Thiem's Journey 'From Heaven To Hell' In The Roland Garros Final

Austrian reflects after losing second straight Roland Garros final
In just more than 24 hours, Dominic Thiem has experienced the widest range of emotions possible. On Saturday, the 25-year-old completed an epic five-set victory against World No. 1 Novak Djokovic to become the first Austrian to reach multiple Grand Slam finals. But on Sunday, after winning the second set of the championship match against now 12-time champion Rafael Nadal — the only set he has won in Paris against the Spaniard — the fourth seed managed to win just two games in the final two sets combined en route to a defeat.

“I just came from heaven to hell,” Thiem told NBC’s John McEnroe after the trophy ceremony. “But it’s tough right now because you have to beat seven good players to win this tournament and towards the end you have to beat one or two legends with 15-plus Grand Slams and if you’re not 100 per cent in every department, you’re not going to make it.”

After dropping a set in each of his first three matches this fortnight, Thiem found his rhythm, beating former World No. 6 Gael Monfils and then Russian Karen Khachanov, who will reach a career-high World No. 9 Monday, without losing more than four games in a set. Then he raised his level even more to oust Djokovic. But Nadal still stood between the Austrian and the Coupe des Mousquetaires.

“That's a unique and also brutal thing, I guess, in our sport, in tennis, that I won six amazing matches. I beat yesterday one of the biggest legends of our game. Not even 24 hours later, I have to step on court against another amazing legend of our game, against the best clay-court player of all time,” Thiem said. “That also shows how difficult nowadays it is to win a Grand Slam. That's what I meant yesterday. I was feeling so happy, with such a good win, and today, of course, I lost. I failed to make my biggest dream in my tennis life come true, so I don't feel that good like yesterday.”

There’s no doubt that Thiem enjoyed a magnificent run at Roland Garros. His semi-final victory was a roller coaster in itself, as Thiem let slip two match points on his serve at 5-3 in the fifth set against Djokovic, before settling down to end the Serbian’s 26-match major winning streak and stop the top seed’s dream of capturing a fourth consecutive Slam.

That was the World No. 4’s third straight day of action, and his match against Nadal was his fourth in a row. But Thiem was adamant that he lost against Nadal because the legendary lefty was simply the better player.

“It was a Grand Slam final, so I didn’t really feel tired, but of course it’s going to leave some traces, all these past four days and all the long tournament,” Thiem told McEnroe. “But yeah, I played against a guy who’s won this tournament 12 times, so that’s not the reason why I lost.”

Thiem was closer than he’s ever been against Nadal at Roland Garros, trading blow for blow with the 33-year-old through two sets. In their three previous FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings on the Parisian terre battue, Thiem had not won more than four games in a set. But all it took Sunday was one slip — in this case a sloppy service game to open the third set — for Nadal to capitalise.

“I closed [the second set] out 7-5 and then I dropped in my game for some reason. It’s not that bad against some other guys,” Thiem said on NBC. “But Rafa stepped on me and that’s why he’s too good.”

This doesn’t take away from Thiem’s strong year, though. He won his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title at the BNP Paribas Open, and defeated Nadal en route to claiming the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell trophy. Thiem leaves Paris in fourth place in the ATP Race To London.

“I had, until now, my best year for sure. I have won Indian Wells, Barcelona, finals again here. Even though I didn't win the tournament, still, two years finals in a row, it's nice. I think that I developed my game. I was also closer than last year in the finals, I have the feeling, I mean, especially in the first two sets,” Thiem said. “So I'm on the right way. And I failed today, but my goal and my dream is still to win this tournament or to win a Grand Slam tournament. I will try my best next year again.

“I gave everything I had in these two weeks. That's all what I could do. Was not enough at the end, but I went very far.”

The action will come thick and fast at The Championships, so grab some popcorn and get ready to settle in for a number of intriguing first-round matches at the All England Club, Wimbledon.

