tournament and every tournament I play.”

No Rest For Thiem As Focus Shifts To Miami

There has been no big celebration for Dominic Thiem since he lifted his first ATP Masters 1000 trophy on Sunday. More an immediate shift in thoughts from the BNP Paribas Open to the Miami Open presented by Itau.
Having left the Indian Wells Tennis Garden at nine o’clock on Sunday night, the Austrian was in bed by midnight prior to a flight the next day across the United States.
“I left Indian Wells as the champion of this huge tournament, so it made me happy almost like never before in my tennis career,” Thiem told reporters in Miami on Wednesday. “I love the Indian Wells title more because it’s the first big title of my career. I love the Roland Garros final as well, but I left that campaign with a loss and that’s never a nice feeling.”
Renowned for his clay prowess, with nine of his 12 ATP Tour titles on red dirt, the 25-year-old insists the perception of himself, and what he is capable of, has not changed despite the biggest triumph of his career and a four-place rise to No. 4 in the ATP Rankings.
“It didn’t really change anything because these tournaments are very tough from the beginning,” said Thiem. “Just like at Indian Wells, I’m just trying to be focused and [get] fully into the tournament from the first ball.”

Having trained with former World No. 9 Nicolas Massu in the build-up to the first ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the season, Thiem insists the Chilean has provided a welcome boost in addition to his work with long-time coach Gunter Bresnik.
“He’s giving a lot of positive energy in between points,” admitted Thiem. “We had good practise sessions during the 12 or 13 days before Indian Wells, and I got back in shape, so it’s working great so far.”
In addition to recovering his fitness, Massu also helped Thiem recover his down-the-line backhand. His weapon of choice was on full display in Indian Wells as he consistently befuddled his opponents. Just as they expected him to go crosscourt, he would change direction at the final moment and leave them on the wrong foot.
"I remember when I played against Stan Wawrinka once, sometimes I knew [a down-the-line backhand] was coming and I still couldn’t do anything about it. It’s tricky. There are times when you’re running down the line and it’s going crosscourt," said Thiem. "It’s a unique shot because nobody is expecting it or knows where it’s going. If it goes in, it’s a winner most of the time. It’s a great feeling and good for the confidence to know you can hit a winner at any point in the match."
Over the next 10 days, Thiem, who has jumped 85 places to No. 5 in the 2019 ATP Race To London, will attempt to extend his run of form in Miami, in a bid to become the eighth player to complete the Indian Wells-Miami title double.

Massu On Thiem: "Ask Dom To Do Something And He'll Do It – Just Better"

Former World No. 9 discusses his short, but already productive time with the BNP Paribas Open champion

In the past 40 days, only wonderful things have happened for me. As captain of the Chilean Davis Cup team, I helped my country reach the World Group stage for the first time since 2011. Soon after that, I began working with Dominic Thiem at the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires. I accompanied him to Rio de Janeiro (for the Rio Open presented by Claro) a week later and now we're here in the United States. The most incredible thing is that in just our third tournament together, at a time when we're still getting to know each other, Dominic has won his first ATP Masters 1000 title, and he did it on a hard court at the BNP Paribas Open [d. Roger Federer 3-6, 6-3, 7-5]. One of the reasons why he asked me to join his team in the first place; was because he felt that I could help bring his hard-court game up to speed with his very accomplished clay-court game.

What's most impressive is that Dominic is producing the intended results so quickly. It even surprised me because it's the first time I've been in this situation and under these circumstances as a coach, where I've been brought in for a very specific role.

Besides being Davis Cup captain, I have a tennis academy in Chile and I manage players’, but I don't travel with them. So, it's amazing that after a few weeks of accompanying Dom, we won in Indian Wells. I cannot be any happier; it feels great to help him achieve his goals.

And to think, all of this came together just recently. Thiem didn't compete for Austria in the Davis Cup tie against Chile, but his coach, Gunter Bresnik, reached out to me at one point. I joined Dominic's team during the Argentina Open soon after. Even though we never actually met prior to working together, I had been following Dominic’s career for a long time and admired his game. I considered him championship material. What I liked most was the sense of family among Team Thiem. Having worked with other teams before, I was delighted by how Dominic's group had a sense of unity. They opened all doors to me and accommodated me in every way possible, to ensure that I had the tools to get the job done.

The first thing I noticed about Dom as a player was that he needed some time to heal. His body was a little worn by the end of last season and it became more noticeable at the start of this year. By the time we got to Buenos Aires, Dom was just getting out of recovery mode and needed to build his strength, both physically and mentally. His loss earlier on in Rio (l. to Laslo Dere 6-3, 6-3) was a good thing, as it gave us time to get to Indian Wells early and continue the rebuilding process.

It was then that I recommended fitness therapy coach Duglas Cordero to work with our team. Duglas is an experienced physical trainer; he's worked with Fabio Fognini and I spent time with him during my professional career. This allowed Dom’s physiotherapist, Alex Stober, to handle one set of roles and for Duglas to take on another and guarantee we got our player as fit as possible. I continued my part in developing his game for the hard courts. I feel that between the three of us, we made an immediate impact. As Thiem put it, he started looking at his game in a different way and because of very precise planning, an intense drive and strong work ethic — all at a very high level — the results showed quickly. Add to that the passion and positive energy we bring, and you can see why his game has grown in such a short amount of time.

The BNP Paribas Open was the perfect place for Thiem to demonstrate how far he had come in such a short space of time. Throughout the tournament, I contributed by instructing him to make small adjustments, minor tweaks that would make a lot of difference on Indian Wells' hard courts. I was surprised by how quickly he picked up on things; he has an incredible ability to learn something and immediately apply it during a match. He's an amazing talent and extremely disciplined. Ask Dom to do something and he'll do it — just better. It's a privilege as a coach to work with a player of that calibre.

We discussed a lot of things as he progressed through the tournament. We approached each match with its own game plan. I explained to him that in addition to improving his overall game, he needed to work on his return of serve. I felt he needed to step closer to the baseline, even inside of it, more often. If you look back at replays of his matches, you'll notice as the deeper he got into the tournament, the closer he got to the baseline while returning serves.

In addition to his return game, Dom and I spent a lot of time talking about what types of shots to use and when to execute them. When to hit high, looping balls; when to go with the slice; when to use topspin or to surprise with a drop shot. We took a close look at all his weapons and broke down when they would be most effective. If you look back at the most critical points throughout the tournament, you'll notice those are when Dom played at his best. It goes to show he's got a champion's mentality. It's those little alterations that make a huge difference to a player like Dom. Even so, I'm still surprised at what a spectacular talent he is. Dom's back to a career-high No. 4 (which he first attained on 13 November 2017) and feeling at an all-time high. That makes my life much easier as a coach.

I feel a close connection with Dominic's game and I'm able to identify key areas of it every day. I see a lot in his game that resembles my own game and the way I played when I was on tour. He's got fluid footwork; he's always moving into position and maneuvering the ball around the court to line up his best shots. We've got different personalities, of course. After all, he's Austrian and I'm Chilean. But maybe that's why we complement each other. It's still hard to believe that a little over a month ago, we didn't even know one another personally. Since then, we've bonded as a team. I don't change my ways for anyone and in this case, that isn't even an afterthought. I'm working with an incredible talent.

Thiem Downplays Early Exit In Miami

Sometimes a loss doesn’t need to be overanalysed.
Dominic Thiem refused to link his opening-round exit on Friday at the Miami Open presented by Itau to a comedown after winning his first ATP Masters 1000 title just days earlier at the BNP Paribas Open. The third seed gave full credit to his opponent, Hubert Hurkacz of Poland, and said he put in an ordinary performance on a day when he needed to be great.
“I had a lot of emotions the last week, but I still had three or four days since then and that should be enough,” said Thiem. “There were some moments like when he gave me the break (at 1-1 in the second set) and I should have continued [with the momentum], but in general, he was just better. I wasn’t quite on my level like last week, but it was an okay match for me.”
Hurkacz isn’t an opponent anyone wants to face these days. The 22-year-old defeated Kei Nishikori en route to his first Masters 1000 quarter-final last week in Indian Wells (l. to Federer) and has a jumped more than 30 spots in the ATP Rankings this year to his current career-high standing of No. 54.
“His first serve is very tough to read and he returned well in situations when he needed it,” said Thiem. "My serve was not big enough, but he put a lot of pressure on it and he deserved to win.”

Location may have also played a role in Friday’s outcome. The high-bouncing courts at Indian Wells suit Thiem’s game perfectly, but he has struggled in Miami in recent years. Although he reached the quarter-finals in 2015, he now sports a 7-5 record at this event and has lost his past two matches here.
But rather than dwell on defeat, Thiem will turn his attention to the clay-court season he has historically excelled in. Last year, he took the title at the Open Parc Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Lyon (d. Simon) and finished runner-up at Roland Garros (l. Nadal) and the Mutua Madrid Open (l. Zverev).
He will begin his clay season in earnest next month at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters. With his hard-court success in Indian Wells, his fans have plenty of reason to be excited about what he can do on his favourite surface.
"Now it’s clay court time,” said Thiem pointedly. “I’ll go back to Europe soon, rest for a few days and prepare for Europe.”

Dominic Thiem: 'I Expect A Lot

After lifting his first ATP Masters 1000 title at the BNP Paribas Open last month, Dominic Thiem enters the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters with high expectations.