[4] Kevin Anderson vs. Pierre-Hugues Herbert — FedEx ATP Head2Head 1-0
Anderson rode on a crest of a wave into last year’s Wimbledon final, which included victories over Roger Federer and John Isner, in an epic 26-24 fifth-set finish. However, the fourth-seeded South African has found 2019 a lot tougher, because of a nagging right elbow injury that has curtailed his schedule to just four tournaments. Last week, Anderson returned at the Fever-Tree Championships, losing to eventual finalist Gilles Simon in the second round, but will prepare wisely when he faces Herbert, who will also partner Andy Murray at SW19 next week. Three summers ago, Anderson beat Herbert 6-4, 7-5 in the Winston-Salem Open final, but for the majority of 2019 Herbert has narrowed his focus to singles play and the decision has paid dividends with a final run at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier (l. to Tsonga), in addition to two semi-final exits at the Hungarian Open (l. to Krajinovic) and last week’s NOVENTI OPEN in Halle (l. to Federer).

Thiem, more accustomed to clay-court excellence with two straight Roland Garros final runs, is developing an all-court game in 2019 under the guidance of Nicolas Massu, with victory at his first ATP Masters 1000 tournament on the hard courts of the BNP Paribas Open, and the clay of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell (d. Nadal in SFs, Medvedev in final). With a Wimbledon-best fourth-round showing in 2018, Thiem faces 2017 semi-finalist Querrey, who has a 19-11 record at The Championships and the 2010 Fever-Tree Championships title to his name. Thiem leads 3-1 in their career series, but the pair has not met before on grass courts. Expect World No. 79 Querrey to rise to the occasion.

Tiafoe’s form may have been patchy in recent tournaments, 1-4 since the Mutua Madrid Open, but the 21-year-old American will be sure to pose a threat to first-round opponent No. 12 seed Fognini, two years on from their five-set clash in the 2017 Roland Garros first round. Tiafoe, who lost to Karen Khachanov in last year’s Wimbledon third round, can draw on the confidence he gained from reaching the Australian Open quarter-finals (l. to Nadal) – his first at a Grand Slam championship – in January. The 32-year-old Fognini, winner of his first ATP Masters 1000 crown at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters in April (d. Lajovic), has reached the third round on four occasions in 10 visits to the All England Club, but has not played an ATP Tour grass event, in the build-up to a Wimbledon appearance since 2013 at Eastbourne (l. to Dodig in the quarter-finals).

It’s been quite the six months for Marin Cilic, who has recorded consecutive wins at two of his 10 tournaments in 2019 (10-9 match record). But in walking through the Doherty Gates on Church Road in Wimbledon, the Croatian will grow in confidence, two years on from his runner-up finish to Roger Federer. Cilic, who lost to Guido Pella over five sets in last year’s second round, will meet Mannarino for the third time. World No. 38 Mannarino comes in with his own grass-court pedigree, having lifted his first ATP Tour title on the grass of the Libema Open (d. Thompson). Coupled with two previous runner-up finishes at the Turkish Airlines Antalya Open, and Cilic may have his work cut out. Mannarino beat Cilic 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-0 in their last clash at the 2017 Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships.

[27] Lucas Pouille vs. Richard Gasquet — FedEx ATP Head2Head 4-1
Pouille comes into an all-French battle with a 4-1 lead over Gasquet, but the No. 27 seed has been searching for form ever since he advanced to his first Grand Slam championship semi-final at the Australian Open (l. to Federer) in January. Gasquet, who has been limited to 12 matches this year as a result of groin surgery in mid-January, comes into Wimbledon on the back of reaching the ‘s-Hertogenbosch semi-finals (l. to Thompson). The 2007 and 2015 semi-finalist has a 28-13 record at The Championships, but aims to beat Pouille for the first time since the 2015 Open Sud de France.

Nick Kyrgios vs. Jordan Thompson — First FedEx ATP Head2Head Meeting
Unseeded at The Championships for the first time since beating Rafael Nadal en route to the quarter-finals five years ago, World No. 43 Kyrgios comes to the All England Club with an 11-9 record on the year. He will challenge fellow Australian and in-form Thompson, the World No. 45, who has won six of his past seven matches on grass courts and has compiled a 21-12 record in 2019. The victor will potentially face third seed Nadal in the second round. Kyrgios beat Nadal, Stan Wawrinka, John Isner and Alexander Zverev en route to the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC crown in early March.