The World No. 5, who reached his maiden Grand Slam final at Roland Garros last year (l. to Nadal), has lifted eight of his 12 ATP Tour titles on clay and looks set for another successful campaign on the surface this year. But the Austrian is well aware that despite his high standards, it will require his best level to succeed in a packed draw at the first Masters 1000 event of the European clay swing.

"I expect a lot, of course, like in every clay-court season... [There are] only strong tournaments and, especially here, the draw is a joke. It is so strong," said Thiem, who will open his tournament against Slovak Martin Klizan or Argentine qualifier Federico Delbonis. "In general, the level of men's tennis is pretty high at the moment. I think everybody has to be 'full power on' from the first point of every match, myself as well. That is what I will try [to do] and I hope good things are coming in this clay-court season."


Last year, Thiem advanced to his first quarter-final at the Monte-Carlo Country Club. The Austrian star defeated current World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in three sets to reach the last eight before falling to eventual champion Rafael Nadal. One year on, Thiem shared his belief that while Nadal remains the man to beat on clay, he should also expect to face greater challenges on the surface.

"I think that as long as Rafa is playing, he will always be the top favourite for any clay-court title, but I think there are more serious challenges to him than the in past years," Thiem said. "Sascha [Zverev is] always [a threat] and Novak is back on the top of his game and, I hope, me. There are the really young guys like Felix, I think he likes clay a lot. He played amazing in Miami and [there are] also other very young guys like Stefanos and Shapovalov. There are many challenges for Rafa."

After strong starts to the 2019 ATP Tour season, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov occupy the top three positions in the ATP Race To Milan. When Thiem was asked to compare his abilities to theirs at a similar age, the 25-year-old heaped praise on the trio of #NextGenATP stars for their quick rise up the ATP Rankings.

"Compared to [Auger-Aliassime, Tsitsipas and Shapovalov], I was really bad at 18," said Thiem. "They are so good already. They are already [around] the Top 20, Top 30. When I was 18, I was ranked No. 700 or something. I think time changed again. When I broke into the Top 100, I was the [second] youngest guy there."

Following success at Indian Wells in the early stages of their partnership, Thiem is confident that the addition of former World No. 9 Nicolas Massu to his coaching team will take his game to the next level on clay. The Chilean lifted five of his six tour-level titles on the red dirt.

"I started a relationship with Nico [Massu] in Rio and Buenos Aires and then, of course, I did great practice with him before Indian Wells where I achieved this title," said Thiem. "I was thinking it was a great relationship with him and he can add many good things to my game. He grew up on clay, it was his favourite surface. So I expect good things to happen in this relationship, on this surface and in this period of the year."

Thiem Leaving His Mark On Clay

Dominic Thiem, the fourth seed at this week’s Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, captured his first ATP Masters 1000 title at the BNP Paribas Open, becoming just the second Austrian to triumph at that level (also Thomas Muster). The only surprise was that his first Masters 1000 triumph did not come on clay.

Thiem is on pace to become one of the most successful clay-court players of this generation, if not in the Open Era. While Rafael Nadal has overshadowed the 25-year-old with his dominance on the surface throughout his career, winning 23 of his record 33 Masters 1000 trophies on clay, Thiem has quickly moved up the clay-court record books.


Among active players, Thiem has the fourth-highest winning percentage on clay according to the FedEx ATP Performance Zone, winning more than 74 per cent of his matches on the surface.

The only three players who have won on clay at a greater pace are the ‘Big Three’ of Nadal (92%), World No. 1 Novak Djokovic (79%) and Roger Federer (76%). Thiem is the only player to defeat Nadal on the red dirt over the past two seasons. The Spaniard holds a 50-2 record on clay since 2017.

“It’s always my most important part of the season with my biggest highlight of the year, Roland Garros, coming up,” Thiem said of the European clay swing, beginning with Monte-Carlo. “There are so many points to play for and only great tournaments.”

Furthermore, only five active players own more clay-court titles than eight-time ATP Tour clay-court champion Thiem — Nadal (57), Djokovic (13), David Ferrer (13), Federer (11) and Tommy Robredo (11) — and they are all at least six years older than him. The Austrian is just three titles away from Federer, who won his first ATP Tour trophy on clay when Thiem was only eight years old.

Last year’s Roland Garros finalist currently sits 16th in the Open Era in clay-court winning percentage, ahead of former World No. 1s Juan Carlos Ferrero, Andre Agassi and John McEnroe.
The three-time Nitto ATP Finals qualifier has made the final at the Mutua Madrid Open — one of three clay-court Masters 1000 tournaments — in each of the past two years. He will try to advance that far in Monte-Carlo for the first time. The fourth seed will play Slovak Martin Klizan or Argentine qualifier Federico Delbonis in the first round.