Thiem Notches 250th Match Win In Hamburg

Dominic Thiem recorded the 250th match win of his career on Tuesday at the Hamburg European Open by beating 2016 runner-up Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay 6-3, 7-6(3) in one hour and 41 minutes. The top-seeded Austrian, who came within one point of taking a 4-0 lead in the first set, has now beaten Cuevas on three occasions this year — including at the Argentina Open and at Roland Garros. He next faces Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics in the second round.

Thiem is now 24-10 on the season, having bounced back from a Wimbledon first round exit (l. to Querrey). The 25-year-old lifted his first ATP Masters 1000 trophy at the BNP Paribas Open (d. Federer) in March and at the 500-level Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell (d. Medvedev) in April. Dominic Thiem made it through to the Hamburg European Open quarter-finals for the second straight year on Wednesday, beating Marton Fucsovics 7-5, 6-1.

On a hot Wednesday afternoon, the top seed fired 20 winners and dropped just two points behind his first serve (26/28) to claim victory in one hour and 36 minutes. Thiem claimed eight of nine games from 5-5 in the first set to triumph in the pair’s first FedEx ATP Head2Head encounter.

Thiem improves to 25-10 this season after reaching the last eight in Hamburg. The World No. 4 has lifted two ATP Tour trophies in 2019, capturing his maiden ATP Masters 1000 crown at the BNP Paribas Open (d. Federer) and the ATP 500 title at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell (d. Medvedev).

Thiem quickly found his range on return in front of the Center Court crowd, earning break points in four of Fucsovics’ opening five service games. But the Hungarian remained calm under pressure to reach 5-5.

But, from that point, Thiem reduced his error count and motored to victory. With relentless aggression and depth, the World No. 4 dictated rallies with his forehand and extracted regular errors from his opponent to book a quarter-final clash against Andrey Rublev.

World No. 4 Dominic Thiem is the lone Top 25 player competing at the Generali Open in Kitzbühel this week. But the 13-time ATP Tour titlist, who is seeking home glory at tour-level for the first time, knows that his ATP Ranking means little if he does not execute on the Austrian clay.

“I will try everything to win the title, of course. I also know if I play my 100 per cent that my chances are pretty high,” Thiem said. “But at the same time, every single player in the main draw is that good that if I drop some per cent, they will all beat me. So it depends if I can play my top tennis and I will do everything to do so.”

There’s even more pressure on Thiem this week since he is playing in front of his home fans for the first time this season. The top seed has lost his opening match in Kitzbühel in each of his past two appearances (2016 & 2018), but he hopes to turn that around this year as he pursues his maiden title at the ATP 250 tournament.

“[It’s] very special. It doesn’t happen that often [that I play at home]. Only two home events unfortunately all year, but that makes it very special,” said Thiem, who made the 2014 Kitzbühel final. “I have so many nice memories from here, also some tough memories from which I learned, hopefully. It’s already my ninth time playing here. Such a long time ago I played here the first time… I can’t wait to start again.”

“It’s very important. I’m playing an Austrian for sure in the second round, which is very good for Austrian tennis,” Thiem said. “I think for all the region here and for Austrian tennis, the tournament is super-important.”

Thiem Moves Closer To First Home Title In Kitzbühel

Dominic Thiem has accomplished a lot in 2019: winning his first ATP Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells, reaching his second Grand Slam final at Roland Garros, triumphing in Barcelona for the first time and plenty more. And on Thursday, the World No. 4 moved to within two wins of capturing his maiden ATP Tour trophy at home in Austria.
Thiem defeated Spaniard Pablo Andujar 7-6(4), 6-4 in one hour and 44 minutes to reach the semi-finals of the Generali Open in Kitzbühel. It is the third time the home favourite has made it this far at the ATP 250 tournament in his eighth appearance since it became a tour-level event in 2011.
The key was success on second serves, as Thiem won 61 per cent of his second-serve points, while Andujar only earned 35 per cent of his. The Austrian broke four times in the match, twice in each set.
The top seed now leads Andujar 3-0 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series, and he will next face seventh seed Lorenzo Sonego.
